    Podcast Summary

    • From small business to global brand: Raymond Klosterman's journey to happiness and successPassion for details, fragrance, ingredients, and design led Raymond to build a global brand, proving that happiness and success come from the present and small everyday rituals.

Happiness and success are interconnected, and they don't necessarily follow a linear path. Raymond Klosterman, the CEO of Rituals, shares his journey from starting a small business in a garage to building a global brand with over 850 stores and 3 million weekly visitors. Raymond's goal was to help people enjoy the little things in life and reinvent everyday routines. He challenged the market by offering luxury products at mid-price points and combining home and body care. Raymond's success came from his passion for details, fragrance, ingredients, and design, which he made accessible to everyone. The key takeaway is that happiness and success can be found in the present moment, and small everyday rituals can lead to bigger accomplishments. Raymond's story reminds us that it's never too late to pursue our passions and make a difference in people's lives.

    • Turning routines into rituals and offering a unique shopping experienceDespite challenges, staying true to your vision and connecting with customers can help you persevere in business. Focus on providing a unique experience and offering a lifestyle, not just a product.

Starting a business involves facing challenges and setbacks, but staying true to your vision and connecting with customers on a deeper level can help you persevere. The founders of Rituals, a rapidly growing European beauty brand, experienced a bumpy ride in their early years. They faced forgetting essentials on the first day, store break-ins, and slow growth. However, they remained dedicated to their concept of turning routines into rituals and providing a three-dimensional shopping experience. Even during tough times, they found motivation in their customers' positive reactions to their products and philosophy. The Rituals brand goes beyond just selling beauty products; it offers a lifestyle that encourages living mindfully and approaching beauty from the inside out. By focusing on the small, beautiful things in life and providing a unique experience, they were able to turn their dream into a successful business.

    • Discovering the power of ancient rituals in modern beautyBy incorporating mindfulness and intentionality into everyday activities, the founders of this beauty brand believe we can enhance the functionality and overall experience of their products and daily life.

The founders of this beauty brand designed their products with a personal passion and focus on ancient rituals, inspired by Asian practices. They believe that using their products as part of intentional, mindful moments can enhance the functionality and overall experience. This idea extends beyond just skincare; it applies to everyday activities like drinking coffee or orange juice. By paying attention to the details and enjoying the process, the founders argue that the benefits are greater. Their products are not just about selling beauty, but about sharing stories and inspiring consumers to slow down and appreciate the small moments in their daily lives.

    • Finding happiness in small moments and relationshipsSuccess and material possessions don't ensure happiness. Instead, joy comes from relationships, passions, and finding meaning in everyday life.

Success and material possessions do not guarantee happiness. Instead, finding joy in small moments and everyday things, as well as building strong relationships and living out one's passions, are the true sources of happiness. The speaker, who has experienced great success, emphasized that the initial happiness came from the camaraderie and adventure of the early years, but now finds fulfillment in seeing others embrace their philosophy and products. The speaker also noted that happiness can be found even in times of hardship and scarcity, and that it's not about the money or fame, but rather the feeling of living a meaningful life. The speaker's experience echoes the idea that happiness is an art and a mindset, and that it's possible to find joy in even the smallest things.

    • Cherishing small moments of happinessLiving passionately and authentically leads to happiness and success, and everyone should maximize their unique talents to make a positive impact on others.

Happiness and success are byproducts of living passionately and authentically, rather than being the primary goals. The speaker grew up with a belief in cherishing small moments of happiness and celebrating life, which has influenced their connection to a particular brand. They believe that everyone has unique talents and should strive to maximize them, leading to a fulfilling life and positive impact on others. During tough times, such as the pandemic, it's essential to stay true to oneself and continue contributing, as success will naturally follow. The speaker's philosophy is that success is an outcome of living passionately and making a difference, rather than a target to be pursued directly.

    • Adapting to unexpected challengesWhen faced with setbacks, find creative solutions to adapt and innovate, postpone investments, borrow money, and explore new initiatives to reach customers in new ways and keep the business alive.

When faced with unexpected challenges and setbacks, it's essential to accept the situation, regroup, and find creative solutions to survive and thrive. The speaker, who experienced the sudden closure of 850 stores and the loss of income for their company, shares how they and their team went from a state of panic and despair to finding the energy to adapt and innovate. They postponed investments, borrowed money, and started packing gift sets for medical staff, while also exploring new initiatives like VIP shopping and temporary partnerships with supermarkets. Through these efforts, they were able to reach their customers in new ways and keep their business alive. It's a reminder that even in the darkest moments, there's always an opportunity to pivot and find a path forward.

    • Navigating Challenges and Finding OpportunitiesDespite adversity, focus on solutions, maintain open communication, prioritize customer experience, and create positivity to turn challenges into opportunities for growth and connection.

Even in the face of adversity, such as a global pandemic, it's possible to make the best out of a difficult situation and bring people together. The speaker shared their experience of navigating the initial challenges of the crisis with their team, focusing on finding solutions and maintaining open communication. They found that by putting energy into making a difference and focusing on the things within their control, they were able to create a sense of positivity and resilience. The customer experience and making clients happy also emerged as a common theme, with the speaker emphasizing the importance of providing personalized, efficient, and human-centered services. By staying focused on these priorities, they were able to turn a challenging situation into an opportunity for growth and connection.

    • Creating a Positive Customer ExperiencePrioritize servicing people, create a welcoming atmosphere, and use unconventional training methods to identify and engage with genuinely interested customers for a memorable and positive shopping experience.

Creating a positive and authentic customer experience goes beyond just selling a product. The way customers are treated, the atmosphere of the store, and the genuine interest shown by employees can significantly impact how customers perceive a brand. The speaker shares an example of how their team members prioritize servicing people and making them happy, which in turn makes the products irresistible. They also discuss an unconventional training method called the "$1,000,000 customer," where an actor would play the role of a customer who would buy everything presented to them. This training helped employees to better identify and engage with genuinely interested customers, making the sales process more effective and enjoyable for both parties. Ultimately, the speaker emphasizes the importance of creating a memorable and positive customer experience to build brand loyalty and differentiate from competitors.

    • Raymond's business prioritizes people's happinessRaymond's approach to business focuses on making a positive impact on people's lives and creating a loyal community through prioritizing their happiness.

Raymond's approach to business goes beyond just making sales; it's about making a significant impact on people's lives. Raymond's commitment to making his team happy and spreading happiness to millions of customers every week is a testament to this. During their initial meeting, Raymond spent valuable time with the speaker, genuinely engaging in conversation and expressing his care for his team's well-being. This interaction inspired the speaker to help Raymond's team reach even more people with their happiness initiatives. Together, they launched a 14-day happiness challenge, aiming to reach thousands or even millions of participants worldwide. This challenge, open to both clients and non-clients, offered free resources like meditation and yoga exercises. By prioritizing people's happiness, Raymond's business not only attracts customers but also creates a loyal community.

    • Exploring new ways to spread happinessRaimo is passionate about spreading happiness and is exploring partnerships and personal initiatives to reach a larger audience. He believes that making a few people happier can have an exponential impact and plans to continue virtual meetings in the long term.

The speaker, Raimo, is passionate about spreading the philosophy of happiness and rituals, not just to customers who have purchased from his company, but to as many people as possible. He is exploring various ways to reach a larger audience, including partnerships and personal initiatives. Raimo believes that if everyone makes an effort to make just a few people happier, the impact can be exponential. He also shared that the COVID-19 pandemic has led him to appreciate the efficiency of virtual meetings and plans to continue this habit in the long term. Overall, Raimo's goal is to expand his business to new territories and continue spreading happiness through various means. He is excited about the potential of partnerships and collaborations to help achieve this goal.

    • Reevaluating work-life balance during the pandemicStrive for balance between work and family, avoid extremes, and incorporate daily happiness practices.

The COVID-19 pandemic has forced many of us to reevaluate our work-life balance, leading to a desire for more flexibility and time with family. However, we also miss the social connections and camaraderie of the office. The goal should be to strike a reasonable balance, avoiding the extremes of constant work and complete isolation. The power of rituals, such as daily happiness practices, should not be underestimated in achieving this balance. The pandemic may serve as a reset for many, allowing us to appreciate the simple joys in life and find happiness in the everyday. Remember, there is always time to slow down and focus on what truly matters.

Cathy is a former global sales executive (having held leadership positions at Dillard’s, Donna Karan, Estee Lauder and Avon, to name a few) turned entrepreneur. She is the founder of Increased Orbit, a strategic growth consulting company, where she uses her analytical, organizational and communication skills to help other leaders build sales, improve process, and motivate teams. She leads with integrity and wisdom, and I am so excited to share her insights with The Encourage Project community. Enjoy!

Sir Peter Vardy - The Secrets to Making Money and How to Use It for a Better World (and You)

Sir Peter Vardy - The Secrets to Making Money and How to Use It for a Better World (and You)
Today’s guest is Sir Peter Vardy, the British businessman and philanthropist who is one of the wealthiest men in the UK. Having had great success in the automotive industry, Sir Peter’s life as of quite some time has been focused on philanthropy through his personal foundation, the Vardy Foundation, which supports a wide range of community causes. He helped to fund the building of a City Technology College and three academies, which together form the Emmanuel Schools Foundation- a coalition of schools with a Christian ethos.

His foundation continues to make grants and provide support to a wide range of charitable causes including fighting homelessness and modern slavery, establishing hospitals and food banks, and providing education to children, for which he was granted a knighthood.

    Listen as we discuss:

    • How Sir Peter became one of the top automotive dealers in the world.
    • Focus on values,  not profit, for long-term success.
    • Engaging staff is critical to source good ideas and keep everyone happy.
    • You'll never be happy chasing money because you'll always want more.
    • Sir Peter left school at 16, but he decided to help build schools and save failing ones.
    • What are the secrets of making money?
    • "A vision without strategy is hallucination."
    • Sir Peter believes God has blessed him with so much wealth to help others.
    • Reforming the care system in the UK through an army of volunteers.
    • Money doesn't make you happy.
    • How Sir Peter lost his son at 5 years old, and delved into business hard.
    • Why don't all wealthy people give away money?
    • Look for what excites you or makes you angry, and do something about it.
