    • From aspiring actor to policy and government work - the value of a diverse backgroundA diverse background can provide valuable skills and insights, even if the career path is unconventional. Breaking down problems and applying rigor can help solve complex issues.

Having a diverse background and experience can lead to valuable insights and problem-solving skills. Thomas, the guest in this conversation, shared his unconventional career path from aspiring actor to policy and government work, including stints in the Clinton administration and for Elliot Spitzer as the first CMO for the state of New York. He also worked at McKinsey and in banking. Thomas learned that breaking down problems into their pieces and applying rigor can help solve almost anything. However, he also acknowledged that the private sector, with its clear and measurable objectives, can be easier to navigate compared to the public sector. Despite the challenges, Thomas's diverse background and experiences have given him a unique perspective and the ability to approach problems from different angles. This is a reminder that our past experiences, no matter how unconventional, can provide us with valuable skills and insights.

    • The public sector offers valuable insights for businessesBusinesses can learn from the public sector to manage stakeholders effectively and adapt to societal expectations

The roles and responsibilities of businesses have evolved significantly, especially in the context of public sector work and community engagement. For entrepreneurs and business leaders, the health and success of their ventures have always been closely tied to their personal well-being. However, working in the public sector exposes one to a multitude of stakeholders and complex interests, making it challenging to define and measure success. Despite these challenges, the public sector offers valuable insights for businesses, particularly in managing stakeholders and adapting to changing societal expectations. Brands and businesses can play a positive role in society and policy, and the lines between the public and private sectors are increasingly blurred. The speaker's diverse career experiences, from leading strategy at Google to joining Uber, underscore the importance of being adaptable and open to new opportunities in today's rapidly changing business landscape.

    • Uber's Crisis PreparednessDuring crises, being proactive and adaptable with a well-prepared leadership team can lead to success.

Even during crises, companies like Uber, known for their reach and boldness, can adapt and thrive. Uber, which had a leadership summit in February, had already begun scenario planning and organizing for potential crises. When the pandemic hit, the company went into its best mode, with its rigorous operational structure helping it respond effectively. Travis Freeman, a former executive at Vayner who now works at Uber, shared that the company had been well-prepared, with leaders coming together for a full three days to plan and strategize. This experience shows that being proactive and adaptable, even during uncertain times, can lead to success.

    • Uber's role as an essential service during COVID-19Uber prioritized clear communication with health authorities, encouraged responsible use, and went against brand identity to put people and communities first during the pandemic.

During the early stages of the COVID-19 pandemic, Uber recognized its unique position as an essential service with a vast reach and felt a responsibility to step up as a citizen leader. The company prioritized clear communication with health authorities and encouraged users to only ride when necessary to help "flatten the curve." Uber even went against its brand identity and ran an ad campaign urging people not to use its product. These actions demonstrated Uber's commitment to putting people and communities first, aligning with Dara Khosrowshahi's vision for the company.

    • Adapting to changing consumer needs and societal issuesUber pivots marketing strategy in real-time, utilizing remote tools and focus groups to stay connected and responsive to consumers, while also adapting to new trends like DTC buying and OTT platforms.

In today's rapidly changing world, companies like Uber need to be agile and responsive to consumer needs and societal issues in real-time. Uber's Executive, Thomas, shared how they've pivoted their marketing strategy multiple times in the past few months, creating ads within days in response to current events. The infrastructure of remote working, including Zoom, Google Hangouts, Slack, email, and text, has enabled this real-time marketing and increased overall speed. Uber has also stayed close to consumer perception by conducting focus groups regularly. The importance of being responsive and adaptable is crucial for businesses in these unprecedented times. Additionally, Thomas shared some personal insights on behavior shifts and new trends, such as the rise of direct-to-consumer buying and OTT platforms. Overall, the ability to pivot and stay connected to consumers is key to success in today's fast-paced world.

    • Embracing Human Connections and Simple PleasuresFocusing on human connections and simple joys can bring memorable experiences and happiness in life, despite stress and technological distractions.

Prioritizing human connections and simple pleasures can bring more memorable experiences and happiness in life, even amidst stress and technological distractions. The speaker shared how their daily walks with their dog, proper dinners with their partner, and reaching out to old friends and family have been more meaningful than they expected. Despite some challenges, like their partner's online shopping habit, they emphasized the importance of embracing these human connections and cherishing them. The speaker also appreciated the affirmation they received from their listeners and looked forward to spending time with loved ones. Overall, the discussion emphasized the importance of focusing on human connections and simple joys to enrich our lives.

The Most Important Question In Business

The Most Important Question In Business

Here’s the problem most people run into when they create content online: They think they have to have something to say. So many of you aren’t putting out content online because you think you need to have the perfect message, or something “valuable” to share (based on your own arbitrary opinion). And what I’m telling you is, you will get more business if you put out literally anything. If you’re an auto dealer, you could put out a 5 min video every afternoon just recapping what happened in your day. If you’re a real estate agent, you could post updates on what your opinions are about the Super Bowl teams. Get on social media and tell your truth … it’s really that simple.

5 Core Pieces of Value to Get You to Succeed

5 Core Pieces of Value to Get You to Succeed

There are so many people racing to earn more money than they can even spend even if they have to sacrifice their happiness and livelihood to do so. The really disturbing part about this is that most of these people only want the money so they can be flashy and show off their overly expensive cars (that they don't even want) and other dumb things to other people. Happiness needs to be the Northstar that we strive towards. If we aren't aiming to be happy, then is it really worth having more money than you can spend and more cars than you can drive? —

1 in 4 community college students studies at a California college. Meet the man in charge of them

California Community Colleges Chancellor Eloy Ortiz Oakley knows firsthand the importance of receiving both an affordable, quality education and the proper guidance during those years. After serving in the Army following high school and then transferring from Golden West College to UC Irvine, Oakley ultimately became the first Latino to serve as Chancellor for the largest system of higher education in the country while also sitting on the board of Regents for the University of California. He opens up to host Giselle Fernandez about the initiatives he's implemented in order to ensure students receive the best education possible — one of which aims to eliminate inequities and achievement gaps so that college is more accessible, diverse and affordable. Oakley also discusses the challenges community college students have faced in the past year with the COVID-19 pandemic, which has actually helped shine a light on problems communities have faced all along — such as limited broadband access.
