Dr. Lance Evans is the superintendent of the New Albany School District.  Late in 2023, Dr. Evans was hired by the Mississippi Department of Education to become Superintendent of Schools for the state of Mississippi.  In the state of Mississippi, must not only be hired by MDE but must also be approved by the legislature.  If approved, Dr. Evans will assume command of the department on July 1.  Melinda sat down with Dr. Evans to discuss his successes in New Albany and his plans for Mississippi's schools.  Part 1 of this interview was released March 5.

This Week:  In this episode, Show Host Melinda talks with Lanell Coln, Director of the Sharing Hearts organization in Corinth, MS.

Started in 2007, Sharing Hearts is a free senior care day service and ministry serving the Corinth community as a daycare program for adults who have Alzheimer’s disease, Dementia, Parkinson's, and other forms of disability. The hope of the ministry is to love and care for those special adults while giving them the opportunity for socialization and to also provide a “break” for their long-term caregivers while giving the caregivers a built-in support group.  

The group meets each week on Tuesdays from 10 am to 3 pm at First Baptist Church in Corinth (501 Main Street, Corinth). Activities of the program include crafts, light exercise, music, devotionals, and a rousting game of balloon volleyball which is the highlight of most days! Snacks and a noon meal are also provided.

The program is run completely through tax-deductible donations. If you would like to donate to this worthy cause, contact the director, Lanell Coln, or mail your donation to the First Baptist Church of Corinth with a memo that it is for the Sharing Hearts program. Checks should be made out to Sharing Hearts.

This Week:   In this episode, Melinda talks with Byron Lopez, a senior at Pine Grove High School as well as a team member at The Shark 102.3. Byron is multi-talented but primarily works with the social media postings and monitoring community events announced on the Community Calendar updates each Tuesday and Thursday 4 p.m. In addition to finishing his senior year, Byron is also currently serving as the FFA Officer Coordinator at Pine Grove Chapter. He credits many of the leadership opportunities and experiences he has had through FFA as great preparation for the job he is doing now, especially on the communication end of things.  

National FFA Week is recognized February 18-24 and it is a time to celebrate the chapter's overall achievements as well as highlight many of the cool things they do in the school and local community. This year, the FFA annual school-wide service project is a canned food drive with all donations going to the Food Bank at the Tippah County-based Good Samaritan Center. The Pine Grove FFA Chapter Officers will also conduct a service project geared toward the residents at Diversicare, a local nursing home. The officers will create and deliver care packages for the residents and each package includes lotion, lip care products, comfy socks, and a Word Search activity book. In addition to these service projects, FFA leads many fun events and fundraisers for the school.  

Students as young as 8 years old or third grade can join FFA and can continue in FFA even after graduating high school. There are many leadership opportunities for members through their school years. Because of his experience in FFA and the leadership opportunities he has gained, Byron even plans to run for a state officer position later this spring. He also plans to be a part of the collegiate chapter of FFA at Mississippi State University when he starts attending there this fall.

Listen to Geri's journey from Family Court Judge to Steel Guitarist to Radio DJ in Maui, Hawai'i.  During their interview, Geri Valdriz gives his perspective of having a hard time during his initial visits to Ripley, MS because he was amazed at how much people here talked. He explains that he came to realize that the constant communication was the basis for connection to establish "ties" to each other. He says he learned to slow down and listen to what was really being said. In Hawai'i, there are also many small communities where most of the people are kin to the others or have long-term friendships so he was able to understand that need for connection.  An attorney by profession, Geri also served as a Family Court Judge for over 15 years. Upon retirement, Geri began to refocus his attention on more artistic adventures and learned to play the Steel Guitar.  As a Hawai'ian Steel Guitarist, Geri has had many opportunities to play with musicians in Memphis, TN as well as all over Hawai'i. Most listeners will not know that the steel guitar and the concept of playing a slide guitar actually originated in Hawai'i in the 1800's before it crossed over to America and later, the world. Geri also spends much of his time as a DJ on KMNO 91.7 FM, a non-profit radio station where he hosts a radio show every Tuesday from 5-8 p.m. called Hawai'ian Steel. This Week:   In this episode, Melinda sits down with Austin Bell, owner of Corinth Gaming Center and Video Game Corner as well as the Event Organizer for Corinth Comic Con. The Corinth Comic Con event will be held January 20th beginning at 10 a.m. at the Crossroads Arena in Corinth, MS.  

Throughout the interview, Austin discusses how Corinth Comic Con is ultimately a pop culture convention and community event where families come together to enjoy everything from superheroes to video games. There is even a large Cos-Play contest where all ages can dress up as their favorite Disney princess, Comic Superhero, or even their favorite cartoon character. Last year, more than 100 people participated in the Cos-Play contest.  

This year's event is the 4th annual Corinth Comic Con event and Austin shares how the vendors, activities, attendance, and special guest appearance continue to grow each year. This year, a few of the Special Guests include Scott Innes (Voice of Scooby Doo), Mark Dodson (Voice of Gremlins & Salacious Crumb in Star Wars), and Sonny Strait (Voice of Krillin in Dragonball Z and more).
