    Podcast Summary

    • Using a Continuous Glucose Monitor for Two WeeksDoctor Tina Moore found using a continuous glucose monitor from Nutrisense IO for two weeks to be effective and convenient, with valuable insights into her body's glucose response and helpful customer service, app, and nutritional support.

Continuous glucose monitors are non-invasive devices that provide real-time information about glucose levels in the body. They involve applying a small sensor on the skin, which is held in place with an adhesive tape. The device is easy to use and can be worn during daily activities, including exercise and showering. The user scans the device with a smartphone app to access the glucose readings. During her personal experiment, Doctor Tina Moore used a continuous glucose monitor from Nutrisense IO for two weeks and found it to be effective and convenient. She appreciated the company's customer service, app, and the availability of nutritional therapists and dietitians for support. Doctor Tina shared that her previous experience with a continuous glucose monitor was during the pandemic, when she was consuming alcohol regularly, which affected her metabolism and sleep. She noted that the impact of alcohol on blood sugar levels became more noticeable as she aged. Additionally, Doctor Tina highlighted her long-term experience in monitoring her blood sugars and the correlation between stress and increased glucose levels. Overall, the continuous glucose monitor provided valuable insights into her body's glucose response and helped her make informed decisions about her health.

    • Understanding family history and personal experiences with metabolic conditions can motivate individuals to prioritize their healthPersonal experiences and family history can inspire healthy lifestyle choices, such as strength training and a low-carb diet, to manage metabolic conditions and reduce health risks.

Being aware of family history and personal experiences with metabolic conditions, such as diabetes and obesity, can motivate individuals to prioritize their health through lifestyle choices, such as strength training and a low-carb diet. This approach can help manage blood sugar levels and reduce the risk of health complications in the long term. The optimal level of carb restriction varies from person to person, and it's essential to work with a trusted professional to determine the best approach. Additionally, individuals who struggle with carb cravings and have noticed negative effects on their gut biome after indulging in refined carbs may benefit from avoiding them altogether or limiting their consumption. Ultimately, making informed decisions based on personal experiences and knowledge can lead to better health outcomes.

    • Marketing Tactics Mislead Consumers About Healthy FoodsFocus on whole, nutrient-dense foods and limit processed alternatives, despite marketing tactics promoting seemingly healthier options.

Replacing unhealthy, processed foods with seemingly healthier alternatives, such as organic or gluten-free versions, is not the answer to good nutrition. The speaker emphasizes that high-density, nutrient-dense foods like red meat, whole fruits, and high-fat Greek yogurt are essential for sustenance. However, many people struggle to find these foods due to the prevalence of low-nutrient options in stores. The speaker criticizes the marketing tactics of stores like Trader Joe's, which can make unhealthy snack foods appear healthy. The speaker also warns against the dangers of gluten-free and refined carbohydrates, which can be just as detrimental to health as their gluten-containing counterparts. To truly improve one's diet, the speaker suggests focusing on whole, nutrient-dense foods and limiting processed alternatives, even if they are marketed as healthier options.

    • Monitoring blood sugar levels with NutrisenseUsing a continuous glucose monitor from Nutrisense can offer personalized guidance from experts, revealing how different foods impact your metabolism and helping maintain optimal blood sugar levels.

Using a continuous glucose monitor like the one from Nutrisense can provide valuable insights into how different foods affect your blood sugar levels and overall metabolism. The speaker, who is well-educated and has tried various biohacking gadgets, highly recommends this monitor due to its helpful human interaction aspect and the expertise of the dietitians and nutritional therapists available on the platform. These professionals offer personalized guidance, making the experience even more beneficial. The speaker also emphasizes the importance of avoiding prolonged and frequent peaks in blood sugar levels, as they can negatively impact metabolism. Instead, aim for quick, short ups and downs, allowing for an appropriate insulin response and maintaining optimal blood sugar levels.

    • Food type affects blood sugar responseRefined carbs cause large spikes, whole food refined carbs with beef minimal impact, beef beneficial, protein type matters, even low-quality beef better than processed foods

The type and source of food significantly impacted the speaker's blood sugar response. Refined carbohydrates, such as pizza and macaroni and cheese, caused large and prolonged spikes, leading to multiple peaks and insulin sputtering. On the other hand, whole food refined carbs like mashed potatoes or potato chips, when consumed with beef, resulted in minimal impact on blood sugar levels. Beef, specifically, was found to be beneficial for the speaker's blood sugar handling. The type of protein also mattered, with shrimp and chicken causing larger spikes compared to beef. The speaker concluded that even low-quality ground beef is a better choice than most processed foods for managing blood sugar levels.

    • Optimal protein choices and sleep quality for healthEating steak and other types of beef promotes stable blood sugar and supports digestion. Quality sleep significantly impacts energy, mental clarity, and mood.

The type of protein we consume and maintaining good sleep are crucial factors in promoting optimal health and well-being for this individual. They found that steak and other types of beef were the best protein choices due to their ability to keep blood sugar stable and support digestion. Additionally, the importance of quality sleep cannot be overstated, as it significantly impacts various aspects of health, including energy levels, mental clarity, and overall mood. The speaker emphasized the significance of addressing sleep issues and seeking professional help if necessary.

    • Impact of stress and disrupted sleep on blood sugar levelsStress and poor sleep quality can lead to increased blood sugar levels and overall health issues. Prioritize stress management and sleep hygiene for optimal health.

Stress and disrupted sleep significantly impact an individual's blood sugar levels and overall health. The speaker shared personal experiences of how stressors like traveling, running late, and intense dreams led to increased blood sugar levels. Additionally, lack of proper nutrition before bedtime can result in poor sleep quality and subsequent blood sugar instability. The use of technology, such as continuous glucose monitors and Oura rings, can help identify these patterns and provide insights into the body's response to stress. Given the current high levels of stress and uncertainty in society, it's crucial to prioritize stress management and sleep hygiene to maintain optimal health.

    • Impact of stressors and diet on blood sugar managementStressors, both personal and global, and unhealthy dietary choices are contributing to poor blood sugar management for many Americans, affecting their overall health, particularly those in highly vaccinated and politically tense areas.

The combination of ongoing stressors, both personal and global, and unhealthy dietary choices are contributing to poor blood sugar management for many Americans. The speaker expresses concern about the impact of these factors on individuals' health, particularly those who are highly vaccinated and living in areas with high political tension. He shares his own experience of observing elevated blood sugar levels in himself and others, even when making what he considers to be healthy food choices. The speaker also plans to explore this topic further in upcoming episodes of the podcast, focusing on metabolism and blood sugar handling. In essence, the discussion highlights the importance of addressing both mental and physical health to maintain optimal blood sugar levels.

    • Invest in a continuous glucose monitor during the holiday seasonMonitoring blood sugar levels with a tool like the Nutrisense monitor is beneficial during the holiday season when sugar consumption is common.

With the holiday season approaching and sugar becoming increasingly prevalent in stores, now is an excellent time to invest in a continuous glucose monitor like the Nutrisense monitor, which the speaker highly recommends. The speaker, who considers this her favorite biohacking tool, believes that the benefits of monitoring blood sugar levels are especially valuable during this time of year when sugar consumption is so common. She encourages listeners to click the link in her bio to check it out and save $30 in the process. The speaker emphasizes that this podcast is for general informational purposes only and does not constitute medical advice.

Episode 5: Does Eating Fat Make You Fat? with Jon Peterson

Episode 5: Does Eating Fat Make You Fat? with Jon Peterson

Back in the 1970s, the government recommended we eat a low-fat, high-carb diet, which led to a spike in heart disease and an increase in obesity in America.

In this episode, Alyson and Dr. Jon discuss the popular misconception that eating fat makes you fat. They both share their experiences of weight loss and weight gain and why listening to our bodies is the key to being healthy.

They also touch on the benefits of the keto diet, the Mediterranean diet, intermittent fasting, and the role of carbohydrates in our diet. What we eat and when we eat affects our cholesterol, brain function, energy levels, and so much more.

Episode 7: Why Do I Keep Overeating?

Episode 7: Why Do I Keep Overeating?

Have you ever wondered why you keep overeating? Or maybe why did you eat something that wasn’t originally on your plan for eating that day? You’re not alone.

In this episode, I am sharing an excerpt from our Fat To Fuel program, where I explain what I call “buffers” and how we use them to alleviate some of the internal pain we feel.

Our primitive brain does three things for us: seek pleasure, avoid pain, and save energy. These three things have kept us safe for generations. But what about that little boost of dopamine that we get when we do things like overeating, avoiding something, or spending money? Is that short-term boost really worth it?

If you enjoyed this episode, join us in our Fat To Fuel program. We show you how to give up those buffers and deal with pain in a healthier way, a way that aligns more with your goals and beliefs.
