    Podcast Summary

    • A devastating blow to America's standing, holding those responsible accountable, and preventing the spread of misinformation and violenceThe Capitol incursion was a result of years of misinformation and hate, requiring accountability and regulation to prevent future incidents.

The violent incursion at the Capitol was a devastating blow to America's standing and a culmination of the last 4 years. It's not enough to call for healing and unity without holding those responsible accountable. Misinformation and hate have been spreading online for years, and the recent events have shown the dire consequences. It's crucial to find out who spread misinformation, conspired with the mob, and coordinate punishments. The power of tech companies, like Amazon and Facebook, should not be used to shut down companies or individuals, but they should be regulated to prevent the spread of misinformation and violence. The events of the past week were not a shock, but rather the result of reckless behavior and ignoring clear warnings. It's essential to acknowledge the damage done and take action to prevent similar incidents from happening in the future.

    • Emphasizing the importance of truth, reason, and civics educationWe must hold people accountable for spreading disinformation and inciting chaos, focusing on repair and accountability, not just moving on.

The power to regulate media and determine what is good and bad should not be left in the hands of big tech and billionaires. The importance of truth, reason, and civics education in our society should be emphasized. Accountability is necessary for those who spread disinformation and incite chaos. The conversation touched upon historical examples, the role of empathy, and the need for prosecutions and censure. It's essential to remember that there is a right and a wrong, and we must hold people accountable for their actions. The focus should be on repair and accountability, not just moving on.

    • Affordable wireless options and smart credit card choicesConsider affordable wireless providers like Mint Mobile and make informed decisions on credit cards and savings accounts with NerdWallet's help to save money and optimize finances

Consumers can make significant savings on their wireless bills by considering affordable providers like Mint Mobile, while also maximizing their spending with smart credit card choices, as suggested by NerdWallet. Michael Smerconish, a media personality, shares his concerns about the current state of the nation, emphasizing the dangerous climate of misinformation that has been building for decades. While social media platforms like Facebook are culprits, the issue is multifaceted and requires a comprehensive approach to address. Mint Mobile offers an attractive option for wireless savings, with plans starting at $15 a month and the ability to bring your own device and keep your number. NerdWallet can help consumers make informed decisions on credit cards and savings accounts to optimize their financial situation.

    • The Growing Influence of Conservative Media on the GOP and Trump's PresidencyConservative media's power has grown, allowing extreme views to spread and Trump to rise, with potentially dangerous consequences.

The influence of conservative media, particularly talk radio and online outlets, as well as Fox News, on the Republican Party has grown significantly in recent decades, leading to the rise of figures like Donald Trump. This shift in power has allowed for a lack of accountability and fact-checking, creating an environment where extreme views can easily spread and reach large audiences. The profit motive of these media outlets further encourages the spread of divisive content. The most concerning development is that one of their own, Donald Trump, became the commander in chief, making him the embodiment of their favorite conservative talk radio host. The insidious nature of the Capitol insurrection suggests that those involved may have had inside knowledge of the building. This trend towards media influence over political leadership is likely to continue, with potentially dangerous consequences.

    • Political developments surrounding President Trump's impeachmentImpeachment is predicted, but timing and consequences uncertain. Some argue for swift conviction to remove Trump's influence, while others see potential benefits for GOP. Media's role in perpetuating misinformation debated. Cumulus announces zero-tolerance policy for false election claims.

The next few days leading up to the inauguration could see significant political developments regarding President Trump. Impeachment is predicted to be the most likely outcome, but the timing and consequences of such an action are uncertain. The question of whether it's in President-elect Biden's best interest for the impeachment process to move quickly is debated, with some arguing that a swift conviction would remove Trump's influence over the GOP and potentially prevent future unrest. A radio caller suggested that Republicans in the Senate might secretly hope for a conviction to rid themselves of Trump's hold on the party. The media's role in perpetuating misinformation and fueling the cycle of political polarization was also discussed. A notable development came from radio network Cumulus, which announced a zero-tolerance policy for anyone spreading false claims about the election outcome. This memo signaled a potential shift in the media landscape and could mark a step towards reducing the spread of misinformation.

    • Diversify your news sourcesSeek out a range of news sources to avoid information silos and deepen understanding of complex issues.

While there are concerns about censorship and regulation in media outlets, it's important for individuals to seek out diverse sources of information and not rely on just one platform or perspective. The media landscape offers more choices than ever before, but many people remain in silos, only consuming content from a limited range of sources. This can lead to a lack of understanding and a deepening divide in the country. The role of organizations like CNN is to provide accurate and unbiased news, and they should strive to do so in a way that serves the public interest. Regulation may be necessary to ensure fairness and prevent the concentration of power, but ultimately, it's up to each of us to seek out and engage with a variety of viewpoints.

    • Embracing a more centrist approach in mediaRadio and other media industries could benefit from allowing for a wider range of opinions, as the political climate grows increasingly polarized and independent thinkers emerge

The radio industry, and potentially other media industries, could benefit from embracing a more centrist approach and allowing for a wider range of opinions, rather than adhering to rigid ideologies. This was a theme emphasized by a radio host who shared his experience of being syndicated after breaking with his party and delivering a keynote address at a convention advocating for this change. Despite receiving tepid applause at the time, he believes that the need for such a shift is more relevant now than ever, especially given the polarized political climate and the emergence of independent thinkers and potential third parties. The host also expressed his hope that the Republican Party may face a fissure if its leadership decides they've had enough of former President Trump, who could continue to make mischief from outside the party.

    • Navigating Accountability and Nuance in a Polarized Political LandscapeMaintain nuance and differentiate between levels of involvement in the Capitol riots for accountability, while avoiding unnecessary polarization.

The political landscape is shifting, with more people identifying as independents than as Republicans or Democrats. This split presents opportunities and challenges. While there is a need for accountability and punishment for those who broke the law during the Capitol riots, it's crucial to maintain nuance and distinguish between different levels of involvement. The analogy of deterrence suggests that real punishment and accountability are necessary for healing and moving forward. However, there is a risk of stoking the Republican base if the perception is that everyone who was present at the event is being punished equally. It's essential to differentiate between those who attended protests peacefully and those who broke the law. Compiling databases or taking punitive measures against those who served in the Trump administration could further polarize the situation. Ultimately, the key is to promote accountability while maintaining nuance and avoiding unnecessary blowback.

    • Staying true to values in media and politicsConsider individual roles and intentions in political and media landscapes, resist ideological bait, and stay true to personal values.

Serving in the White House or having a career in media comes with its challenges and potential consequences. During a discussion, it was mentioned that some people want to keep track of those who served in the Trump administration to penalize them professionally. However, it's important to consider the individual's role and intentions in the situation. Seymour Hersh, a veteran media personality, shared his advice to his younger self, emphasizing the importance of resisting ideological bait in media. He recalled how talk radio used to be a collection of individuals with diverse ideologies, but it took an ideological turn with the rise of Rush Limbaugh and the syndication of conservative voices. Hersh also shared his experiences in multichannel media, including radio, books, and television, highlighting the differences and similarities between them from an impact, professional, and personal enjoyment standpoint. Overall, the conversation underscores the importance of staying true to one's values and intentions in the face of changing media landscapes and societal pressures.

    • Embracing Intimacy and Reach in MediaMedia personality Michael Smerconish values the unique aspects of radio and TV, encourages taking risks early, and advises husbands and fathers to pursue dreams and seek mentors. A personal story underscores the power of written communication.

Successful media personality Michael Smerconish values the unique aspects of different media platforms and encourages taking risks early in life. He appreciates the intimacy and connection with his radio audience and uses the platform to reflect on and expand upon topics discussed in the news cycle. In contrast, he enjoys the reach and interaction with live audiences through television. For husbands and fathers, he advises taking risks and pursuing dreams early in life, and seeking guidance from mentors. A personal anecdote highlights the importance of writing letters and the impact they can have on opportunities.

    • Personal notes and distribution control for brand successWriting personal notes and controlling distribution are crucial strategies for building successful brands and increasing value in today's business landscape.

Controlling distribution is key to building and maintaining successful brands in today's business landscape. Michael Smerconish, a radio host, CNN contributor, and New York Times bestselling author, emphasized the importance of taking the time to write personal notes when trying to get in front of someone. He also highlighted the significance of vertical integration, or controlling the entire supply chain from production to distribution, as a strategy used by companies like Apple and Disney to increase their brand value. Disney's potential acquisition of AMC Theatres could be a vertical integration move, allowing Disney to control the distribution of its content directly to consumers and offering exclusive perks to its Disney+ subscribers. However, it's not as simple as it seems, as Disney still needs to pay a significant portion of its revenues to Apple for distribution through the App Store. Control of distribution is increasingly important as traditional forms of advertising, such as broadcast television, become less effective and more expensive. Companies that can control their distribution channels, like Apple and Disney, are able to build stronger brands and create more value for their shareholders. In summary, taking the time to write personal notes and controlling distribution are two important strategies for building successful brands and increasing value in today's business world.

    • Product innovation and distribution are key factors in building and maintaining brand equityCompanies in retail and CPG industries must prioritize product innovation and distribution to succeed, with Disney focusing on restructuring leases and debt, and CPG companies regionalizing and increasing innovation.

In today's market, brands are no longer the only driver of value for companies, particularly in industries like retail and consumer packaged goods (CPG). Product innovation and distribution are now key factors in building and maintaining brand equity. For instance, Disney needs to take greater control of its distribution channels, while CPG companies like Nestle, Unilever, and P&G should focus on regionalizing their products and increasing innovation to stay competitive. Bankruptcy could be an option for Disney to restructure its leases and debt. Additionally, cities like St. Louis are emerging as innovation hubs, making them attractive places for investment. Overall, companies must adapt to the shifting landscape and prioritize product innovation and distribution to succeed.

    • CPG companies should consider controlling distribution channels for credibility and revenueExperts suggest CPG firms could benefit from vertical distribution strategies, like Apple's acquisitions, to boost credibility and revenue.

While traditional CPG companies excel at recruiting and managing talent, and show innovation, they need to consider vertical distribution strategies to remain competitive. Comparing their potential moves to Apple's acquisition of Bose and Beats, the expert suggests that CPG companies could benefit from controlling their distribution channels to increase credibility and revenue. Regarding digital advertising, the expert disagrees with the assessment that it's a bubble, acknowledging the value of targeted advertising for businesses like Google and Facebook. However, he warns that smaller digital marketing firms may struggle in the face of the duopoly's growth and digital marketing's increasing dominance of marketing budgets.

    • Canva's AI tools in digital marketing discussionStay updated with digital marketing trends, including AI tools, to streamline processes and remain competitive.

Digital marketing, particularly working for one of the duopolies or part of the oligopoly, can be a highly profitable and growing business. During the discussion, there was a mention of Canva's AI tools, which can generate slides and text in seconds, making the creation process more efficient. This unexplained appearance of Canva's presentation during the conversation was eerily on-brand and a testament to the advancements in technology. However, it's surprising that not everyone is aware of such tools, highlighting the importance of staying updated with the latest digital marketing trends. Overall, the conversation emphasized the significance of being part of the digital marketing industry's growth and utilizing innovative tools to streamline processes.

Free Forum Q&A- NOREENA HERTZ, Eyes Wide Open: How to Make Smart Decisions in a Confusing World
    Aired: 1/13/14
According to NOREENA HERTZ, we to make up to 10,000 trivial decisions every single day, 227 just about food. Caffeinated or decaf? Small, medium, large or extra large? Colombian, Ecuadorian, Ethiopian? Hazelnut, vanilla or unflavored? Cream or milk? Sugar or sweetener? If you make the wrong choice when it comes to your coffee, it doesn't matter very much. But make the wrong choice when it comes to your finances, your health, or work, and you could end up sicker, poorer, or without a job.
NOREENA has been a guest on this show on her earlier books. But they were both about global economics. Her new book, Eyes Wide Open is sub-titled How to Make Smart Decisions in a Confusing World, and you can bet I'm going to ask Noreena how she decided on such a departure. In any case, I think this is a welcome subject as we face the choices of a new year, and I hope you'll decide to tune in.
