LinkedIn's supplemental insurance plans, like UnitedHealthcare's Health Protector Guard, can help manage out-of-pocket costs. Embrace diverse perspectives and preferences to navigate life's situations.

LinkedIn is an essential platform for small businesses looking to hire professionals. It's where you can find candidates who might not be actively searching for a new job but could be open to the right opportunity. LinkedIn's user base is significant, with over 70% not visiting other leading job sites in a given month. So, if you're looking to hire, start your search on LinkedIn. Another takeaway is that being extra can pay off, especially when it comes to health care. UnitedHealthcare's Health Protector Guard fixed indemnity insurance plans supplement your primary plan, helping you manage out-of-pocket costs without usual requirements and restrictions. Lastly, while it's essential to celebrate milestones, not everyone appreciates them the same way. Some people might only watch the sequels of films and not the original, which can be irritating for some. Understanding different perspectives and preferences can help us navigate various situations in life.

    • Friend's extreme cinema obsessionPeople have unique entertainment preferences and habits, and these differences can sometimes lead to misunderstandings and frustration.

The speaker and his friend used to have a tradition of going to the cinema every Sunday, which they called "Cinema Sundays." However, during one summer, the friend's behavior changed drastically, and they spent nearly every waking hour at the cinema for six weeks straight. The speaker found this behavior baffling and frustrating, especially since they could only attend the cinema with their friend once a week. The speaker also expressed confusion about why some people enjoy watching sad films and crying, while he finds it unappealing. The conversation also touched upon the specific films they watched during that period and the friend's refusal to watch certain films in order. Overall, the conversation highlighted the difference in entertainment preferences and habits between the two friends.

    • Disagreement and Distractions at the Recycling CenterDespite feeling under the weather and a disagreement, the speaker managed to tackle their clutter at the recycling center and encouraged listeners to do the same.

The speaker had a disagreement about a jingle and was feeling under the weather, but managed to visit the recycling center and get rid of unwanted items. During the conversation, they also discussed movies, specifically a trilogy, and got the terms prequel and origin story mixed up. The speaker was teased about this mistake and a jingle was played. • Finding Value in Discarded Items and the Absurdity of Everyday LifePeople sometimes overlook the value of discarded items and the importance of clear communication can prevent confusion and absurd situations.

Sometimes, people throw away valuable items unknowingly, while others go to great lengths to retrieve them. The speaker shared an experience of finding a jigsaw of cowboys at the tip, which he wanted to take home but didn't know who had glued it together. He also mentioned the recurring issue of packages being delivered to their house for a man named Tony, despite their different addresses. The speaker also expressed his frustration with organized people and their disregard for handmade signs at the tip. He acknowledged the essential role of delivery drivers during the pandemic but joked about the confusion caused by the misdelivered packages. Overall, the conversation touched upon the themes of valuing what others discard, the importance of clear communication, and the occasional absurdity of everyday life.

    • A humorous conversation about technology and generational differencesOlder generations rely on traditional methods while younger generations prefer technology for convenience, but both generations face challenges with package deliveries.

Technology and generational differences were topics of amusement during a conversation between two individuals. One person, who had never used Uber, found it humorous that older generations, including his parents, would still call companies like Amazon for orders, while the younger generation uses apps for convenience. However, the conversation took an unexpected turn when they discussed a delivery mishap, where a sideboard was left half on the porch and the delivery men left without bringing it in. The older generation's reliance on traditional methods and the younger generation's preference for technology were contrasted throughout the conversation. Another interesting topic that came up was the issue of package deliveries being mixed up in neighborhoods with similar names. Overall, the conversation highlighted the contrasting experiences and perspectives of different generations when it comes to technology and everyday life.

    • Misunderstandings from AssumptionsClear communication and avoiding assumptions are crucial to prevent misunderstandings and potential conflicts.

Assumptions can lead to misunderstandings and misjudgments. In the discussed story, a woman was accused of stealing a parcel from a neighbor's house based on CCTV footage, but it turned out that she had tried to deliver it to the right person. However, her neighbor had made assumptions about her identity and intentions without knowing the full story. Similarly, in another conversation, a friend asked a simple question about how a tree falls over, leading to a baffling exchange between them. These incidents illustrate how important it is to communicate clearly and avoid jumping to conclusions based on limited information. It's always essential to consider the context and ask questions to clarify any doubts, rather than making assumptions that could lead to unnecessary conflicts or misunderstandings.

    • The joys and challenges of parenthoodParenting brings immense joy and love, but also complexities and difficulties. Cherishing the experience is crucial, as it shapes us deeply and is not fully understood without personal experience.

Despite the challenges and limitations of parenthood, the joy and love experienced far outweighs the difficulties. She imagines a solution involving advanced scientific technology to keep her children as embryos inside her for six years, but ultimately decides against it due to the inconvenience and exhaustion. She also reflects on her past beliefs and experiences, acknowledging that she once thought she would never co-sleep with her child but now does so willingly. Despite the exhaustion, she appreciates the current stage of her life and the freedom it brings. The conversation also includes a humorous exchange about excluding certain scientists from helping with the solution due to their past work on movies like Jurassic Park.

    • Netflix's 'Play Something' Button: A Luxury or a Distraction? Some appreciate the convenience of Netflix's 'Play Something' button, while others feel envy or regret due to their own time constraints or distractions.

The speaker is expressing frustration and annoyance towards their partner for constantly sharing their experiences, especially through social media, during times when the speaker wants privacy and peace. The partner's behavior, which includes lying in bed watching and reliving their night out through their phone, is ruining the speaker's ability to relax and unwind. The speaker also criticizes their partner for excessive drinking and the negative impact it has on their life, particularly their inability to enjoy daytime activities during certain seasons. The speaker suggests that day drinking should be more socially acceptable and that they prefer going out during off-peak hours when there are fewer people. The conversation also touches upon the speaker's own lack of friends and hobbies, which they blame their partner for not scheduling nights out with. Overall, the speaker's beef with their partner is their inconsiderate behavior and the negative impact it has on their personal life.

    • Impact of Emotions on InteractionsOur emotions can unintentionally come across as rude or insensitive to others, so it's important to be mindful and make amends when necessary.

Sometimes, in the midst of emotional moments, we may unintentionally come across as rude or insensitive to others. The speaker in this discussion recounted an experience where they were crying in public and declined a request for a picture, leaving the person feeling embarrassed. While the speaker didn't mean to be rude, they recognized the impact of their actions and felt remorseful. It's important to remember that our actions, even when driven by emotions, can have an effect on those around us. So, be mindful of how your emotions may come across to others and make an effort to apologize and make amends when necessary.

    • Unexpected encounters with used item sellersBuy used items from reputable sources to avoid awkward situations and unexpected discoveries

Purchasing used items from the Facebook Marketplace can sometimes lead to unexpected and awkward situations. A listener shared his experience of buying wood from a seller named John, who answered the door in a skimpy dressing gown and revealed a hidden vibrating butt plug while bending over to pick up the remaining wood. The listener was mortified and quickly left the scene, vowing to stick to buying new items from reputable stores in the future. This incident serves as a reminder to be cautious when dealing with second-hand sellers and to be prepared for the unexpected.

    • Unique Preferences and Sex ToysRespect individual choices and preferences, even if they seem unusual or embarrassing to others.

People have unique preferences and fetishes, which may seem unusual to others. The discussion revolved around the topic of sex toys, specifically a man using a vibrating butt plug during a wood collection interaction. While some found it disturbing, others saw it as a personal choice. Another topic touched upon was the unexpected discovery of a Lovehoney marketing email leading to the use of a love egg during a public event. Despite the embarrassment and discomfort, some found humor in the situation. Ultimately, it's essential to respect individual choices and preferences, even if they may not align with our own.

    • An unconventional solution for pet harmonyPeople will go to great lengths to ensure their pets live harmoniously, even if it means returning an unwanted companion in an unconventional way

An unexpected turn of events led to an unconventional solution when a pet guinea pig proved to be an unwelcome companion for a rabbit. This story, shared by a friend during a comedy performance, involved the family returning the guinea pig to the pet store by hiding it in a pocket and sneaking it back. Despite the unusual circumstances, the mother-in-law's actions were driven by concern for the well-being of her other pets. This anecdote highlights the lengths people go to ensure their pets live harmoniously and the unconventional methods some may employ when faced with unexpected challenges.

    • People's lengths to save or return thingsPeople will break rules, feel embarrassed, but ensure animals have good homes and take responsibility for mistakes.

People go to great lengths to save or return things, even if it means breaking rules or feeling embarrassed. This was evident in the story where a woman smuggled a guinea pig back into a pet store after realizing she couldn't take care of it, and another woman's attempt to retrieve her phone from a toilet. These actions, though unconventional, demonstrate the importance of giving animals a good home and taking responsibility for one's mistakes. Additionally, the conversation revealed the nuances of language and the way we label animals, with the debate over whether guinea pigs are truly "pigs" or not. Overall, the conversation showcases the lengths people will go to for the things they care about and the importance of communication and honesty.

    • The importance of honesty and communication in relationshipsPeople may hide the truth to avoid confrontation, but honesty is crucial for healthy relationships and addressing issues directly can prevent bigger problems

People sometimes do strange things without admitting it, and in some cases, they may even go to great lengths to hide the truth. In the discussed story, a man believed his partner's phone had been damaged by rainwater and proceeded to suck out the water from the headphone port. The partner allowed him to do this, not revealing the truth. However, the truth was that the phone had been dropped in a toilet and contained urine and feces. The man continued to believe he was fixing the phone, and the partner remained silent. This situation highlights the importance of communication and honesty in relationships, as well as the potential consequences of not addressing issues directly. It also raises questions about the lengths people will go to hide the truth and the potential harm that can come from not addressing problems head-on. Toast - Olestra

    Toast - Olestra

While Sliced Bread takes a break we serve up… Toast. A study of the spectacular failures of wonder products and businesses which had promised so much to consumers. In each episode the presenter and BBC business journalist, Sean Farrington, examines one big idea. What did it promise? Why did people back it? Why did they get burnt? Some of the world’s most successful businesses have also brought us some of the world’s most remarkable failures. So, what led them to be toast? And what can we learn from their stories today? Sean unpicks all the early optimism, hype and ambition. He speaks to expert commentators and to people involved with doomed wonder products to discover how they view things now and what, if anything, could have been done differently.

Along the way he discovers charming and surprising stories from people who took to these products but lived to regret it and, with the help of self-made millionaire and serial entrepreneur Sam White, tries to work out where they went wrong. This week, Sean and Sam look into a fat substitute called Olestra which promised to make savoury snacks healthier.

With none of the fat and far fewer calories, Olestra sounded like a dieter's dream..... but it didn't turn out that way.

Toast is a spin-off from Sliced Bread, the series in which Greg Foot investigates the latest so-called wonder products to find out whether they really are the best thing since sliced bread. Sliced Bread returns for a new batch of investigations in May. In the meantime, Toast is available in the Sliced Bread feed on BBC Sounds. Toast is a BBC Audio North production for BBC Radio 4.
