Clorox Scentiva brings new life to cleaning routines with its powerful cleaning abilities and refreshing coconut scent, transforming spaces into tropical getaways. Meanwhile, JCPenney empowers individuals to refresh their wardrobes with stylish and comfortable clothing options that cater to various body types, ensuring a perfect fit for every occasion. The NBA playoffs exemplify the excitement and intensity of playoff mode, while Ruth Richards' work on everyday creativity emphasizes the importance of fostering dynamic creative living for individual and cultural growth. Overall, these examples inspire us to embrace new experiences, whether in our homes, wardrobes, or personal growth, and to celebrate the unique aspects that make us who we are.

    • Embrace your everyday creativityBeing creative is a daily ability to adapt, find new ideas, and see the world in new ways, essential for getting through life's complexities.

Everyday creativity is our inherent ability to adapt, intuit, and find new ideas in our daily lives. It's not just about high achievement or specific fields, but rather about being original and seeing the world in new ways. We often get stuck in our routines and forget the importance of being creative, but it's essential for getting through the day and finding new paths. Our creativity keeps us alive and helps us navigate the complexities of life. As evolutionary biologist Theodosius Dobzhansky said, humans have phenotypic plasticity, which means we can adapt to various situations. By being aware of our creative potential and having the meta-awareness to realize we can change our actions, we can harness this power to improve our lives and find new solutions to challenges. So next time you find yourself in a rut, remember that creativity is not just for artists or high achievers, but for everyone, and it's worth embracing with a heart.

    • Cultivating Creativity in Everyday LifeCreativity is a vital aspect of life, not just the arts or sciences, and it's essential for survival and growth. Tools exist to assess and develop creative abilities, and it's never too late to tap into this potential.

Creativity is not limited to the arts or sciences, but rather it's a part of everything we do and experience in life. It's about originality, meaning, and new ideas, not just usefulness. Sadly, some people believe they are not creative because they cannot draw or paint, but creativity encompasses a wide range of abilities and expressions. Researchers have developed tools to assess the quality and quantity of creative work throughout one's adult lifetime, and it's important to recognize and value this potential in ourselves to keep evolving and adapting to new challenges. Creative thinking is essential for survival and growth, and it's never too late to tap into it, whether it's through writing a book, designing a home, or solving a complex problem. We should not limit our definition of creativity and miss out on the opportunity to develop and honor this vital aspect of our being.

    • Understanding the 4 P's of Creativity: Product, Process, Personality, and EnvironmentThe 4 P's of Creativity - Product, Process, Personality, and Environment - describe the tangible outcome, unique way of achieving it, personality traits, and environment that foster creativity.

Creativity is multifaceted and can be expressed through various means, from inventing new tools to having a unique process. The 4 P's of creativity are product, process, personality, and environment. Product refers to the tangible outcome, while process is the unique way of achieving it. Personality traits like faith and intuition play a crucial role in the creative process. The new book "Everyday Creativity and the Healthy Mind" explores these concepts further. During creative moments, individuals tend to be more open, aware, and able to see alternatives. These patterns suggest better ways of living and using the full capacity of our minds. While this can be seen as divergent thinking, it goes beyond that, involving our memories, imaginations, and even our collective unconscious.

    • Understanding Creativity through Nonlinear PsychologyNonlinear psychology highlights the interconnected nature of creativity and the human mind, emphasizing balance and inner wisdom while maintaining control.

Being visionary and creative involves going beyond ego issues and linear thinking. The creative person is able to balance many factors in a nonlinear way, as exemplified by the relationship between test anxiety and performance. This balance allows access to inner wisdom while maintaining executive control. The field of nonlinear psychology emphasizes the importance of complex and interconnected relationships in understanding creativity and the human mind. Creative individuals often challenge gender stereotypes and defy simple models of behavior. Additionally, there is a connection between certain family histories and creativity, but it is essential to focus on the health aspect, which involves the right balance of accessing inner wisdom and maintaining control.

    • Exploring Creativity and BalanceEmbrace creativity for better mindfulness and caring, but be aware of potential risks and maintain balance

Creativity involves being open, aware, flexible, and able to see alternatives while maintaining a balance between being less defensive and more connected to others and the world. This way of thinking can lead to a better, more mindful, and caring person. However, it's important to note that creativity can also have negative consequences, such as contributing to mental illness. The research suggests that exposure to mental illness can lead to a watered-down version of the condition in some individuals. The speaker shared their experiences of meeting various legends in the field during the 1960s, including Frank Barron and Carl Rogers, and discussed the importance of maintaining a balance between creativity and control. Overall, the conversation emphasized the importance of embracing creativity while being aware of its potential risks.

    • The connection between creativity and mental health is complexSome mental health conditions may offer subtle cognitive advantages for creativity, but proper treatment is crucial for individuals' well-being

While there is a potential link between creativity and certain mental health conditions like schizotypia, it's important to remember that this connection is complex and nuanced. It's not the case that being sicker leads to greater creativity. Instead, some people with these conditions may have subtle cognitive advantages that can be harnessed for creative thinking when in an adaptive context. However, these individuals often suffer greatly and need proper treatment. Research shows that creativity can serve a healing function in itself and that chaos, or unpredictability, can foster creativity and new insights. But it's crucial to remember that chaos isn't synonymous with anarchy or randomness; it's about the underlying order in change and surprise. Ultimately, we can create conditions that make creative insights more likely, but they don't just appear out of nowhere. Instead, they emerge from the complex interplay of various factors, some of which may be hidden from our conscious awareness.

    • Interconnectedness and the Butterfly EffectSmall events or actions can have significant consequences, and our world is interconnected in ways we may not fully understand. Embrace the unpredictability and creativity that comes with this interconnectedness.

Our world is intricately interconnected, and small events or actions can have significant, sometimes unforeseen, consequences. This concept is known as the butterfly effect. The speaker uses the example of an avalanche, which is caused by a combination of factors, not just one snowflake. Similarly, there are constant minor occurrences, like earthquakes, that are part of a larger system. Consciousness plays a role in this interconnectedness, as it can facilitate creativity and insights, but it can also get in the way. The speaker suggests viewing consciousness as a radio station with various modes, and some people may be able to tap into creative insights unconsciously. The speaker also mentions the concept of emergent phenomena, where the whole is greater than the sum of its parts. Ultimately, the speaker encourages us to embrace the interconnectedness of our world and the unpredictability that comes with it.

    • Brain patterns during moments of insight and creativityResearch shows distinct brain patterns during creativity, such as right-sided visual processing and decreased executive functions, allowing us to be more open to possibilities and explore new ideas.

Imagination and creativity are real and essential aspects of the human experience, and they are linked to specific brain activities and states. Researchers like Colin Martindale have found that during moments of insight and creativity, there are distinct brain patterns, such as right-sided visual processing and decreased executive functions. These states allow us to be more open to possibilities and explore new ideas. Imagination and creativity are not only individualistic but also have the power to heal and transform the world. As we continue to evolve as a species, it's important to explore new ways of thinking and working together, such as the group processes used in humanistic psychology and business, which include meditation and introspection to tap into deeper levels of consciousness and creativity.

    • Exploring higher creative potential through collaboration and open-mindednessSuccessful individuals and businesses embrace the future by combining ancient wisdom and Western science to unlock our full potential, fostering innovative ideas and a better future through collective efforts.

Successful businesses and individuals, like Aikido masters, embrace the future by exploring their higher creative potential in a collaborative and open-minded way. This approach goes beyond brainstorming and involves a deeper understanding of consciousness and wisdom. An exemplar of this mindset is Walt Whitman, who embodied a cosmic consciousness that points towards our higher potential. The Dalai Lama also recognizes the importance of combining Western science with ancient wisdom to unlock our full potential. This perspective expands our awareness, helps us go beyond our expectations and fears, and embraces new possibilities as real hope. Ultimately, this approach not only leads to innovative ideas but also fosters a better future through collective efforts.

Jenny Odell on nature, art, and burnout in quarantine

Jenny Odell on nature, art, and burnout in quarantine
One of my favorite episodes of this show was my conversation with Jenny Odell, just under a year ago. Odell, a visual artist, writer, and Stanford lecturer, had just released her book How to Do Nothing: Resisting the Attention Economy and we had a fascinating conversation about the importance of maintenance work, the problem with ceaseless productivity, the forces vying for our attention, the comforts of nature, and so much more.  A lot has changed since then. Odell’s book became a sensation: it captured a cultural moment, made it onto Barack Obama’s favorite books of 2019 list and became, for many, a touchstone. And then, a global pandemic hit, radically altering the world in ways that made the core themes of Odell’s work more prescient, and more difficult. What happens when, instead of choosing to “do nothing,” doing nothing is forced upon you? What happens when all you have access to is nature? What happens when the work of maintenance becomes not just essential, but also dangerous? So I asked Odell back, for a very different conversation in a very different time. This isn’t a conversation, really, about fixing the world right now. It’s about living in it, and what that feels like. It’s about the role of art in this moment, why we undervalue the most important work in our society, how to have collective sympathy in a moment of fractured suffering, where to find beauty right now, the tensions of productivity, the melting of time, our reckoning with interdependence, and much more.  And, at the end, Odell offers literally my favorite book recommendation ever on this show. And no, it’s not for my book.  References: My previous conversation with Jenny Odell on the art of attention "The Myth of Self-Reliance" by Jenny Odell, The Paris Review "I tried to write an essay about productivity in quarantine. Sara Bareilles: Anxiety, Anger, and Art

Sara Bareilles: Anxiety, Anger, and Art
Taming Anxiety Series - Episode 1: Today is a big day here on the podcast, both because we have a fantastic new episode, and because this episode is actually kicking off a series we have been wanting to produce for a long time, called “Taming Anxiety.”   Anxiety is a massive issue in our society. Even before the pandemic, it was on the rise. Now, the situation is even worse. Chances are it has afflicted you or someone you love at some point, on some level: maybe you’ve received an actual diagnosis, like generalized anxiety disorder, or maybe you’re prone to symptoms closer to panic, or perhaps you’re just susceptible to a bit too much garden-variety worrying. Maybe your kids are increasingly anxious. Or maybe, like me, you’ve got a few different items on the menu–some low-level professional freakouts here, some panic attacks in elevators (or on live TV) over there…   Anyway, the bad news is that anxiety is unlikely to disappear overnight. But the good news is that you can change your relationship to it. Hence this two week series we’re launching today. We’ve got two episodes with scientists and one episode with a meditation expert on deck to help you learn to tame your anxiety. And we’ve even got a free meditation challenge over in the Ten Percent Happier app to help you bring these lessons into your practice.   But before we get to that, let me introduce today’s guest. We’re kicking things off with a personal story. Sara Bareilles is a fearsome polymath: a singer, songwriter, composer, actor… the list goes on. She earned Tony and Grammy Award nominations for the Broadway musical Waitress, she’s got a new album out called Amidst the Chaos: Live from the Hollywood Bowl, and she stars in the new Tina Fey-produced series Girls5eva, which is streaming right now on Peacock.    Behind all this artistic and professional success is a meditator who is deliberately open and public about her struggles with anxiety and depression. In this conversation, she talks about: her history of anxiety and depression; the relationship between suffering and art, and whether meditation might defang someone’s creativity; how she works with anger; her relationship to social media; and we get an intimate glimpse into the back-stories behind some of her hit songs.   This is the first episode in our new “Taming Anxiety” series, and there will be an accompanying meditation challenge over in the Ten Percent Happier app. It’s also called “Taming Anxiety,” and it launches next week, on Monday, June 21st. The idea here is that you will be able to use the challenge to integrate everything you’ve learned in the podcast series into your neurons.    Join the Taming Anxiety Challenge by downloading the Ten Percent Happier app: https://10percenthappier.app.link/install. You should be prompted to join the Challenge after registering your account. If you've already downloaded the app, just open it up or visit this link to join: https://10percenthappier.app.link/TamingAnxietyChallenge.    Full Shownotes: https://www.tenpercent.com/podcast-episode/sara-bareilles-355 See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.
