Fighting in Avdiikva is 'hell', says Ukraine military & how Kyiv is trying to fix its manpower problem

    enFebruary 15, 2024

    Podcast Summary

    • Constant necessities amidst changing worldDespite ongoing conflicts and technological advancements, human needs for health insurance and significant life events remain constant. Ukraine and Russia continue their tensions, with both sides engaging in military actions and causing damage. The Ukrainian people and their leaders remain resilient in their fight for sovereignty.

Despite the passing of time and the ever-evolving world around us, certain necessities remain constant. While technology may bring us new companions like chatbots, our need for health insurance and important life milestones like engagement ring purchases remain unchanged. In the news, tensions between Ukraine and Russia continue, with both sides engaging in military actions. An oil depot in Russia was reportedly hit by a Ukrainian drone strike, causing a fire and no reported casualties. Russia claimed another missile strike in Belgorod killed 5 people. Ukraine has used drone strikes against Russian energy infrastructure in recent months. Last night, Russia launched a series of missile strikes across Ukraine, causing injuries and damage to buildings in various regions. In Avdiivka, the situation is critical for Ukrainian forces, with the only evacuation route reportedly shot by the Russians. The US has reportedly shared intelligence suggesting Russia may be developing a new military capability in space, although specifics have not been disclosed. Amidst these ongoing conflicts and uncertainties, the Ukrainian people and their leaders remain resilient, with President Zelensky urging the international community for support in their fight for sovereignty.

    • Russian military capabilities in space pose unclear threat to global securityExperts warn of serious threat to global security from Russian military actions in space. The nature of the threat is unclear, but governments are assessing ways to contain it. Russia denies allegations, and some see this as an attempt to secure more funding for Ukraine.

There are reports suggesting a potential threat to global security involving Russian military capabilities in space. The nature of this threat is not clear, but it has been described as serious by US and Australian experts. The US government and the House Intelligence Committee have acknowledged the existence of this intelligence, and authorities are assessing ways to contain the situation. Russia has denied the allegations, and some believe this is an attempt by the US to secure more funding for Ukraine. The UK has announced additional military aid to Ukraine as part of an international effort to support the country. The situation remains uncertain, but it underscores the importance of international arms control treaties and the need for continued vigilance against potential threats to global security.

    • UK invests £200M+ in Ukrainian drone techWestern countries invest large sums in Ukrainian drone technology, aiming to establish a drone school and test range, but details and number of drones are unclear.

The UK and its allies are investing significantly in drone technology for Ukraine, estimated to be over £200,000,000, as part of their ongoing conflict with Russia. This investment includes the development of first person view drones and the establishment of a drone school and test range for Ukrainian operators. However, the exact breakdown of the investment and the number of drones it will provide is unclear. The timing of this announcement, coming as the US tries to pass a military aid package for Ukraine, has raised eyebrows due to the potential use of nuclear weapons in the conflict. The fear of nuclear escalation may push countries like Iran to accelerate their research on acquiring such weapons. Despite the potential dangers, Western countries are unlikely to use nuclear weapons offensively. The US House of Representatives' military aid bill for Ukraine is currently in limbo due to Speaker Kevin McCarthy's request for a one-on-one meeting with President Biden before taking any action.

    • Urging US Support for Ukraine Amid Russia TensionsInternational community urges US aid for Ukraine against Russia, with Britain leading the charge. Zelensky tours Europe to secure backing. Putin prefers Biden for predictability, while Ukraine creates new military-industrial system.

The international community, led by Britain, is urging the US to provide financial and military support for Ukraine amid growing tensions with Russia. Lord Cameron has written an article warning against repeating the mistakes of the 1930s by blocking aid, while Zelensky is touring Europe to secure backing. Russia's Putin has weighed in on the US presidential race, stating that Biden would be better for Russia due to his predictability. In response, Ukraine is creating a new system linking the army and industry to better meet the needs of the frontline. Despite progress, the question of whether European nations will meet their defense spending targets remains uncertain. The stakes are high, as Russia's actions continue to escalate.

    • Building Defense Capabilities: A Complex ProcessEffective defense capabilities require careful coordination between military, industry, and government. Manage expectations, involve military users, and ensure contracts meet requirements to avoid corruption and ensure military needs are met.

Building a defense capability is a complex process requiring careful coordination between military needs, industry, and government. President Zelensky of Ukraine emphasized the importance of rapid response to threats, but acquiring effective defense equipment is not as simple as a soldier asking for a bigger gun. The process involves civilian contractors, requirement managers, open competition, and military involvement at every stage to ensure that the military's needs are met. However, this process can be lengthy and prone to miscommunication, cost overruns, and requirements creep. The key is to manage expectations and ensure that military users have the final say in the process to avoid potential corruption and ensure that the equipment meets the military's needs. The UK's Defense Equipment and Support (DES) is an example of how this process can be managed effectively, with military involvement throughout to ensure that contracts meet the military's requirements. Overall, the process of acquiring defense equipment is complex, but with careful coordination and management, it can result in effective and efficient solutions to meet the military's needs.

    • Ukraine's Military Conscription and Anti-Corruption EffortsUkraine's government aims to increase military reserves through conscription, linking the army with industry as part of an anti-corruption campaign. Controversial draft bill considers up to 500,000 new soldiers, with longer training and higher salaries but strict penalties for evasion.

The military situation in Ukraine is complex and constantly evolving, with the government looking to increase military reserves through conscription while dealing with corruption and public approval. President Zelensky has announced plans to link the army with industry as part of his anti-corruption campaign, but implementing such a system will be challenging. The parliament is currently considering a bill to draft up to 500,000 new soldiers, with a lower minimum age and longer training periods. Salaries are considered well-paid compared to the average in Ukraine, and those who serve for 36 months will be granted a 2-year immunity from conscription. However, harsh penalties for evasion have sparked controversy, with some arguing it's against human rights. The topic is divisive, and the government's approval ratings are suffering, but mass conscription is seen as necessary due to ongoing conflicts with Russian forces.

    • Ukraine's struggle to maintain military ranksUkraine faces a £10bn cost to conscript half a million men, but societal reaction is mixed, highlighting the human toll of the conflict

The Ukrainian military is facing a significant challenge in maintaining its forces due to the ongoing conflict with Russia. With understaffed front lines and soldiers in need of rest, conscription has become a necessary measure. However, convincing Ukrainian citizens to enlist is a complex issue. While some may feel a sense of duty, others are hesitant, especially as the war drags on and the prospect of defeat becomes more daunting. Additionally, the cost of conscription is a major concern for the Ukrainian government, which faces a steep price tag of £10 billion to conscript half a million people. The societal reaction to conscription is mixed, with some men willing to serve but others hoping to avoid it. Overall, the Ukrainian military's struggle to maintain its ranks highlights the human toll of the conflict and the challenges of mobilizing a population for a prolonged war.

    • Ukraine's military recruitment strategy and international complicationsThousands flee Ukraine due to draft, military allows role choice to reduce fear, summonses sent online with harsh sanctions, Hungary blocks EU sanctions against Russia, Lord Cameron emphasizes China and Iran involvement, Erdogan offers mediation

The situation in Ukraine regarding the draft and enlistment is causing significant unrest among the population, with thousands attempting to flee the country. The Ukrainian military is trying to address this by implementing a recruitment strategy, allowing men to choose their roles in the army and potentially reducing fear. However, the summonses are now being sent online, and those who do not respond will face harsh sanctions. Meanwhile, Hungary has blocked an EU sanctions package against Russia, complicating efforts to assist Ukraine's war effort. Additionally, Lord Cameron has emphasized the importance of addressing China and Iran's involvement in the conflict. Turkey's President Erdogan has also expressed his willingness to mediate between Russia and Ukraine. These developments underscore the complex and rapidly evolving nature of the conflict.

    • International efforts to resolve Ukraine-Russia conflict peacefullyNATO boosts defense spending and holds large-scale exercises, but progress towards 2% GDP defense goal is slow, and resources are allocated to support Ukraine amidst tensions. Military exercises don't reach Cold War levels of intensity.

International efforts continue to focus on resolving the conflict between Russia and Ukraine through peaceful means, with ongoing discussions between world leaders. NATO is increasing its defense spending and holding large-scale exercises to strengthen its military capabilities. However, progress towards the 2% GDP defense spending goal for NATO members has been slow, and significant resources and contracts are being allocated to support Ukraine amidst ongoing tensions. Despite these efforts, the scale and intensity of current military exercises fall short of the high-end state-on-state conflicts seen during the Cold War.

    • Assessing the Impact of Discussions on Ukraine's Defense and US' RoleThe success of Ukraine's defense heavily depends on effective negotiations and support from allies, particularly the US. Insights from Ambassador Bill Taylor and Orisy Lutsevich's podcast episode may provide valuable information on the current situation and US' role.

While discussions and meetings among key figures regarding Ukraine's defense and the US' role in it are promising, it's essential to scrutinize the outcomes and put them in context to assess their true impact. The Ukrainian military's effectiveness heavily depends on the support from their allies, particularly the US, and the successful negotiation and implementation of aid packages. The upcoming live podcast episode featuring Ambassador Bill Taylor and Orisy Lutsevich is expected to provide valuable insights into the current situation and the US' role in it. Additionally, Ukraine's military success relies not only on manpower but also on the availability of adequate resources. Svetlana Moronets emphasized the importance of allies' support and effective negotiations within the Ukrainian government to ensure the soldiers have the necessary equipment to fight effectively.

February 10th, 2023. Biden Blames His Staff For The Classified Documents Found in His Homes
It’s February 10th. You’re listening to the President’s Daily Brief. Your morning intel starts now. ------ A good day to you, ladies and gentlemen. I’ve got four briefs for you this morning that are shaping America — and the world. First, Joe Biden says it’s not his fault that he had classified material at his home and office. No no. I’ll tell you though who is. Second, an update to the China Balloon Saga this morning, with an assessment by a Democrat Senator from Montana that is spot on. Third, some updates on the War in Ukraine, with mostly bad news for Kiev. Finally, American taxpayers will be funding a new wind farm. But this one it’s not in America. It’s in Mexico. Later, we close out the podcast with an observation I had on a recent report about Afghanistan and it says that the Taliban won’t be bought off by Western money. Apparently that came as a shock to some folks in DC. Which only proves that The Smart People aren’t very smart at all.  ----- Please remember to subscribe if you enjoyed this episode of the President's Daily Brief.
