    Podcast Summary

    • A deep dive into teachers' lives and the education systemThrough following three teachers and interviewing hundreds, Robbins reveals the urgent issues facing the teaching profession and amplifies unheard voices to offer a new perspective on US education.

"The Teachers" by Alexandra Robbins provides a compelling and eye-opening look into the lives of teachers in America. Robbins aimed to write a fast-paced, engaging book that would give readers a deeper understanding of the teacher's perspective and the realities of the education system. By following three teachers from different regions over the course of a school year and interviewing hundreds more, she shed light on the urgent issues facing the profession that were in crisis even before the pandemic. Robbins' goal is to amplify voices that are not always heard and to help the public gain a better appreciation for the challenges teachers face every day. The book serves as a wake-up call, revealing the behind-the-scenes stories and secrets of teachers' lives and offering a much-needed perspective on the state of education in the United States.

    • Teachers find motivation in relationships despite challengesTeachers stay in education for rewarding relationships but face under-resourcing challenges, including inadequate pay, subpar facilities, and lack of supplies

Despite the challenging circumstances and overwhelming odds, teachers continue to stay in education due to the joy and reward they receive from building meaningful relationships with students and colleagues. These relationships provide the motivation and inspiration that help teachers get through the tough times. However, teachers face numerous challenges, including being under-resourced, which encompasses inadequate pay, subpar school facilities, and the need for teachers to provide students with necessary supplies. These challenges have only grown over time, making the teaching profession more difficult than ever before.

    • Challenges teachers face outside the classroomTeachers face numerous challenges outside the classroom, including under-resourcing, parental issues, student behavior, bureaucratic problems, lack of resources for special needs students, and workplace safety concerns.

Teaching comes with numerous challenges that go beyond the classroom. Teachers are often under-resourced, both in terms of time and support staff. Under-resourced conditions make it difficult for teachers to complete their work effectively and be considered an effective teacher. Parental issues, such as aggressive or disrespectful behavior, can also pose significant challenges. In addition, student behavior, especially in secondary schools, can lead to safety concerns and legal consequences. Bureaucratic problems, including insufficient support from administration, can further complicate the teaching experience. Two additional challenges are the lack of adequate resources and support for managing students with extreme special needs, and workplace safety issues, including violence from students and bullying from principals, with little recourse for educators.

    • Under-resourcing teachers harms student learning conditionsHigher teacher pay correlates with improved student academic performance, but teachers' working conditions also impact their ability to teach effectively. Factors such as toxic work environments, lack of resources, and parent aggression contribute to burnout and an exodus from the profession, ultimately under-resourcing children's education.

The under-resourcing of teachers not only affects their working conditions but also negatively impacts student learning conditions. Teachers deserve higher salaries as research shows a correlation between higher teacher pay and improved student academic performance. However, the issue goes beyond just pay, as teachers' working conditions significantly influence their ability to teach effectively. This includes factors such as toxic work environments, lack of resources, and parent aggression. The culture of teacher blaming exacerbates these issues, with entitled parents making unrealistic demands and then blaming teachers when they cannot meet them. This not only harms teachers but also undermines the education system as a whole. By failing to invest in teachers, we are failing to invest in the future of our children. The story of the Pennsylvania English teacher being hit by a parent's car and then blamed for it is a poignant illustration of this issue. Teachers are expected to solve complex societal problems with limited resources, leading to burnout and an exodus from the profession. It is crucial to recognize that when we under-resource teachers, we are ultimately under-resourcing our children's education.

    • Parent-Teacher Relationships: Shifting Expectations and Unrealistic DemandsDespite being public employees, some parents hold teachers to personal standards, leading to aggression and unrealistic expectations. High stakes testing and online access fuel a sense of urgency and entitlement, impacting respect and appreciation for teachers.

The relationship between teachers and parents has shifted in recent times, leading to increased tension and unrealistic expectations. While there are certainly supportive parents, the fallout from negative interactions can be demoralizing and disheartening for teachers. Some parents have resorted to aggression, sending nasty emails or even being physically violent. This behavior is baffling given that teachers are responsible for educating other people's children. The mentality of "you work for me" is a common misconception, as teachers are public employees, not personal ones. The high stakes testing culture and increased online access to teachers and grades have contributed to this shift, leading to a sense of urgency and entitlement among some parents. It's essential to remember that teachers are professionals who deserve respect and appreciation, not constant criticism and micromanagement.

    • The Pressure of Test Scores and the Power of GuaranteesThe No Child Left Behind act led to a high-pressure environment for teachers based on student test scores, while eBay's authenticity guarantee and Lume's long-lasting deodorant offer peace of mind and confidence to consumers. As Mother's Day approaches, prioritize self-care and appreciate caregivers.

The implementation of the No Child Left Behind act led to a high-pressure environment for teachers based on student test scores, which in turn shifted the blame from the government to teachers. This climate of fear and competition among teachers and parents resulted in increased parental involvement, but also a reliance on immediate feedback and comparison with other parents. This feedback loop led to a perpetuating cycle of questioning and challenging the education system. Meanwhile, eBay's authenticity guarantee provides customers with peace of mind when making purchases, ensuring they receive real and authentic products. Lume's whole body deodorant, on the other hand, offers long-lasting odor control using mandelic acid, giving consumers confidence and freedom from embarrassing situations. Lastly, as Mother's Day approaches, it's essential to appreciate caregivers and prioritize self-care, including using high-quality skincare products like those offered by OneSkin.

    • Effective anti-aging eye cream and the challenges of teachingOneSkin's innovative eye cream targets aging cells, while teachers need resources, support, and understanding to effectively teach diverse students.

The OneSkin eye cream, with its proprietary OS one peptide, is an effective addition to any skincare routine, as it is the first ingredient proven to inhibit aging cells that cause wrinkles and thinning skin. OneSkin, the world's first skin longevity company, focuses on the cellular aspects of aging, enabling individuals to maintain younger-looking skin for longer. Meanwhile, teachers face immense pressure to bridge all knowledge gaps for their students, regardless of their previous knowledge or life challenges. This expectation can lead to a daunting and overwhelming workload, causing some educators to question their abilities and even consider leaving the profession. Despite their efforts, teachers are often judged based on high-stakes testing and labels, which can negatively impact their confidence and sense of self-worth. Both the OneSkin eye cream and the challenges faced by teachers serve as reminders of the importance of acknowledging the unique needs and circumstances of individuals. While the eye cream addresses the cellular aspects of aging, teachers require adequate resources, support, and understanding to effectively cater to their diverse student population. By recognizing and addressing these needs, we can create positive outcomes and foster growth in both skincare and education. Use code SHARON for a 15% discount on OneSkin products at oneskin.co. • Teachers face challenges with internal and external validationDespite their compassion and inner drive, teachers lack the necessary resources and support to effectively address behavior issues and disruptive students, worsened by the pandemic.

While surgeons in healthcare can experience both internal and external validation for their success, teachers often lack the same external validation and resources to effectively address the challenges they face in the classroom. A high school teacher from Oregon expressed her frustration with seeing students make poor choices despite her best efforts, feeling overwhelmed and unable to meet their needs. Behavior issues have worsened since the pandemic, with one disruptive student potentially impacting an entire class. Substitute teachers also face challenges managing disruptive behavior, and when students are removed from the classroom for severe issues, they often return without any meaningful consequences. Teachers' compassion and inner drive to improve students' lives are evident, but they need more support and resources to effectively address the complex issues they face.

    • Disconnect between teachers and administrators over student behaviorAdmin support and resources are crucial for teachers to manage student behavior effectively, preventing disruptions and creating a positive learning environment.

There is a significant disconnect between teachers and school administrators when it comes to handling student behavior issues. Teachers often feel unsupported and left to handle disciplinary actions on their own, leading to a cycle of disruption in the classroom. Administrators, in some cases, refuse to take action unless proper paperwork is submitted, which can be time-consuming and overwhelming for teachers. This situation can lead to frustration for teachers and a lack of effective discipline for students with chronic behavior problems. It's important for administrators to take a more active role in addressing student behavior and supporting teachers in creating a positive learning environment. This issue affects a significant portion of the student population and can have long-lasting consequences. It's crucial to find a solution that benefits both the students and the teachers. Additionally, teachers need the necessary resources and support from administrators to effectively manage their classrooms and ensure a productive learning environment for all students.

    • EBay and Quince offer unique value to consumersEBay ensures authenticity and trust in luxury purchases, while Quince offers ethical luxury at affordable prices. Supporting teachers is essential for a positive learning environment.

Both eBay and Quince offer valuable solutions for consumers in different ways. eBay ensures authenticity and trust in high-end purchases through its expert verification process, making luxury items more accessible and confidence-inspiring for shoppers. Quince, on the other hand, offers luxury quality at affordable prices while maintaining ethical and responsible manufacturing practices. Teachers, meanwhile, want the public to understand their dedication and the challenges they face, and for parents to support them by trusting their expertise and advocating for better resources and conditions. These actions can have a direct impact on students' learning experiences. Ultimately, both eBay and Quince provide consumers with unique value, and showing appreciation and support for teachers is essential for fostering a positive learning environment.

    • Supporting teachers benefits children and schoolsParents can express appreciation through positive communications with school administrators, which encourages teachers and improves learning conditions. The book 'The Teachers' highlights the importance of community support for teachers and is a must-read for anyone who cares about education and children's future.

Parents play a crucial role in encouraging and supporting teachers, which in turn positively impacts children's learning conditions and the overall quality of schools in their communities. Parents can easily express their appreciation through simple and positive communications with school administrators. The book "The Teachers: A Year Inside America's Most Vulnerable Profession" offers valuable insights into the challenges teachers face and highlights the importance of community support. This quick and eye-opening read is a must-read for anyone who cares about children, education, and safe, prosperous communities. By advocating for teachers, we invest in the future of our children and our society. So, let's all take a moment to show our appreciation for the teachers in our lives and support them in their essential role.

The fight over sick pay in Ontario (Rebroadcast from March 12, 2021)

This is a rebroadcast from March 12, 2021.

Public health officials, city mayors and small businesses have called for it: paid sick leave. It has been cited as a factor that’s been proven to slow the spread of COVID-19 — without the protection of paid sick leave, employees often feel forced to go to work even while sick and symptomatic, to avoid missing a pay cheque or losing their jobs. The Ontario government has said for months it has no plans to create a paid sick leave program of its own but the pressure, both internally and publicly, is ratcheting up on the Ford government, ahead of the 2021 budget. Robert Benzie, Toronto Star’s Queen’s Park bureau chief, talks to “This Matters” host Adrian Cheung, about the months-long political fight over paid sick leave in Ontario and what might be expected in the coming weeks.
