‘Kids Are Dying. How Are These Sites Still Allowed?’

    enDecember 09, 2021

    Podcast Summary

    • A dangerous website linked to 45 suicidesA website with 6 million views per month, linked to 45 suicides, including minors, highlights the need for awareness and help for those struggling with suicidal thoughts.

A specific website, which facilitates suicide discussions, has been identified in a New York Times investigation to be a dangerous platform, particularly for young people. The site, which receives 6 million views per month, has been linked to at least 45 confirmed suicides, including several minors. The site's anonymity makes it difficult to monitor and shut down. Despite the potential risks of reporting on suicide, the Times decided to publish the story due to the significant impact the site was having. Parents have expressed frustration and concern, often being unaware that their children were using the site until it was too late. The site's reach and influence underscores the importance of raising awareness and seeking help for those struggling with suicidal thoughts. If you or someone you know is struggling with suicidal thoughts, resources such as the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline (1800-738-255) are available.

    • A Mother's Love and Support for Her Pansexual SonLove and acceptance are crucial, but mental health struggles and external factors can still impact young people, highlighting the importance of addressing suicidal thoughts and feelings openly and honestly.

The power of love and acceptance can be a crucial factor in the lives of young people, especially during challenging times. The mother in this story shared her experience of raising an extroverted, pansexual son named Matthew, who had a close-knit group of friends. Matthew came out to his family and friends at a young age and was open about his sexuality. He aspired to become a public defender and help people, showing his compassionate and caring nature. Tragically, one Tuesday night, Matthew expressed feeling unwell and didn't join the family for dinner. The next day, his parents found him unresponsive in his room. They later discovered that he had been using a suicide website called Sanctioned Suicide. The site was created as a response to the closure of a similar forum on Reddit, providing a space for people to speak freely about their suicidal thoughts without censorship. Although Matthew's family was supportive and accepting of his sexuality, the discovery of his use of the suicide website came as a shock. It serves as a reminder that, despite the love and support from family and friends, external factors and mental health struggles can still impact individuals in profound ways. It's essential to continue the conversation about mental health, support systems, and the importance of addressing suicidal thoughts and feelings openly and honestly.

    • Online communities can normalize and facilitate harmful behaviors, especially for vulnerable populationsOnline communities, particularly those about sensitive topics, can provide a dangerous platform for individuals to share detailed plans and receive advice on harmful behaviors, increasing the likelihood of following through with suicidal thoughts.

Online communities, even those focused on sensitive topics, can be addictive and dangerous, particularly for vulnerable populations. A site dedicated to discussions about suicide, for instance, may appear slick and moderated, but it can also normalize and facilitate harmful behaviors. With easy access and a large user base, mainly consisting of young individuals, such sites can provide a platform for people to share detailed plans and receive advice on suicide methods. Experts warn that this kind of content can increase the likelihood of individuals following through with their suicidal thoughts. It's crucial to be aware of the potential risks and take steps to ensure the safety and well-being of those who may be at risk.

    • The Dangerous Impact of a Suicide WebsiteAwareness of online dangers, increased vigilance, education, and support are crucial for at-risk populations in the digital age.

The internet can provide a dangerous space for vulnerable individuals, as seen in the case of a suicide website where members encouraged each other to use a specific method to end their lives. Many people, including parents, mental health professionals, and even law enforcement, were unaware of this disturbing activity. The creators of the site, who went by the usernames Marquis and Sarge, left few clues about their identities, making it difficult to hold them accountable. This case highlights the importance of raising awareness about the potential dangers of the internet and the need for increased vigilance and education regarding online safety, especially for at-risk populations. The tragic story also underscores the importance of destigmatizing mental health issues and providing resources and support for those in need.

    • The Dark Side of Incel Communities: Anger, Sadness, and HopelessnessIncel communities can be dangerous and extreme, leading some members to express feelings of anger, sadness, and hopelessness, and even consider suicide. Digital sleuthing and hacking can uncover the identities of influential figures, leading to a wealth of information and potential consequences.

The incel community, made up largely of men who believe they cannot find love or sexual partners due to their looks and social status, can be a dangerous and extreme subculture. Members often express feelings of anger, sadness, and hopelessness, and some even view suicide as a solution. Marquis and Sarge, two influential figures in this community, ran several incel websites and spoke openly about their dark outlook on life. Despite their efforts to remain anonymous, investigators were able to uncover their true identities through a combination of digital sleuthing and a major hack. The discovery led to a wealth of information, including their names, contact information, and even a credit card invoice for the suicide site. This case underscores the importance of addressing the root causes of the incel mindset and providing resources for those who are struggling. It also highlights the potential dangers of anonymous online communities and the need for continued vigilance in the digital world.

    • Identified the administrators of a sanctioned suicide websiteTwo individuals were linked to a suicide website through substantial evidence, including documents, email addresses, credit card numbers, and addresses, but their involvement and potential accountability are complex.

Diego and LaMarcus, two individuals who were initially denying any involvement with a sanctioned suicide website, were later identified as the site's administrators through substantial evidence. Despite their denials, documents, email addresses, credit card numbers, and addresses linked them to the site. Furthermore, photographs obtained confirmed their identities as Sarge and Marquis. However, the discovery of their identities does not necessarily mean they can be held accountable for their actions, as the legal implications of running such a website are complex.

    • Website Operators in Legal Gray Area for Suicide Discussion SitesDespite not directly posting suicide methods, operators of controversial websites discussing suicide may still be operating in a legal gray area, leaving parents of those who have died seeking help and appealing to tech companies and law enforcement with little success.

While the creators of a controversial website aren't directly posting suicide methods or encouraging users, they may still be operating in a legal gray area. The site, which allows users to discuss and share suicide methods, is currently untouchable in the United States due to inconsistent state laws and the protection given to website operators. The lack of clear federal legislation leaves parents of those who have died pleading for help and appealing to tech companies and law enforcement with little success. This situation raises important questions about the responsibility of website operators when it comes to user-generated content that causes harm, especially in cases of suicide. Until these questions are addressed, sites like this one may continue to exist, providing a platform for individuals to learn and facilitate deadly actions.

    • Latest COVID-19 vaccine updates and US vaccination milestoneThree doses offer protection against omicron, but health officials urge booster shots due to variant mutations. Over 200 million Americans are now fully vaccinated, leading to a surge in vaccinations.

While preliminary data suggests that three doses of the Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine offer significant protection against the omicron variant, health officials are urging all adults to get booster shots due to the unique mutations of the variant. Meanwhile, over 200 million Americans, or 60% of the population, are now fully vaccinated as a result of the omicron variant prompting a surge in vaccinations. It's important for individuals to stay informed about the latest vaccine recommendations and prioritize getting boosted to ensure the best possible protection against the virus. The grief process can be exhausting for those whose loved ones are affected by the pandemic, and it's crucial to support each other through these challenging times. The Daily is a podcast that covers various news topics, and this episode discussed the latest updates on the COVID-19 vaccine and the current vaccination milestone in the US.
