Possible Trump Indictment Is A Tricky Landscape For Rivals

    en-usMarch 25, 2023

    Podcast Summary

    • Manhattan DA investigates Trump over hush money paymentsThe Manhattan DA is investigating Trump for potential campaign finance violations related to hush money payments made during the 2016 election.

Former President Donald Trump is facing multiple legal challenges, including criminal investigations, impeachments, and lawsuits. The latest development involves an investigation by the Manhattan district attorney's office into hush money payments made during the 2016 election to Stormy Daniels. The payments, which were made from Trump's personal bank account, are being investigated for possible campaign finance violations. Trump's supporters argue that this is a political persecution, but legal experts believe that criminal charges could soon follow. Amidst this legal backlash, several Republican contenders, including Nikki Haley, Mike Pence, and Ron DeSantis, have declared or are considering running for the 2024 presidential race. The investigations and legal challenges against Trump are likely to impact his bid for a third term in the White House.

    • Republican Candidates Navigate Attacking Trump While Keeping BaseRepublicans Pence and DeSantis have different strategies to tackle Trump's indictment, with Pence avoiding direct confrontation and DeSantis taking a more direct jab, reflecting the party's ongoing conversation about Trump's moral issues and political future.

As the possibility of a Donald Trump indictment looms, Republican presidential candidates face a challenging landscape in trying to take him down without alienating his base. Mike Pence and Ron DeSantis, both presumed to be entering the race, have taken different approaches. Pence did not defend Trump directly but also did not offer a strong defense. DeSantis took a more direct jab at Trump, highlighting his moral issues, while trying to avoid a direct confrontation. This strategy reflects the Republican Party's ongoing conversation about Trump's image and his departure from the party's moral values. While an indictment could potentially impact Trump's political chances, it also presents a dilemma for his challengers, who must navigate the delicate balance of attacking Trump while maintaining support from his base.

    • Navigating the Trump Phenomenon in the GOPThe Republican Party is trying to appeal to their base with culture war issues while dealing with Trump's influence, who remains a dominant force with a large following and social media presence.

The Republican Party is attempting to establish a positive record on culture war issues, such as parental rights and transgender issues, to appeal to their base in the 2023 election. However, they are still grappling with the influence of former President Donald Trump, who remains a formidable force and a master at hijacking the national stage. Trump's supporters continue to show strong loyalty to him, despite controversies and criticisms from some Republican officials. In essence, the GOP is trying to navigate the Trump phenomenon, which includes his large following, social media presence, and ability to dominate the political conversation. Despite efforts to move past Trump, his impact on the party remains significant.

    • The Power of Mythology in Fascist Dream PoliticsMythology can distort facts and fuel deeply held beliefs, making it a potent tool in fascist dream politics. The death of Ashley Babbitt during the Capitol riots serves as an example of how easily disproven narratives can gain traction, and the importance of fact-checking in combating such myths.

That the current political climate has seen a shift towards embracing extremist ideologies, particularly on the right, where the abandonment of reason and democracy is more prevalent than in the past. This was a major reason why the speaker initially rejected such labels. The essay in the book explores the mythology surrounding the death of Ashley Babbitt during the Capitol riots, and how easily disproved narratives can still gain traction. The speaker was drawn to the idea that "you can't fact check a myth," and that the old American story of an innocent white womanhood threatened by a black man was being rewritten in the context of Ashley's death. The myth of innocence is a key part of the fascist dream politics, and this was evident in the exaggeration of Ashley's age and the creation of an idealized image of her. Overall, the discussion highlights the power of mythology and the challenges of fact-checking in the face of deeply held beliefs.

    • The Evolution of Trumpism into a More Dangerous FormTrumpism continues to gain momentum despite Trump's personal loss of power, with figures like DeSantis and Haley rising. The use of all-black flags and talk of civil war signals a growing dangerousness.

Trumpism, the political ideology associated with former President Donald Trump, is not losing power but rather evolving into a more dangerous form, according to Jeff Charlotte, a professor at Dartmouth College. While Trump may have lost some power personally, the movement continues to gain momentum, as seen in the rise of figures like Ron DeSantis and Nikki Haley. The use of all-black flags, a symbol of no mercy and the belief in an impending civil war, is a concerning sign of the growing dangerousness of Trumpism. It's important to recognize that Trumpism is not unique to the United States and that global threats to democracy are on the rise. This global fascist moment requires a nuanced understanding of the threats to democracy and a commitment to protecting democratic values.

Biden tries to reassure voters after a shaky debate performance

Biden tries to reassure voters after a shaky debate performance
The day after a debate in which he faltered many times, President Joe Biden hit the campaign trail to try and reassure supporters that he is still up for the job and capable of beating former President Donald Trump in November.

His performance in the CNN debate on Thursday led many Democrats to panic about his chances of winning reelection. Some commentators who have long supported Biden even called for him to step aside.

NPR's Scott Detrow speaks with NPR Senior White House Correspondent Tamara Keith and Congressional Correspondent Deirdre Walsh about what happens next and whether Biden can quell Democrats' fears.

Gun violence is getting worse. Is this the solution?

Gun violence is getting worse. Is this the solution?
The surgeon general's office has declared gun violence a national public health crisis.

It's the first time the body has ever issued a public health advisory about firearms, and for Surgeon General Vivek Murthy, it's a step in reframing the conversation about death by gunfire.

According to the CDC, more than 48,000 Americans were killed by gun violence in 2021, and over half of those deaths were by suicide.

Biden's executive actions on immigration send mixed signals

Biden's executive actions on immigration send mixed signals
In early June, President Joe Biden severely restricted asylum requests from migrants attempting to cross the U.S.-Mexico border without authorization.

Two weeks later, the President struck a more welcoming tone, saying he'd protect hundreds of thousands of undocumented immigrants married to U.S. citizens.

Immigration has become a big issue, for both parties. Policy experts say Biden hopes that in a close election year, these executive actions will sway voters to his side.

But will that strategy pay off and how will it affect migrants?

NPR's Adrian Florido speaks with immigration correspondent Jasmine Garsd who is reporting from the San Diego border with Mexico.

The U.S. election results will reverberate around the world

The U.S. election results will reverberate around the world
Polls – and NPR's own reporting – tell a story of many Americans fatigued by the upcoming presidential race. They're not satisfied with the choice between two men who have both already held the office of President.

But American allies and partners are watching the race intently, including South Korea, Japan, Ukraine and Israel. The fates of those countries are closely tied to whether Donald Trump or Joe Biden ends up sitting in the White House next year.

The NPR correspondents who cover those countries, Anthony Kuhn in South Korea, Joanna Kakissis in Ukraine, and Daniel Estrin in Israel, discuss the stakes each of those countries have in the outcome of America's presidential election.

Federal student aid still up in the air for many

Federal student aid still up in the air for many
This year's college application process was supposed to get easier.

That's because last year, the U.S. Department of Education announced changes to the Free Application for Federal Student Aid, or FAFSA.

The problems with the FAFSA form began last fall.

And with August and September around the corner, some applicants continue to experience technical issues.

Before this year, students would already know how much aid they're getting. But in 2024, not knowing, which is the case for many, could mean they can't go to college.
