Setting big goals and taking incremental steps towards them, even in the face of challenges, can lead to powerful and rewarding outcomes. This was the experience of adventure athlete, Colin O'Brady, who, after suffering severe burns during his travels, made a commitment to himself to complete a triathlon. Not only did he achieve this, but he went on to become a professional triathlete and embark on an ambitious Explorers Grand Slam Challenge to climb the highest mountains on each of the 7 continents and trek to both the South and North Poles. Through it all, he's striving to raise awareness and funds to combat childhood obesity. Colin's journey demonstrates the importance of staying focused on the journey and living one's passion, even when faced with adversity. Additionally, Rich Roll, the podcast host, shared his commitment to exploring new mediums, such as video, to expand his advocacy work in 2016. He emphasized that this does not mean neglecting his podcast, but rather a desire to explore new ways to connect with his audience. Additionally, I'm excited to introduce Go Brewing, a new sponsor of the podcast, which offers delicious small-batch craft alcohol-free brews. Founded by a listener inspired by a podcast episode, Go Brewing's natural ingredients and commitment to traditional beer styles make for impressive and tasteful alternatives to traditional brews. Lastly, I had the privilege of speaking with Colin, who embarked on an incredible challenge called Beyond 72, which involves skiing to the South Pole and then climbing Mount Vincent without any rest days. By the time you listen to this, he will have accomplished the first goal, and I'll let him share his story instead.

    • Living in Kauai vs Visiting: A Deeper ConnectionLiving in Kauai offers opportunities for sustainable community building and even starting a business, like farming. The woofer lifestyle fosters a communal and educational environment.

Living in Kauai as opposed to just visiting provides a unique perspective and deeper connection to the community and the land. The North Shore of Kauai has its own social structure and island mentality, which can be challenging to penetrate for newcomers. However, for those who are committed to living there, there are opportunities to build a sustainable community and even start a business, like farming. My stepfather, for instance, has a successful farm called Olana Farm, where he grows a wide variety of produce and hosts woofers, people who help work on the farm and live there. The woofer lifestyle fosters a communal and educational environment, where people with formal backgrounds in organic farming can learn and contribute to the community. Despite the initial challenges, the rewards of living in Kauai and being a part of this community are significant, making it a paradise worth exploring beyond the tourist perspective.

    • Athlete's Quest to Break 7 Summits and Poles RecordProfessional triathlete aims to set world record by climbing highest mountains and reaching both poles within 5 months, documenting journey for legitimacy.

The speaker, a professional triathlete, is embarking on an ambitious project to set a world record by climbing the tallest mountain on each of the 7 continents and reaching both the North and South Poles within 5 months, significantly younger than the average person who has accomplished this feat. The record they're aiming for is 6 months and 11 days, and they've built in a buffer of 5 weeks. They plan to document their journey extensively to ensure its legitimacy, and have sought guidance from those who have previously achieved this feat. The first challenge in their journey will be traveling to Antarctica to begin the South Pole expedition. The project represents a significant pivot in the speaker's life after years of traveling the world as a professional triathlete.

    • The importance of a consistent support system and fresh motivationHaving a consistent person for daily communication and coordination, along with fresh faces for energy and motivation, is crucial for achieving significant goals, but uncontrollable factors like weather can add emotional challenges.

The journey to achieve a significant goal, such as climbing the seven summits and the polar peaks, involves overcoming numerous challenges and requires the support of various individuals at different stages. The climber in this discussion emphasizes the importance of having a consistent person for daily communication and coordination, while also having fresh faces to bring energy and motivation throughout the process. However, there are uncontrollable factors like weather that can pose significant risks and add to the emotional challenge. Despite these fears, the climber remains determined and focused on the mission, knowing that the support system and the dream of making this reality will keep them going.

    • Balancing safety and records in extreme environmentsExplorers must prioritize safety over records in extreme environments, as uncontrollable factors like extreme cold, heavy sleds, and navigation challenges require careful planning and informed decisions.

When embarking on a challenging journey, whether it's climbing mountains or attempting to reach the poles, there are uncontrollable factors that come into play. These factors may require difficult decisions and a balance between risk and safety. The explorer in the conversation discussed the importance of prioritizing safety over setting records, as well as the unique challenges of polar travel compared to mountain climbing. Polar travel involves long endurance days in extreme cold, pulling a heavy sled, and navigating through vast, desolate regions. Additionally, the North Pole is a constantly moving target due to drifting ice, making navigation more reliant on GPS. The South Pole, on the other hand, has a permanent landmark at the pole. Overall, the conversation emphasized the importance of preparation, making informed decisions, and prioritizing safety in the face of uncontrollable factors.

    • Impact of climate change on polar regions challenges explorers and scientistsClimate change melts Arctic Ocean, making it harder to reach North Pole, and technical peaks like Kangchenjunga Pyramid and Denali's West Buttress add to the challenge for explorers, requiring careful planning and consideration of environmental implications to succeed.

Global climate change significantly impacts the polar regions, specifically the North Pole, making it increasingly challenging for explorers and scientists to access. The Arctic Ocean is melting at an alarming rate, causing open leads and making it difficult to reach the North Pole during the season. This issue not only affects exploration but also raises concerns for the environment. From a mountaineering perspective, the most technically challenging peaks discussed were Kangchenjunga's Kangchenjunga Pyramid and Denali's West Buttress route. While Kangchenjunga Pyramid requires a Tarellian Traverse and technical rock climbing moves, Denali's West Buttress route is less traveled and more challenging due to its off-the-beaten-path nature. The explorer in this discussion plans to climb the North Pole, Everest, and Denali in under six months. However, the melting Arctic Ocean and the need to acclimatize at each location pose challenges, particularly with Everest, where he may arrive later than usual and have less time for acclimatization due to the earlier starting dates for the North Pole and Everest expeditions. In summary, climate change's impact on the polar regions and the technical demands of mountaineering make for a complex and challenging exploration project. The explorer must carefully plan his schedule and consider the environmental implications to successfully complete his ambitious goal.

    • Navigating the logistical challenges of climbing the seven summits in one expeditionEffective communication and documentation through satellite technology enable real-time audience engagement during a challenging mountaineering expedition

Mountaineering the seven summits in a single expedition comes with specific time constraints and logistical challenges. For instance, Kilimanjaro and Mount Elbrus can be moved around to fit the schedule, but mountains like Everest, the South Pole, and Denali have strict windows for climbing. The expedition team, led by the speaker, plans to travel directly from one summit to the next without returning to the US until the last peak. Communication and documentation are essential aspects of the project, and they will use satellite technology to share their journey in real-time. The team will carry a satellite modem and a small device called a DeLormen Reach to send texts and simple messages. Satellite coverage is more challenging at the poles, and they will need to send low-resolution images and small files. Despite the slower connection speed, this technology allows the team to engage the audience in real-time and share their story as it unfolds.

    • Swimming shaped the speaker's identity and led him to explore the worldThe speaker's background in swimming influenced his desire to connect with people and travel the world, leading him to prioritize experiences over a traditional career path.

The speaker's background in swimming and experiences at Yale University shaped his identity and eventually led him to embark on a journey of exploration and self-discovery after graduation. The speaker's desire to connect with people and have support during challenging times is a driving force behind his current project. Swimming played a significant role in his life, starting from his childhood with Portland Park Swim Team, continuing through college at Yale under the guidance of legendary coach Frank Keith, and eventually inspiring him to broaden his horizons and travel the world after graduation. Despite the pressure to join the financial industry, his curiosity and Portland roots led him to prioritize experiencing the world over starting a career.

    • Unconventional upbringing fuels world travel and adventurous experiencesAn unconventional upbringing can lead to unique experiences and opportunities, inspiring personal growth and potentially leading to unexpected relationships.

The speaker had an unconventional upbringing, shaped by hippie values and a love for the outdoors. This upbringing led him to travel the world, live in hostels, and pursue adventurous experiences, including a semester off to sea kayak and mountaineer in Patagonia. Despite attending an Ivy League school, his experiences and values were more aligned with the counterculture movement. The speaker also mentioned an inspiring story about a former Yale swimmer who became a truck driver and is now inspiring others in that field. The speaker's own travels eventually led him to meet his fiancée in Fiji, but his adventures were cut short when he was severely burned in a fire during a fire dancing incident in Thailand.

    • The Power of Friendship During a Severe Burn InjuryFriendship can provide crucial support during a severe burn injury, helping the injured person cope with the pain and uncertainty of the recovery process.

Severe burns can be a life-threatening injury, and having a supportive friend during such a critical time can make all the difference. The speaker, who experienced severe burns on both legs in a fire accident while traveling in Thailand, shares how his friend David was there for him in his moment of need. Despite being in immense pain and facing the possibility of a life-threatening infection, the speaker was grateful for David's presence and support. The experience brought them closer, and David became a source of strength and reassurance during their long recovery process. The speaker emphasizes that severe burns are a unique injury, and without prior experience or context, it can be challenging to understand the treatment process and what to expect. The speaker's story highlights the importance of having a strong support system during challenging times.

    • Language barrier causes confusion during emergencyEffective communication is vital during emergencies, and a language barrier can lead to delays and misunderstandings. Having a means of communication, like a cell phone, can be crucial.

Communication is crucial during emergencies. In this account, the lack of clear communication due to a language barrier led to confusion and delays in getting the necessary help. The patient, David, was traveling without a cell phone in 2008, which further complicated matters. His mother's quick action and eventual arrival provided much-needed support. Despite the challenges, the patient underwent extensive treatment in Thailand and eventually made a recovery, albeit with a long hospital stay and the possibility of limited mobility. The experience served as a turning point in his life, leading him down an unexpected path.

    • Overcoming challenges through incremental goalsFocusing on smaller goals can help overcome seemingly unattainable challenges, leading to remarkable outcomes despite initial setbacks and lengthy healing processes.

Setting and achieving incremental goals, even after facing significant challenges, can lead to remarkable outcomes. This was exemplified in the speaker's journey towards completing a triathlon after a severe burn injury. Initially, the goal seemed unattainable, but by focusing on smaller steps, such as moving from a wheelchair to a nearby chair, the speaker was able to make progress and eventually train for and compete in a triathlon. Despite the painful and lengthy healing process, which included severe second-degree burns and the absence of grafts, the speaker's determination and resilience led to a successful recovery and the achievement of his goal.

    • From injury to victory: A story of determinationDespite challenges, determination and resilience can lead to remarkable achievements. Set ambitious goals and work hard to overcome obstacles.

Determination and resilience can lead to remarkable achievements, even in the face of significant challenges. The speaker's mother, who had suffered severe burns, surprised everyone by competing and winning the Chicago Triathlon despite her injuries. The speaker, inspired by this and driven to set a personal goal, trained hard and won the race in the amateur division, despite not knowing his exact standing against other competitors. His background in soccer, which required a certain level of athleticism, likely contributed to his success in the running portion of the triathlon. The speaker's journey from injury to victory illustrates the power of perseverance and the importance of setting and working towards ambitious goals.

    • Unexpected wins can lead to life-changing opportunitiesWinning a race unexpectedly led the speaker to gain a sponsor and pursue a career in professional athletics

Unexpected opportunities can lead to remarkable outcomes. The speaker, a successful triathlete and media entrepreneur, shared how winning a race led him to gain a sponsor and pursue a career in professional athletics. Growing up in a track-rich environment in Oregon, he had a natural athleticism and was inspired by local athletes like Galen Rupp. However, he had never competed in running before the race. After winning, a friend and world-renowned trader, Brian Gelber, offered to sponsor him, providing the financial backing to pursue his dream. Despite not having decided on a career in athletics yet, the speaker was grateful for this opportunity and has never regretted his decision. This story illustrates how unexpected events and the support of others can open doors to new possibilities and shape our lives in meaningful ways.

    • The Impact of Mentors and SupportersMentors and supporters significantly influence personal and professional growth through guidance, support, and encouragement.

Mentorship and support from individuals like Brian Gelber can significantly impact one's personal and professional growth. Gelber, a successful trader turned mentor, has been a key figure in the speaker's life, providing guidance and support throughout their career, even during challenging times. The relationship between high performance in various aspects of life, including business, sports, and parenting, shares similar lessons. Despite never being a professional athlete himself, Gelber's business background and coaching philosophy have been invaluable to the speaker's journey in triathlon. The speaker's life took an unexpected turn when they met Simon Thompson, an Australian Olympian, and decided to move to Australia to train with his squad. This decision led to the speaker quitting their job and embarking on a professional triathlon career, ultimately leading them to compete in 25 countries and 6 continents. The importance of mentors and supporters cannot be overstated, as they provide invaluable guidance, support, and encouragement during one's personal and professional journey.

    • ITU racing places greater emphasis on swimming abilityIn ITU racing, a poor swim performance can significantly impact your position, requiring athletes to react to competitors and excel in all three disciplines to succeed

Draft legal triathlon, where athletes draft during the cycling portion, places a greater emphasis on swimming ability compared to other triathlon disciplines. A poor swim performance can result in missing the lead group and being left behind, making it a more unforgiving and tactical race. Unlike traditional triathlon where the focus is on executing a personal race plan, ITU racing requires reacting to the actions of competitors and maintaining a high level of performance in all three disciplines to succeed. The intense nature of ITU racing continues to evolve, requiring athletes to be exceptional in all areas to compete at the top level.

    • Experience and challenges of the ITU triathlon circuitThe ITU triathlon circuit offers a global racing experience with intense competition and a diverse community, but the logistics of making a living as a pro can be tough, especially for those not at the elite level, with limited funding and resources in the US.

The ITU triathlon circuit offers a unique and intense racing experience with high levels of parity, requiring athletes to travel extensively and compete against a diverse group of athletes from around the world. The lifestyle offers a remarkable international community, but the logistics of making a living as a professional triathlete, particularly for those not at the elite level, can be challenging due to limited funding and resources, with the US having less support compared to countries like Australia and Western Europe. Despite these challenges, the ITU circuit provides a rich cultural experience and a tightly-knit community among athletes and coaches.

    • From swimming to triathlon: Different paths to a professional careerTransitioning from swimming to triathlon is common, with scholarship routes and government funding shaping paths in different countries. Prize money and sponsorships are crucial for financing a career, and mental and physical demands require dedication.

The path to becoming a professional triathlete varies greatly depending on the country and individual circumstances. In the US, many athletes follow a scholarship route in swimming or running before transitioning to triathlon, while in countries like Australia, athletes may receive government funding from a younger age. Prize money and sponsorships play a crucial role in financing a career, and having a strong background in swimming can provide valuable training experience for the triathlon disciplines. The speaker, who came from a swimming background, emphasized the importance of logging hours and understanding the mental and physical demands of training. Despite the financial challenges, the speaker found fulfillment in the journey and passion for the sport. The trend of more triathletes coming from swimming backgrounds is raising the bar in the sport, and there is an increasing effort to develop a pipeline for young athletes in the US.

    • Training with ChampionsImmerse in a supportive environment with champions to learn valuable lessons and fuel passion for the sport.

Being part of Siri Lindley's training squad in Santa Monica, California, was a transformative experience for the speaker. Surrounded by world-class athletes like Miranda Carfrae, Leanna Kaye, and Luke McKenzie, the speaker learned invaluable lessons from these champions. Siri's coaching style stood out for her unwavering support and presence during training sessions. She drove alongside athletes during group rides, providing motivation and encouragement in real-time. The speaker also spent time at a Noosa, Australia training camp, living with and learning from athletes like Leanda Cox, who had already won multiple world championships. This experience broadened the speaker's horizons and fueled their passion for the sport. The takeaway: the power of immersive learning in a supportive and positive environment.

    • The importance of family support in athletics and lifeWinning isn't everything. Balance, support from loved ones, understanding personal limits, and consistency are crucial for long-term success in athletics and life.

Success in athletics and life goes beyond just winning. Achieving second place in a major competition meant more to a world champion athlete because of the presence of her family. This experience taught our speaker the importance of balance and the significance of having loved ones support through victories and failures. Another key lesson learned was understanding personal limits and the importance of consistency, rather than pushing oneself to the brink every day. These lessons have carried over into the speaker's current mountaineering challenge and project, emphasizing the importance of discipline, humility, and the support of loved ones for long-term success.

    • From personal success to making a differenceAthletes can use their talents and platforms to inspire and make a larger impact on the world, beyond personal success.

High-level athletic performance and personal success can be fulfilling, but it may not have a significant impact on the world. A professional triathlete, reflecting on his career, shares how winning a race was a personal achievement, but it felt self-serving. He and his partner decided to use their athleticism and platform to make a larger impact by inspiring and encouraging people to live healthy lifestyles and raising funds for childhood obesity prevention through a world record attempt and Beyond 72 project. The goal is to build a platform, inspire, and raise awareness and funds for the Alliance For A Healthier Generation. This shift from personal success to making a larger impact is a powerful reminder of the potential for using one's talents and resources to make a difference in the world.

    • Combating Childhood Obesity: A Three-Pronged ApproachThe Alliance for a Healthier Generation is making strides in addressing childhood obesity by working with schools, after-school programs, and food and beverage companies to promote healthier options and encourage physical activity.

Addressing childhood obesity is a complex issue that requires a systematic approach. It involves educating children, parents, and stakeholders, changing school environments, and influencing the food industry. The Alliance for a Healthier Generation, founded by the Clinton Foundation and American Heart Association, is making an impact by working with schools, after-school programs, and food and beverage companies to promote healthier options and encourage physical activity. This three-pronged approach addresses the issue from multiple angles and is an important step towards combating the childhood obesity epidemic.

    • Promoting healthier choices through collaboration and advocacyCommunity involvement and advocacy can lead to significant changes in large corporations, like the removal of unhealthy options from children's meals and the addition of healthier alternatives.

Through collaboration and advocacy, individuals can make a difference in promoting healthier choices, even in large corporations like McDonald's. The efforts of Beyond 72, a nonprofit organization, led to the removal of French fries from Happy Meals and the addition of apple slices, impacting children's health. The organization's mission to combat childhood obesity gained significant support from various sponsors, including Nike Foundation, and received media attention. Beyond fundraising, Beyond 72's founder also engaged in school visits to promote healthy habits and goal setting. The project's success demonstrates the power of community involvement and advocacy in creating positive change.

    • Dedication and commitment to making a differenceJenna's commitment to continuing charitable work beyond her current project and using networks for impact. Unconventional choice of mountaineering for giving back and focus on controlling what she can.

Dedication and commitment are essential for making a difference, whether it's through athletic pursuits or philanthropic endeavors. The speaker, Jenna, and her partner are committed to continuing their charitable work beyond their current project, which ends in June 2016. They plan to use their networks to drive impact on the ground and continue fundraising efforts. Jenna chose to embark on a mountaineering adventure instead of a triathlon event to give back, despite it being an unconventional choice for a professional triathlete. She admires the Iron Cowboy's accomplishment of completing five Ironmans in a row but shares the same doubts about the logistics and challenges of such a feat. Jenna's mountaineering project involves facing unforeseen obstacles and tight timelines with limited room for error. She tries to focus on what she can control and prepare herself as best as possible. Her motivation for this project stems from her passion for mountaineering and the opportunity to have a universal message around the importance of stepping out of one's comfort zone and making a difference.

    • Setting ambitious goals with comfort and inspirationFocus on familiar territory, inspire others, and mentally and physically prepare for challenges to achieve ambitious goals

Setting ambitious goals doesn't require being an expert or pushing oneself to the absolute limit. Instead, it's about finding comfort in familiar territory and inspiring others to take small steps towards their own goals. Colin's project of climbing Manaslu, an 8,000-meter mountain, is an example of this universal concept. He prepared physically by shifting his focus from sprint triathlons to long-course races and incorporating mountain-specific strength training. Additionally, he recognized the importance of mental preparation, which he achieved through meditation. This approach emphasizes that everyone can take on challenges, no matter the size, and inspires others to do the same.

    • 10-day silent meditation retreat at Vipassana transformed speaker's mental gamePracticing intense focus and awareness during meditation led to improved mental resilience, overcoming cravings and aversions, and better handling discomfort and pain. It also helped the speaker follow her calling and pivot her career towards a charitable project.

The power of meditation, as shared by a friend, significantly transformed the speaker's mental game and daily life. During a 10-day silent meditation retreat at Vipassana, she practiced intense focus and awareness, sitting in silence for hours each day. Although initially skeptical, this experience proved life-changing, leading to improved mental resilience in sports and her personal life. The practice helped her overcome cravings and aversions, enabling her to better handle discomfort and pain. It also allowed her to check-in with herself and follow her calling, leading to a pivot in her triathlon career towards a charitable project. Despite the challenges, she values the journey and the self-awareness it brought her.

    • Merging passions and practices for personal growthVipassana meditation offers universal mindfulness teachings, accessible to all, leading to emotional growth and lifelong benefits through daily practice.

Merging personal passions with meaningful practices, like triathlon and meditation, can lead to transformative experiences. The Vipassana meditation retreats, which are completely volunteer-run and donation-based, have gained widespread popularity through word-of-mouth and offer a universal teaching of mindfulness and awareness. Unlike traditional religious practices, Vipassana meditation is accessible to people of all faiths and backgrounds without any pressure or financial burden. The daily practice involves regular meditation sessions, especially in the morning, and can bring significant emotional growth and lifelong benefits. Despite the challenges and inconsistencies, maintaining a regular practice is essential for continued personal development. The thriving Vipassana community is a testament to the power and authenticity of this nonprofit meditation movement.

    • Mental fortitude is crucial for polar expeditionsMental preparation is vital for solo polar expeditions, as isolation and harsh conditions can challenge even the most experienced adventurers. Unexpected risks and conditions can make the difference between success and failure.

Mental preparation is just as important as physical preparation when embarking on challenging solo adventures, such as polar expeditions. The mental fortitude required to endure the isolation and harsh conditions can make or break the experience. While some comforts, like books or music, can be brought along to help pass the time, there are limitations to what can be used and carried. The biggest fear for adventurer Ben Fogle is the increased danger and responsibility that comes with mountaineering compared to endurance sports. The commitment level is much higher, and help is not readily available. Even with experience and preparation, unexpected risks and conditions can make the difference between success and failure. Fogle's recent experience on Mount Manasla, where he turned back due to avalanche conditions, highlights the unpredictability and potential consequences of these expeditions.

    • Mountaineering: Personal Limits vs Reasonable RisksMountaineering requires making life-or-death decisions, dealing with internal battles, and recognizing the importance of support and potential impact on others.

Mountaineering involves making life-or-death decisions and dealing with the internal battle between personal limits and reasonable risks. The danger is always present, and the stakes can be high, not just for the climber, but also for those who support and follow the project. The speaker values the support of those around him, especially his mother, who has been both a source of encouragement and a reminder of the potential risks involved. Despite the fears, the speaker is determined to continue the climb, recognizing the importance of the project and the potential impact it can have on others.

The anxious spirit wells up within us. We feel out of control. All focus is lost.

Today is a new day. Today is the best day ever! Calm the anxious spirit.

This weekend I was challenged. My fret and worry was getting in the way. I wanted to see greater results, quicker results. But found myself settling. Those are my emotions I have to own.

When your emotions are a distraction --- WATCH OUT!!!

    It's a red flag --- Beware!!!

"Unless the Lord had given me help, I would soon have dwelt in the silence of death. When I said, "My foot is slipping," your unfailing love, Lord, supported me. When anxiety was great within me, your consolation brought me joy." ~ Psalm 94:17-19

The K.I.S.S. ~ Calm the anxious spirit and dwell in JOY!

Not the joy by your doings. But by God's doings.

Invite Him in to your day.

In episode 45 of Uncharted Performance we visit Trak Athletics and its co-owner, Dave Regula. He tells an inspiring story of a radical lifestyle change that he and his family undertook in order to stay true to themselves. Dave recognizes the importance of training but urges everyone to get out of the gym, even though he owns one. We can do that by playing often, finding new experiences to learn from and not being stuck in that dreaded comfort zone. One of his goals with TrAk was to create a community that was like a family and we think they’ve been more than successful in accomplishing that goal.

53: Getting Into Alignment With Your Best Self

53: Getting Into Alignment With Your Best Self

This Mini Motivator is all about Alignment.

and more specifically, getting into alignment with your best and truest self.

When it comes to creating positive change in your life, two of the most important things you need to do that, are:

    1. Clarity around what you want.

    2. Uncovering and taking the necessary action that will move you closer to that place.

This episode is designed to help spark that clarity and create a sense of self awareness around the things in your life that either bring you closer to alignment, and the things that take you away from that place.

Life is just like one big mirror of how in alignment we are, and when you understand this at a deep level, you will start to see everything in a new way.

    Hope you love the episode!
