Coleman Hughes and What it Will Take to Actually Address Racism (Replay)

    enApril 29, 2024

    Podcast Summary

    • Solo artists find opportunities in pandemic, collaborative arts face challengesSolo artists like Coleman Hughes can continue creating music independently during the pandemic, but collaborative arts like filmmaking face significant limitations working remotely. Education also adapts but lacks in-person interaction can hinder learning.

The current pandemic has led to unique challenges for various creative fields, but for solo artists like Coleman Hughes, who produces, mixes, raps, and performs music by himself, it has presented an opportunity to continue creating without the need for external collaboration or performance in front of a crowd. However, for more collaborative arts like filmmaking, the limitations of working remotely have significantly impacted the scope and quality of projects. While some aspects of education and learning have adapted to remote environments, the lack of in-person interaction can make it more challenging for students to fully engage and benefit from their classes. The historical context of the 1918 pandemic reveals that social isolation and cancellation of large events were part of the response, but the overall impact on the pandemic's progression is still debated.

    • The human resistance to authority fuels social movementsThe pandemic and social movements, such as protests against police brutality and mask mandates, are driven by various factors including childhood experiences, desire for autonomy, restlessness, human contact, issue substance, and Trump's rhetoric. Obama's ability to resonate with anger and maintain moderation makes him an ideal leader during this crisis.

The human propensity to resist authority has played a significant role in various social movements, including the ongoing protests against police brutality and mask mandates during the COVID-19 pandemic. This resistance can stem from childhood experiences or a deep-seated desire for autonomy. However, the pandemic is an external force that doesn't care about individual attitudes towards authority. The protests are driven by various factors, including restlessness, the desire for human contact, and the substance of the issue itself. The Trump effect may also be a contributing factor, as his rhetoric can escalate tensions. Obama is seen as a potential ideal leader during this crisis due to his ability to resonate with anger about racial justice issues while maintaining moderation.

    • Effective communication and leadership during crisesDuring uncertain times, acknowledge the situation, seek informed voices, have a clear goal, and take binary actions to navigate through challenges.

Effective communication and leadership are crucial during times of crisis. The speaker shares their personal experiences of being deeply influenced by the rhetoric and oratorical skills of presidents, particularly Obama, who they felt made them feel good about being an American. They emphasize the importance of having a clear goal and understanding the problem to achieve progress. During times of uncertainty, such as the current social and political climate, it's essential to acknowledge the situation and seek out informed voices that align with your goals. The speaker's personal journey involved questioning the unified black voice in response to the crisis and focusing on the foundational principles of progress. Ultimately, having a clear goal, informed hypothesis, and binary actions can help navigate through challenging times.

    • Recognizing diversity of opinions within black community and importance of knowledge and policy understandingAvoid unnecessary divisions and roadblocks in a multicultural society by focusing on common goal of reducing racism and promoting equality, regardless of skin color.

Having a clear, specific goal is essential for making progress, but achieving the goal of a colorblind society where race holds no significant impact on interactions between people is a controversial and complex issue. The speaker advocates for recognizing the diversity of opinions within the black community and the importance of knowledge and policy understanding, rather than relying solely on lived experience. They caution against the modern antiracist movement's emphasis on the importance of race, which they believe could create unnecessary divisions and roadblocks in a multicultural society. Instead, they encourage focusing on the common goal of reducing racism and promoting equality, regardless of skin color.

    • Questioning the narrative of victimhood and systemic racismThe speaker challenges the focus on group identities and victimhood, finding it disempowering and not representative of individual experiences. He values difficult conversations and questions assumptions of the social justice narrative.

The speaker, a podcast host, became interested in challenging the narrative of systemic racism and victimhood due to his personal experiences and encounters with doubt in the social justice worldview. He felt that focusing on group identities and victimhood was disempowering and not representative of the individual experiences of people. He was drawn to having difficult conversations, even if they were controversial, as he admired those who were willing to challenge popular beliefs. He found himself questioning the assumptions of the social justice narrative and the idea of being a victim, leading him to lean into the topic and become a voice in the conversation.

    • Speaker's Personal Connection to IssuesDespite criticism and backlash, the speaker remains committed to addressing issues that resonate with him personally, particularly those that disproportionately affect marginalized communities, and believes that identity is malleable.

The speaker, driven by a deep sense of compassion and a belief in the malleability of identity, has dedicated himself to addressing issues that resonate with him on a personal level. Despite facing criticism and backlash, he feels compelled to speak out and find solutions, particularly when it comes to issues that disproportionately affect marginalized communities. The speaker's core belief is that identity is malleable, and he has chosen to focus on solving problems that matter most to him, from ending metabolic disease to speaking out on social issues. He refuses to let fear or the threat of backlash deter him from serving the people he loves and cares about.

    • People from privileged backgrounds claiming to be victims of racismColeman Hughes believes the trend of privileged individuals claiming to be victims of racism is dangerous and fueled by a spiritual void, ignoring facts and lacking internal limiting principles.

The speaker, Coleman Hughes, feels deeply concerned about the societal phenomenon where people from privileged backgrounds claim to be victims of racism, despite having no personal experience of poverty or lack of privilege. He believes this desire to be a victim stems from a spiritual void in people's souls and is fueled by the power and cultural acceptance of this narrative. Hughes feels that this trend is dangerous because it has no internal limiting principle and disregards facts. He believes that this situation is akin to the "emperor has no clothes" scenario, where everyone is pretending that there is something there when there isn't. Hughes has dedicated his life to addressing this issue and bringing awareness to the fact that the emperor, in this case, has no clothes.

    • Employees asked for small wishes despite opportunity for moreLimited perspectives require encouragement to aim higher, personal responsibility is key to life changes.

During his experience at Quest, a rapidly growing company, the speaker discovered that most employees, despite being given the opportunity to wish for anything, asked for a relatively small amount of money. He realized that their perspective was limited, and they needed to be encouraged to aim higher. The speaker also learned the importance of accepting responsibility for one's own life and choices. Despite his belief that this message would be met with enthusiasm, he was met with resistance. However, he continued to believe in the power of personal responsibility and eventually wrote about it in his first blog article. The experience taught him that even if people don't initially accept a difficult truth, it can still have a profound impact on their lives if they eventually come to understand it.

    • Embrace personal responsibility, utilize tools, and protect data for growthChoosing personal responsibility, using effective tools like Yahoo Finance and Shopify, and safeguarding data with services like DeleteMe can lead to significant progress in life.

Having a mindset of personal responsibility and control, even if it's not entirely true, can be empowering and propel you forward in life. This false dichotomy between controlling everything or nothing is a choice, and choosing personal responsibility can help you reach your financial goals, grow your business, and take control of your personal data. Growing up with limited exposure to possibilities can hinder imagination and ambition, making it crucial to surround yourself with role models and diverse experiences. Furthermore, utilizing the best technology and platforms, such as Yahoo Finance and Shopify, can provide valuable insights, tools, and advantages in today's competitive world. For instance, Yahoo Finance offers comprehensive financial news and analysis, while Shopify acts as a global commerce platform for businesses at every stage. Lastly, protecting your personal data is essential in today's digital age. Services like DeleteMe can help eliminate your information from data brokers and people search sites, ensuring your privacy. In summary, embracing personal responsibility, utilizing the right tools, and safeguarding your personal data can lead to significant growth and progress in various aspects of life.

    • Challenging the assumption of political power for economic advancementFocusing on entrepreneurship and business leads to greater success than relying on political power and policies.

Pursuing economic well-being through political power and policy may not be the most effective way for groups to advance. Instead, focusing on entrepreneurship and business can lead to greater success. This idea, which is supported by thinkers like Thomas Sowell, challenges the common assumption that groups progress by obtaining political power and securing favorable policies. Historically, groups that have dominated politics have often lagged behind economically, while those creating wealth have had little political power. It's essential to question deeply held beliefs and focus on what actually works. In business, this means adopting a "no bullshit" approach and focusing on actions rather than stories or beliefs. Ultimately, life cares only about behavior, and changing behavior is the key to improving one's life.

    • Belief in self-improvement and unityBelieving in our ability to grow and unite can lead to resilience and positive change, while misusing righteous indignation can fuel division.

The belief we hold about our own abilities and potential for growth significantly impacts our actions and the trajectory of our lives. If we believe that we can improve ourselves, we will be motivated to try and grow, even in the face of adversity. On the other hand, if we believe our talents and intelligence are fixed, we may give up on self-improvement. Mandela's inspiring story of resilience and unity in the face of oppression is a powerful reminder that no matter the circumstances, there is always a third way forward. Additionally, righteous indignation, while a potent emotion, should be used wisely to drive positive change rather than fueling division.

    • Questioning the intentions behind feelings for progress or regressionFeelings should not dictate trust or action. It's crucial to evaluate intentions and align actions with desired outcomes, rather than valuing the outcome over the sincere attempt, which can distort narratives and disregard facts.

Feelings, no matter how powerful or compelling, should not be the sole basis for trust or action. The discussion highlights how feelings like moral outrage and righteous indignation can be present during both historical progress and regression. However, it's crucial to question the intentions behind these feelings and evaluate if the actions taken align with the desired outcome. The risk lies in valuing the outcome over the sincere attempt, leading to a distorted narrative that disregards facts. It's essential to define "wise" and establish metrics for evaluating progress towards goals. This approach allows us to objectively assess whether we're making progress and adjust our course if necessary. The Obama presidency serves as an example of this concept, where the initial excitement led to disappointment, but the lesson learned should have been a recalibration of expectations rather than a confirmation of systemic racism.

    • Belief in Pervasive Systemic RacismDespite a black president, systemic racism persists, requiring radical change but only if a solid replacement is ready to prevent chaos.

The speaker believes that the deeply ingrained issues of systemic racism in society are so pervasive that even a black president cannot overcome it. This belief leads some people to advocate for radical change, such as dismantling the police, but only if a better alternative is in place. The speaker warns against weakening the current system without a solid replacement, comparing it to sinking a leaking boat without a new one ready. The speaker also shares a personal experience of being falsely accused by the police, which left them feeling powerless and vulnerable. Overall, the speaker's perspective highlights the urgency for meaningful change while also emphasizing the importance of careful consideration and planning.

    • Addressing Police Brutality: Balancing Safety and JusticeReducing police presence could increase crime, especially violent crimes. Complex issue requires nuanced conversations about safety and justice. Homicide and murder, particularly for black men, is a significant problem. Societal reckoning needed on interconnected issues of race and poverty.

While addressing police brutality is crucial, it's essential to consider the potential second and third order consequences. Reducing police presence could lead to an increase in crime, particularly violent crimes like robbery and homicide. The speaker emphasizes that this is a complex issue, and there are ways to address it without sacrificing safety. They suggest having nuanced conversations about where the best trade-offs can be made. Additionally, the speaker raises the issue of homicide and murder, which is often overlooked but a significant problem, especially for black men in their twenties. They propose a compassionate, fact-based, and goal-oriented approach to addressing this issue. The speaker also notes that discussions about race often mask underlying issues of poverty. Ultimately, the speaker calls for a societal reckoning on these issues, recognizing that they are interconnected and require urgent attention.

    • Culture of honor linked to high homicide rate among black menThe complex relationship between poverty, honor culture, and violence needs further exploration to determine its impact on homicide rates among black men.

The high homicide rate among black men in their twenties could be linked to a culture of honor rooted in poverty and historical southern honor culture. However, the relationship between poverty, honor culture, and violence is complex and may not be the only factor. The data on this issue needs further exploration to determine if this holds true regardless of socioeconomic status, region, or race. Additionally, it's important to note that the causal relationship between poverty and violence can be reciprocal, creating a positive reinforcing loop that is challenging to unwind. Ultimately, understanding the root causes of violence requires a nuanced approach that considers the complex interplay of cultural, historical, and socioeconomic factors.

    • The relationship between poverty and violence, and the impact on police forcesVicious cycles exist between poverty, violence, and police forces, and addressing them is crucial to prevent further entrenchment

We are currently facing several vicious cycles that need to be interrupted. One of these cycles is the relationship between poverty and violence, where each can lead to the other in a never-ending loop. Another cycle is the quality of police forces, which is influenced by the cultural moment and the number of applicants. As the perception of policing becomes less attractive, the pool of applicants decreases, potentially leading to a lower quality of officers and more police brutality. This, in turn, fuels outrage and further discourages people from becoming cops. It's crucial to address these cycles before they become even more entrenched. Additionally, when it comes to writing on race and social issues, I aim to ask the right questions and provide answers where possible. However, the complexity of these issues often calls for more research and thought before prescribing specific actions.

    • Understanding the trade-offs in addressing societal issuesWhile striving for progress in societal issues, it's important to acknowledge the limitations and trade-offs in achieving complete eradication. Focus on understanding these complexities and the diminishing returns of overly draconian measures.

While it's important to strive for progress in addressing societal issues like crime and racism, it's essential to understand that complete eradication may not be achievable due to inherent trade-offs in society. Instead, we should focus on understanding these trade-offs and the diminishing returns of overly draconian measures. Racism, for instance, can be seen as a contagion that requires eradication or as individual acts with diminishing returns. The market also puts a cost on discrimination, making it less profitable for businesses to discriminate. However, the belief that capitalism is inherently racist is a misconception, and policies that curb the free market may not effectively address the root causes of societal issues. Ultimately, it's crucial to approach these issues with a clear-eyed understanding of reality and the limitations of solutions.

    • Capitalism and Racism: No Simple AnswerThe relationship between capitalism and racism is complex, with no inherent link between the two. While capitalists can be racist, the market may also impose costs on discrimination, as seen in historical cases and experimental evidence.

There is no inherent link between capitalism and racism. While capitalists can be racist, and government-run entities can also be racist, it is difficult to predict which direction the free market will lead someone. Some people argue that the market imposes a cost on racial discrimination, as seen in the example of Plessy vs. Ferguson, where a Jim Crow transit company funded the famous civil rights case because racial segregation hurt their bottom line. Additionally, experiments, such as comparing countries with different economic routes or studying the outcomes of violent versus peaceful revolutions, can provide valuable insights into the relationship between economic systems and racism. Ultimately, it is essential to look at the data and learn from the results of these experiments to gain a better understanding of this complex issue.

    • Clarity in Communication: Identifying Goals and AssumptionsEffective communication requires identifying clear goals and assumptions to avoid misunderstandings and disagreements. Recognizing and addressing underlying assumptions is essential for productive conversations and achieving common objectives.

Effective communication in business and in life requires clarity and understanding of goals and assumptions. The speaker shares his frustration with people who cannot articulate their goals in a succinct way. He emphasizes the importance of identifying base assumptions, which often lie beneath surface-level disagreements. The speaker draws an analogy from a personal experience with his wife about arguing over a cup of tea, which led them to realize they had different assumptions about each other's behavior. He also recommends the book "The Conflict of Visions" by Thomas Sowell, which explores how different assumptions about human nature lead to opposing views on various issues. Ultimately, recognizing and addressing underlying assumptions is crucial for productive conversations and achieving common goals.

    • Understanding and Connecting with Audiences Through Emotion and IntellectEmbrace your unique ability to connect with diverse audiences through emotion and intellect, but be aware of the challenges that come with it. Stay true to yourself and continue pursuing your passions.

Our approach to understanding and engaging with the world, whether it's through emotion or intellect, shapes the impact we have on human society. The speaker expresses admiration for the interviewee's unique ability to connect with both emotional and intellectual audiences, but acknowledges the challenges that come with it. The interviewee's rapid speech and use of hyperbole can be misconstrued, making it difficult for them to be taken seriously as an intellectual in certain circles. However, their talent as a rapper and their ability to speak to the limbic and logical parts of the brain make them uniquely positioned to reach a broader audience. The speaker encourages the interviewee to continue exploring both paths, despite the challenges, as everyone has a balance of logic and emotion in their brain, and both perspectives are important and valuable. Ultimately, it's important to stay true to oneself and pursue one's passions, even if it means facing challenges and potential misunderstandings.

    • Identifying as an artist and storytellerThe speaker finds joy in creating stories and expressing himself intuitively through rap music, prioritizing storytelling and art over other roles.

While some people may see themselves as influencers or CEOs, the speaker identifies as an artist and storyteller, striving to impact 2% of the public in a meaningful way. He finds joy in creating stories and expressing himself intuitively through rap music, with a focus on coolness and communication of emotions. The speaker's past experiences have shaped his perspective, leading him to prioritize storytelling and art over other roles. Jazz music and improvisation have not resonated with him due to a lack of understanding and ability, but he continues to appreciate and enjoy various forms of music.

    • Jazz as a Language: Dedication and ImmersionJazz requires dedication and immersion to understand, compared to learning a language, with unique grammar and proficiency development over time. Unique voices and perspectives enrich the music industry.

Jazz music is like a language, requiring dedication and immersion to fully understand and appreciate. The interviewee shared his personal journey of falling in love with jazz later in life, after being exposed to its complexities beyond mainstream versions. He compared learning jazz to learning a language, with its own unique grammar and the development of proficiency and mastery over time. The interview did not reveal specific details about the next album, but expressed excitement about the potential fusion of intellectual ideas and music. The conversation highlighted the value of unique voices and perspectives in the music industry. The interviewer expressed admiration for the interviewee's approach to data and intellectual pursuits, and emphasized the importance of building a community and delivering value to listeners. Overall, the conversation emphasized the importance of dedication, immersion, and unique perspectives in appreciating and creating jazz music.

Warning For America: Corrupt Government, Rich, Poor, Trump Verdict & 2024 Election | Michael Malice PT 1
Welcome to Impact Theory, I’m Tom Bilyeu and in today’s episode my guest Michael Malice and I dive deep into the realm of societal norms, politics, and cultural dynamics to help you break free from the "factory settings" of default societal beliefs. Michael Malice is widely known as an anarchist, author, and podcaster who challenges conventional views on political authority. Through his work, he pushes for a deeper understanding of the structures that govern us. Together, we debate the impact of governmental actions on society, delve into the psychological underpinnings of human behavior, and ponder the potential of anarchism as a viable societal framework. We also touch on:  - Transient cultural issues like transgender bathrooms and miniskirts  - Peoples’ resistance to thinking beyond societal norms - Effectiveness of inflicting personal consequences in political change - Mao, North Korea, and USSR historical context - Implications of an anarchist system - Voting as a ritual versus a practical tool for change - Inevitability of hierarchy - Anarchism and political legitimacy - Thinking from first principles - Intellectual curiosity in communication - Armed populations as a defense against government overreach - The status-seeking nature of humans and its manipulation - Media narratives and trust - Human behavior and political dynamics - Risk of global hegemony and practical limitations Whether you're a skeptic or an advocate of anarchism, prepare to have your beliefs examined and your assumptions questioned. This is just Part 1 of our conversation, so make sure you don’t miss Part 2 of this convo for even more insights from Michael Malice. Ep 29 Being a Mompreneur

Welcome to episode twenty-nine of the Honest Mamas Podcast! Today, we speak to Angela Jia Kim. Angela Jia Kim’s passion for beauty began with her mom. “Koreans are obsessed with their skin, and my mom always had something new sent over from her sisters in Seoul,” she says.

“I would play with her creams that were filled with ingredients like gold and silkworm cocoons.” Angela spent her early career as an award-winning concert pianist, until one day, onstage in front of hundreds of people, a so-called natural lotion she had applied made her break out in hives. Horrified, she began to study ingredients and craft her own skin care products in her kitchen. “I added luxury ingredients with tremendous skin benefits like champagne, caviar, and truffles,” she says.

“I infused them with organic extracts for anti-aging results.” She started gifting these products to friends, and they wanted to buy them as gifts for their friends. She became the “accidental entrepreneur.”

"I wanted to incorporate the Korean beauty rituals that I grew up with. But as a busy mom and wife living the gorgeous chaos of New York City, I needed flawless skin in a New York minute. And it must be organic and it must work."

Now Angela runs a group of holistic facial spas in New York City's West Village and Upper West Side, and in upstate New York. She continues to develop luxe organic products in the Beauty Kitchen with her team of Savor Spa Estheticians. Her Dollars & Scents initiative hires moms who need flexible work hours for their children. They make and ship the beauty creams fresh from the Hudson Valley in New York.

Angela Jia Kim is a former concert pianist, wife to a Swiss man who loves to brew craft beer in his spare time, and mom to a second grader CEO and a yellow lab named Ella Fitzgerald. They live in New York City's Upper West Side.

What you’ll hear in this episode

    • Why the spiritual element of the Savor community was helpful for Angela
