    • Impact of rituals and practices despite lack of understandingRituals and practices, even if not fully understood, can still influence our actions and experiences, as seen in literature, music, philosophy, and everyday life.

The use of rituals or practices, even if they don't fully understand their purpose, can still have an effect. This was discussed in relation to the anointing of weapons and the idea that forgotten technology can only be maintained, not fully replicated. Fletch brought up examples from literature and music, such as Elric of Melnibone's Stormbringer and Blue Oyster Cult's Veteran of the Psychic Wars. They also talked about how tools can influence our actions and perspective, as seen in Joe Abercrombie's novel "The Blade Itself" and Immanuel Kant's philosophy. Fletch also shared the example of Rogue Trooper from the 2000 AD comic strip, whose rifle, helmet, and backpack had the personalities of his dead comrades. In a listener's email, Max shared an experience of queuing in a Michelin Star restaurant in Singapore, where finding a table required self-governance and analyzing other diners to determine who would finish eating first. Overall, the discussion touched on the idea that even if we don't fully understand the reasons behind certain practices or technologies, they can still have a significant impact on our actions and experiences.

    • The way we wait can impact our experienceRecognizing the influence of waiting environments on our perception of events can help us manage stress and improve overall enjoyment.

The experience of waiting can significantly impact the value and enjoyment of the thing we're waiting for, whether it's food in a restaurant or boarding a plane. The way we're made to wait, such as self-governing in a food court or following a first-come, first-serve queue, can alter our mentality and even stress levels. For instance, waiting in a food court for a table after getting your food can be more stressful than the initial queue. Similarly, waiting to board a plane can feel unnecessary if you have ample legroom in your seat. The discomfort of waiting in such situations can diminish the overall experience, especially when the thing we're waiting for is meant to be enjoyable or pleasant. However, people may become accustomed to these environments if they've experienced them frequently, like in densely populated cities or during travel. It's essential to recognize that the waiting experience can influence our perception of the event that follows.

    • Understanding the reasons behind people's behaviorsRecognizing social norms, personal experiences, and logical reasoning shapes our actions and can help us navigate social situations

People's behaviors, whether it's asking for baggage at an airport or merging lanes on the road, can be influenced by various factors including social norms, personal experiences, and logical reasoning. Matt shared an anecdote about asking for baggage at the airport, which was an unofficial law among kids. Rob reflected on the similarity of this experience to his own feelings about waiting in lines at airports. They both agreed that while the desire to get on the plane first isn't solely about getting a seat, but also about having enough space for one's bag in the overhead compartment. A, on the other hand, shared their experience of merging lanes on the road and the controversy it brings up. They argued that everyone should use all the available lanes and merge late, but the problem is not everyone knows this or follows it. The cultural norm and people's reactions can discourage this behavior. Overall, understanding the underlying reasons behind people's behaviors can help us navigate social situations and appreciate the complexities of human interactions.

    • Understanding the influence of social norms and efficiency on daily habitsConsidering the larger context and potential consequences of our actions can lead to energy savings and Pareto improvements, but prioritize safety and be aware of cultural norms.

Our daily habits and behaviors, even seemingly insignificant ones like opening a banana or crossing a street, can be influenced by social norms and the desire for efficiency. The discussion also highlighted the importance of considering the larger context and potential consequences of our actions. For instance, opening a banana from the bottom might seem unusual but could save energy in a larger context. Similarly, waiting for a slug of traffic to clear the road instead of making multiple cars stop can lead to a Pareto improvement. However, it's essential to prioritize safety and not put ourselves or others in danger. The conversation also touched upon the idea that traffic patterns and norms can change over time and vary from place to place. For example, in some countries, disregarding red lights when no other vehicles are present is the norm. Overall, the conversation emphasized the importance of considering the larger picture and being mindful of our actions and their potential impact on ourselves and others.

    • Individualism vs. Road Safety: Balancing PerspectivesPrioritize safety over individualism on roads, adhere to queuing orders, and explore AI's role in shaping the future while addressing diverse community needs.

While individualism is a cherished American ideal, it can sometimes clash with road safety, particularly when it comes to yielding the right of way during turns. This issue can lead to dangerous situations, especially when a driver's perspective is limited. A potential solution to this problem could be the implementation of a fully grid-mapped road system with a ban on left turns. However, this might not be a feasible solution. Instead, it's essential to prioritize safety and adhere to established queuing orders to avoid accidents. Moreover, the discussion touched upon the importance of technology, specifically artificial intelligence, in shaping the future. Intel's Technically Speaking podcast, which explores the role of AI in various industries, was highlighted as a valuable resource for understanding the potential of this technology. Lastly, the importance of addressing the needs of diverse communities, such as Detroit's black community, through reliable news sources like the Michigan Chronicle, was emphasized. Overall, the conversation underscored the importance of considering the potential risks and benefits of individual actions and technological advancements in various contexts.

    • Exploring Unique Perspectives and Experiences through Different Forms of MediaMedia offers diverse perspectives and experiences, from black voices and culture in The Michigan Chronicle to intelligent weapons in literature and fantasy, and free entertainment on Zumo PLAY, keeping audiences engaged and surprised.

There are various forms of media, such as The Michigan Chronicle and Zumo PLAY, that provide unique perspectives and experiences. The Michigan Chronicle focuses on elevating black voices, culture, and community stories, while Zumo PLAY offers free, endless entertainment with a diverse range of channels. In the realm of literature and fantasy, there exist sentient or intelligent weapons, like the one in J.R. Tolkien's "The Silmarillion" and in Chinese fantasy literature, which often have a strong connection to their users or makers. In popular culture, these weapons can be found in various media, like the TV series "The Untamed." Meanwhile, in entertainment, movies like "Deep Blue Sea" can surprise audiences with unexpected character deaths and plot twists.

    • Comparing Jurassic World to a Hannibal Lecter movie with dinosaursDespite initial disdain, the speaker found Jurassic World more tolerable when watched with her son and appreciated its unique take. She also recommended two Brad Dourif movies and praised his acting range.

The discussion revolved around the dislike for the movie "Jurassic World," with the speaker expressing her initial disdain but later finding it more tolerable when watched with her son. She also compared the more recent Jurassic World film to a Hannibal Lecter movie with dinosaurs and appreciated its unique take. The conversation also included recommendations for two Brad Dourif movies - "Mississippi Burning" and "The Wild Blue Yonder" - showcasing his acting range. The speaker expressed fondness for Dourif's work and mentioned his performances in these films. Regarding "Alien Resurrection," the speaker shared her dislike for the movie, finding it aesthetically nauseating, despite its talented cast.

    • Alien film franchise's production woes and creative differencesDespite production challenges and creative disputes, the Alien franchise delivers a mix of iconic sci-fi horror and entertainingly nonsensical films

The Alien film franchise, starting from Alien 3, has experienced various levels of production interference and creative differences leading to films with mixed quality. Jean Pierre Jeunet's Resurrection and Ridley Scott's Prometheus and Alien: Covenant were discussed, with the latter being particularly praised for its entertaining absurdity despite its narrative issues. The AVP films were also mentioned as an example of a different kind of "dumb" in the franchise. Overall, the Alien films showcase a range of creative visions and outcomes, with some delivering iconic sci-fi horror and others providing enjoyable yet nonsensical entertainment.

    • Imagining Horror Character ShowdownsListeners are invited to share ideas for horror character matchups on the Stuff to Blow Your Mind podcast, with potential discussions including Alien vs Chucky or Leprechaun.

The world of horror movies is vast and full of surprises. During a recent discussion on the Stuff to Blow Your Mind podcast, the hosts pondered the idea of pitting iconic horror characters against each other, such as an Alien versus Chucky or a Leprechaun. Although it's intriguing to imagine how these creatures would interact, the hosts acknowledged that some matchups might not make much sense, like a xenomorph dreaming of a wish from a leprechaun. Regardless, they encouraged listeners to share their thoughts and ideas for future episodes, which can be submitted via email. The podcast covers a range of topics, from core episodes to artifacts, Weird House Cinema, and listener mail, all available on the Iheartradio app and other podcast platforms. The hosts also thanked their audio producer, Seth Nicholas Johnson, and sponsors like Visible, Michigan Chronicle Digital Daily, Zumo Play, and Ebay Motors. So, keep the ideas coming, and who knows, your suggestion might become the next horror mashup discussed on Stuff to Blow Your Mind.

Often a monster movie comes with a level of suspension of disbelief.  At times, that level can be asking too much from an audience.  The movie SPRING, from film making duo Justin Benson and Aaron Moorehead, is not one of those movies.  The horror included doesn't ask you to check your brain at the door, nor is it too subtle or vague.  It is both quiet and visceral and accomplishes these tasks while telling a very human story.

Join Kevin and George as they take a romantic break and watch what is, essentially, a romantic comedy....with monsters.

EPISODE 52: Did I Stutter? (Star Wars: The Last Jedi)

EPISODE 52: Did I Stutter? (Star Wars: The Last Jedi)

"Whatever you do don't pull your punches!"

    --Kevin

Star Wars is known the world around.  It's pervasive and it's iconic.  The Busy Dads have watched the most recent entry into the Star Wars saga, THE LAST JEDI directed by Rian Johnson (Brick, Looper).  We share a bottle of seltzer and discuss whether or not it's possible for a movie called STAR WARS to actually NOT be STAR WARS.  We also talk about whether or not that really matters and how much are we going to try to NOT like something even in the face of floating, frozen people in space.

Come and listen to us overly dissect a movie that we both really enjoyed in order to please the inner fanboy that wants desperately to not like something that the higher self wants equally desperately to love.  Also, we make jokes about turning loveable Disney toys into sex dolls.  So, there's that.

Also, lets us know what YOU thought.  This was a divisive Star Wars movie and we want to know what you thought as well, listener.
