Derek From More Plates More Dates: His +$100M Business Empire, Bryan Johnson & TRT

    enSeptember 12, 2023

    Podcast Summary

    • Derek's Success and Navigating Challenges in the SubredditDerek's ability to create valuable content and maintain a loyal following highlights the importance of authenticity and resilience in achieving success in online communities.

Derek has achieved significant success in his businesses and has a dedicated following on his subreddit. Shaan, however, made the mistake of assuming that the subreddit was solely composed of genuine fans seeking thoughtful conversation, when in reality there was a lot of trolling and inappropriate comments. Despite the challenges of videography and lack of knowledge in that area, Derek has managed to create high-quality and well-researched content that resonates with his audience. His success is evident from the revenue his businesses generate and his ability to maintain a loyal subscriber base. The rumor about Derek intentionally replicating the background of his previous homes emphasizes his humility and authenticity.

    • The Strategic Use of Online Anonymity for Privacy and PopularityHiding one's identity online can lead to privacy and popularity, while unconventional paths like pickup, gaming, and debating can cultivate unique perspectives and skills applicable in various domains.

Hiding one's identity online can be a strategic move to avoid unwanted attention and maintain privacy. Derek, the individual being discussed, has managed to keep his full name hidden and still achieve popularity. While there may be concerns about leaving a lasting legacy without revealing his last name, Derek believes it has worked out well for him so far. Additionally, the conversation highlights the backgrounds that often lead to interesting and successful people. The pickup world, like gaming and debating, can cultivate certain life skills that can be beneficial in various areas, such as business or leadership. This suggests that unconventional paths can offer unique perspectives and skills in different domains.

    • Applying Social Dynamics to Business SuccessSuccess in one area does not guarantee overall happiness. Strive for personal growth and balance to achieve sustained success and happiness in all aspects of life.

There is a definite overlap between social dynamics and business success. The skills and mindset gained from the pickup artist world, such as confidence and the ability to optimize different areas of life, can be applied to entrepreneurial endeavors. However, it is important to note that achieving success in one area, like attracting women, does not guarantee overall happiness or fulfillment. Many individuals in the pickup artist community struggle with maintaining healthy relationships and life satisfaction. Therefore, it is crucial to look beyond initial successes and consider the long-term impact of one's actions and choices. Learning from the experiences of others and striving for personal growth and balance can lead to sustained success and happiness in all aspects of life.

    • The Role of Branding in Trust and PreferenceConsidering the target audience and trust factor is vital in determining an effective branding strategy. Understanding the true value of a business requires analyzing multiple layers of data to accurately assess its performance. Well-executed branding can greatly contribute to a company's success and value.

Branding plays a crucial role in consumer trust and preference. While certain niches require more trusted and traditional branding, such as dietary supplements and multivitamins, edgier and more hardcore branding can be effective for products like pre-workouts and cognitive enhancers. The trust factor and target audience should be considered when determining the branding strategy for a business. Additionally, the conversation highlights the importance of understanding the true value and revenue of a business beyond surface-level traffic statistics. Multiple layers of analysis, such as sales data and knowledge of distribution channels, can provide a more accurate understanding of a business's performance. Ultimately, well-executed branding can contribute significantly to a company's success and potentially increase its overall value.

    • Differentiating in the Competitive Telemedicine IndustryIn the telemedicine industry, success lies in providing quality care, doctor oversight, and highly educated providers while ensuring compliance and differentiation from cookie-cutter solutions.

The telemedicine industry, specifically in the high-level preventative medicine diagnostic space, offers superior margins and is the way of the future. However, it is important to differentiate oneself from other telemedicine clinics that provide cookie-cutter solutions. The focus should be on providing quality care, doctor oversight, and highly educated providers. The core team consists of individuals for operational, marketing, content, product formulation, manufacturing, supply chain, fulfillment, warehouse, distribution, legal, accounting, finance, and retail aspects. The team works on ensuring compliance and staying above board in the telemedicine space, as there are illegal clinics and compounding pharmacies that prescribe unsafe or low-quality drugs. While supplement companies are challenging, ventures like Merrick Health and compound pharmacy pose even greater challenges due to regulations and handling of commodities.

    • Evaluating the Risks and Benefits of Venturing into PharmacyCareful consideration is necessary when considering entering the pharmacy business, keeping in mind the need for control over the supply chain, trust and quality control, and potential risks involved.

While there may be potential benefits and opportunities in venturing into the pharmacy business, it is important to carefully consider the risks and potential impact on existing ventures. Derek mentions that having control over the supply chain can be beneficial, but it also requires significant time and resources. He highlights the importance of trust and quality control in the pharmacy industry, as well as the variability and potential risks involved in compounding drugs. Sam raises concerns about the potential impact of branching out into the pharmacy business, suggesting that focusing on existing successful ventures may be a better use of time and resources. Ultimately, the decision to pursue pharmacy should be thoroughly evaluated and based on the specific context and priorities of the individual or business.

    • Setting goals and finding purpose in businessSetting clear goals and having a plan is important for success, but it is equally important to focus on continuous growth and personal fulfillment rather than solely chasing financial milestones.

Setting clear and concrete business goals is crucial for success. It is important to have a vision and a plan to achieve that vision. Sam Parr emphasizes the idea of financial independence and shares a podcast that focuses on saving and earning money. On the other hand, Derek believes that his companies, Guerilla Mind and Merrick Health, have the potential to become billion-dollar organizations. While these goals may seem ambitious, they provide a sense of direction and purpose. However, the conversation also highlights the importance of not solely chasing vanity metrics, as true success lies in continuous growth and personal fulfillment rather than achieving a specific milestone.

    • Factors influencing success: self-perception, perception of others, and flexibility; Derek's focus on prevention and education; leveraging influencer trust; credibility key for global expansion and retail entry.Success is influenced by self-perception, flexibility, and leveraging influence. Building trust and credibility are crucial for expanding globally and entering new markets.

The success of businesses and personal goals can be influenced by factors like self-perception, how others perceive us, and the flexibility we have in pursuing our passions. In the context of Derek's businesses, his focus on preventing medicine and educating people at scale is driven by his passion for Merrick Health. The success of his businesses is also attributed to the trust he has built with his influencers and their combined following, which has allowed him to leverage their influence without solely relying on his own popularity. Additionally, Derek's ability to expand globally and enter the retail market is not solely dependent on acquiring new influencers, but rather on the credibility and reputation his brand has built. Overall, the conversation highlights the importance of finding a balance between personal ambition and the trust and credibility we build in our pursuits.

    • The Power of Single-Goal FocusFocusing on one goal at a time allows for devoted attention and increased success. By prioritizing and allocating dedicated time, individuals can achieve exceptional quality in pursuits and find support through stable relationships.

It can be beneficial to focus on one life goal at a time instead of trying to juggle multiple ambitions simultaneously. Pursuing goals in stages or seasons allows individuals to devote their full attention and energy to each objective, increasing the chances of success. This approach applies to various aspects of life, including relationships, entrepreneurship, and personal development. It is important to prioritize and allocate dedicated time blocks for specific goals, whether it be building social skills, focusing on physical fitness, or growing a business. By segregating goals into seasons, individuals can achieve exceptional quality in their pursuits and avoid spreading themselves thin. Additionally, having stability in relationships can provide valuable support and motivation when facing challenges in business or personal endeavors.

    • The Importance of Educating Yourself and Making Informed Choices in Wealth ManagementWealthy entrepreneurs should be cautious of wealth management advisors prioritizing their own profits and understand investment options before committing to them to ensure optimal financial outcomes.

Wealth management portfolios from big banks can often underperform basic index funds and result in high management fees. It is important for wealthy entrepreneurs to be cautious when dealing with wealth management advisors as they may prioritize their own profits over the client's interests. Additionally, managing finances in Canada can be more complex due to complicated tax planning. The conversation highlights the importance of understanding investment options before committing to them and avoiding investments that are not fully understood. Derek's experience of liquidating his wealth management portfolio and keeping his money in bank accounts reflects the need for careful decision-making when it comes to financial investments. Overall, it is crucial for individuals to educate themselves and make informed choices to ensure their money works optimally for them.

    • Achieving Success Through Genuine Integration and CredibilityTo achieve success, integrate products or services that are genuinely believed in, build initial funds through affiliate commissions, stay updated with evolving trends, and strive to become a supplier rather than just an affiliate.

Success is subjective and can be achieved by organically integrating products or services that one already uses and believes in. It is important to avoid promoting products or services that one does not genuinely care about or believe in, as it can damage credibility and discourage people from following product recommendations. Building initial funds through affiliate commissions or endorsing products already in use can provide a stepping stone to starting one's own businesses. Additionally, staying updated with evolving trends and platforms for product recommendations, such as social media, is crucial in ensuring relevance and reaching the target audience. Ultimately, finding opportunities to become a supplier rather than just an affiliate can lead to greater success in the long run.

    • Ensuring Reliable Health and Wellness Information in a Noisy NicheSeek trustworthy experts who offer evidence-based recommendations and practical advice, while being cautious of influencers who prioritize attention over expertise. Remember that translating complex information may lead to important details being overlooked.

Trust is crucial in the health and wellness niche, as there are numerous conflicting recommendations and untrustworthy educators. The conversation highlights that many influencers and experts may say outrageous things just for attention, without being true authorities in their field. This creates confusion for individuals seeking reliable information. The suggestion is to find a small group of reputable experts with both a high trust factor and extensive knowledge. These individuals should provide evidence-based recommendations that are practical and valuable. It is also mentioned that becoming an expert in a certain field requires years of self-education and learning from legitimate sources. However, it is emphasized that translating complex scientific information into layman's terms can be challenging, leading to important details being overlooked or ignored.

    • The Trend of Prioritizing Physical Fitness in the Tech IndustryWhile it is encouraging to see individuals in the tech industry focusing on improving their physical fitness, it is crucial to be cautious and seek expert opinions before adopting any extreme methods or relying solely on fitness trackers.

There is a growing trend in the tech industry of prioritizing muscle mass and quality of life. Many individuals, including prominent figures like Bezos and Zuck, are focusing on improving their physical fitness. While it is seen as a positive shift towards a healthier lifestyle, there is disagreement regarding the methods employed to achieve these results. Some believe that certain approaches, such as extreme calorie deprivation followed by testosterone supplementation, may be contradictory and potentially harmful. Additionally, the conversation raises doubts about the efficacy of certain trackers, like age clocks, in accurately reflecting overall health status. It is important to approach these fitness trends with caution and seek expert opinions before making decisions about one's own health journey.

    • The variability of hormone treatments and their impact on well-beingHormone treatments affect individuals differently, making it necessary to personalize decisions based on individual circumstances and consult with medical professionals.

Individuals have different experiences with hormone treatments and their effects on overall well-being. While some may see positive results and feel great, others may not notice significant changes or may even feel worse. It's important to understand that hormone levels and their impact on the body vary from person to person. Therefore, undergoing hormone treatments should be a personalized decision based on individual circumstances and needs. Additionally, factors such as lifestyle, stress levels, and overall health can also play a role in how treatments affect individuals. Ultimately, it's crucial to listen to one's body and make informed decisions about hormone treatments after consulting with medical professionals.

    • Use of drugs and peptides for recovery and appetite suppression requires caution and careful consideration to avoid unintended consequences and potential long-term risks. It is crucial to weigh the benefits and risks of using drugs and peptides for recovery and appetite suppression, especially in children, and to prioritize obtaining high-quality meats from local butchers for a healthy diet.

There are various drugs and peptides available for recovery and appetite suppression, but caution must be exercised in their use. While these drugs can be useful for specific contexts and injuries, overuse may lead to unintended consequences, such as promoting cancer cell development. The conversation also explores the potential benefits of GLP 1 agonists in controlling blood sugar spikes and aiding alcoholics. However, there are concerns about their long-term use, especially in children. It is important to consider individual cases and assess if the benefits outweigh the risks. Additionally, the conversation touches on the quality and availability of food, with a focus on obtaining high-quality meats from local butchers.

    • The Challenge of Sourcing Quality Food ProductsPrioritizing nutritional benefits and navigating the complexities of the food industry are crucial in making informed choices about food and nutrition.

Sourcing quality food products can be a significant challenge, both in terms of availability and cost. Derek highlights how he prioritizes purchasing the best available options, even if they are more expensive, because he believes in the nutritional benefits. However, the conversation also touches upon the difficulty of knowing what is truly healthy and the conflicting information surrounding supplements and whole foods. This demonstrates the overwhelming nature of trying to make informed choices about food and nutrition. Ultimately, the discussion highlights the importance of being mindful of the quality of our food and the need to navigate the complexities of the industry to make optimal choices.

Approval and Attention Seeking: Looking Outside of You To Feel Good Enough

Approval and Attention Seeking: Looking Outside of You To Feel Good Enough

As children, our sense of worthiness hinges on the approval, attention, validation, and protection of others. When we do not receive the consistent, maternal warmth every child needs to develop the psychological sense that we are enough, we matter, and that we are good, and acceptable even when we make a mistake or do not always behave as our parents prefer, this mystical connection to the self is fractured.

In this space, our survival brain and even the root chakra, operate from a place of survival. Rather than live from our hearts, embracing ourselves as works in progress, without self loathing and internal self-abuse, we develop hypervigilance codependency traits and are soaked in insecure attachment issues. All these effects are normal, considering being raised to feel alone, invisible, abandoned, and detached from the authentic self.

On the road to personal development, spiritual healing, and living an authentic life, all serious truth seekers find themselves questioning the thoughts, emotions, patterns, and behaviors that inhibit their spiritual growth. If you are here, and you are learning to become more objective about how you show up in the world, that's incredible. It may also be painful. However, to grow we must all confront what we feel, why we feel what we feel, and how the past organically recreates itself in our future, all outside conscious awareness. In this episode, Lisa A. Romano will help you explore how you show up in the world and reveal signs that indicate you might be stuck, living out unhealed childhood patterns by seeking approval and attention outside of yourself. Awareness is necessary for spiritual healing, personal growth, and living a conscious, authentic life, so buckle in Dear Ones.

Lisa has created a private Membership for those who are ready to ascend the patterns of the past and who understand that real healing can only happen at the subconscious level. Join Lisa and her healing private community here.
