    • Leading the way in tech apparel and cancer researchOn Labs in Zurich innovates with high-performance running apparel and commitment to sustainability. Vegan diet may reverse prostate cancer progression and suppress cancer growth in lab experiments.

Technology in apparel is often overlooked but can significantly impact performance. On Labs in Zurich is leading the way with next-gen premium fabrics and a heightened level of sophistication, precision, testing, and development. Their high performance running apparel, such as long tees, weather jackets, and climate jackets, are lightweight, tailor-fit, built to move, and gorgeous. On is also committed to increasing product sustainability and offering exclusive discounts. Another key takeaway is the potential of using nutrition to deal with cancer. Dr. Michael Greger shared that a vegan diet has been shown to reverse the progression of prostate cancer in certain circumstances, such as at the early stages or end of care. While more research is needed, these findings offer hope for those dealing with this disease. The Pritikin Foundation conducted experiments showing that vegan diets can suppress cancer growth in a petri dish, highlighting the potential of nutrition in cancer treatment.

    • Impact of plant-based diet and exercise on cancer cell clearanceA plant-based diet and regular exercise can significantly impact cancer cell clearance and induce apoptosis in 2 weeks, potentially preventing and reversing various health conditions.

A plant-based diet, coupled with regular exercise, can have a significant impact on cancer cell clearance and inducing apoptosis (cell death) in as little as 2 weeks. This dietary change can lead to the prevention and reversal of various health conditions, including chronic pain and autoimmune diseases. However, the lack of comprehensive nutrition education in medical schools and the current healthcare system setup may hinder the widespread dissemination of this information. With only a quarter of medical schools offering a single course in nutrition and doctors graduating with an average of 4 hours of nutrition training, it's no wonder that many doctors are not well-versed in using diet as a tool for healing.

    • Influence of Pharma and Food Industries on Nutrition Education in Medical SchoolsPharmaceutical and processed food industries impact medical education by sponsoring continuing ed and influencing dietary guidelines, leading to a lack of robust nutrition education for doctors and negative public health consequences.

The lack of robust nutrition education in medical schools is influenced by various factors, including the influence of the pharmaceutical industry and the processed food industry. Pharmaceutical companies often sponsor continuing medical education for doctors, creating a financial incentive for doctors to focus on prescription drugs rather than nutrition. The medical industry's opposition to legislation requiring more nutrition education for doctors further highlights the issue's severity. The processed food industry also plays a role by funding advertisements and influencing dietary guidelines to keep people confused about nutrition. Marian Nestle's book "Food Politics" provides insight into how these industries manipulate nutrition information. Overall, the medical industry's lack of focus on nutrition education is a significant issue with far-reaching consequences for public health.

    • The power of confusion in health informationCritically evaluate sources, make informed decisions, and focus on emotions for positive change.

The constant confusion surrounding health information, whether it's about tobacco, nutrition, or other topics, can be used to our disadvantage by those who profit from our uncertainty. This was seen with the tobacco industry's use of doubt as a product. Similarly, in nutrition, conflicting messages can lead to apathy and unhealthy choices. To combat this, it's crucial to critically evaluate sources of information, including funding, and make informed decisions based on the best available data. Another takeaway is the idea of shifting our focus from making rigid resolutions to embracing our desires and feelings. Instead of setting hard goals, we can aim to experience more connection, love, creativity, and health. This approach requires introspection and tapping into our emotions rather than relying solely on our minds for structure. This heartfelt, magnetic way of being can be a more powerful means of attracting positive changes into our lives.

    • Embrace the journey withinTrue change requires self-generated impulses, self-acceptance, and faith in the divine plan

True change comes from within and requires a strong self-generated impulse driven by pain or pressure. New Year's resolutions may not lead to sustainable change unless the desire to change comes from deep within oneself. Instead of focusing on external changes, it's essential to do the interior work first. Accepting and embracing one's current situation, with faith in the divine plan, can serve as a foundation for growth and transformation. By starting from a place of self-acceptance and love, one can then take detached, spontaneous actions aligned with their highest vision of being and living.

    • Identifying and aligning with our heart and soulSelf-acceptance is crucial, but acknowledging areas for improvement and aligning actions with our heart and soul's message leads to a fulfilling life. Learn to master your thoughts through books like 'The Power of Now' to live in the present and connect with your true self.

Self-acceptance is a crucial first step towards personal growth, but it's also important to identify and acknowledge areas for improvement from the heart. The heart contains the divine message and our soul message, and resolutions can help us align our actions with our true selves. However, it's essential to remember that we are not our minds and that our thoughts don't always serve us. To make this distinction, Eckhart Tolle's book, "The Power of Now," is recommended. By understanding that we have control over our thoughts and learning to master them, we can change our lives and set goals that truly resonate with who we are. Ultimately, connecting to our hearts and aligning our actions with our soul's message is the key to living a fulfilling life.

    • Connect with your authentic self to determine the right goalsHonesty with ourselves about mistakes and learning from them is crucial for achieving goals

Being connected to your authentic self and heart is crucial in determining the right goals and resolutions for your life. If you're unsure of who you are or where you're supposed to go, it may not be the goal you're supposed to pursue. Disappointments and setbacks are inevitable, even for accomplished athletes like Chris McCormack. However, it's how we deal with these disappointments that shapes our character and ultimately leads us to success. Being honest with ourselves about our mistakes and learning from them is essential in moving forward and achieving our goals.

    • Lessons from Failure in Ironman RacesSetbacks and failures are inevitable in the journey to success, but they can provide valuable lessons and opportunities for growth. Stay determined, focused on goals, and seek support to overcome challenges.

Experiencing setbacks and failure is a natural part of the journey to success. The speaker in this discussion learned this lesson the hard way through his multiple attempts and failures in Ironman races. He believed that his lack of experience and understanding of nutrition were the reasons for his failures. However, even after winning several races, he continued to face challenges, including the harsh conditions in the Ironman World Championship in Kona. Despite his setbacks, the speaker remained determined to finish the race and improve himself. He began working with mental health professionals and focusing on the mental aspects of triathlon. However, he continued to face challenges, including a DNF in 2003. It was during this time that the speaker met Mark Allen, who encouraged him to stay in the race and observe how it unfolded. Allen's perspective helped the speaker realize that he was not alone in his struggles and that setbacks are a normal part of the journey to success. The speaker ultimately learned that it was important to stay focused on his goals and keep pushing forward, even in the face of adversity. The speaker's experiences demonstrate that setbacks and failures are inevitable, but they can also provide valuable lessons and opportunities for growth. It's important to remain determined, stay focused on your goals, and seek out the support and resources you need to overcome challenges and continue moving forward.

    • The importance of enjoying the process and racing your own eventFocusing too much on winning can lead to neglecting personal growth and enjoyment. Embrace the process, commit fully to training, and race your own event for personal success.

Focusing too much on the goal and winning at all costs can lead to neglecting the personal challenge and enjoyment of the triathlon experience. The speaker learned this valuable lesson from an amateur athlete who showed the true spirit of the sport. This mindset shift allowed the speaker to embrace the process and race their own event, leading to personal growth and success. Mark Allen, a mentor and idol, further emphasized the importance of a full year commitment to preparing for a race like Ironman Hawaii, rather than overracing and trying to win every event.

    • Adapting to new challenges in racingStay open to new ideas and be willing to adapt to succeed in competitive fields, whether it's triathlon or ultra running.

Being adaptable and open to new ideas, even when it means reinventing yourself, is crucial for success in any competitive field, be it triathlon or ultra running. For the speaker, a shift in focus from being an aggressive biker to trusting his marathon led him to new heights in triathlon. Similarly, for ultra runner Michael Arnstein, pushing beyond his marathon goal led him to the challenge of ultra running. Confidence, patience, and trusting the advice of others played key roles in their transformations. The racing landscape is always evolving, and being able to adapt and evolve with it is essential for continued success.

    • Plant-based diet supports high-performance athleticism and quick recoveryUltra-marathon runner achieves impressive times on plant-based diet, emphasizes nutrient-dense foods, and encourages returning to nature for a more natural way of eating

A plant-based diet not only supports high-performance athleticism but also allows for quick recovery. The speaker, an ultra-marathon runner, has consistently improved his performance each year on this diet, achieving impressive times in 100-mile races and marathons. He also emphasizes the importance of eating nutrient-dense foods and rejects the need for complex supplementation or laboratory testing. While the idea of a plant-based diet may seem extreme compared to typical industrialized culture diets, the speaker encourages stepping out of that matrix and returning to nature for a more natural and potentially less expensive way of eating.

    • Discovering Sustainable Health through Natural, Locally Grown ProduceFocus on natural, locally grown fruits and veggies for a healthy, sustainable lifestyle. Consider long-term sustainability of food sources as population grows. Avoid extreme diets like low-carb that may harm the planet.

A sustainable and healthy way of life can be found in consuming natural, locally grown fruits and vegetables, as observed in rural communities where resources are limited. This approach not only supports good physical health but also has environmental sustainability. However, it's essential to consider the long-term sustainability of our food sources, especially as the global population continues to grow. The trend towards low-carb or no-carb diets, while effective for weight loss, may not be the most sustainable solution for our planet, as it often involves consuming large amounts of animal products or processed foods. Ultimately, it's crucial to focus on finding the most optimal, sustainable, and morally sound food sources for our health and the future of our planet.

    • Change from withinTrue change is sustainable when driven by internal desire and supported by a strong network.

Personal change, whether it's related to health or lifestyle, is most sustainable when it comes from an internal desire. The speaker in this conversation acknowledges the importance of B12 supplementation due to her diet, but also recognizes that true change comes from within. She also emphasizes the significance of having a strong support system, like a loving partner, in making and sustaining positive changes. The conversation also touches upon the challenges of sobriety and the importance of finding new ways to manage emotions without relying on external substances. Ultimately, the speaker's message is that true change requires a deep commitment and a strong internal motivation.

    • Everyone's recovery journey is uniqueBe open-minded to various recovery methods, as what works for one may not work for all, and support individual's choices for a fulfilling life free from addiction

Everyone's journey to sobriety and recovery is unique and requires different approaches. The speaker shares his experience of finding success in a 12-step program, but acknowledges that others may find success through alternative methods, such as therapy or support groups. He emphasizes the importance of using the tools learned in recovery and the dangers of being labeled or pressured into a specific way of doing things. The speaker expresses support for any method that helps individuals live more fulfilling lives, free from addiction. He also reflects on the importance of humility and allowing others to help in the recovery process. Ultimately, the key takeaway is that there is no one-size-fits-all solution to addiction and recovery, and it's essential to be open-minded and supportive of different approaches.

    • Addictive Behaviors: Food, Anger, and BeyondAddictive behaviors, like food addiction and anger, can significantly impact our lives and require recognition and modification for a healthier lifestyle.

Addictive behaviors, such as unhealthy eating or gambling, can be just as powerful and damaging as substance addictions. The speaker shares personal experiences and anecdotes, highlighting how addiction can manifest in various forms and how it can impact individuals' lives profoundly. The speaker also emphasizes the importance of recognizing and addressing these behaviors to lead a healthier and more manageable life. The speaker's friend's struggle with food addiction is an example of how addiction can persist even after removing the substance, and the need for modification in behavior patterns. The speaker shares his own experiences with anger and the importance of recognizing and being prepared to deal with it, emphasizing the importance of growth and self-awareness in overcoming addictive behaviors.

    • From jobless to father and athlete: A journey of personal growthHealthy relationships, becoming a parent, and facing challenges can lead to personal growth, resulting in a more present and complete person.

Personal growth is a lifelong journey filled with challenges and continuous improvement. It involves making significant steps such as eliminating addictions, but progress can be elusive as new challenges emerge. The process requires dedication, self-reflection, and a willingness to face hardships. Asher Gunzberg shares his experience of transforming from someone who couldn't hold down a job to becoming a father and an athlete. He attributes this transformation to being in a healthy relationship, which provided him with a sense of grounding and purpose. Being a father, in turn, gave him focus, direction, and a deeper sense of responsibility. Despite the challenges, Gunzberg emphasizes that the rewards are worth it, as personal growth leads to becoming a more present and complete person.

    • Exploring new perspectives in motherhoodObserving others' parenting styles and challenging the status quo can lead to personal growth and unexpected benefits in motherhood

Having children doesn't mean an end to the things you love or your personal growth. Instead, it can enrich your experiences and challenge you to see things from new perspectives. The speaker shares how living with a friend's family and observing their parenting style helped redefine their relationship to motherhood. Similarly, their decision to homeschool their kids, although outside their comfort zone, has led to unexpected benefits. It's essential to ask hard questions, challenge the status quo, and be open to new experiences for personal growth and potential quantum leaps. The speaker's relationship with Julie, who comes from a different background and encourages unconventional thinking, has been a significant influence in this mindset.

    • Questioning authority and challenging the status quoPersonal growth and empowerment can come from stepping out of comfort zone and pursuing passion despite obstacles

Challenging the status quo and questioning authority can lead to personal growth and empowerment. This was evident in Julie's story, which inspired the speaker to reevaluate his own choices in life. The decision to leave behind a successful legal career to spread a message of positivity and resilience was a significant leap, but one that the speaker felt compelled to make. This determination and ability to overcome obstacles is similar to the endurance required for extreme sports, but in this case, it's being used to make a difference in people's lives. The speaker's newfound passion and enthusiasm for spreading this message is his "ultramatic," replacing the drive he once had for competitive racing. It's not an easy path, but one filled with satisfaction and purpose.

    • Small changes can lead to big shifts in lifeTake small steps towards goals, build financial stability, learn to say no, and consider the impact of diet on consciousness and energy.

No matter where you are in life or what seems to be holding you back, you have the power to make a change. Asher spoke about his own experiences of making a leap and committing to a new path, even when it meant letting go of something familiar. He emphasized the importance of taking small steps towards your goals, building a foundation for financial stability, and learning to say no to opportunities that don't align with your long-term vision. John Joseph, an Ironman triathlete, vegan, and punk rock musician, shared his personal experience of how changing his diet led to a transformation in his consciousness and energy levels. He encouraged listeners to give it a try and see the effects for themselves. Overall, the message is that small changes can lead to big shifts in your life, and it's never too late to start.

    • Eliminate animal products and take inventory for higher vibrationsExtricate yourself from external influences, question choices, apply self-responsibility, gain clarity, and take action for authentic living

Eliminating animal products from your diet and taking inventory of your life are key steps towards achieving higher vibrations and authenticity. The constant bombardment of lower vibrations from media and external sources can trap us in the illusion of the rat race. By extricating yourself from these influences, questioning your choices, and applying self-responsibility, you can gain clarity on your purpose and live more authentically. The knowledge gained from this process is not enough without action. It's important to apply the knowledge and make conscious decisions from a place of power and awareness. Remember, you can't stay stuck on stupid.

    • Triathlon training as a path to personal growthTriathlon training, with its rigorous demands and positive focus, can lead to personal growth and a higher state of consciousness.

Overcoming challenges and channeling energy into positive pursuits, such as triathlon training, can lead to a higher state of consciousness and personal growth. The speaker, inspired by athletic role models from his past, began his triathlon journey with the support of a mentor who helped him embrace the mindset of perseverance and dedication. This regimented approach to life, filled with training, writing, and service, allows him to avoid negative influences and stay focused on positivity. The speaker's daily practices, including chanting and giving back, reflect a functional form of gratitude and inspire him to continue pushing himself towards personal growth.

    • Humans are herbivores, not carnivoresRecognize our modern abundance of plant-based foods and embrace a healthier herbivorous diet

Our biology and dietary needs differ significantly from those of animals like dogs or lions, who are true carnivores. According to David, despite common beliefs, humans are herbivores, as evidenced by our mouth structure, digestive system, and enzyme production. The paleo diet, which advocates eating like our ancestors, has been misconstrued, as our ancestors likely relied on plant-based foods for their daily sustenance. It's important to recognize that our modern age offers an abundance of fruits, vegetables, and other healthful plant-based foods, allowing us to evolve and improve our health rather than adhering to a primitive, meat-heavy diet.

    • The Paleo Diet's Accuracy and Healthfulness QuestionedAncient diets may not perfectly match the paleo diet, beans are beneficial, lectins can be neutralized, and lower iron levels could contribute to longevity

The paleo diet, which emphasizes avoiding processed foods and focusing on meats and vegetables, may not be as accurate or healthful as previously thought. The speaker points out that ancient animals, which the paleo diet aims to emulate, likely had different nutrient profiles due to their grass-eating habits. Additionally, the avoidance of beans, a staple in many healthy diets, is criticized as misguided, as they are rich in nutrients and have been shown to be beneficial in various blue zones studies. The speaker also discusses the misunderstanding surrounding lectins, which are plant compounds sometimes labeled as "antinutrients," but can be neutralized through cooking and soaking. Furthermore, recent research suggests that lower iron levels, which some paleo diets may inadvertently promote, could actually contribute to longevity and better health. The speaker encourages a more nuanced and open-minded approach to dietary choices, emphasizing the importance of considering the latest scientific research and individual needs.

    • Grapes and Diabetes: Separating Fact from ConfusionGrapes, despite their sugar content, may help lower diabetes rates due to slow release of sweetener. Contrarily, meat consumption increases diabetes risk due to inflammation and insulin resistance. Preventative measures include lifestyle changes, expert advice, and understanding human dietary needs.

Grapes, despite being high in sugar, offer a slow release form of the sweetener and have been linked to lower rates of diabetes in a recent study. Contrarily, meat consumption, which creates inflammation and insulin resistance, is a significant contributor to diabetes. It's crucial to separate facts from confusion and rely on expert advice or thorough research. Meanwhile, the importance of preventative medicine extends beyond early diagnosis and includes lifestyle changes that can positively impact health, economy, and the environment. For instance, understanding that humans are herbivores and thriving as such can lead to numerous benefits. Additionally, high-risk activities like tandem cycling require immense commitment and the ability to transcend fear.

    • Experiences of competing in the Olympics in high-risk sportCompeting in the Olympics brings inherent dangers and challenges, but good mentorship and public support can help athletes overcome them. Athletes can discover their physical limits and encounter unexpected experiences, including terrorism.

Participating in the Olympics, especially in a high-risk sport like tandem sprint cycling, comes with inherent dangers and challenges. The speaker shared his experience of a near-crash during training and the eventual outlawing of the tandem event. He also highlighted the importance of good mentorship and public support in making it to the Olympics. However, the Olympics themselves presented a whole new set of experiences, including the realization of one's physical capabilities and the unexpected encounter with terrorism during the 1972 Munich Games. Despite the challenges, the speaker expressed gratitude for the opportunity to compete at the highest level and learn about his own limits.

    • The 1972 Munich Olympics: A Reminder of Unity and HumanityThe 1972 Munich Olympics, despite tragedy, showed the power of sports and humanity to unite, transcend language and politics, and inspire us to prioritize what truly matters.

The 1972 Munich Olympics, despite being marred by tragedy and politics, served as a powerful reminder of the unifying power of sports and humanity. The speaker, who was an athlete at the time, shared his experience of being in the Olympic Village during the terrorist attack, and how he found solace and connection with other athletes in the midst of chaos. The tragic loss of 11 Israeli athletes and their families was a stark reminder of the fragility of life, but the speaker also noted the silver lining of the shared human experience transcending language and politics. The Olympics, as a global institution, represents the potential for unity and transcendence, and the athletes' dedication to their craft serves as a call to action for us all to rise above the divisive forces in our world. The speaker's friend's commitment to sobriety, even during a crisis, further emphasized the importance of prioritizing what truly matters in life.

    • The importance of helping others and authenticity in living a responsible lifeTo live and thrive, we must commit to helping others, staying true to ourselves, and understanding the importance of authenticity and sobriety.

Living a responsible life and maintaining sobriety requires consistent effort and a commitment to putting others before oneself. The speaker shares his experience of forgetting the importance of sobriety and helping others, only to realize that in order to keep what he has and continue growing, he must give back. He emphasizes that it's not about being a good or virtuous person, but rather a sensible one who understands the importance of helping others and maintaining authenticity. The speaker also highlights the importance of staying true to oneself and finding joy in giving, whether it be in a professional or personal capacity. Ultimately, the message is that in order to truly live and thrive, we must be willing to put in the work and help others along the way.

    • Creating meaningful connections goes beyond famous or influential peopleEvery interaction, no matter how seemingly insignificant, has the potential to bring joy and make a difference. Making small changes daily can lead to significant personal growth and impact.

Creating meaningful connections goes beyond just interacting with famous or influential people. Every interaction, no matter how seemingly insignificant, has the potential to bring joy and make a difference. The speaker shares his experiences of connecting with people from all walks of life at his juice bar and how these interactions bring him the greatest high. He emphasizes the importance of making small changes daily, like having a green juice for breakfast, which can lead to significant personal growth. The speaker encourages giving people the tools they need to change and trusting them to embark on their own journey. He also highlights that change doesn't have to be complicated and that making things simple can lead to greater impact. The speaker's experiences at his juice bar serve as a reminder that every interaction has the potential to bring joy and make a difference, regardless of the background or means of the people involved.

    • Gradual process of personal transformation and inspiring changeBecoming an example through personal actions and sharing inspiring stories is more effective than sending negative messages for lasting change. Support the plant-based movement and check out resources for learning about plant-based nutrition.

Personal transformation and inspiring change in others is a gradual process that requires consistent effort and positive experiences. Sending negative messages or labeling someone as "bad" for their current choices may not lead to lasting change. Instead, becoming an example through personal actions and sharing inspiring stories can be more effective. The speaker's own journey from weight loss to becoming a vegan and completing an Ultraman race is an example of this. Additionally, the speaker encourages supporting the plant-based movement by using the Amazon banner ad on richroll.com for holiday shopping. They also offer various products and resources on their website, including a new shopping experience and plant power t-shirts, which are in the process of being launched. For those interested in learning more about plant-based nutrition, the speaker recommends checking out their ultimate guide to plant-based nutrition on mindbodygreen.com.

Ozempic: Weight Loss Miracle Drug or Something Darker? Johann Hari on The Benefits & Risks
This week, I’m joined by Johann Hari, New York Times bestselling author, journalist, and speaker, to explore his journey into the world of the new weight loss drug phenomenon: Ozempic. Johann shares his surprising firsthand experience injecting himself weekly with the drug for over a year, leading to dramatic weight loss but also complex side effects. We discuss the staggering potential of these “magic pills” to curb the global obesity epidemic, but also the alarming risks like thyroid cancer, pancreatitis, and muscle wasting. Johann provides a nuanced look at the bigger picture—examining the role of pharmaceutical profit, societal pressures around body image, and whether medicalizing thinness addresses root causes. His investigation stretches from the science labs of Iceland to the food culture of Japan. This discussion ultimately confronts sobering philosophical questions about the ethics of pharmaceutical shortcuts versus growth through struggle. Please enjoy! Darin Olien: A Superfood Hunter On Peak Nutrition & Next Level Hydration

Darin Olien: A Superfood Hunter On Peak Nutrition & Next Level Hydration
What's it like to traipse the far outreaches of the globe in search of the the world’s greatest edible food sources for optimal health? Meet the Indiana Jones of Superfoods. One of the most popular guests of 2015, this week my friend Darin Olien (@superlifeliving) returns to the podcast to delve deep on the next level nutrition insights he's gleaned from his extraordinary adventure-based experiences as a widely recognized exotic superfoods hunter, wellness advocate, supplement formulator & environmental activist. Over the last twenty plus years, Darin has explored every imaginable port of call across the developing world questing for better, more natural pathways to ultimate wellness. Communing with thousands of rural farmers, growers and manufacturers in remote communities across Peru, Bhutan, the Amazon, the Himalayas, the South Pacific, Latin America and Asia, Darin now shepherds exotic, high-quality, fair-trade superfoods and indigenous herbal commodities to market. Perhaps best known for his work with fitness company Beachbody, Darin was instrumental in the development and ongoing formulation of the wildly successful whole-food supplement, Shakeology. He chronicles his experience and expertise in Superlife: The 5 Simple Fixes That Will Make You Healthy, Fit & Eternally Awesome* (just released in paperback), as well as on his website Superlife.com, where he demystifies health, fitness, nutrition, and longevity into simple daily actions designed to promote life-long wellness. Plant-based, ripped, and bearing more than a passing resemblance to his workout buddy Laird Hamilton, what is most intriguing to me about Darin isn't just that he is a respected authority on the healing potential of food. And it isn't just that he has been instrumental in introducing these so called superfoods to western consumers. What is most interesting is his commitment to do it right. A deep rooted responsibility to fairly, sustainably and transparently support the long-term interests of indigenous grower communities against the industrialized threat posed by the well-funded, politically powerful agricultural interests responsible for decimating the planet's precious rainforests at an unfathomable rate. An inspiration to me personally, this is a guy who walks his talk. From the foods he consumes to the lifestyle habits he practices, Darin is the thriving embodiment of what it means to truly own and take responsibility for your health, your life and the planet we collectively enjoy. But what exactly is a superfood? Are these foods truly “super” or is it all just exaggerated marketing hype? Our first conversation tracked Darin’s life story. Packed with takeaways, today's exchange deep dives into the efficacy of exotic fruits, herbs, adaptogens and mushrooms. Parsing fact from hyperbole, it's a conversation about the most important superfoods you should be incorporating into your daily routine and why. It's a mind-blowing discourse on the importance of water quality and next-level hydration. It's an exploration of Darin’s pre-workout routine and nutrition essentials. Enjoy! Rich

John Salley: The NBA Champion On Going Vegan For Athletic Performance, Longevity & The Environment (Plus: Why So Many Pro Athletes Die Young)

John Salley: The NBA Champion On Going Vegan For Athletic Performance, Longevity & The Environment (Plus: Why So Many Pro Athletes Die Young)
It’s one thing when a skinny runner dude starts talking about the benefits of a plant-based diet. It's another thing altogether when a 6′ 11″ 4-time NBA Champion tells you it's a good idea. Enter John Salley. Husband, father, athlete, actor, entrepreneur, talk show host, philanthropist, wellness advocate, NBA champion… and vegan. John was the first basketball player in NBA history to win four championships with three different teams in three different decades — two with the Detroit Pistons ('89 & '90), one with the Chicago Bulls ('96) & one more with the Los Angeles Lakers ('00). After eleven seasons he retired as a Laker on the 2000 NBA Lakers Championship team. Since his retirement from the NBA, John has worked consistently in television, film, radio, print and new media. For seven years he co-hosted the Emmy-nominated series The Best Damn Sports Show Period (FOX). He then hosted BET's sports talk show Baller before creating his own show Game On for REELZ. In addition, John is an avid entrepreneur, channeling his enthusiasm for clean eating & advocacy for the vegan lifestyle into an array of ventures, including The Vegan Vine, his California wine brand (who knew some wine wasn't vegan?), and his Betta Life 21-Day Challenge. John's mission is simple: to educate as many people as possible on the health and environmental benefits of a plant-based lifestyle. This is a fairly free range conversation that takes us inside John's NBA career; what it was like to play ball at the highest level with guys like Michael Jordan, Isaiah Thomas and Shaq; and how being coached by Phil Jackson, perhaps the greatest coach in basketball history, helped forge his character and inform his post-NBA career success. We get into the hows and whys of John's decision to go vegan; his opinion on how most professional athletes eat; why so many professional athletes die young; how he works with both athletes and average folks to change misplaced, normative ideas about the plant-based lifestyle; the importance of yoga and meditation in his routine; and what drives his mission to change the face of global health. A few more topics covered include: * forging normative change by example * the link between cancer & diet * plant-based nutrition for athletes * the importance of stepping stone goals * warning the NBA about the nutrition risks * millennial adaptation to technology * making money while you sleep * the benefits of meditation * John’s stellar NBA career * Coach Phil Jackson & team dynamics * fragility of reputation & Big Brother John is an easy guy to love. He is engaging, incredibly charismatic and always entertaining. But behind the playful attitude is a serious message worth heeding. I sincerely hope you enjoy the exchange. Peace + Plants, Rich
