About this Episode

The Swedish History (6b)
Gustav Wasa had carried through the reform that made the Swedes protestants. His intention was to quit the wealth from the church, to pay the costs for the struggle for independence. During the 17th century, in the battle between the Protestants and the Catholics, Gustav II Adolf decided to intervene in the Thirty Years War, this in order to defend his faith and conquer land. He died in the fight, but Sweden was lucky in the peace negotiations and received different areas in the Baltic States.
The Swedish nobility earned a lot through the war. Queen Kristina, daughter to Gustav II Adolf gave it land donations so the country was near bankruptcy. She liked the Catholicism more ( daughter of a king that gave his life to defend the Protestantism – really an irony). She followed her faith and went to Rome. There she´s buried in the Peters Church.
Her cousin Karl X Gustav inherited the crown. His greatest achievement was to conquer the southern landscapes. It gave Sweden access to Öresund, the sound at the approach to the Baltic. That’s why people in the south have a special dialect, a little more Danish. The rest of the century from 1660 and forward the kings struggled to take back Kristinas donations. They inaugurated the absolutism to be able to rule the country without problems.

Svenska historien (6b)
Hennes kusin Karl X Gustav ärvde kronan.
