What Makes A Football Movie Great?

What Makes A Football Movie Great?
Hollywood films have long tried to capture America's obsession with its most popular sport. So on this Super Bowl weekend, we ask: what do the best football movies have in common?

Is it the "Big Speech" with the team down a point and only seconds to go? Or what about the classic underdog story?

Scott Detrow discusses that with Brittany Luse, host of NPR's It's Been a Minute, and with Stephen Thompson of NPR's Pop Culture Happy Hour.

What’s wrong with the remote vs. in-office debate? w/Atlassian co-CEO Scott Farquhar

What’s wrong with the remote vs. in-office debate? w/Atlassian co-CEO Scott Farquhar

The backlash against remote work is in full swing, with 90% of CEOs reportedly rewarding in-office workers with more promotions and raises. But to Scott Farquhar, co-CEO of Atlassian, that’s a big mistake — and in a just-released study, he’s got hard numbers to back him up. Scott talks with Rapid Response host Bob Safian about how the 10,000-person collaboration-software company — Australia’s premier tech startup — is defying the trend with a bold gambit called Team Anywhere. Adhering to an Atlassian core value (“no bullshit”), Scott shares insights about work flexibility, productivity, and the unexpected power of sporadic, but intentional gatherings. To prepare for the future of work, he says, business leaders need to take risks.

If you're interested in learning more from Atlassian and Scott be sure to check out "Lessons Learned," a report about how Atlassian has navigated distributed work at scale, including experiments they've run, data they've collected, and stories Atlassian employees have shared: https://www.atlassian.com/solutions/distributed/lessons-learned

Remix: Scott Harrison & charity: water, 5 years later

In the five years since Scott Harrison’s first appearance on Masters of Scale with Reid Hoffman, the nonprofit organization he founded, charity: water, has scaled 5 times over. In this episode, he and host Bob Safian reflect on that journey by revisiting some of the stories and lessons from his original episode, and Scott shares new lessons of scale he's learned since.

Never Enough: 7 Ways to Protect Yourself (and Your Kids) From Toxic Pressure

Never Enough: 7 Ways to Protect Yourself (and Your Kids) From Toxic Pressure

In this episode, award-winning Harvard-educated journalist and researcher Jenny Wallace is here to discuss “toxic achievement” and the toxic pressure that makes you feel that no matter what you do or what level of success you achieve, it will never be enough.

You feel toxic pressure at work, and you feel toxic pressure at home. Jenny Wallace, who just completed a major research study with over 6,000 kids and their parents, is here to tell you this unhealthy pressure is trickling down to your kids, who are buckling under the never-ending demands to measure up.

Whether you are sick of spending every weekend racing from one sporting event or club team practice to another, or you are tired of the never-ending video calls that keep you working day and night, one thing is clear: something has to give.

Your worth is not determined by the things you achieve.

Jenny Wallace is here with the research and the findings that say all this pressure is backfiring because all anyone really wants is to feel like they matter.

According to her research, there are seven changes you can make that will boost your kids’ confidence and resilience and get you off this hamster wheel that is leading nowhere.

If you struggle with work-life balance and feel burned out, the research will empower you to:

    • Learn the one question to ask your kid that shows you love them.
    • Stop working yourself into the ground to prove your worth.
    • Why you are your harshest critic and the simple things you need to do to become your biggest fan.
    • Snip the tie between achievement and self-worth.
    • Unplug yourself from the stress loop of other people and never get rattled again.
    • The 3 things you can do to show people you love that they matter to you.
    • Stop beating yourself up for not having the perfect home or getting A’s on every test, and prioritize what really matters instead.

I want you to get off the hamster wheel and stop being obsessed with achieving, having, and winning.

You hold the key to helping yourself and others feel like they matter in this world.

    It’s time to unlock it.

    Xo, Mel

Why you should talk to strangers, with Gillian Sandstrom, PhD, and Jon Levy

Why you should talk to strangers, with Gillian Sandstrom, PhD, and Jon Levy

Despite the fact that so many people profess to dislike making small talk, it turns out that talking to strangers and acquaintances can actually strengthen our mental health and enrich our lives. What do we gain from meeting new people? What have we been missing out on this past year as COVID-19 has restricted these social interactions? And how can we become better at talking to strangers? We discuss these questions with Gillian Sandstrom, PhD, a senior lecturer in psychology at the University of Essex who studies what she calls “minimal social interactions,” and Jon Levy, a consultant, writer and speaker who founded “the Influencers Dinner,” a regular gathering that brings together strangers who are leaders in their fields.

Are you enjoying Speaking of Psychology? We’d love to know what you think of the podcast, what you would change about it, and what you’d like to hear more of. Please take our listener survey at www.apa.org/podcastsurvey.
