Regarding antibacterial soap, it's important to consider whether its added benefits outweigh potential risks. Research suggests that antibacterial soap may not be significantly more effective than regular soap and could contribute to the evolution of antibiotic-resistant bacteria. Therefore, it's essential to evaluate the necessity of using antibacterial soap in all daily applications.

    • Overreliance on Antibacterial Products Can Make Us More Vulnerable to Harmful BacteriaOveruse of antibacterial products and a germ-free lifestyle can weaken our immune systems and make us more susceptible to drug-resistant bacteria and illnesses. Finding a balance between cleanliness and exposure to germs is essential for maintaining a healthy immune system.

Our overreliance on antibacterial products and the antibacterial lifestyle can actually make us more vulnerable to harmful, drug-resistant bacteria like MRSA. This super-resistant strain can be fatal and has been allowed to develop due to the widespread use of antibacterial drugs and cleaning products. However, trying to shield ourselves and our children from all germs by living in a completely sanitized environment can also have negative consequences. By not being exposed to allergens and not forming antibodies, we can weaken our immune systems and make ourselves more susceptible to illnesses. It's important to find a balance between cleanliness and exposure to germs to maintain a healthy immune system. In essence, the germs are getting stronger while we're staying the same, so it's crucial to allow ourselves to build up immunity through exposure to a reasonable amount of dirt and germs.

    • Exploring Alternatives to Antibacterial SoapsInstead of relying on antibacterial soaps, consider alternatives like bleach or new countertop materials that physically kill bacteria without added chemicals. These methods, such as bleach's lysis of microbes and new countertop materials' microscopic points, are more effective and less harmful.

Our reliance on antibacterial products, particularly soaps, may be doing more harm than good. Instead, we could consider alternatives like bleach or new countertop materials that use physical means to kill bacteria without the need for added chemicals. The discussion also touched upon the science behind these methods, such as bleach's ability to lyse microbes and the new countertop material's use of microscopic points to pierce and kill bacteria. Ultimately, it seems that there are more effective and less harmful ways to maintain cleanliness, and it's worth exploring these options. Additionally, the speaker expressed their personal decision to stop using antibacterial soap due to concerns about its potential negative effects.

    Breathe Through Your Nose

    Breathe Through Your Nose

Well, it may partly be due to a special molecule called nitric oxide. Michael Mosley speaks to Professor Jon Lundberg from the Karolinska Institute in Sweden who made the fascinating discovery that nitric oxide is produced in your nose and travels to your lungs where it has some surprising benefits, including boosting oxygen uptake and possibly helping you fight off infections. Our volunteer Joe tries out a few tips to make nasal breathing a habit.
