Lessons Taken From Neuroscience, Motherhood & UltraRunning: Stretching Beyond What You Think Is Possible - Featuring Samantha Wilson, PsyD, LCSW

Sam Wilson didn't know anything as a child about the neuroplasticity or resilience of the brain but she did know that spending time with friends laughing and being out in nature created safe spaces in which to recover and process the challenges she faced at home due to family addiction.

Inspired to attend college by friends with a more conventional childhood, Sam realized that she had a fascination with how the brain works - not just with addiction, but in all aspects. Over time her deepening interest led to multiple degrees in psychology and neuropsychology, along with earning her board certification in clinical social work.

Sam jumped into a career of service, working at first in various intense situations including Child Welfare Services and the prison system.

When another person close to her began to struggle with addiction, Sam found herself again in the grip of overwhelm and despair. Then, a close friend suggested that she give herself a breath of fresh air by joining their group for an ultra marathon... also known as 'ultra running.'

The peace and path forward she discovered in pushing her body to go the extra mile (thousands of them, over time!) has been life-changing for Sam and has helped her through many other significant life passages and hurdles since that time!

Join us today for a powerful conversation about ultra running, always having a strategy, working with your mindset to achieve more than you thought possible, the power of friendship, motherhood & loss, neuroplasticity, and the infinite capacity of women at any age!

There's No Manual For Motherhood, Featuring Chanelle Neilson

There's No Manual For Motherhood, Featuring Chanelle Neilson

As a Mom of 5, Chanelle Neilson has learned a lot of things the hard way - because babies aren't born with instruction manuals and motherhood is one of those things we definitely get better at with practice.

Even now that two of her kids have become adults, there are still lots of new things to grapple with and figure out, like, what do you do when one of your newly adult kids is making a BIG life decision that's tricky to get on board with? (More on that in today's episode!)

Here's the twist - Chanelle is actually (fascinating story) a highly respected parenting expert in China where she's published a popular parenting book AND hosted a highly regarded podcast, for years, before deciding to start another podcast in the United States. With over 185 episodes, "Moms Who Know" has been widely beloved here in the USA and respected for its lens on topics like 'How To Be A Happier Parent,' and 'How To Make The Best Of Uncertainty.'

In this episode, we'll hear how Chanelle learned to balance motherhood with work, how she's managing her mindsets to deal with BIG changes in her family, and - most excitingly - Chanelle will tell us all about her dream for a 'someday' project, Mom University, a special event that she would like to host in San Diego, California where Moms would come together to relax, learn and make their 'new best Mom friend.'

The event (originally scheduled for 2024) has been postponed but the idea is wonderful and you'll love this inspiring episode!

Forever Changed By The Camino, Featuring Loni Bergqvist

Forever Changed By The Camino, Featuring Loni Bergqvist

In 2013, accomplished educator Loni Bergqvist was struggling with a difficult on-and-off-again relationship and questioning whether motherhood was even in her future.  Although her career was thriving, she felt stuck and confused about life outside of work.

Then, struck by inspiration in the middle of the night, she decided spontaneously to make the pilgrimage of a lifetime: walking the Camino Frances, a popular route of the Camino de Santiago de Compostela.

Loni wanted to discover important answers that could only be found through deep soul-searching, asking herself hard questions, and introspection. She intended to walk the 30-day journey alone, to get to know herself in a way she'd never done before.

However, on Day 14, Loni unexpectedly crossed paths with another pilgrim from Denmark with whom there was an immediate and undeniable connection.

Their love story ultimately spanned two continents and multiple countries, and is the stuff that best-selling novels & romantic movies are made of!

In this special, heart-warming holiday episode, podcast host Andrea Morton chats with Loni about her amazing life journey: from her 'free-range' childhood in Green Bay, Wisconsin... to her beautiful and inspiring love story... and, later, becoming a wife, a mother of 3 beautiful kids, and Founder/Partner at Imagine If, a Denmark-based organization that supports schools in reimagining education to bring engaging, personalized & meaningful learning experiences to all students.

Saying 'Goodbye For Now' To Our Older Teens

Saying 'Goodbye For Now' To Our Older Teens

Parents in midlife are often called on to say “goodbye for now” to our older teens as they begin launching into independent adult lives.

Whether our older teens are headed to university, their first job & apartment, military service, backpacking the world or even getting married, there is no official manual for how to say goodbye to children who are becoming adults.

For some parents letting go and saying 'adieu' is a joyful celebration; while for others it may be a painful, fraught process.

Podcast host Andrea Morton is about to experience all of this for the very first time as a midlife Mom, when she brings her 18 year old son to stay at his new university on the East Coast of the United States (as a college freshman).

Morton wonders, “Is there a ‘right’ way or ‘wrong’ way to let our older teens go?”

With the hope of better understanding how to navigate the big upcoming ‘drop-off’ with confidence and grace, she researches the topic and dives deeper into best practices for saying farewell to our older teens.

This episode shares a variety of thoughtful, fun recommendations from various professionals and college students for what may help ease this rite of passage for parents & older teens, and set everyone up for the “best” goodbye.
