There have been significant developments on multiple fronts in the United States. In the realm of education, student protests continue with dozens arrested at Columbia University and City College of New York. Protesters are demanding a ceasefire in Gaza and for universities to cut ties with Israel. Elsewhere, former President Donald Trump was held in contempt of court for violating a gag order in his New York criminal trial. In the social and political sphere, a 6-week abortion ban took effect in Florida, following a confirmation from the state Supreme Court. These stories illustrate ongoing social and political tensions in the country.

    • New Abortion Laws and Progress in Marijuana ReclassificationNew abortion laws limit access to healthcare in the Southeast, while marijuana is reclassified as a lower risk drug, potentially expanding medicinal use and boosting industries in legal states. Former Art Institute students receive $6.1 billion in debt relief, and schools persist in restricting cell phone use in classrooms.

Restrictive abortion laws in the Southeast, like Florida's recent 6-week ban, could significantly limit access to necessary healthcare for pregnant individuals, potentially impacting those with desired but incompatible pregnancies. Elsewhere, there's progress on other fronts: the Biden administration is moving to reclassify marijuana as a lower risk drug, which could expand medicinal use and boost industries in legal states. Additionally, former Art Institute students with defrauded student loans will receive $6.1 billion in debt relief, marking a significant initiative from the administration. Despite these developments, schools continue to find ways to restrict cell phone use in classrooms. These stories highlight the ongoing debates and changes in various policy areas.

    • Phone pouches in schools reduce disruptions and shorten bathroom breaksThe implementation of phone pouches in schools has resulted in fewer disruptions and shorter bathroom breaks, leading to improved focus and learning for students.

The use of phone pouches in schools has led to a decrease in disruptive behaviors and shorter bathroom breaks among students. A Connecticut middle school introduced this policy in December, initially facing backlash, but now reporting positive results. Additionally, the mystery of ancient Roman dodecahedrons continues to intrigue archaeologists, with around 130 of these objects discovered in Northwestern Europe. Their purpose remains unknown, and theories range from religious or ritual objects to candleholders or dice. While their function remains a mystery, these intriguing artifacts offer a glimpse into the past and the unique practices of the Roman Empire's northern fringes. Where's the Millennial Middle Class?

    Where's the Millennial Middle Class?
It’s a bit of a trope that the millennial generation has had a rough go of it, economically.  After experiencing the Great Financial Crisis during their formative years, attending higher education during a massive debt-fueled student loan bubble, and entering adulthood while home prices were juiced higher and higher, the majority of millennials are now “behind pace,” financially speaking. In 2015, Pew Research conducted an interesting survey: It found that 89% of Americans considered themselves middle class. The survey then attempted to break down what middle class wealth actually looks like, landing on a median net worth of around $125,000 in today’s dollars.  I was curious how many millennials had surpassed that threshold, and as it turns out, the answer is…not many. This episode was inspired by headlines about the impending “Great Wealth Transfer,” often positioned as a solution to millennials’ money woes. But will it be? Let’s dig in.
