    enFebruary 15, 2021

    Podcast Summary

    • Childhood experiences shape our futureDespite difficult childhoods, resilience and values can lead to a successful and fulfilling future

Our childhood experiences significantly shape who we become as adults. Ben Williams, a guest on the Diary of a CEO podcast, shared his harrowing story of growing up in a broken home marked by domestic violence and abuse. Despite facing numerous challenges, including addiction and a manslaughter case, Ben's life took a dramatic turn when a YouTube ad inspired him to change his life. His journey from suicidal drug addict to elite commando and tech entrepreneur underscores the power of resilience and the importance of holding on to values during adversity. Ben's childhood, marked by his parents' rough divorce and subsequent financial struggles, instilled in him a determination to overcome challenges and find purpose in life. His story serves as a reminder that our past experiences, while often difficult, can provide the foundation for a successful and fulfilling future.

    • Childhood experiences shape our livesEarly experiences, especially family dynamics, can significantly impact our future behavior and worldview

Childhood experiences, particularly those involving family dynamics and transitions, can have profound and lasting impacts on an individual's life. These experiences may not be fully processed or understood until much later in life. The speaker shares how his parents' separation and subsequent relationships affected him, leading him to struggle with fitting in at school and turning to heavy metal music and eventually drugs as a coping mechanism. The trauma and instability of his childhood shaped his worldview and influenced his behavior, highlighting the importance of acknowledging and addressing the emotional impact of childhood experiences.

    • Societal pressures and external factors influencing negative choicesRecognize how societal pressures and external factors can impact our decisions and potentially lead to harmful behaviors.

The desire to fit in and be perceived as an alpha male led the speaker to experiment with drugs, become a bouncer, and eventually use steroids. This desire was influenced by media portrayals of gangster culture and a sense of rejection from his desired path in life. The speaker's anger and frustration from being denied the opportunity to join the Marines at a younger age also contributed to his negative choices. It's important to recognize how external factors and societal pressures can impact one's decisions and potentially lead to harmful behaviors.

    • The need for validation and lack of positive male role models can lead to dangerous behaviorsIndividuals may seek power and control through violence and aggression due to a lack of positive male role models and a desire for validation, but this path can lead to negative consequences and a better alternative is to seek validation from within.

The desire for validation and acceptance, coupled with a lack of positive male role models, can lead individuals to seek power and control in dangerous ways. The speaker's experience of becoming a door supervisor at a young age, driven by a need for validation from women and a sense of purpose, ultimately resulted in a dangerous and violent lifestyle. This pattern was also seen in someone close to the speaker, who turned to steroids and fighting to fill a similar void. The speaker's mother, who was the only significant male figure in his life, may have influenced his desire to be seen as strong and in control. However, it was a neighbor's warning that opened his eyes to the potential dangers and negative consequences of this path. Ultimately, the speaker came to realize that the validation he sought could come from within and that he didn't need to resort to violence and aggression to gain respect.

    • Feeling Purposeless Can Lead to Tragic ConsequencesFeeling purposeless can lead to destructive patterns and even harm to oneself and others. Finding meaning and direction is essential for personal growth and well-being.

Losing a sense of purpose can lead to dangerous and destructive situations. The speaker's experience at a nightclub resulted in a tragic accident that took a man's life and left a lasting impact on the speaker. The incident, along with personal struggles, led the speaker to feel lost and purposeless. Research suggests that this feeling of purposelessness contributes to the increasing trend of opioid addiction and decreasing life expectancy. It's crucial for individuals to find meaning and direction in their lives to avoid falling into destructive patterns and potential harm to themselves and others.

    • From despair to transformationHitting rock bottom can inspire profound personal growth. Find motivation in unexpected places.

Hitting rock bottom can lead to profound personal growth. The speaker shares his experience of getting lost in daily drug use, feeling aimless and worthless, despite coming from a privileged background. He reached a point of despair, contemplating suicide, but didn't follow through. Instead, he stumbled upon an old Royal Marines recruitment video on YouTube. The video showcased the grueling endurance course, and the speaker was inspired. He decided to apply and join the Royal Marines, which marked a turning point in his life. The video stayed with him, and he still watches it today as a reminder of his transformation. This experience underscores the power of hitting rock bottom and the potential for growth that can come from it.

    • Finding Courage in Personal LifeCourage is about making difficult decisions and overcoming fears, which can involve letting go of unhealthy habits, embracing physical fitness, and facing challenges with determination. True courage comes from within and leads to a healthier, more fulfilling life.

Courage is not just about taking bold actions in the face of danger, but also about making difficult decisions in our personal lives. The speaker shares his experience of finding the courage to leave a toxic relationship and pursue a dream, despite feeling late and uncertain. He describes the inner struggle and external support that helped him overcome his fears and take the first steps towards a healthier and more fulfilling life. This journey involved letting go of unhealthy habits, embracing physical fitness, and facing challenges with determination. Ultimately, the speaker found that true courage comes from within and that the validation we seek often comes from within ourselves.

    • Discovering one's purpose illuminates the pathFinding one's passion and direction in life can be a transformative experience, even after facing challenges like addiction and suicidal ideation. It provides a sense of orientation and fulfillment.

The power of finding one's purpose and direction in life can be a transformative experience, even for those who have faced significant challenges such as addiction and suicidal ideation. The speaker described the moment he discovered his passion for becoming a Royal Marines commando as a "north star" that illuminated his path and gave him a sense of orientation and purpose. This journey involved overcoming various obstacles, including addiction and the fear of the unknown, but the speaker found fulfillment in the process, from the moment he decided to pursue his goal to the moment he arrived at the training camp. The experience of being surrounded by excellence and the values of the Royal Marines only strengthened his resolve and pride. Despite the challenges, the speaker found the process of getting there to be extremely rewarding and motivating.

    • Finding the motivation to changeOvercoming negative thoughts, recognizing desires, and having courage are key to making a change in life. Change takes consistent effort and determination, but the rewards are worth it.

Finding the motivation to make a change in life can be a challenging process. It often requires overcoming negative thoughts and finding a sense of purpose or desire to propel oneself forward. The pain of staying the same must become greater than the pain of making a change. Courage is also a crucial factor, as it takes bravery to take the first steps towards achieving one's goals. It's essential to remember that change doesn't happen overnight, but rather through consistent effort and determination. As friends and family, we can support those going through tough times by recognizing their desires and encouraging them to take the hard, but ultimately rewarding, path.

    • Friend's relatability motivated speaker to join MarinesBelieving in one's potential and finding a relatable role model can help overcome challenges and achieve goals.

Having a relatable role model can be a powerful motivator to overcome challenges and achieve goals. The speaker shared his experience of a friend joining the Marines and encouraging him to do the same, despite the friend being ahead in the process and seemingly stronger. This friend's relatability made the speaker believe that he too could succeed, even when faced with self-doubt and intimidation from peers. The speaker emphasized that everyone has the potential to get to the starting point, and it's those who take the first step that ultimately succeed. The commando mindset, as the speaker described, is a particular way of thinking that requires courage and belief in oneself, even in the face of adversity. By sharing his own story of struggling academically but ultimately finding success through the Marines, the speaker hoped to inspire others to believe in their own potential and overcome their own challenges.

    • The commander mindset: a set of values for honesty and accountabilityThe commander mindset, rooted in values like courage, determination, excellence, self-discipline, integrity, cheerfulness, and humility, fosters honesty and accountability in individuals and groups, especially crucial during combat situations where integrity of information and quick decision-making can mean the difference between life and death.

The commander mindset, a set of values including courage, determination, excellence, self-discipline, integrity, cheerfulness, and humility, fosters honesty and accountability among individuals and groups. This ethos was particularly crucial during combat situations, where the integrity of information and quick decision-making could mean the difference between life and death. In extreme circumstances, such as a firefight, the commander mindset enables individuals to stay focused, return fire effectively, and make calculated decisions to ensure survival. The importance of integrity, a core value of the commander mindset, was emphasized as an unbreakable commitment, much like one's virginity, which could only be lost once.

    • Embracing Values and Mindset in Challenging SituationsStaying true to values and embracing a positive mindset are essential for overcoming adversity and maintaining focus during difficult times.

Our values and mindset are crucial in challenging situations. The story shared highlights the importance of staying true to one's values, even in the face of danger. The commander's simple command to "check your flashes" served as a powerful reminder for the marines to switch on and embrace their training and values. Cheerfulness in the face of adversity and the pursuit of excellence were two specific values mentioned as essential for maintaining morale and focus during difficult times. The story underscores the idea that our mindset and values can give us the courage and determination to overcome obstacles and stay resilient. The Marines' training instills these values deeply, and they serve as powerful tools when faced with adversity.

    • Strive for excellence and give your best effortConsistently perform at a high standard, set accomplishments as goals, and celebrate victories, no matter the size. Encourage excellence over praising effort alone.

Striving for excellence and putting in your maximum effort in everything you do is essential for personal growth and making a positive impact, even on the worst days. Perfection may not exist, but consistently performing at a high standard is achievable. However, in today's culture, there's a growing trend towards praising effort over accomplishment, which can be detrimental as it removes the sense of purpose and orientation. This can lead to a lack of motivation, depression, and other negative outcomes. Instead, we should encourage individuals to set North Stars, strive for accomplishments, and celebrate their victories, no matter how small. The military serves as an excellent example of this mindset, where excellence is not about being the fastest or the strongest, but about giving your best effort every time.

    • Encouraging excellence over participationInstead of rewarding just for showing up, strive for excellence and set goals to achieve purpose and accomplishment. Avoid the negative effects of a 'participation culture' and join authentic partnerships with genuine motivation.

We should not reward people just for participating or turning up, but instead encourage and reward those who put in maximum effort and strive for excellence. The speaker emphasized the importance of having a goal or competition to aim for, as it provides a sense of purpose and accomplishment. He shared his personal experiences from the military, where they were encouraged to go beyond the minimum requirements and not just tick boxes. The speaker also warned against the potential negative effects of the "participation culture" that is prevalent in society today, which can lead to a lack of striving and accomplishment, and potentially even depression. He concluded by sharing his excitement about joining the board of Hewall, a company he deeply admires and has a personal connection to, as an authentic and motivated partner.

    • From small opportunities to big impactsSmall opportunities can lead to significant growth and meaningful relationships. Don't settle for good, hold out for great.

Sometimes opportunities that start small can grow into something much bigger and more meaningful. The speaker shares how a podcast sponsorship led to a formalized relationship and a board membership with a company. He also reflects on his military experience, sharing how a seemingly insignificant event, the explosion of a melon IED, led to the end of his military career and the beginning of a new chapter. Despite the danger and chaos of the situation, he found himself in, he persevered and fought to protect his team. These experiences, both professional and personal, have shaped his belief in holding out for great opportunities and not settling for good ones.

    • A small decision led to a dangerous ambushPaying attention to surroundings and staying alert can prevent major consequences in dangerous situations

Even the smallest decisions and seemingly insignificant events can have major consequences in dangerous situations. The speaker describes how a simple decision to switch positions with a fellow Marine during a patrol led them into an ambush where they were both injured by a roadside bomb. The speaker also emphasizes the importance of paying attention to their "spidey sensors" and the environment around them, as the presence of the Taliban was indicated by small details such as the type of footwear they wore. This experience underscores the importance of staying alert and adaptable in high-risk situations.

    • Surviving a Bomb Blast: Shock, Pain, Relief, and TeamworkSurviving a bomb blast involves intense emotions, physical pain, and a realization of life's fragility. Teamwork and quick thinking are crucial in emergency situations.

The experience of surviving a bomb blast involves a range of intense and surreal moments. The individual's first reaction is often shock and disbelief, accompanied by physical pain and the fear of losing limbs or other vital body parts. However, there is also a sense of relief and even humor when it is discovered that the injuries are not as severe as initially thought. Surviving such an event also brings a stark realization of the vulnerability of one's own life and the importance of helping others, even in the midst of chaos and pain. The actions of fellow soldiers, such as the marine who helped apply a tourniquet to a wounded comrade, demonstrate the importance of teamwork and quick thinking in emergency situations. Overall, the experience of surviving a bomb blast is a profound and transformative one, leaving a lasting impact on those who go through it.

    • War's lasting impact on individualsWar leaves physical and emotional scars, requiring healing and adjustment to civilian life

War leaves indelible marks on those who experience it. The speaker, a former marine, shares his personal journey of survival and recovery after facing the intense realities of war. He describes the physical and emotional scars he and his comrades endured, and the challenges they faced upon leaving the military. The speaker also discusses his experience with PTSD and how he overcame a relapse. Despite the hardships, he found a new purpose in helping others through coaching and transitioning his command and mindset skills to civilian life. Overall, the speaker's story underscores the profound impact of war on individuals and the importance of processing and healing from its effects.

    • The profound impact of military serviceMilitary service shapes individuals through personal growth and the ability to make a positive impact on others, despite the challenges of combat and the emotional toll.

Military service, especially in a challenging environment like Afghanistan, can have a profound impact on individuals. The constant threat of IEDs and the physical and emotional toll of combat can lead to a sense of bitterness and feeling forgotten upon returning home. However, finding a new sense of purpose, such as mentoring new recruits or working with other teams, can help in the healing process and provide a valuable sense of accomplishment. The England football team's visit to experience military training was a surreal moment for the speaker, highlighting the importance of courage, excellence, and other values in both military and athletic pursuits. Ultimately, the experience of military service shapes individuals in profound ways, both in terms of personal growth and the ability to make a positive impact on others.

    • Unexpected conversations bring people closer togetherAuthentic conversations inspire courage and unity, even in unexpected situations. Acknowledge, reflect, and act accordingly to navigate adversity.

Authentic and organic conversations can bring people closer together, even in the most unexpected situations. This was evident in a conversation between a football commentator and the England captain, where they discussed scoring goals in front of large crowds and the experience of war. Despite the vastly different topics, the conversation felt natural and genuine. The England team, inspired by such conversations, brought a new sense of courage and unity to the World Cup, earning praise and bringing the nation closer together. The commentator also shared his personal strategy, A.R.A, for dealing with adversity, which involves acknowledging the situation, reflecting on it, and acting accordingly. This strategy, rooted in his experiences in the military, has helped him navigate challenges both on and off the football field.

    • Managing Crisis with ARA FrameworkIn times of crisis, accept the situation, remove emotional charge, and adapt to find solutions instead of dwelling on the problem.

In times of adversity or crisis, it's crucial to maintain a clear and focused mindset. Going in emotionally charged can lead to cataclysmic errors. The ARA framework - Accept, Remove, Adapt - can help process difficult situations. Acceptance is the first step, but it's not about dwelling on blame or bitterness. Instead, focus on what can be done next. Removing emotion doesn't mean becoming emotionless, but dealing with it and moving on. Adapting to the situation is the final step. It's about finding solutions instead of getting bogged down by the problem. Whether it's a personal or professional crisis, the ARA framework can help maintain focus and make effective decisions.

    • Embrace challenges and find calm amid chaosRecognize and let go of unwanted emotions to adapt, find activities for personal growth, and embrace challenges to avoid unnecessary losses and find joy.

Life can throw unexpected challenges our way, causing emotional responses that can hinder our ability to adapt and move forward. It's essential to recognize and let go of unwanted emotions to make the best decisions and find calm amid chaos. The first challenge is often involuntary, but the second one is a choice. Finding activities that provide an escape, like running, can help us focus on personal growth and striving for excellence. Running, in particular, allows us to disconnect from distractions and find clarity in nature. By embracing the challenges we face and choosing to adapt, we can avoid taking unnecessary losses and find joy in unexpected places.

    • Fostering a supportive work environment through emotional check-insIntegrating emotional check-ins into daily work routines using platforms like Slack can promote mental health awareness and foster a supportive work environment.

Running, whether it's on the road or in the military, can serve as a source of freedom, adventure, and personal growth. However, it's important to acknowledge and address emotional struggles, as bottling them up can lead to negative consequences. The speaker's experience in the military, where he learned the value of integrity and the importance of checking in on each other's wellbeing, inspired him to create Lupin, a platform that asks team members how they're feeling every morning, using Slack Teams integration. This simple action can help foster a supportive work environment and promote mental health awareness. Overall, the speaker's journey highlights the importance of being open about emotions, seeking support, and creating systems that prioritize wellbeing.

    • Identifying early signs of employee morale issuesTransparency and empathetic communication can help identify potential issues with employee morale, saving valuable talent and leading to a more productive workforce. Embrace resilience and perseverance in the face of adversity.

Transparency and empathetic communication within a team or organization can lead to early identification of potential issues with employee morale, which can ultimately save the business from losing valuable talent. This was highlighted during the discussion about the importance of recognizing and addressing the "amber" signs of team members, as well as the value of being open and transparent in business, even during challenging times. The pandemic has shown us that embracing this approach can lead to a more productive and engaged workforce. Another key takeaway is the importance of resilience and perseverance in the face of adversity. The speaker shared his own experiences of struggling in business and how listening to others' stories helped him to keep going and ultimately succeed. Overall, the conversation emphasized the importance of empathy, transparency, and resilience in both personal and professional contexts.

    • The speaker's heartfelt plea for readers to invest in his new bookListeners are encouraged to pre-order the speaker's new book 'Happy Sexy Millionaire' for exclusive content and personal thanks, as pre-orders hold significant weight in the publishing industry.

The speaker is deeply passionate about sharing the insights and experiences from his life, which he has poured his heart and soul into, through his new book "Happy Sexy Millionaire." He emphasizes that every word in the book is his own, and there are surprising and valuable revelations to be found. He wishes it wasn't necessary to have to sell the book for people to access it, but acknowledges that in the publishing industry, a publisher and distribution are essential. He urges listeners who have enjoyed his previous work to pre-order the book, as pre-orders hold significant weight in the industry. In return, the speaker promises to send exclusive content to those who pre-order, including voice notes, access to tickets, and personal thanks. Overall, the speaker's heartfelt plea is for readers to invest in his book, as it represents the most important thing he has ever created.
