    • Finding Affordable Solutions and Dedicated TeachersAmidst inflation and challenges, affordable wireless options exist and dedicated teachers are needed in underfunded schools, inspiring optimism and making a difference.

Despite inflation and challenges in various sectors, there are opportunities for affordable solutions, as demonstrated by Mint Mobile's offer of premium wireless starting at $15 a month. Meanwhile, in education, there's a constant need for dedicated teachers, especially in underfunded districts like Jackson Public Schools in Mississippi, where the turnover rate is high and competition for talent is fierce. Despite the challenges, optimistic educators like Tommy Knowles continue to recruit new teachers, emphasizing the unique benefits of their communities and competitive salaries. Ultimately, it's a reminder that there's value in tenacity and making a difference in underserved areas.

    • Grow Your Own Programs: Developing Teachers from WithinSchool districts in poorer areas with teacher shortages are turning to 'grow your own' programs to train existing staff as teachers, addressing the shortage and promoting success stories

School districts, like Jackson in Mississippi, are facing significant challenges in filling teaching vacancies, particularly in poorer districts with large populations of black and Latino students. Instead of relying solely on job fairs and external recruitment, these districts are turning to "grow your own" programs, which aim to develop and train existing staff members to become teachers. This approach not only helps address the teacher shortage but also allows the district to promote its success story of transforming non-teachers into effective educators, even without extensive resources or attention. This approach is gaining popularity in states like Illinois, Texas, and Tennessee, and could serve as a potential solution for schools across the country dealing with similar challenges.

    • Bridging the gap for dedicated educatorsUnconventional residency programs help address teacher shortages by allowing educators to earn advanced degrees and certifications while continuing to work in understaffed and underfunded districts, making a significant impact in students' lives.

Unconventional programs like the Mississippi teacher residency are bridging the gap for dedicated educators, like Kimberly Pate, to earn advanced degrees and certifications while continuing to work in understaffed and underfunded districts. This mutually beneficial arrangement not only helps address the teacher shortage but also allows educators to make a significant impact in the lives of their students. The residency program has already produced 18 new fully certified teachers for Jackson Schools, with many more on the way. These educators, like Jennifer Carter, are now able to serve in multiple roles, such as special education teachers and bus drivers, making them valuable assets to their communities. This innovative approach to teacher education and retention is a step in the right direction for addressing the challenges faced by districts like Jackson, Mississippi.

    • Expanding the pool of potential teachers through local, underrepresented individualsGrow Your Own teacher training programs invest in local, underrepresented individuals, providing opportunities to become teachers and positively impact their communities, while diversifying the teacher force.

The "Grow Your Own" teacher training programs are designed to expand the pool of potential teachers by recruiting and investing in local, underrepresented individuals like Jonah Thomas. Thomas, a 22-year-old economics graduate, never considered teaching until he witnessed his mother's impact on her students. He's now nearly finished with his master's degree, and the fast-past training program has allowed him to apply new knowledge directly to his classroom. The program also prioritizes personal investment in the community, as demonstrated by 61-year-old pastor Duane Williams, who attended Jackson Public Schools as a child and now teaches 2nd graders. These programs save lives by providing opportunities for individuals like Thomas and Williams to become teachers and positively impact their own communities. The programs' focus on diversifying the teacher force also ensures that students can see themselves reflected in their teachers, leading to significant benefits.

    • Teachers making a difference with passion and dedicationPassionate teachers mentor, support, and don't abandon students, helping them overcome challenges and succeed.

Passion and dedication can lead to making a significant impact in the lives of students, especially those facing challenges. Williams, a full-time teacher unexpectedly, shares his passion for teaching and understanding the struggles of families living in poverty. He not only teaches but also mentors students. Jennifer Carter, a special educator, supports students who act out due to academic difficulties and feels embarrassed. Kimberly Pate, a teacher, credits the Mississippi teacher residency for her success. Gwendolyn Pate's first-grade students struggle with reading but know they have a dedicated teacher who won't abandon them. The common thread among these educators is their commitment to their students, which can help students overcome challenges and succeed.

Biden tries to reassure voters after a shaky debate performance

Biden tries to reassure voters after a shaky debate performance
The day after a debate in which he faltered many times, President Joe Biden hit the campaign trail to try and reassure supporters that he is still up for the job and capable of beating former President Donald Trump in November.

His performance in the CNN debate on Thursday led many Democrats to panic about his chances of winning reelection. Some commentators who have long supported Biden even called for him to step aside.

NPR's Scott Detrow speaks with NPR Senior White House Correspondent Tamara Keith and Congressional Correspondent Deirdre Walsh about what happens next and whether Biden can quell Democrats' fears.

Gun violence is getting worse. Is this the solution?

Gun violence is getting worse. Is this the solution?
The surgeon general's office has declared gun violence a national public health crisis.

It's the first time the body has ever issued a public health advisory about firearms, and for Surgeon General Vivek Murthy, it's a step in reframing the conversation about death by gunfire.

According to the CDC, more than 48,000 Americans were killed by gun violence in 2021, and over half of those deaths were by suicide.

Biden's executive actions on immigration send mixed signals

Biden's executive actions on immigration send mixed signals
In early June, President Joe Biden severely restricted asylum requests from migrants attempting to cross the U.S.-Mexico border without authorization.

Two weeks later, the President struck a more welcoming tone, saying he'd protect hundreds of thousands of undocumented immigrants married to U.S. citizens.

Immigration has become a big issue, for both parties. Policy experts say Biden hopes that in a close election year, these executive actions will sway voters to his side.

But will that strategy pay off and how will it affect migrants?

NPR's Adrian Florido speaks with immigration correspondent Jasmine Garsd who is reporting from the San Diego border with Mexico.

The U.S. election results will reverberate around the world

The U.S. election results will reverberate around the world
Polls – and NPR's own reporting – tell a story of many Americans fatigued by the upcoming presidential race. They're not satisfied with the choice between two men who have both already held the office of President.

But American allies and partners are watching the race intently, including South Korea, Japan, Ukraine and Israel. The fates of those countries are closely tied to whether Donald Trump or Joe Biden ends up sitting in the White House next year.

The NPR correspondents who cover those countries, Anthony Kuhn in South Korea, Joanna Kakissis in Ukraine, and Daniel Estrin in Israel, discuss the stakes each of those countries have in the outcome of America's presidential election.

Federal student aid still up in the air for many

Federal student aid still up in the air for many
This year's college application process was supposed to get easier.

That's because last year, the U.S. Department of Education announced changes to the Free Application for Federal Student Aid, or FAFSA.

The problems with the FAFSA form began last fall.

And with August and September around the corner, some applicants continue to experience technical issues.

Before this year, students would already know how much aid they're getting. But in 2024, not knowing, which is the case for many, could mean they can't go to college.
