    • Prioritize Self-Care with Instacart During Illness and Back-to-School Shopping in North TexasWhen sick, prioritize self-care by using Instacart for essentials. During back-to-school, save money with North Texas' annual sales tax-free weekend.

When you're feeling under the weather and the pressure to work is high, prioritize self-care by utilizing services like Instacart. You don't have to push through illness just because a colleague is attending meetings despite being sick. In fact, trying to stay on top of things may only make things worse. Instead, take advantage of Instacart's delivery services for essentials like tissues, teas, cough suppressants, and comforting soups. Delegate tasks to your colleague if necessary. Another important takeaway is the annual sales tax-free weekend for back-to-school shopping in North Texas. This tradition started in 1999, and this year, it's estimated that Texans will save approximately $112 million in state and local sales tax. Retailers benefit from the extra publicity and potential sales during this weekend.

    • Texas Sales Tax Holiday: Decreased Revenue for State and Local EntitiesDuring the Sales Tax Holiday weekend, the state and local entities experience a decrease in sales tax revenue, but the impact on overall state revenue is minimal. Businesses benefit from increased sales as consumers save on taxes for certain items.

During Texas Sales Tax Holiday weekend, the state and local entities see a decrease in sales tax revenue, estimated to be around $112 million this year. However, this loss may not significantly impact the overall state revenue, considering the $3.88 billion in state sales tax revenue generated in the previous month. Businesses benefit from the weekend as consumers save on taxes for certain items, potentially increasing sales. The holiday weekend allows consumers to save on specific purchases, which they might not have made otherwise, ultimately benefiting businesses. The Texas Comptroller's office provides a list of eligible items on their website, texastaxholiday.org.

    • Texas Tax Holiday: Save on NecessitiesDuring certain weekends, Texas families can save on necessities like diapers, gloves, and tennis shoes by not paying sales tax.

During certain weekends in Texas, families can save money on select items by not paying sales tax. These tax-exempt items include necessities like diapers (both adult and child), gloves, and tennis shoes. However, it's important to note that certain related items, such as track cleats and baseball gloves, are still subject to sales tax because they cannot be worn in a classroom setting. This tax holiday is designed to help families save on essentials and prepare for various activities, like football and basketball seasons, while also keeping in mind the educational environment.

    • Texas Tax-Free Weekend: Items Exempt from Sales TaxDuring Texas Tax-Free Weekend, families could potentially save up to $120 million by not paying sales tax on items priced at $100 or less.

The Texas Tax-Free Weekend list, available at TexasTaxHaulDay.org, determines which items are exempt from sales tax during this annual event. The list is determined by lawmakers at the Texas Capitol, who vote on additions or removals. An average family of four could save up to $120 million during the weekend, depending on their purchases. For instance, if a family spends $100 on an item, they would save $8.25 in sales tax. This applies to any item priced at $100 or less. The list has remained static for a long time, but if it changes, the organization will comply.

Why are accessible swimming lessons crucial for preventing drownings?

Why are accessible swimming lessons crucial for preventing drownings?

Knowing how to swim isn't just out of fun for the summer, it's also important to recognize that not everyone has always had the opportunity to learn to swim. This is why it is so important to recognize, in order to save lives around the water-- swimming lessons should be available for everyone.

"Only 46% of Black and 47% of Latine children had swimming lessons, compared to 72% of white children," according to a parent survey (Northwestern/Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children’s Hospital of Chicago). Studies show there is a generational influence, if the parent doesn't know how to swim, most likely, the child will not learn either.

To help break this cycle, the YMCA of Metropolitan Dallas is stepping in with the goal to eliminate childhood drowning (CDC says drowning is the leading cause of death for children ages 1-4). The Y partners with apartment complexes across the metroplex to offer free Safety Around Water lessons (SAW) to children who otherwise wouldn't have access. Last year, the SAW program served 5,834 swimmers!

On Ask the Expert, Jen Pewitt joined the KRLD Afternoon News. She is the Vice President of the YMCA Metropolitan Dallas.
