    enMarch 24, 2022

    Podcast Summary

    • Navigating the Challenges of an ADHD Diagnosis in AdulthoodDespite common misconceptions, ADHD affects adults and seeking a diagnosis can be a long journey. Keep pushing for answers and don't accept dismissive responses from healthcare professionals. Resources like the ADHD Adult UK podcast, their website, and Focusmag.uk can provide support.

Seeking a diagnosis for ADHD can be a long and challenging process. Mickey Beans O'Brien shared her personal experience of going through multiple doctors and being dismissed due to misconceptions about ADHD. She finally received a diagnosis in 2012 after years of struggling in relationships and feeling something was off. It's essential to keep pushing for answers and not accept dismissive responses from healthcare professionals. ADHD is not limited to children, and adults can and do live with it. For resources and support, listeners can check out the ADHD Adult UK podcast, their website, and Focusmag.uk, the world's only online magazine specifically for ADHD adults.

    • Journey to Diagnosis and Treatment of Adult ADHDTimely and appropriate support for Adult ADHD is crucial for managing symptoms and preventing worsening conditions. Delayed diagnosis and treatment can lead to negative influences and financial strain.

Navigating the process of getting a proper diagnosis and treatment for Adult ADHD can be a long and challenging journey. The speaker in this discussion shared their personal experience of receiving a diagnosis in 2017 but facing significant delays in receiving necessary medication and support. During this time, they were surrounded by negative influences and struggled to cope with their symptoms, leading to a worsening of their condition. Despite wanting to seek private help, they were unable to due to personal circumstances and the financial strain caused by supporting a family member. The experience highlights the importance of timely and appropriate support for individuals with ADHD, and the potential consequences of delayed diagnosis and treatment.

    • Speaker's journey to access ADHD services through advocacyHonesty and persistence in advocating for oneself can lead to significant progress in accessing necessary healthcare services, especially for individuals with ADHD.

Being honest and persistent in advocating for oneself can lead to significant progress, especially when it comes to accessing necessary healthcare services. The speaker shared their experience of reaching out to their MP, Emily Thornberry, after being told there were no adult ADHD services in their area. They also contacted the heads of ADHD services in England and the world for support. When Thornberry responded, the speaker was overjoyed and attended their first ADHD assessment at St. Pancras on January 27, 2020. The speaker emphasized the importance of being straightforward and authentic in communication with healthcare professionals and political representatives. They also highlighted the frustration of being diagnosed with something other than ADHD and the importance of continuing to advocate for oneself despite setbacks. The speaker's story underscores the importance of perseverance and honesty in navigating the healthcare system and securing the necessary support for individuals with ADHD.

    • Finding support and understanding for adult ADHDProper diagnosis and holistic treatment, including emotional support, can lead to significant improvements for adults with ADHD

Receiving a proper diagnosis and supportive treatment for adult ADHD can lead to significant improvements in one's life. As shared by Mickey O'Beans, the moment of diagnosis at St. Pancras Hospital was a turning point. Rather than being left to emotionally deal with the condition on their own, Mickey found a supportive friend and mentor in their therapist. This holistic approach, which included medical validation and emotional support, allowed Mickey to feel understood and accepted. As a result, they are now in the best place they've ever been in their life. It's important to remember that not everyone with adult ADHD receives this level of support. Many are left with just a label and medication, which can leave them feeling misunderstood and alone. Hearing stories of people who receive comprehensive care and understanding is both rewarding and inspiring.

    • Acceptance and Support for ADHD Improves Quality of LifeEducating society about ADHD from the perspective of those living with it can lead to a more inclusive and supportive environment, improving quality of life for individuals with ADHD.

Finding the right environment and support system can lead to significant improvement in the quality of life for individuals with ADHD, even if they've faced challenges and disappointments in the past. The speaker shares how her experiences since her mother's illness have been the best in her life due to the peace and calmness she's found, as well as the support of good friends and family. She's come to accept her ADHD and is focused on managing it, but struggles with letting go of past hurt and disappointment from people she thought cared about her. If society could make one change to better support adults with ADHD, the speaker encourages everyone to educate themselves about the condition through the perspectives of those who live with it. By understanding ADHD from the inside out, we can create a more inclusive and supportive environment for those affected by it.

    • Learn and Understand ADHD for a More Inclusive WorldEducating ourselves about ADHD reduces bullying, fosters understanding, and supports individuals with ADHD to thrive. Set aside time to learn and engage with resources.

Understanding and education are key to supporting individuals with ADHD and creating a more inclusive environment. Misunderstandings and preconceptions can lead to bullying and exclusion, and even well-meaning individuals may unintentionally contribute to these issues due to lack of knowledge. By reading up on the condition, engaging with resources like memes and quick-fire information, and fostering genuine understanding among friends and colleagues, we can help create a more supportive and inclusive world for those with ADHD. This not only benefits individuals with ADHD but also reduces the fear and anxiety they may experience when interacting with others. Education is essential for everyone, from teachers and employers to healthcare professionals, to effectively support individuals with ADHD and help them thrive. While the process of gaining this understanding may seem daunting, it can be as simple as setting aside 10 minutes to learn and engage with resources. Additionally, individuals with ADHD often benefit greatly from the support and understanding of those around them, reducing the fear of letting others down or being judged.

    • Sharing experiences and creating content, regardless of ageMickey O'Brien emphasized the importance of sharing personal experiences and creating content, highlighting how his lived experiences have influenced his work. He encouraged listeners to engage with ADHD.uk to discuss adult ADHD or related topics.

Mickey O'Brien, a guest on the ADHD adult UK podcast, emphasized the importance of sharing personal experiences and creating content despite aging. He highlighted that his lived experiences have significantly influenced his work and encouraged listeners to engage with ADHD.uk, regardless of diagnosis or symptoms, to discuss adult ADHD or related topics. The conversation touched on various humorous anecdotes, including a cat shitting in a toilet and unrealized desires for impersonating accents. While some anticipated the inclusion of a Russian hamster and Elizabeth Taylor impressions, these elements did not materialize. Overall, the episode underscored the value of sharing experiences and connecting with others over common challenges.

The Mental Offload with Shawna Samuel

The Mental Offload with Shawna Samuel

Ever feel like you're constantly bombarded by societal expectations and pressures, especially as a woman? Well, you're not alone.

I recently had an eye-opening chat with Shawna Samuel, the founder of Mental Offload, and we dove into this hot topic, exploring how imperative it is to subtract these pressures to reclaim our time and energy. Shawna's insights on shedding the perennial need to please others, to make space for self-care and personal growth, are just the wake-up call we all need.

Navigating the labyrinth of household chores and responsibilities often brings its own set of challenges. The talk with Shawna brought to light the concept of weaponized incompetence, and how it's often entwined with maternal gatekeeping. These patterns can strain relationships, but more importantly, they can impact our ability to trust and allow space for our partners to learn. We dug into how we can shift these dynamics and embrace a more balanced, equitable approach at home.

Finally, we took a hard look at the mental load that women, particularly women of color, carry. This emotional and mental burden is often underappreciated, yet it can steal precious time from self-improvement and skill-building. Shawna shared practical advice on how to offload this mental load, making decisions about travel, childcare, and self-care that put you first.

Listen in and discover how to challenge societal norms, advocate for your personal space, and set the path for a life that's balanced and fulfilling.
