    Podcast Summary

    • Focus on emerging social media platforms before they get expensiveSmall businesses can stay competitive by adopting new social media platforms early and being patient until they become valuable for advertising

Social media marketing will become more expensive for small businesses as larger companies compete for ad spots. However, the opportunity lies in being an early adopter of new platforms before they become saturated and expensive. Gary Vaynerchuk gives the example of email marketing and Google AdWords, which became more expensive as more businesses jumped on board. Instead, he suggests focusing on emerging platforms like Instagram, Snapchat, and Meerkat, and holding out until they become more valuable for advertising. This strategy requires patience and a long-term perspective, but it can help small businesses stay competitive and ride the wave of new trends before they become too expensive.

    • Seizing opportunities in new platformsEntrepreneurship involves dedication, time, confidence, and embracing challenges to seize opportunities in new platforms before they become saturated with competition.

Being an entrepreneur means seizing opportunities in new platforms before they become mainstream and saturated with competition. This requires dedication, time, and a willingness to work outside of traditional business hours. Confidence is crucial in the face of rejection, but it's important to ensure that what you're selling is legitimate and valuable. Surrounding yourself with negativity and turning it into positivity can also help build resilience. Ultimately, being an entrepreneur involves embracing challenges, pushing against the establishment, and staying true to your vision.

    • Focus on hiring individuals who understand the target audience, not their ageHire millennials based on their marketing skills and understanding of the target demographic, not their age.

While Gary Vaynerchuk finds excitement in challenging the status quo and proving people wrong, for those looking to build a millennial-owned branding agency, it's essential to focus on hiring individuals who truly understand the target audience, regardless of their age. Gary emphasizes that age does not necessarily equate to expertise in marketing to a specific demographic. Instead, look for individuals who have a deep understanding of the behavior and preferences of the age group you're trying to reach. As Gary puts it, "the reason I've mentioned that 50 year old fat white dude is he understood 12 year old girls in pop music better than anyone. Just like this 39 year old old dude understands the behavior of 13 to 23 year olds better than most people." So, when hiring millennials for your agency, prioritize their marketing skills and knowledge over their age.

    • Trusting your instincts and providing value are keys to successTrust your gut, create value, and engage with your audience for a genuine following, not buying fans through unscrupulous means

Trusting your intuition and providing value to your audience are key to success in social media and in life. Gary Vaynerchuk shared his observation that he learned to trust his instincts from a young age, even when it seemed counterintuitive to others. He emphasized the importance of having confidence in your decisions, but also maintaining humility and being open to feedback. Regarding social media, Clayton asked about retaining and increasing followers after taking over a company's account with bought fans. Gary advised that the approach should be the same regardless of the starting point – provide value to engaged fans to build a loyal following. He emphasized that buying fans through unscrupulous means is ultimately futile and will not lead to long-term success. Instead, focus on creating high-quality content and engaging with your audience to build a genuine following.

    • Perception of quality is subjective in creative expressionSuccess in creative expression depends on both the quality of the content and effective marketing efforts

The perception of quality is subjective and varies from person to person when it comes to music, art, content, or any form of creative expression. During a discussion, three individuals shared their diverse music preferences, and while some might find Kanye, Jay Z, or The Beach Boys as good, others might enjoy Flex Pavilion, Matty Young, and Light Side. The bottom line is that everyone has unique tastes, and what resonates with one person might not with another. However, the quality of the content is not the only determining factor for success. The ability to effectively market and distribute the content is equally important. Even with a large following, if the content is not good, it may not sustain long-term engagement or growth. Ultimately, it's a combination of both the quality of the content and the marketing efforts that can lead to success.

    • Exploring Favorite Music Acts: Connection, Expression, and Live PerformancesMusic is a powerful form of expression that connects us emotionally, inspires creativity, and provides unique experiences through our favorite artists and live performances.

Music is a deeply personal experience, and people have strong connections to the artists and bands that resonate with them. During our discussion, we explored the topic of favorite music acts of all time. Here are three key points that emerged: 1. Music is a powerful form of expression: Each of us shared stories about how specific artists or bands had touched us emotionally, inspired us creatively, or helped us through challenging times. Music has the ability to evoke strong feelings and memories, making it an essential part of our lives. 2. Diversity in musical tastes: Our favorite music acts spanned various genres, from classic rock and pop to electronic and hip-hop. This illustrates the vast array of musical styles and artists that exist, and how each person's musical preferences are unique. 3. The importance of live performances: Many of us emphasized the significance of seeing our favorite acts live in concert. The energy and connection between the artist and the audience can be an unforgettable experience, often deepening our appreciation for the music and the artist. In summary, music is a deeply personal and powerful form of expression that connects us emotionally, creatively, and socially. Our favorite music acts reflect our individual tastes and experiences, and the live performances can be a transformative experience.

The Most Important Question In Business

The Most Important Question In Business

Here’s the problem most people run into when they create content online: They think they have to have something to say. So many of you aren’t putting out content online because you think you need to have the perfect message, or something “valuable” to share (based on your own arbitrary opinion). And what I’m telling you is, you will get more business if you put out literally anything. If you’re an auto dealer, you could put out a 5 min video every afternoon just recapping what happened in your day. If you’re a real estate agent, you could post updates on what your opinions are about the Super Bowl teams. Get on social media and tell your truth … it’s really that simple.

    Ep 29 Being a Mompreneur

    Ep 29 Being a Mompreneur

Welcome to episode twenty-nine of the Honest Mamas Podcast! Today, we speak to Angela Jia Kim. Angela Jia Kim’s passion for beauty began with her mom. “Koreans are obsessed with their skin, and my mom always had something new sent over from her sisters in Seoul,” she says.

“I would play with her creams that were filled with ingredients like gold and silkworm cocoons.” Angela spent her early career as an award-winning concert pianist, until one day, onstage in front of hundreds of people, a so-called natural lotion she had applied made her break out in hives. Horrified, she began to study ingredients and craft her own skin care products in her kitchen. “I added luxury ingredients with tremendous skin benefits like champagne, caviar, and truffles,” she says.

“I infused them with organic extracts for anti-aging results.” She started gifting these products to friends, and they wanted to buy them as gifts for their friends. She became the “accidental entrepreneur.”

"I wanted to incorporate the Korean beauty rituals that I grew up with. But as a busy mom and wife living the gorgeous chaos of New York City, I needed flawless skin in a New York minute. And it must be organic and it must work."

Now Angela runs a group of holistic facial spas in New York City's West Village and Upper West Side, and in upstate New York. She continues to develop luxe organic products in the Beauty Kitchen with her team of Savor Spa Estheticians. Her Dollars & Scents initiative hires moms who need flexible work hours for their children. They make and ship the beauty creams fresh from the Hudson Valley in New York.

Angela Jia Kim is a former concert pianist, wife to a Swiss man who loves to brew craft beer in his spare time, and mom to a second grader CEO and a yellow lab named Ella Fitzgerald. They live in New York City's Upper West Side.

What you’ll hear in this episode

    • Why the spiritual element of the Savor community was helpful for Angela
    • The mindset and philosophy of give/give/get
