    • A precious family photograph evokes strong emotions and connectionsPreserving family memories through old photographs can evoke strong emotions and connections, as seen in a story about a listener's cherished image of his mother and great-grandmother

The power of preserving family memories through old photographs can evoke strong emotions and connections. This week on the podcast, produced by the iLab at WBUR Boston, the hosts shared a story from Reddit about a listener named Alex from Ireland and his precious family photograph. The photo features his great-grandparents and his mother, with his mother as a baby, posing in an old Irish house. This is the only photo his mother has of herself as a child, making it incredibly valuable to her. The image also represents the only photo Alex's mom has of herself with her grandmother, who is lovingly holding and feeding her. The hosts discussed how the photograph serves as a reminder of the close bond between Alex's mother and her grandmother and the cherished memories they shared. This story highlights the importance of preserving family memories and the emotional impact they can have on us.

    • Restoring a Family Photo with Community HelpCommunity support and collective knowledge can breathe new life into old memories and restore precious photos.

The power of community can bring new life to old and seemingly lost memories. During a family dinner, a worn and damaged photo of a great-grandfather was discovered. The photo was in such poor condition that most of the faces were unrecognizable, and efforts to restore it seemed futile. However, the individual who found the photo turned to the Reddit community r/restoration for help. This online community is dedicated to restoring old photographs, and members were more than willing to lend their expertise to the cause. Despite initial doubts, the photo was gradually restored, bringing a long-lost family member back to life. This heartwarming story highlights the importance of community and the power of collective knowledge and effort in preserving precious memories.

    • Restoring Emotional PhotosFreelance illustrator Michelle Spalding dedicates her skills to restoring damaged photos, bringing emotional significance to the final product.

Michelle Spalding, a freelance illustrator and graphic designer from Colorado, dedicates her time and skills to restoring damaged photos for people who hold them dear. These photos often have creases, blurs, or stains, and the stories behind them are emotional and meaningful. One restoration project that Michelle is proud of involved a man who had only one photo of his mother, who had passed away in childbirth. The photo was in terrible condition, but Michelle spent hours carefully restoring it, filling in cracks and balancing shading. The process was meditative and time-consuming, but the end result was worth it. Michelle's restoration work was featured on Boredpanda, and she shared the story of working on this particular photo, emphasizing the importance of attention to detail and the emotional significance of the project.

    • Bringing old family photos back to lifeRestoring old family photos can be emotionally meaningful and surprising, completing the family album and bringing joy to loved ones

The careful and meticulous restoration of old family photos can bring them back to life in a way that is both surprising and emotionally meaningful. The speaker was left in awe when they saw the restored version of their great grandfather's face in a family photo, and the accuracy of the restoration left them and their mother feeling flabbergasted. The reaction on Reddit was similarly positive, with over 90,000 upvotes. For the person whose photo was restored, it felt like a missing piece had been put back into place, completing the family photo album. The speaker expressed their gratitude to the restorer for the time and effort they put into the project and for the joy it brought to their mother. Old photos hold a special place in our lives, and the restoration process can help us appreciate them even more, especially in an age where photos are taken so frequently that they may not be cherished as much.

    • The Power of Nerd CommunitiesNerd communities bring people together through shared interests, fostering connection, growth, and learning.

The importance of community and connection, even in the context of a niche interest or hobby like being a "nerd." Despite the seemingly isolating nature of the term, the speakers emphasized the significance of coming together with like-minded individuals to share knowledge, passion, and experiences. This sense of belonging and connection was highlighted in their use of terms like "fellow nerds" and "most deaf," suggesting a shared language and understanding that transcends traditional barriers. While the group may be small and specific, it's a reminder that every community has the power to bring people together and foster growth and learning. We'll continue exploring this topic in our next episode. Until then, keep exploring and connecting with your own communities, nerds.

Gen Z wants you to take political action, one TikTok at a time

Gen Z wants you to take political action, one TikTok at a time

Gen Z is over it. The youngest generation of adults is inheriting a climate crisis, the ongoing fallout from a global pandemic, a polarized political landscape, and a tenuous economic reality.  And many Gen Z members, a generation more likely to identify as progressive than conservative, are ready for something to give.

Enter: Gen Z for Change — a youth-led non-profit that brands itself as, "the place where the creator economy and progressive politics intersect on social media." The group leverages a hundreds-deep network of social media creators to spread calls to action over TikTok. They've also pulled on the programming expertise within their team to develop a caché of semi-automatic tools that take the guesswork out of engaging with their political agenda.

Their latest tool, "Ceasefire Now!!" takes these efforts one step further — resulting in, by Gen Z for Change's count, two million emails calling for a ceasefire in Gaza hitting the inboxes of elected representatives in Washington every day.

    The Jackie Show

Our interactions with nature are increasingly mediated by technology. We scroll through wildlife feeds on TikTok. We use Instagram to plan hikes. Even in the wilderness, we religiously bring our phones to document the experience. And then there are animal cams.

Since the 1990s, people have fawned over livestreams of cute pandas and colorful fish. One could argue that animal cams another example of how we’ve jammed a screen between ourselves and the wild. But the story of Jackie the bald eagle presents a different perspective: one in which technology might bring us closer to our fellow creatures.

How Josh LaJaunie Lost 200+ Pounds & Reinvented Himself: Thoughts On Mindset, Habits & Giving Back
I have never met a more inspirational everyman example of healthy, transformative living than Josh LaJaunie. After 400+ episodes of the podcast, our initial conversation way back in December of 2013 (RRP 63) remains one of my favorite and most popular episodes in the history of the show, followed closely by our second conversation in June 2015 (RRP 152). There's a reason for that. Sure, Josh lost 200+ pounds. He overcame tremendous obstacles to restore and maintain his health. He reinvented himself as athlete, crushing marathons, winning an ultra and even gracing the cover of Runner's World magazine. You might have seen Josh on The Today Show. Perhaps you caught him on Good Morning America. Certainly, Josh's personal triumphs are worthy of celebrating. But I'm emphatic it's his giant heart that captured the the media's eye. 100% genuine and utterly authentic, it's Josh's love and devotion to returning the gift in service of his friends, family, community and strangers that sets him apart — and makes me prouder than you can imagine to call him friend. Good things happen to good people who do good for others. For those new to the show, Josh's story — as laid out in his self-described manifesto — begins in marshy southern Louisiana. A self-avowed “swamp dweller” from Bayou Lafourche, he was a big kid surrounded by an even bigger loving family, united by their shared adoration of food. Despite being recruited to play college football, college life left him so disillusioned, he dropped out, returning home aimless and unmoored. He found work in the family construction business, but like so many, started living for the weekend: partying, hunting, fishing, cheering for his beloved New Orleans Saints, and feasting on his favorite local delicacies — po boys, jambalaya & barbecue. Lots of barbecue. It's just what you do down in Bayou Lafourche. It wasn't long before Josh tipped 400+ on the scale. Outwardly he seemed fine with it. But deep down he was dying — his despair, embarrassment and shame escalating in lockstep with his declining self-esteem and overall well being. Then something happened. In 2010, Josh's beloved Saints achieved the impossible, winning the Super Bowl. It seems a small thing. But to Josh it was everything. Forever altering his perception of what is possible, he began to question the limits he imposed upon himself. Empowered, he began to “let go of his normal” and dismiss the embedded “that's just the way it is down here” mentality he was starting to understand often taints the logic of his region. A chain reaction of events ensued that set Josh on a path that literally changed everything. He adopted a 100% plant-based diet. He resumed a long, slow return to fitness. He committed to a top-to-bottom mindset shift. It wasn't overnight, but today he has multiple marathons under his belt. An ultramarathon victory. And a plan to scale the principles that saved his life to save others via his Missing Chins secret Facebook group and newly-hatched WellStart wellness start-up. The best part? It's just the beginning. Picking up where we last left off, this is Josh's story. Enjoy! Rich
