Amica Insurance focuses on personalizing policies and providing exceptional customer service. During the 2021 How I Built This Virtual Summit, entrepreneur Gary Vaynerchuk discussed his innovative approaches to marketing and branding, emphasizing the importance of passion and hard work in selling almost anything online. Overall, the discussions highlight the importance of prioritizing experiences, human connection, and innovation in various aspects of life.

    • Developing Entrepreneurial SkillsThrough hard work and experience, natural abilities and entrepreneurial skills can be developed and refined. Find what you enjoy and put in effort to improve.

Natural abilities and instincts are important in entrepreneurship, but they can be developed and refined through hard work and experience. Gary's experience with franchising his lemonade stand as a kid demonstrates the power of building relationships and understanding customer needs. However, not everyone may possess these natural abilities, but they can still become successful entrepreneurs through dedication and learning from experiences, such as Gary's work at his dad's liquor store or participating in baseball card shows. The key is to find what one enjoys and is passionate about, and to put in the effort to improve and develop skills in that area. Ultimately, the combination of natural abilities and hard work can lead to success in entrepreneurship.

    • Following passion for long-term successPassionately engaging in a niche can lead to valuable content, a large following, and monetization opportunities

Focusing on what you're passionate about, rather than just what might make you the most money quickly, can lead to long-term success. Gary Vaynerchuk, an entrepreneur and marketing expert, shared his experience of turning his dad's liquor business into a brand through content creation, which led him to write books and talk about making money online. He emphasized that deep interest and involvement in a community is essential for creating valuable content that resonates with an audience and can lead to monetization opportunities. Niches may not seem lucrative at first, but with dedication and creativity, even seemingly boring topics can become interesting and attract a large following.

    • Passion leads to profitable opportunitiesInvesting in a niche passion or hobby can lead to profitable business opportunities or content creation. Patience and education are key to success.

Having a deep passion or interest in a specific niche or hobby can lead to profitable opportunities, whether it's starting a business or creating content around it. The potential for monetization increases as the niche becomes more specific and has a larger following. For businesses looking to scale and grow, investing in content strategy and marketing is essential in today's digital landscape, despite the cost. Many successful businesses, like Policy Genius, have started with minimal resources but saw significant growth through content marketing efforts. It's important to remember that patience and education are key to making these strategies successful. Those who have tried and failed in the past may not have given it enough time or the right resources, but with the right approach, the potential for growth is significant.

    • Opportunity for low-cost brand building through social mediaBusinesses can save time and money by learning effective marketing strategies on social media platforms, democratizing brand building for all sizes.

The marketing landscape has evolved significantly, with intent-based marketing through search engines and social media platforms like TikTok democratizing brand building for businesses of all sizes. Traditional brand awareness marketing was once the domain of large corporations due to the high costs of advertising on television, print, and radio. However, the rise of social media has created new opportunities for low-cost brand building. For businesses with limited resources and time, the first step is to allocate time for education, utilizing free resources online to learn how to create effective content for various platforms. By reclaiming wasted time, businesses can dedicate valuable hours to learning and implementing effective marketing strategies. This vacuum of understanding in the market presents a significant opportunity for businesses to build their brand at a low cost.

    • Invest your time in creating your own content firstAs a small business owner, create your own content for the first 30 hours of the month to understand the process and save costs before hiring help.

As a small business owner, investing your time in creating your own content for the first 30 hours of the month is a practical and effective way to understand the process and make informed decisions about when to hire help or outsource social media work. This approach allows you to maintain control and potentially discover a new passion or skill. Gary Vaynerchuk, a successful entrepreneur, advocates for this strategy, having spent seven years producing his own content before hiring anyone. This not only gives you a deeper understanding of the content creation process but also saves costs until you're ready to scale your business.

    • Expertise, Escapism, and Charisma in Content CreationDeep understanding of topic, escapism through entertainment or interest, and charisma are crucial for creating engaging content. Building a strong business culture involves focusing on the right people, processes, and values to realize full potential.

Building a strong business culture and creating meaningful content are key to growing a successful business. Gary Vaynerchuk, a social media expert with a massive following, emphasizes the importance of expertise, escapism, and charisma in creating engaging content. He suggests that having a deep understanding of your topic or the ability to provide escapism through entertainment or interest are essential. Additionally, developing charisma, which can be a natural trait or learned through leadership and responsibility, can also help in building a following. To create a strong business culture, Insparity, a leading HR provider, offers insights on building a culture aligned with business goals. By focusing on the right people, processes, and values, companies can realize their full potential.

    • Find your preferred medium for growth and successConsistent practice and improvement in your preferred medium leads to personal growth and success.

Finding your preferred medium for communication and creation is essential for personal growth and success. If you're not naturally charismatic or comfortable on video or audio, consider focusing on writing. It's important to understand that scaling your ambitions requires effort and dedication, much like physical fitness. You don't have to be a superstar in every medium, but consistent practice and improvement will yield results. Remember, it's not about instant success, but rather about putting in the reps and making progress over time. Don't overexert yourself and risk burnout. Instead, find a sustainable balance between your creative pursuits and self-care.

    • Following passion and curiosity in businessGary Vaynerchuk sees business as a hobby driven by passion, curiosity, and legacy. He emphasizes the importance of following one's curiosity and giving back to entrepreneurship. TikTok's success in marketing is due to its ability to tap into people's curiosity and provide a unique experience.

Gary Vaynerchuk views business and entrepreneurship as a hobby and a passion, just like how some people view golf or skiing. He is driven by curiosity, legacy, and the thrill of the hunt, which he believes is more important than raw intelligence. He emphasizes the importance of following one's curiosity and giving back to entrepreneurship. When it comes to marketing, he thinks TikTok is doing it well, but not necessarily due to the work he does with them. Instead, it's due to the platform's ability to tap into people's curiosity and provide a unique experience. Overall, Gary's approach to business and marketing is rooted in his passion, curiosity, and a desire to leave a lasting legacy.

    • Breaking patterns and creating unique contentEffective marketing involves repurposing content, reaching younger demographics, using unconventional strategies, and providing value to audiences.

Effective marketing involves breaking patterns and creating unique, engaging content that resonates with audiences across various platforms. Nick Tran's work as CMO for TikTok is a great example of this, as the company successfully repurposes content from television commercials to reach a younger demographic on the platform. Facebook's success in building awareness around groups is another instance of this approach. Unconventional marketing strategies, such as Steakums' quirky Twitter account, can also be effective in catching consumers' attention and building brand loyalty. However, it's important to ensure that these unconventional approaches are not disruptive or annoying and provide value to the audience. Ultimately, marketing that stands out and catches people off guard in a positive way is more likely to be remembered and successful.

    • Surprise and integration are key elements in audience engagementGary Vaynerchuk uses creative methods to engage audience on social media, while intrusive ads and negative reality TV shows disrupt viewer experience

Surprise and integration are key elements in capturing and maintaining audience attention. Gary Vaynerchuk, as discussed in this episode of How I Built This, uses creative and unexpected methods to engage his audience, whether it's through song or sponsor shout-outs. Social media platforms, with their feed-based format, provide an ideal platform for this type of engagement, allowing for more seamless integration of content. Conversely, intrusive advertising can be a turnoff and disrupt the viewing experience. Similarly, in the world of reality TV, shows that isolate and berate contestants, like CBS's "Weird Lord of the Flies" and "The Swan," have failed to capture and maintain audiences due to their negative and disruptive approaches. Instead, successful shows find ways to surprise and integrate their content into the viewer's experience.

Spin Master/PAW Patrol: Ronnen Harary (2021)

Ronnen Harary built a 4 billion dollar toy company without relying on market research or focus groups. Instead, he believed wholeheartedly in intuition: the "ah-hah" moment that comes from thinking like a 7-year old. Over a 25-year period, he and his Spin Master partners launched innumerable hit toys and amusements, including Air Hogs, Bakugan, and the smash hit franchise PAW Patrol. Spin Master's journey began in the mid-1990s, when Ronnen and his friend Anton Rabie began selling the Earth Buddy, a chia-pet-like novelty gift made of pantyhose, sawdust, and grass seed. Today, it's a publicly traded company with a portfolio that includes TV shows, video games, and toys ranging from puzzles to plush.

    Dave’s Hot Chicken: Arman Oganesyan

Dave’s Hot Chicken began as a tiny pop-up, selling spicy chicken tenders and fries from a tent in East Hollywood. Their homemade take on Nashville Hot Chicken was an overnight sensation in a city that had barely heard of it, and within days, co-founder Arman Oganesyan and his partners were working frantically to serve the long lines out front. ECKO UNLTD and COMPLEX: Marc Ecko

ECKO UNLTD and COMPLEX: Marc Ecko

Growing up in the ‘80s in New Jersey, Marc Ecko loved hip hop, graffiti art, and painting t-shirts for friends. His passion soon bloomed into a full-on business: ECKO UNLTD, a streetwear brand known for its iconic rhino logo. By the 1990’s, the brand had become a cultural force, but not without its share of bad deals, daunting debt, and a close brush with bankruptcy.

Eager to keep innovating, Marc launched COMPLEX, a media company hyper-focused on “convergence” culture: hip hop, fashion, sports and pop culture. Within a decade, COMPLEX had weathered the financial crisis, and emerged profitable. After being bought–and sold–by Buzzfeed, it was purchased by a video shopping company for over $100 million, and ECKO UNLTD just celebrated its 30th anniversary.

Concept2 Rowing Machines: Dick and Peter Dreissigacker

Concept2 Rowing Machines: Dick and Peter Dreissigacker

Brothers Dick and Peter Dreissigacker used their experience as Olympic-level rowers to build a rowing machine that captured the sensation of being on the water. Initially made of bicycle parts in a Vermont barn, the machines had a limited market at first: mostly rowing clubs and schools that competed in the sport. But in the 2000’s, business began to take off when Greg Glassman, the founder of Crossfit, began putting the machines into his gyms. Today Concept2 sells rowing machines to thousands of gyms and teams around the world, plus rowers, stationary bikes and skiing machines for people who train at home.
