    en-usApril 27, 2021

    Podcast Summary

    • Embracing Change for Personal GrowthContent creators can prevent burnout and maintain fulfillment by branching out and trying new creative avenues, leading to personal growth and newfound appreciation for diverse creative possibilities.

Creating content, especially on platforms like YouTube, can come with its own unique pressures and challenges, leading to feelings of imposter syndrome. Ethan, a content creator with a decade of experience under the name Crank Gameplays, recently took a month-long break to reflect on these experiences. During this time, he realized the importance of branching out and trying new creative avenues to maintain fulfillment and avoid burnout. Ethan's most recent project, Unus Annus, involved creating a video every day for a year with a friend, which resulted in a sense of personal growth and a newfound appreciation for the creative possibilities beyond gaming content. This journey demonstrates the importance of recognizing the need for change and embracing personal development in the face of creative challenges.

    • From boredom to passion: Ethan's journey on YouTubeUnderstanding and embracing individual differences can lead to personal growth. Childhood insecurities and lack of understanding towards ADHD can negatively impact self-perception, but seeking attention and exploring various philosophies can help overcome these feelings.

Ethan, a successful YouTuber, shared his journey from boredom to passion, discussing the influence of seeking attention and dealing with ADHD. Ethan began making videos out of boredom in 2012 and found a new wave of entertainment in YouTube. His desire to be the center of attention stemmed from childhood insecurities and the need for validation. However, his experiences with ADHD and the lack of understanding towards it during his school years led him to feel stupid and insecure. He dealt with these feelings throughout his life, despite knowing he was not stupid. Ethan's conversation touched on the importance of understanding and embracing individual differences, as well as the potential for personal growth through various philosophical and spiritual approaches.

    • Understanding Imposter SyndromeImposter syndrome is a feeling of inadequacy despite evidence of intelligence and capability. It can be caused by unfamiliar environments or group settings. Recognizing and addressing it can lead to greater self-awareness, confidence, and personal growth.

Feeling stupid or inadequate despite evidence to the contrary is a common experience, even for intelligent and capable individuals. This phenomenon, known as imposter syndrome, can stem from various factors such as being in unfamiliar environments or feeling overwhelmed in group settings. It's important to recognize that these feelings don't define one's intelligence or worth, and that confidence can be found in acknowledging past struggles and growth. Additionally, being in the correct environment and receiving proper support can help alleviate feelings of inadequacy. It's essential to remember that everyone has unique learning styles and strengths, and it's okay to ask for help or clarification when needed. Overall, understanding and addressing imposter syndrome can lead to greater self-awareness, confidence, and personal growth.

    • Fear and Anxiety Can Hold Us BackUnderstanding and challenging our fears and insecurities can help us contribute in group settings despite feeling like we have nothing to offer.

Our fears and anxieties can be the cause of our perceived inability to contribute in group settings, rather than a lack of value or intelligence. Our minds often trick us into believing that we have nothing to offer, when in reality, it's our insecurities that are holding us back. This is a common experience, especially in the age of social media where comparison and self-judgment can be amplified. To overcome this, it's important to understand the ways in which our minds activate insecurities and how they manifest in our thoughts and behaviors. By recognizing and challenging these patterns, we can begin to open up and share our valuable contributions with others.

    • Understanding and addressing insecurities for personal growthBeing authentic and sharing vulnerabilities can lead to more fulfilling and creatively satisfying content, but fear of judgment can prevent us from doing so. Addressing insecurities is crucial for personal growth.

Fear of judgment and insecurity can prevent us from being authentic and sharing our true selves with the world. This fear can manifest as a program in our minds that takes over our thought process, making us feel inadequate and uncertain. For Ethan, this fear was particularly strong when the conversation veered away from his areas of expertise. This was evident during his sophomore year in high school when his mother demanded that he choose between YouTube and gymnastics, leading to his first panic attack. The fear of losing a significant part of himself was overwhelming, and he didn't know how to cope. However, personal growth requires us to show the world the ugly side of us, including our insecurities and vulnerabilities. By being authentic, we can create more fulfilling and creatively satisfying content. Therefore, understanding and addressing our insecurities is crucial for growth.

    • Embracing new identitiesChoices in life are not just about eliminating, but also about embracing new identities. It's essential to make intentional choices to become the best version of ourselves.

Our choices in life are not just about eliminating one thing, but also about embracing a new identity. The mother in the conversation was not only asking her son to let go of gymnastics or YouTube, but also to choose who he wanted to become. The son shared how he felt like he didn't fit in at school and didn't see himself as a "good student." He was passionate about YouTube and gymnastics and felt validated when his father recognized his hard work. This experience taught him that it's essential to embrace new identities and not be defined solely by what we give up. It's about making intentional choices to become the best version of ourselves.

    • The Power of Validation and RecognitionValidation and recognition from others can significantly impact self-perception, motivation, and overall well-being. It's crucial to create opportunities for validation and extend it to others.

Validation and recognition from others can have a profound impact on our self-perception and motivation. The speaker shared an experience where someone acknowledging their hard work and expressing pride in them was incredibly meaningful. It's essential not to underestimate the significance of such moments, as they can help us feel seen, appreciated, and boost our confidence. Additionally, the discussion touched upon the concept of imposter syndrome and how it might be linked to not feeling validated or recognized for our abilities. It's crucial to recognize that everyone has strengths and weaknesses, and it's normal not to excel in every area. However, when we face challenges or setbacks, the support and recognition of others can make all the difference. Furthermore, the conversation highlighted the idea that sometimes, people may struggle to invest in areas where they don't believe they can succeed. In such cases, it's essential to understand that not caring might be an adaptation to the situation rather than the root cause of the problem. In conclusion, the power of validation and recognition cannot be overstated. It can significantly impact our self-perception, motivation, and overall well-being. It's crucial to create opportunities for ourselves to be seen and appreciated while also recognizing the importance of extending validation and recognition to others.

    • Impact of Parental Decisions on Children's EmotionsParental decisions can cause overwhelming emotions and panic attacks in children, especially when they feel a loss of control or closure of opportunities.

The pressure of making important decisions, especially during childhood, can lead to overwhelming emotions and even panic attacks. In the discussed scenario, the individual, Ethan, experienced this firsthand when his mother asked him to give up gymnastics and focus on academics. Although Ethan's mother had good intentions, the lack of choice and the perceived closure of opportunities led Ethan to have a panic attack. It's essential to remember that parents often act in their children's best interests, but the psychological impact on children can be significant. In Ethan's case, the panic attack triggered a rational thought process, helping him make a calculated decision and eventually calm down. It's crucial to recognize the potential impact of decisions on children and provide them with choices when possible to prevent such emotional responses.

    • The impact of past experiences on emotions and behaviorsPast experiences, especially traumatic ones, can influence emotions and behaviors in the present through unconscious emotional energy, or 'samskar'.

Our past experiences, whether positive or negative, can significantly impact our emotions and behaviors in the present. The emotion resulting from a traumatic experience, such as a child being bitten by a dog, can be stored in our unconscious mind and can resurface when we encounter a triggering environment. This emotion, or "samskar," can be thought of as a ball of undigested emotional energy that can influence our thoughts and actions. For instance, a person who has felt stupid in the past may continue to feel that way in certain environments, even if they intellectually know they are capable and intelligent. Understanding this principle can help us recognize and address the underlying causes of our emotions and behaviors, allowing us to heal and grow.

    • Improving emotional processing for personal growthAs we age, our ability to process negative emotions improves, freeing us from emotional scars and enhancing overall well-being. Acknowledging and addressing emotions leads to mental and emotional health and a more fulfilling life.

Processing negative emotions is essential for personal growth and emotional well-being. As we grow older, our ability to process emotions improves, and we can metabolize and digest our negative emotions through various means such as talking to a counselor, grieving, or engaging in activities that help us release energy. This process of emotional processing frees us from emotional scars and helps us move past difficult experiences. Our body and mind are connected, and neglecting to process negative emotions can lead to emotional baggage that can hinder our overall well-being. By acknowledging and addressing our emotions, we can improve our mental and emotional health and live more fulfilling lives.

    • Exploring Ways to Process and Release EmotionsEmotions and physical body are interconnected, and various practices like EFT, physical activities, and dream interpretation can help process and release pent-up emotions.

Our emotions and physical body are interconnected, and there are various ways to process and release pent-up emotions. One practice is the Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT), also known as tapping, which involves tapping on specific body points to help release emotional blocks. Another way is through physical activities like hiking or climbing mountains. Dreams and nightmares also serve a purpose in processing emotions. The mind and body work together to heal, and nightmares can be an opportunity to confront and process difficult emotions. Ethan shared that he's had to come to terms with a difficult emotion related to a past experience and struggles with processing emotions and standing up for himself. He also shared that he feels pressure to please others and not be perceived as an "asshole." These patterns may be linked to his past experiences and the need for validation from others. Understanding the connection between emotions and the body can help us better understand ourselves and find effective ways to process and release difficult emotions.

    • Bridging the gap between self-perception and external validationImposter syndrome is a complex issue that goes beyond feeling undeserving or unworthy. It's an interplay of emotions, experiences, and societal pressures. To overcome it, approach it with care, understanding, and a willingness to explore the underlying causes.

Understanding and addressing the disconnect between our internal sense of self and how the world perceives us can be crucial in overcoming feelings of imposter syndrome. Ethan's experience of feeling like he didn't deserve his success despite his hard work and dedication highlights this concept. His father's validation served as an external signal aligning with his passion, momentarily bridging the gap between his self-perception and the world's treatment. However, imposter syndrome is not a simple issue, and it's essential to recognize that it's not just about feeling undeserving or unworthy. It's a complex interplay of emotions, experiences, and societal pressures. Therefore, it's important to approach it with care, understanding, and a willingness to explore the underlying causes.

    • Feeling like a fraud despite external successImposter syndrome arises from a disconnect between internal sense of self and external societal respect, often leading to feelings of inadequacy and unworthiness.

Imposter syndrome, a feeling of inadequacy despite external signs of success, often arises when there's a disconnect between our internal sense of self and external societal respect. This disconnect can occur when there's a rapid elevation in status or when we compare ourselves to others. For instance, a student might feel like a big shot after getting into a prestigious university but then feel like a fraud when surrounded by peers. Or, a young professional might feel like an imposter after landing a high-paying job but then feel clueless and out of place in the workplace. The disconnect can also stem from a sense of unworthiness or feeling undeserving of one's accomplishments. This sense of worthiness, what's fair, do I syndrome, can be more spiritual in nature and distinct from imposter syndrome. Overall, understanding the root causes of these feelings can help us navigate them and cultivate a stronger sense of self-worth and self-confidence.

    • Understanding the Differences Between Imposter Syndrome and Feelings of UnworthinessImposter syndrome is the fear of being exposed as a fraud, while feelings of unworthiness may stem from deeper past experiences and beliefs. Both can be intensified by comparison, but recognizing their differences and addressing underlying causes can lead to self-acceptance and success.

Imposter syndrome and feelings of unworthiness are related but distinct concepts. Imposter syndrome is the fear of being exposed as a fraud, while feelings of unworthiness may have deeper roots in past experiences and beliefs about oneself. The comparison between oneself and others can exacerbate both feelings, leading to a sense of being overshadowed and undeserving of success. Understanding these underlying causes and recognizing the normalcy of comparison can be helpful in overcoming imposter syndrome and embracing one's worth and accomplishments.

    • Comparing oneself to others fuels conflicting emotionsRecognize and embrace self-identity from within, rather than relying on external comparisons to find true freedom and overcome imposter syndrome.

Comparing oneself to others can lead to conflicting emotions, ranging from feelings of honor and inspiration to feelings of degradation and self-doubt. This comparison is often fueled by our ego, which constantly seeks to compare and reinforce our self-image. However, the true source of our sense of identity should come from within, rather than being defined by external comparisons. Social media and other external influences can condition our minds to make constant comparisons, leading to an "assault on the mind" and increased suffering. To overcome imposter syndrome and find true freedom, it's essential to recognize and embrace who we truly are, rather than relying on external validation.

    • Exploring the depths of self-identityThrough introspection and reflection, we can uncover the unique qualities that make us who we are, despite external influences and feelings of imposter syndrome. Our true selves exist beyond our physical form and the roles we play in life.

Our sense of identity is often shaped by comparison and external factors, leading to feelings of imposter syndrome. However, to truly understand who we are, we must look inward and reflect on our experiences and the unique qualities that make us who we are. This process can be confusing and even scary, but it's an essential part of personal growth and self-discovery. Ultimately, our true selves exist beyond our physical form and the roles we play in life. We are all constantly growing and changing, but the core of who we are remains consistent. So, embrace the unfamiliarity of introspection and keep asking yourself, "Who am I?" The answers may surprise you.

    • Exploring the Deeper Sense of SelfUnderstanding and acknowledging emotions is crucial for personal growth and self-discovery, despite societal conditioning and challenges like Alexithymia.

Our identity goes beyond our physical body and mind, and it's essential to explore and understand this deeper sense of self to avoid being influenced too much by external factors like social media. The concept of "you-ness" transcends these aspects, and it's important to recognize and connect with it. Alexithymia, a condition where one struggles to identify and articulate emotions, can hinder this process. Men, in particular, are often conditioned to suppress emotions, making it even more challenging for them to recognize and process their feelings. By understanding and acknowledging our emotions, we can better diagnose and address the underlying issues, leading to better treatment and personal growth.

    • Struggling with feelings of being an imposter despite successesExploring philosophical concepts can help manage emotional scars and provide a sense of peace and stability, while recognizing they don't define us

Our past experiences and emotions, including feelings of inadequacy, can influence our present behavior and thoughts. Ethan, you've shared that you've struggled with feelings of being an imposter despite your successes. This phenomenon, known as a "scar," can make you feel like an 8-year-old version of yourself in certain situations, even though your adult self is capable and accomplished. This co-existence of different versions of yourself can be confusing and limiting. To better understand and manage these feelings, Ethan was encouraged to explore philosophical concepts like the theory of karma. Reflecting on one's beliefs and values can provide a sense of peace, happiness, and stability, and help answer questions about why we are the way we are and how we can use our resources to make a positive impact on the world. Additionally, it's important to recognize that these emotional scars don't define us and don't make us inherently stupid or incapable. By acknowledging their existence and learning to manage them, we can make the most of our talents and influence.

    • Understanding and connecting with our inner selvesTo combat feelings of imposter syndrome and external validation, connect with your inner self through introspection, self-exploration, and practices like meditation for personal growth, self-love, and a more fulfilling life.

Our internal sense of self and worth can be influenced and even distorted by external factors like social media. This can lead to feelings of imposter syndrome and an unhealthy reliance on external validation. To combat this, it's essential to understand and connect with who we truly are on the inside. This process is not only important for managing imposter syndrome but also for personal growth and self-love. It can be a challenging journey, but with consistent introspection and self-exploration, we can learn to silence the external voices and embrace our true selves. This journey towards self-discovery is not just a psychological one, but a spiritual one as well. It's about reconnecting with our inner selves and learning to love and accept who we are. This process can be facilitated through practices like meditation, which can help us gain clarity and focus on our inner world. Remember, the more we move towards our authentic selves, the more we can overcome self-doubt and live a more fulfilling life.

    • Exploring the Self through Experiential and Intellectual ApproachesThrough meditation, introspection, and philosophy, discover the self by focusing on inner experiences and intellectual understanding, while dreams and nightmares may offer unique insights.

Discovering the nature of the self or soul (Atman) involves both experiential and intellectual approaches. The experiential approach includes practices like meditation, where one can explore their inner self through focused attention. The intellectual approach involves contemplation, logic, and philosophy, helping us understand the nature of self through introspection and reasoning. A unique approach to self-discovery also lies in exploring dreams and nightmares, which can offer clues to our true selves. For those with ADHD, the meditation practice can be made more effective by embracing the challenges and noticing the part of yourself that intends and the part that fails, ultimately helping you understand the deeper aspects of your being.

    • Focused Breathing: Noticing vs. ThinkingFocused breathing involves noticing external sensations and gently bringing focus back to the breath to maintain mindfulness, distinguishing noticing from internal thinking.

The practice of focused breathing, as described in the discussion, involves consciously switching nostrils with each breath cycle. This practice helps keep the mind focused and can be used as a form of meditation. During the practice, the mind may wander, but the key is to notice when this happens and gently bring the focus back to the breath. A deeper understanding of the practice reveals the interaction between noticing and thinking. Noticing is an external process, while thinking is an internal one. The mind begins by noticing a sensation, such as a congested nostril, and then begins to think and make judgments about it. This can lead to distractions and a wandering mind. However, by noticing when the mind has wandered and gently bringing the focus back to the breath, one can maintain focus and reap the benefits of the practice. Additionally, the practice highlights the distinction between the noticing capacity and the thinking mind. The noticing capacity exists outside of the mind, while the thinking mind is an internal process. By recognizing this distinction and practicing focused breathing, one can develop greater awareness and mindfulness.

    • Beyond the mind lies a capacity for focus and presencePracticing focusing on a formless, observing capacity beyond the mind helps us train it to be more present and focused.

There is a capacity outside of the mind that can help us focus and notice distractions, and this capacity is closest to our true selves. The mind can be distracted, but there is something beyond it that can bring us back to the present moment. This observing capacity is formless and without qualities, and it is what notices everything else. It is the thing that gets us inspired and creates new ideas, even if the mind then shapes and executes them. By spending time in this space and practicing bringing our focus back to it when our minds wander, we can train our minds to come back and be more present. This practice is a mental "push up" that helps us develop the ability to focus and be more mindful. Ultimately, this capacity is what leads to enlightenment, as described by Buddha. So, the next time you find yourself distracted or feeling congested in your thoughts, remember that there is a part of you that can notice and bring you back to the present moment, and that this part of you is your true self.

    • Strengthening Your Focus Through MeditationEach time you bring your mind back to focus during meditation, you're training your attention and building mental strength.

Every time you meditate and your mind wanders, you are actually strengthening a capacity in your brain called frontal lobe inhibition. This means that with each distraction and subsequent return to focus, you are training your attention, much like how a dog learns to come back to heel. This mental strength training is often referred to as "mind push-ups" or "dharana" in Sanskrit. The more you practice this mental focus, the stronger your ability to concentrate becomes. It's not your mind that gets bigger, but rather you, the meditator, who grows in mental strength and control. Keep in mind that this process is a journey, and consistency is key. So, even if your mind wanders frequently during meditation, don't be discouraged – each time you bring it back to the present moment, you are making progress.
