    • Impact of Pandemic on Healthcare Workers' Mental and Physical HealthThe pandemic has caused significant stress and burnout among healthcare workers, leading to anxiety, vomiting, and feelings of ineffectiveness. Support systems and resources are crucial to ensure they can continue providing essential care to patients.

The pandemic has significantly impacted the mental and physical health of healthcare workers, like Danielle, who once found joy and purpose in their roles. Danielle, a nurse who was proud of her work and went above and beyond to care for her patients, now experiences severe anxiety and vomiting before her shifts due to the overwhelming stress of the pandemic. This once essential and fulfilling work has become a source of distress for her, highlighting the importance of addressing the mental and physical well-being of healthcare workers during crises. The practical willingness to wipe a butt and provide care that Danielle once had has been replaced by feelings of ineffectiveness and burnout. The discussion underscores the need for support systems and resources for healthcare workers during challenging times to ensure they can continue to provide essential care to their patients.

    • Nurses find support and connection on Reddit during the pandemicDuring the pandemic, the r/nursing subreddit has provided a crucial online support system for nurses, offering solace, understanding, and a sense of community as they navigate the challenges of their profession.

The nursing community on Reddit, specifically the r/nursing subreddit, has served as a crucial support system for nurses during the COVID-19 pandemic. Nurses, like Danielle, Cee, and Scott, have turned to this online community to find solace, connection, and understanding as they navigate the challenges of their profession during this difficult time. With over a million healthcare workers having left their jobs in the US and up to 47% of the remaining workforce planning to leave in the next few years, the nursing shortage is a pressing issue. The pandemic has put immense strain on the healthcare system, leading to thousands of vacancies and hospitals hiring students before they even graduate. The nursing subreddit provides a space for nurses to share their experiences, find comfort in knowing they're not alone, and build a sense of community during these trying times. This online support system has become even more essential as the healthcare system continues to reel from the effects of COVID-19.

    • Nursing community transformed during pandemicDuring COVID-19, r/nursing evolved from a platform for clinical advice to a space for emotional support and connection among nurses.

The r/nursing community, which started as a platform for sharing clinical advice and career tips, transformed significantly during the COVID-19 pandemic. The community, which grew rapidly during this time, became a space for nurses to share their experiences, struggles, and emotions. The tone of the posts shifted from routine clinical questions and career wisdom to desperation and personal stories. The most popular post on the subreddit, titled "He Died in the Goddamn Waiting Room," encapsulates the attitude of pandemic nursing, expressing the collective struggle and frustration of nurses in providing care despite being overwhelmed. The community, which diversified during this time, provided a space for nurses from different specialties and locations to connect and support each other. Despite the challenges, the community became a vital source of connection and solidarity for nurses during a time of crisis.

    • Nurse's experiences during COVID-19 pandemicThe pandemic highlighted the importance of clear policies, effective communication, and adequate resources for the wellbeing of both patients and healthcare workers.

The COVID-19 pandemic placed unprecedented stress on the healthcare system and its workers, leading to challenging working conditions and difficult decisions. The speaker, Danielle, shared her experiences as a nurse during the early stages of the pandemic, describing the fear and uncertainty as hospitals struggled to adapt to the new situation. Policies and protocols were constantly changing, and nurses were often left feeling overwhelmed and under-resourced. One particularly challenging aspect was the implementation of isolation protocols and the use of PPE, which caused anxiety and uncertainty for many nurses. Additionally, the opening of new floors and the influx of patients led to increased workloads and ratios, making it difficult for nurses to provide adequate care to their patients. Ultimately, the pandemic highlighted the importance of effective communication, clear policies, and adequate resources in ensuring the wellbeing of both patients and healthcare workers.

    • Impact of COVID-19 on Nurses: A Personal ExperienceThe COVID-19 pandemic has led to increased patient risk and nurse burnout due to staff shortages, communication breakdowns, and the complexity of the 'great resignation' of nurses. Improved communication, support, and resources are needed to ensure the well-being of both patients and staff.

The COVID-19 pandemic and its aftermath have led to significant challenges for healthcare workers, particularly nurses. Danielle's experience highlights the impact of these challenges on both the healthcare system and individual nurses. The ongoing pandemic, coupled with staff shortages and communication breakdowns between hospital executives and staff, led to increased patient risk and burnout for Danielle and her colleagues. A small oversight, such as failing to properly monitor a patient's temperature, could have severe consequences. Danielle's experience also underscores the complexity of the "great resignation" of nurses, which goes beyond burnout. The financial trappings of self-care and the motivations behind our spending choices are also important topics to consider in understanding the broader context of this issue. Ultimately, the pandemic has exposed the need for improved communication, support, and resources for healthcare workers to ensure the well-being of both patients and staff.

    • Nurses advocated for safe patient-to-nurse ratios and higher pay during the National Nurses March in DCNurses are leaving due to mental stress, supply issues, increased workload, and lower pay compared to other healthcare staff. Hospitals setting patient limits and raising nurse salaries are potential solutions, but the latter addresses the root cause and attracts/retains nurses.

The nursing workforce is facing unprecedented challenges due to unsafe patient-to-nurse ratios and inadequate compensation. The National Nurses March in DC highlighted these issues, with nurses advocating for safe ratios and higher pay. Two potential solutions were discussed: hospitals setting patient limits and raising nurse salaries. While the former may alleviate the issue temporarily, it could negatively impact patients. The latter, however, addresses the root cause by attracting and retaining nurses. The median hourly wage for nurses in the US is $35, which is low considering the demanding nature, costly training, and years of education required. Nurses, who are predominantly women, are leaving due to mental stress, supply issues, increased workload, and lower pay compared to doctors and other healthcare staff. Scott, a nurse who shared his experience, was offered a management position at a higher hourly wage but turned it down due to the lower pay compared to his current role as a staff nurse. The COVID-19 pandemic has further exacerbated these issues, with many nurses making significantly more due to pandemic pay.

    • Travel Nursing: A Lucrative and Flexible Career Option During PandemicTravel nursing offers flexibility and high wages during pandemic, causing tension with permanent staff due to wage disparities.

Travel nursing has become an increasingly lucrative and flexible career option, especially during times of high demand for healthcare workers. Traditionally, travel nurses would live away from home for 13 weeks to fill staffing gaps, but during the pandemic, hospitals have offered double or even triple wages to attract travel nurses. This has led to a significant increase in the number of travel nurses, with ads for these positions appearing everywhere. Travel nurses enjoy the flexibility to choose their schedules and locations, and many earn substantial salaries. However, this can create friction with staff nurses who have been working at a hospital for years and are now making less money for the same job. Despite this, travel nurses argue that it's the system that's at fault, and they are simply taking advantage of the opportunities available to them.

    • Nursing Shortage: Protest, Strikes, and Price GougingThe nursing shortage is causing hospitals to pay high prices for travel nurses through agencies, leading to accusations of price gouging. Nurses are demanding pay raises, while hospitals push for pay caps. The travel nursing industry is thriving, but it could take years for the healthcare industry to stabilize.

The healthcare industry is facing a significant nursing shortage due to a combination of factors including burnout, low wages, and better opportunities for travel nurses. Hospitals are paying exorbitant prices for travel nurses through agencies, leading to accusations of price gouging. Nurses are demanding pay raises, while hospitals are pushing for pay caps. The travel nursing industry is benefiting from this situation. Nurses are protesting and striking for better wages and working conditions, with some reaching tentative agreements. However, it could take years for the healthcare industry to stabilize, as many nurses have left the profession permanently. The pandemic has also highlighted the need for more diversity and inclusion in nursing unions. Danielle, a nurse who returned to work after being a travel nurse, accepts the changes in the industry and her role in it, focusing on doing her best in her current situation.

    • Finding Support in Online CommunitiesOnline communities can offer comfort and connection during challenging times, providing a space for individuals to share experiences and find support.

The internet can provide a sense of community and connection, even during challenging times. As heard in the discussion on Endless Thread, a podcast by WBUR in Boston, a listener shared her experience of dealing with anxiety and vomiting, which improved after finding support online. While she still experiences some anxiety and rewards herself with occasional "shower beers," she's grateful for the connections she's made. The podcast also emphasizes the importance of nurses and encourages listeners to reach out with their own untold stories from the internet. Overall, the episode highlights the power of digital communities in helping individuals navigate their personal struggles and providing a space for sharing experiences.

Gen Z wants you to take political action, one TikTok at a time

Gen Z wants you to take political action, one TikTok at a time

Gen Z is over it. The youngest generation of adults is inheriting a climate crisis, the ongoing fallout from a global pandemic, a polarized political landscape, and a tenuous economic reality.  And many Gen Z members, a generation more likely to identify as progressive than conservative, are ready for something to give.

Enter: Gen Z for Change — a youth-led non-profit that brands itself as, "the place where the creator economy and progressive politics intersect on social media." The group leverages a hundreds-deep network of social media creators to spread calls to action over TikTok. They've also pulled on the programming expertise within their team to develop a caché of semi-automatic tools that take the guesswork out of engaging with their political agenda.

Their latest tool, "Ceasefire Now!!" takes these efforts one step further — resulting in, by Gen Z for Change's count, two million emails calling for a ceasefire in Gaza hitting the inboxes of elected representatives in Washington every day.
