    • Keep the river of consciousness flowing freelyFind healthy outlets to help flush emotions and prevent blockages, such as sleep, exercise, journaling, or meditation, to maintain overall well-being.

Our thoughts, feelings, and emotions flow through us like a river, and it's important for this river of consciousness to keep moving freely. When we encounter struggles or discomfort, blockages can form, causing a dam that prevents the river from flowing properly. These blockages can manifest in various forms, such as beliefs, worries, fears, guilt, anger, and hate. Over time, these blockages can build up and make the water toxic and harder to deal with. To prevent this, it's essential to find healthy outlets to help flush the energy and emotions through, such as getting a good night's sleep, exercising, journaling, or meditating. By doing so, we can keep our river of consciousness flowing smoothly and maintain our overall well-being.

    • Expressing thoughts and feelings through communication aids personal growthCommunicating our problems to someone or even a teddy bear helps us understand ourselves better. Being a good listener and creating a safe space for others to express themselves allows them to release what's blocking them and grow.

Communication is key to personal growth and stronger relationships. Speaking about our problems to someone, even if it's just a teddy bear, can help us understand our thoughts and feelings better. On the other hand, being a good listener and creating a safe space for others to express themselves is equally important. By talking and listening, we allow ourselves and others to release what's blocking us and grow. So, take a moment to communicate, whether it's through words or actions, and remember that you have the power to change the world through kindness to yourself and others. No matter what challenges come your way, you have the strength to overcome them.

    139. Lose Yourself: The Secret to Finding Flow and Being Fully Present

    139. Lose Yourself: The Secret to Finding Flow and Being Fully Present

Whether you're looking to boost your productivity, find more joy in your work, or simply be more present in the moment, you need flow — and research by Assistant Professor David Melnikoff could help you find it.

Melnikoff investigates how we pursue our goals, and how flow — the state of being totally immersed and engaged in what we’re doing — can help us achieve them. According to him, flow isn’t necessarily about enjoying a task or activity for its own sake, but more about the process of discovery that unfolds as we take action in the face of uncertainty. “The source of flow is engaging in an activity that allows you to reduce uncertainty about your future, engaging in actions that reduce possible future outcomes, or ideally, eliminate all possible future outcomes except for one,” he says. With each action that we take, the path before us narrows, leading us more directly to the goal that we’ve set.

In this episode of Think Fast, Talk Smart, Melnikoff shares why uncertainty presents us with the opportunity to step into the flow state, to experience more focus and engagement, and to supercharge our goal pursuit and performance
