    Podcast Summary

    • The power of investigative journalism to uncover intriguing storiesInvestigative journalism can uncover hidden stories, spark curiosity, and challenge our perceptions.

The world of journalism, as exemplified by the Endless Thread podcast, provides valuable insights and stories that make us think, rather than telling us what to think. This was highlighted during a conversation about secret tunnels in New York City, specifically one discovered in the basement of the Chabad Lubavitch movement's world headquarters. The tunnel, which was discovered when a cement truck arrived to fill it without proper permits, sparked intrigue and conspiracy theories. Despite the lack of visible evidence, the podcast's hosts, Grace Tatter and Ben Brak Johnson, were fascinated by the story and its connection to the Chabad Movement, an influential Hasidic group whose name means wisdom, understanding, and knowledge. The discovery of the tunnel underscores the importance of investigative journalism and the power of stories to captivate and inspire curiosity.

    • Hidden tunnel discovery sparks intrigue and controversyA 60-foot long hidden tunnel connecting a synagogue's basement to a deserted mikvah generated excitement and controversy, but raised questions about authenticity due to conspiracy theories.

The discovery of a hidden tunnel beneath a New York City building sparked intrigue and controversy. The tunnel, which connected a synagogue's basement to a deserted mikvah, was a significant find, measuring 60 feet in length. The young men who dug the tunnel were met with resistance from authorities and were arrested after refusing to fill it in. The incident went viral, with many people expressing excitement and mystery about the discovery. However, conspiracy theories began to emerge, with some questioning the authenticity of news reports about the incident. Ultimately, the tunnel was filled in, but the intrigue it generated highlights our fascination with hidden secrets and the allure of a secret hideaway.

    • Investigating Mar-a-Lago: Separating Facts from Conspiracy TheoriesWhile unfounded conspiracy theories about Mar-a-Lago have circulated, it's crucial to focus on facts and accurate information. Past experiences, like educational field trips, highlight the importance of critical thinking and fact-checking.

The internet is a breeding ground for conspiracy theories, and the recent discovery of tunnels under Mar-a-Lago has become a hot topic for various conspiracy theories, including those related to child sex trafficking. However, there is a lack of solid evidence to support these claims, and reasonable explanations exist for the presence of mattresses or the digging of tunnels. Furthermore, the high levels of antisemitism and unmoderated social media platforms contribute to the spread of these theories. To combat conspiracy theories, it's essential to focus on facts and accurate information. In my personal experience, I've had unique field trips growing up, including one in high school where my school used New York City as a classroom. However, the recent investigation at Mar-a-Lago serves as a reminder of the importance of fact-checking and critical thinking in the face of misinformation.

    • An eye-opening experience with the Chabad Lubavitch communityLearned about unique practices in the Chabad Lubavitch community, highlighted importance of understanding and respecting diverse beliefs, raised concerns about treatment and education of women

During a project on assimilation, I had an eye-opening experience when my group spent time with the Chabad Lubavitch community in Crown Heights, Brooklyn. This ultra-Orthodox Jewish community is a parallel society within the city, with distinct customs and practices that make it feel like another world. I was surprised to learn that women wear wigs and there is strict gender segregation in their schools and public spaces. While I believe we should strive for harmony among different communities, I also became concerned about the treatment and education of women in this community. It's important to remember that there are variations within the Hasidic community, and practices can differ significantly between different sects. Overall, this experience highlighted the importance of understanding and respecting the unique beliefs and practices of diverse communities, while also acknowledging potential concerns and areas for improvement.

    • Chabad-Lubavitch's Traditional High Holidays GatheringDespite promoting Jewish culture and outreach, Chabad-Lubavitch maintains traditional practices and community during high holidays, with a noticeable separation of genders, ongoing internal struggle, and disconnecting from technology.

The Chabad-Lubavitch community, although known for their outreach and promotion of Jewish culture, still maintains traditional practices and a strong sense of community, even during significant gatherings. During the high holidays, their world headquarters at 770 Eastern Parkway in Brooklyn became a sacred space for thousands of followers from around the world. Despite the large number of people, there was a noticeable separation of men and women, and a long-standing internal struggle existed between the worldwide Chabad movement and an offshoot that operates another synagogue within the building, each with differing beliefs regarding the late Lubavitcher Rebbe, Rabbi Menachem Mendel Schneerson, who is still mourned and believed by some to be the messiah or still alive. The traditional practice of disconnecting from technology during Shabbat added to the unique experience of this community gathering.

    • Controversy over Brooklyn Synagogue TunnelA Brooklyn synagogue's tunnel expansion sparks controversy, with differing perspectives leading to conspiracy theories and uncertainty about its future

The tunnel dug by a group of students in a Brooklyn synagogue, while seen as an enthusiastic expansion by them, is viewed differently by the worldwide Chabad Lubavitch organization. The controversy has led to various conspiracy theories, fueled by the global tension and mistrust, drawing false comparisons between the tunnel in Brooklyn and those in the Gaza strip. The Chabad Lubavitch organization does not believe the Rebbe was the messiah and sees the tunnel as a juvenile fantasy, not a grand synagogue expansion. The strange association of tunnels in different parts of the world during a time of heightened global tension and confusion has led to a proliferation of conspiracy theories. The future of the tunnel remains uncertain, with questions about whether it will be filled in or remain a point of contention. The incident serves as a reminder of the power of context and perspective in shaping perceptions and the potential for misunderstandings in a world where trust in information is at an all-time low.

    • Tension and financial consequences from unexpected tunnel constructionIllegal construction projects can cause tension, damage property, and have financial consequences. Communication and transparency are key in community projects.

The unexpected construction of a tunnel near a community in New York City has caused tension and financial consequences for the involved parties. The structural damage to some buildings has raised concerns about the future of the community, particularly as the two congregations involved have a history of conflict. The incident serves as a reminder of the importance of communication and transparency in community projects. As the situation unfolds, it will be important to monitor the mood and vibes within the community and see how the parties involved navigate this awkward living arrangement. The story serves as a reminder of the potential consequences of illegal construction projects and the importance of respecting the rights and property of others. Stay tuned for more updates on this developing story.

Gen Z wants you to take political action, one TikTok at a time

Gen Z wants you to take political action, one TikTok at a time

Gen Z is over it. The youngest generation of adults is inheriting a climate crisis, the ongoing fallout from a global pandemic, a polarized political landscape, and a tenuous economic reality.  And many Gen Z members, a generation more likely to identify as progressive than conservative, are ready for something to give.

Enter: Gen Z for Change — a youth-led non-profit that brands itself as, "the place where the creator economy and progressive politics intersect on social media." The group leverages a hundreds-deep network of social media creators to spread calls to action over TikTok. They've also pulled on the programming expertise within their team to develop a caché of semi-automatic tools that take the guesswork out of engaging with their political agenda.

Their latest tool, "Ceasefire Now!!" takes these efforts one step further — resulting in, by Gen Z for Change's count, two million emails calling for a ceasefire in Gaza hitting the inboxes of elected representatives in Washington every day.

    The Jackie Show

Our interactions with nature are increasingly mediated by technology. We scroll through wildlife feeds on TikTok. We use Instagram to plan hikes. Even in the wilderness, we religiously bring our phones to document the experience. And then there are animal cams.

Since the 1990s, people have fawned over livestreams of cute pandas and colorful fish. One could argue that animal cams another example of how we’ve jammed a screen between ourselves and the wild. But the story of Jackie the bald eagle presents a different perspective: one in which technology might bring us closer to our fellow creatures.

Producer Dean Russell speaks with Endless Thread co-host Ben Brock Johnson about the potential upsides of technonaturalism.

In the second half we get into opto, chemo and magneto genetics and how they are genetically modifying the neurons. Are they simply doing the mapping now? We show the example of the Pink Floyd song heard through the brains of others, and how attention is the coin of the realm.

We also speculate about graphine oxide, spirituality in science fiction, critical thinking, current mind control techniques with the phone and internet. He talks about sneaking into Bohemian Grove, dual use tech, rise of social media, meeting Timothy Leary, the future, bizarre inspirations, pole shift and making contact with an intuitive source of wisdom.

Ep. 674 - Super Straight Pride

Today on the Matt Walsh Show, a new online trend has some people declaring themselves “superstraight.” The Left has condemned it as transphobic, but then again they condemn everything as transphobic. Also five headlines including BLM protesters fighting against racism by harassing little girls on their way to a cheerleading competition, Minneapolis braces for rioting as the Derek Chauvin trial begins, and lonely people have given rise to a new trend: cow cuddling. Plus in our Daily Cancellation, we’ll discuss a pastor who got himself fired after he gave a sermon telling women that they have a responsibility to look attractive to their husbands. Did he have a point? I’ll see how many people I can tick off when we discuss that.
