    Listener Mail: Spin Kick!

    enDecember 28, 2020

    Podcast Summary

    • Focusing on a point helps maintain balance and prevent dizzinessFocusing on a specific point during spinning or balancing activities can help prevent dizziness and improve balance. A folk remedy for recovering from spinning-related dizziness involves making hands into a blade shape and placing the thumb between the eyebrows.

Focusing on a specific point or vertical line while spinning or balancing can help prevent dizziness and maintain balance. Hannah, a listener, shared her personal experience of using this technique in dance and yoga, and noted that it takes time for young dancers to learn to spot effectively due to developing motor skills and the fun factor of spinning. Additionally, she suggested a folk remedy for recovering from spinning-related dizziness: making hands into a blade shape and placing the thumb between the eyebrows to act as a barrier between the eyes. This technique may help reduce the rapid adjustment of the eyes that contributes to dizziness.

    • Exploring the Fascination of Spinning: Dance, Spirituality, Science, and ResearchSpinning has captivated people for centuries through dance, spiritual practices, scientific research, and more. It can aid recovery from nystagmus, result from inner ear mutations in zebrafish, and historically provoke altered consciousness in Sufi practices.

The practice of spinning, whether it's through dance or as part of spiritual practices like those of the Sufis, has intrigued people for centuries. Hannah shared her experience of how focusing on the turning motions in dance can help with recovery from nystagmus. Cassidy, who works in a research lab studying vestibular system genes in zebrafish, shared how these creatures' spinning behavior is a result of mutations affecting their inner ears and their ability to orient themselves in water. Jonathan, with his expertise in Sufi studies, highlighted how the practice of whirling was historically used in Turkey to provoke alterations in consciousness and was not a perennial part of Sufi methods. Overall, the discussion emphasized the fascination and significance of spinning in various contexts, from dance and spirituality to science and research.

    • Exploring the Practical Applications of Spinning TechniquesSpinning techniques in combat generate power, create distance, and efficiently execute kicks like the sidekick.

Spinning techniques in combat, such as spin kicks, serve practical purposes beyond just aesthetics. According to Xi, a listener and MMA competitor, spinning helps generate power and create artificial distance. It also allows for faster and more efficient execution of certain kicks, like the sidekick. Xi's insights came in response to a discussion on the show about the usefulness of spinning techniques, which had sparked curiosity about their practical applications. Overall, the conversation underscored the importance of continuous learning and the value of feedback from listeners. So keep the insights coming, and we'll keep exploring the fascinating world of combat and psychology.

    • Exploring the Intersection of Wrestling and DanceUnderstanding opponents' moves can lead to advantageous moments in combat sports, while awareness and adaptability are crucial in both combat sports and the human body.

Being a ring or cage general in MMA involves having complete control over one's space and being aware of an opponent's counterattacks. Spinning attacks can be risky, but understanding an opponent's moves can lead to advantageous moments. A recent listener question explored the intersection of wrestling and dance, leading to the discovery of Ladybeard, an Australian wrestler turned performer in the eccentric Japanese pro wrestling promotion DDT. Another listener, Brett, shared a personal experience with vertigo and the importance of the inner ear's crystals in maintaining balance. These discussions highlight the importance of awareness, adaptability, and the intricacies of both combat sports and the human body.

    • Understanding context is key to effective techniquesIn different activities, certain techniques may be more or less effective based on the context and rules. Regularly checking in with your body in yoga can lead to self-awareness and diagnosis, while spinning moves in self-defense may not be advisable due to the risk of having your back turned. Always consider the specific context to make informed decisions.

The context and purpose of an activity significantly influence whether certain techniques, like spin kicks, are effective or necessary. In yoga practice, checking in with your body regularly can lead to improved self-awareness and diagnosis. In contrast, in self-defense practices like Chinese Kenpo Karate, spinning moves may not be advisable due to the risk of having your back turned to an opponent. However, during training, spinning kicks and backfists can be used to build coordination and balance, as well as to break an opponent's pattern. Ultimately, understanding the specific context and rules of a given activity is crucial for making informed decisions about the techniques used.

    • Exploring the Effects of g Forces on Humans in Space TravelG forces in space travel can be extreme and require careful planning or technology to mitigate their impact on the human body.

The effects of g forces on the human body in space travel can be both scientifically intriguing and challenging. During the recent episode on spinning, a listener named Ryan brought up the movie "Interstellar" and its depiction of a pilot experiencing intense g forces. This led Ryan to suggest an episode topic on g forces in space travel, where Robert and Joe could explore real-life examples of how humans have dealt with these forces and discuss various fictional works that tackle the subject. While some fiction, like "The Expanse," approach g forces realistically, others, like Kim Stanley Robinson's "2312," use careful planning to minimize their impact. Previously, Robert and Joe had touched on the idea of creating artificial gravity in space through spinning or acceleration, but not the extreme g forces experienced during space travel. This could make for an interesting and educational exploration.

    • Pop culture references and personal experiences enrich conversationsTraining and adaptation are crucial in dealing with unexpected situations, as seen in Iron Man, Robocop 2, and Robot Jox, as well as in real-life experiences like using VR headsets.

Our discussion touched on various topics, including the intriguing scene from the Iron Man movie where the protagonist, Robert Downey Jr., experiences a loss of consciousness while piloting his suit and manages to recover before crashing. This scene, as Bentley pointed out, shares similarities with both Robocop 2 and the film Robot Jox. Another listener, Silas, shared a personal experience of dealing with motion sickness while using a Virtual Reality (VR) headset, drawing a parallel to the concepts discussed in our podcast episode. Both Bentley's and Silas' messages added value to the conversation, highlighting the importance of training and adaptation in dealing with unexpected situations, whether in a high-pressure fighter pilot scenario or while using new technology like VR headsets. Overall, our discussion showcased the power of pop culture references and personal experiences in fostering engaging and meaningful conversations.

    • Using the body and environment for lucid dream stabilityThe body and environment can serve as stable references to help individuals maintain their lucid dreams by providing unchanging elements and integrating vestibular system information with visual information.

The body and environment can serve as stable references to help individuals stabilize and prolong lucid dreams. Lucid dreaming, a phenomenon where individuals become aware they're dreaming and can control the dream, can be achieved through various techniques such as reality checks and dream journaling. One popular reality check is counting fingers, which often results in a different number in dreams. The loss of visual detail and color in dreams is a common sign of an impending end, making it essential to focus on other senses like touch to maintain lucid dreams. Harold von Morsier Messmer, a pioneer in lucid dreaming, suggested using the ground beneath the feet or the body as a stable reference point to help maintain lucid dreams. This is because the body and ground provide relatively unchanging elements in the dream world, which can help stabilize the dreamer's identity amidst rapidly changing dreamscapes. Moreover, the integration of vestibular system information with visual information in the brain results in a stable perception of the world, even when the head is moving. This integration may help decrease the likelihood of awakening during dream spinning, as the brain processes the movement information and visual information together, creating a more stable dream experience. Overall, understanding the role of the body and environment in lucid dreaming can help individuals develop effective techniques for stabilizing and prolonging their lucid dreams.

    • Exploring the impact of spinning on dream durationSpinning during dreams may prolong the dream by stimulating similar brain systems to those involved in physical movement and REM sleep, and imagining internal sensory experiences can decrease sensitivity to external stimuli, increasing the chances of a longer dream.

The technique of spinning during dreaming may help prolong the dream by stimulating the brain systems involved in both physical movement and REM sleep. This is because the brain systems responsible for processing vestibular activity during spinning are similar to those activated during actual movement. Additionally, imagining internal sensory experiences can decrease sensitivity to external stimuli, making it harder for the brain to distinguish between dreaming and reality. An experiment conducted by Lucid dreaming researchers further supports this, as they found that spinning and hand-rubbing techniques significantly increased the likelihood of prolonging a dream. However, some individuals, including the speakers in this discussion, have expressed skepticism towards the importance or insightfulness of dreams, considering them more as a distracting and unpleasant experience rather than a valuable tool for self-exploration or understanding.

    3203 Thirst For More

    3203 Thirst For More

Life is a delicate balance of ups and downs, a symphony of experiences that shape us. As we enter the holiday season, don't get bogged down in the rough patches. Rise above and thirst for more.

And no, not more of the challenges. As you know, it's natural to encounter challenges that may leave you feeling exhausted, disappointed, or discouraged. Instead of getting bogged down in those rough patches and ditches, you get to rise above and embrace the transformative power of gratitude. This will open your heart and allow you to thirst for more.

Desire to be supported and encouraged by other like-minded women? Join us at Women of IMPACT. https://createyournow.mn.co

"Embrace gratitude as a catalyst for expansion, for within its embrace lies the key to unlocking your ability to thirst for more."

We all possess an inherent desire to make a difference, to have a positive impact on the world we touch. Often, though, we tend to focus on what we lack or the obstacles we face. Yet, through the lens of gratitude, we can shift our perspective and acknowledge the blessings that surround us.

Thirsting for more, when rooted in gratitude, is not a pursuit of material wealth or external validation. It's not about getting more of something. In fact, it's about harnessing the power of appreciation to expand your capacity for impact and influence, kindness and compassion; hope in the making.

Imagine a flower reaching towards the sun, rooted in the earth, but constantly stretching towards the light. In the same way, gratitude nourishes your soul, anchoring you in the present while propelling you forward to seek more impactful ways of living.

The K.I.S.S. ~ Thirst for more!

By cultivating gratitude, you then recognize that challenges are not roadblocks; they are invitations for growth and expansion. Rather than dwelling on what you lack, you shift your focus to the abundance that exists within and around you. Gratitude becomes the catalyst that propels you to make a meaningful difference and amplify your impact.

During the holiday season, it's easy to get caught up in the whirlwind of festivities and consumerism. However, the true essence of this time lies in recognizing and appreciating the blessings we've been gifted with. Gratitude invites us to acknowledge the love, support, and opportunities we encounter daily, deepening our connection to the world and those around us.

When you experience gratitude, you radiate positivity and attract more reasons to be thankful. It becomes a ripple effect, transforming not only your own life but also those you interact with.

As you navigate the ebb and flow of life, let gratitude permeate and expand every aspect of your being. Allow it to shape your actions, relationships, and aspirations. Let it be a reminder that you have the power to touch lives, to create change, and to make a lasting impact by being a living legacy.

"Embrace gratitude as a catalyst for expansion, for within its embrace lies the key to unlocking your ability to thirst for more." ~ Kristianne Wargo

So, as you embrace the holiday season, let gratitude be your guiding light, leading you to a place of genuine appreciation and a deepened desire to expand your impact.

May you rise above the challenges, recognizing them as opportunities for growth. May gratitude infuse your actions and intentions, allowing you to make a positive difference in the lives of others. And as you journey forward, thirst for more, not out of greed, but as an expression of your gratitude and commitment to leave this world a better place.

"Be present. Be incredible. Be YOU!!!"
