Heard It On The Shark

Dr. Lance Evans is the superintendent of the New Albany School District.  Late in 2023, Dr. Evans was hired by the Mississippi Department of Education to become Superintendent of Schools for the state of Mississippi.  In the state of Mississippi, must not only be hired by MDE but must also be approved by the legislature.  If approved, Dr. Evans will assume command of the department on July 1.  Melinda sat down with Dr. Evans to discuss his successes in New Albany and his plans for Mississippi's schools.  Part 1 of this interview was released March 5.

This Week:  In this episode, Show Host Melinda talks with Lanell Coln, Director of the Sharing Hearts organization in Corinth, MS.

Started in 2007, Sharing Hearts is a free senior care day service and ministry serving the Corinth community as a daycare program for adults who have Alzheimer’s disease, Dementia, Parkinson's, and other forms of disability. The hope of the ministry is to love and care for those special adults while giving them the opportunity for socialization and to also provide a “break” for their long-term caregivers while giving the caregivers a built-in support group.  

The group meets each week on Tuesdays from 10 am to 3 pm at First Baptist Church in Corinth (501 Main Street, Corinth). Activities of the program include crafts, light exercise, music, devotionals, and a rousting game of balloon volleyball which is the highlight of most days! Snacks and a noon meal are also provided.

The program is run completely through tax-deductible donations. If you would like to donate to this worthy cause, contact the director, Lanell Coln, or mail your donation to the First Baptist Church of Corinth with a memo that it is for the Sharing Hearts program. Checks should be made out to Sharing Hearts.

This Week:   In this episode, Melinda talks with Byron Lopez, a senior at Pine Grove High School as well as a team member at The Shark 102.3. Byron is multi-talented but primarily works with the social media postings and monitoring community events announced on the Community Calendar updates each Tuesday and Thursday 4 p.m. In addition to finishing his senior year, Byron is also currently serving as the FFA Officer Coordinator at Pine Grove Chapter. He credits many of the leadership opportunities and experiences he has had through FFA as great preparation for the job he is doing now, especially on the communication end of things.  

National FFA Week is recognized February 18-24 and it is a time to celebrate the chapter's overall achievements as well as highlight many of the cool things they do in the school and local community. This year, the FFA annual school-wide service project is a canned food drive with all donations going to the Food Bank at the Tippah County-based Good Samaritan Center. The Pine Grove FFA Chapter Officers will also conduct a service project geared toward the residents at Diversicare, a local nursing home. The officers will create and deliver care packages for the residents and each package includes lotion, lip care products, comfy socks, and a Word Search activity book. In addition to these service projects, FFA leads many fun events and fundraisers for the school.  

Students as young as 8 years old or third grade can join FFA and can continue in FFA even after graduating high school. There are many leadership opportunities for members through their school years. Because of his experience in FFA and the leadership opportunities he has gained, Byron even plans to run for a state officer position later this spring. He also plans to be a part of the collegiate chapter of FFA at Mississippi State University when he starts attending there this fall.

Listen to Geri's journey from Family Court Judge to Steel Guitarist to Radio DJ in Maui, Hawai'i.  During their interview, Geri Valdriz gives his perspective of having a hard time during his initial visits to Ripley, MS because he was amazed at how much people here talked. He explains that he came to realize that the constant communication was the basis for connection to establish "ties" to each other. He says he learned to slow down and listen to what was really being said. In Hawai'i, there are also many small communities where most of the people are kin to the others or have long-term friendships so he was able to understand that need for connection.  An attorney by profession, Geri also served as a Family Court Judge for over 15 years. Upon retirement, Geri began to refocus his attention on more artistic adventures and learned to play the Steel Guitar.  As a Hawai'ian Steel Guitarist, Geri has had many opportunities to play with musicians in Memphis, TN as well as all over Hawai'i. Most listeners will not know that the steel guitar and the concept of playing a slide guitar actually originated in Hawai'i in the 1800's before it crossed over to America and later, the world. Geri also spends much of his time as a DJ on KMNO 91.7 FM, a non-profit radio station where he hosts a radio show every Tuesday from 5-8 p.m. called Hawai'ian Steel. The show features guests, musicians, Hawai'ian steel guitar music, and call-ins from listeners. Geri gives a fantastic interview and one listeners will enjoy. This Week:   In this episode, Melinda sits down with Austin Bell, owner of Corinth Gaming Center and Video Game Corner as well as the Event Organizer for Corinth Comic Con. The Corinth Comic Con event will be held January 20th beginning at 10 a.m. at the Crossroads Arena in Corinth, MS.  

Throughout the interview, Austin discusses how Corinth Comic Con is ultimately a pop culture convention and community event where families come together to enjoy everything from superheroes to video games. There is even a large Cos-Play contest where all ages can dress up as their favorite Disney princess, Comic Superhero, or even their favorite cartoon character. Last year, more than 100 people participated in the Cos-Play contest.  

This year's event is the 4th annual Corinth Comic Con event and Austin shares how the vendors, activities, attendance, and special guest appearance continue to grow each year. This year, a few of the Special Guests include Scott Innes (Voice of Scooby Doo), Mark Dodson (Voice of Gremlins & Salacious Crumb in Star Wars), and Sonny Strait (Voice of Krillin in Dragonball Z and more). Christina and Ken each also give insight into disaster relief efforts provided by both professionals and volunteers following a tornado.

This Week:  Packing up all the holiday decorations is always a task - and not nearly as fun as putting it all out. However, packing up all the holiday décor helps create a clean slate and a fresh start for the New Year!

In this last episode for 2023, Melinda talks with Beth Benson about tips how to decide what to keep, what needs to be repurposed, donated, or discarded, and what you might need for next year. One great tip was to use smaller boxes and maybe pack things away room by room instead of all together in large boxes. Label the boxes for ease in finding what you want to display. This Week:  Holiday gatherings are happening all through this month so Melinda sat down to talk cocktails with Will Vance, who with his wife, Dawn, owns Jefferson St. Tap Room on The Square in downtown Ripley. With a laid-back vibe, live music, good food, and great drinks, Jefferson St. Tap Room has a little something for everybody. In this episode, Will talks about the newest signature cocktail at JSTR, Rudolph's Night In, as well as three cocktails created just for Bourbon drinkers - Jingle Bell Smash, Christmas Kentucky Buck, and a Cinnamon Old-Fashioned.  Below, find the recipes for each drink and the recipes for the three Simple Syrups used in the cocktails.  All ingredient amounts are per drink.

Simple Syrup

  1 cup water

  1 cup white sugar

Combine water and sugar in a small saucepan. Bring to a boil, stir until sugar dissolves. Remove from heat and allow syrup to cool slightly. 

Pour syrup into a sterilized glass jar and cool completely. Store simple syrup in the glass jar with a tight-fitting lid in the refrigerator for up to 1 month.

Rosemary Simple Syrup

  1 cup water

  1 cup white sugar

  ¼ cup rosemary leaves

Combine water, sugar, and rosemary leaves in a small saucepan. Bring to a boil, stir until sugar dissolves. Simmer for 1 minute. Remove from heat and let syrup steep for at least 30 minutes.

Pour syrup into a sterilized glass jar through a mesh strainer to remove rosemary leaves; let cool.

Store simple syrup in the glass jar with a tight-fitting lid in the refrigerator for up to 1 month.

Cinnamon Simple Syrup

  1 cup water

  1 cup white sugar

  4 Cinnamon Sticks

  ½ teaspoon Pure Vanilla Extract (optional)

Combine water and sugar in a small saucepan. Bring to a boil, stir until sugar dissolves completely.

Reduce the heat and add the cinnamon sticks. Cover and simmer for 5 minutes. Remove from heat and let syrup steep for at least 1 hour and up to 6 hours depending on the level of cinnamon desired. 

Remove cinnamon sticks and stir in vanilla extract. Pour syrup into a sterilized glass jar with a tight-fitting lid. Store in the refrigerator for up to 2 weeks.

Rudolph’s Night In

  4 oz. of Canada Dry Ginger Ale (or the Ginger Ale of your choice)

  ½ oz. Rosemary Simple Syrup

1 oz. Lemon Juice

  2 oz. Pomegranate Juice 

  2 oz. Bacardi White Rum (or any white rum of your choice)

Stir all ingredients together and pour into a martini glass or other stemware.

To make drinks look a bit more festive, rim them and add a garnish! 

For Rudolph’s Night In, crush peppermints into small pieces. Take a martini glass, wet the rim with lime juice, and dip it in the crushed peppermint. Hang a miniature candy cane from the rim or add it into the drink and prepare for oohs and aahs from your guests.

Jingle Bell Smash

  2 oz. Elijah Craig Small Batch (or the Bourbon of your choice)

  2 oz. Cranberry Juice

  1 oz. Rosemary Simple Syrup

  1 oz. Lemon Juice

Stir all ingredients together and pour into a tumbler. Garnish with a few fresh cranberries and/or a sprig of rosemary.

Christmas Kentucky Buck

  2 oz. of Woodford Reserve or Maker’s Mark 46 Bourbon (or the bourbon of your choice)

  1 oz. Lemon Juice

  1 oz. Simple Syrup

  2 oz. of Cranberry Juice

  2 oz. Club Soda

Stir all ingredients together and pour into a tumbler. Garnish with a mint leaf sprig.

** For a more pronounced mint flavor, muddle a few mint leaves in the bottom of the glass before building the cocktail. 

To Muddle means to mash or crush the leaves, herbs, spices, or fruit so that the aroma and essence of it adds to the drink. Do not pulverize the item. 

Cinnamon Old-Fashioned

  1 thin Orange Slice

  2 oz. of Bourbon

  1 oz. of Simple Syrup

  Dash of Bitters

  ¼ cup of orange juice

  1-2 oz. of Cinnamon Simple Syrup

  Cinnamon Stick

Muddle the orange slice in the bottom of an Old-Fashioned glass. Mix in next 5 ingredients. Stir with the cinnamon stick and serve with the cinnamon stick as a flavorful garnish.

This Week:   In this episode, Melinda is really excited to learn more about the State School Superintendent for Mississippi's Advisory Council as she talks with two of its members. Ireland Rakestraw, a senior, and Shaddai Galvez, a junior, are both students at Blue Mountain High School and were appointed as members of the council. The Advisory Council is made up of 150 members. Ireland and Shaddai have already met with the council at The Capitol in Jackson. The council is made up of high school juniors, seniors, and students in their first year of college. The girls have gotten to know people from all over the state. The goal of the council is to take insight from students to better the education system in Mississippi. Ireland and Shaddai have already learned so much about what is going on in the state and they look forward to the next meeting in February. Give this podcast a listen to learn more.

This Week:  In this episode, Melinda talks with Kylee Jones FFA President at Pine Grove High School, and Byron Lopez, FFA Officer Coordinator. They discuss the programs and benefits of FFA as well as their upcoming Bull Bash Rodeo fundraiser . This year is the 4th Annual Bull Bash Rodeo and Buck Wild is presenting the rodeo. In addition to the rodeo, the Bull Bash will have live music by Cody Riddle and games for the kids. The Bull Bash will be at the Tippah County Fairgrounds on Saturday, November 25th at 6 p.m. in the indoor arena.  Admission is $12. Children 5 years and younger get in free. Gates open at 5 p.m. All proceeds go to straight to the Pine Grove FFA Chapter.

This Week:   In this episode, Melinda talks with long-time friend and author, Jack Elliott, Jr. In this phone interview, Jack discusses what sparked his interest in the life of Colonel William Clark Falkner, the great grandfather of Nobel Prize winning author William Faulkner, and how Elliott's desire to know more led him to research and write his book, To the Ramparts of Infinity.

World renown author, William Faulkner, used his great-grandfather as a model for the character Colonel John Sartoris. In fact, many of William Faulkner's characters were comprised of elements pulled from people who once walked the streets of Ripley and Tippah County. Because of all those connections, Elliott felt the story of Colonel William Clark Falkner should be told.

In his book, To the Ramparts of Infinity, Elliott has created a "field guide" to the history of Ripley. The book really brings that time period alive for the reader.

This Week:   In this episode, Melinda talks again with Jason Martin, Director of the Hunger Coalition based in Tupelo and Lee County. This conversation is focused on the work at St. Luke Food Pantry in Lee County. This food pantry was begun in a church closet over 27 years ago and initially helped 8 families a month. It now serves over 2400 Lee County families each month.  

Volunteers and monetary donations are vital to the work of the Food Pantry. The best way to find out more about volunteering with this great organization is to go to "stlukefoodpantry.org" website, click on the Volunteer tab at the bottom of the page, complete the application, and someone will contact you about the when and how of volunteering.  Monetary donations are very important to the organization - even more so than canned food donations. With money, the St Luke Food Pantry can purchase items in bulk. To donate once or set it up as a regular monthly donation, go to the website and click "Donate".  

The Food Pantry is located at 2653 Eason Boulevard in Tupelo and is open Thursdays from 8 a.m. to 12 noon. The Food Pantry is closed on the 5th Thursday of any month.  If you need help and are a first-time client, bring a photo I.D., proof of residency in Lee County such as a piece of mail or utility bill, and the names and dates of birth of the persons in the household.  

If you need help - even if you do not live in Lee County, do not wait until your family is out of food. There is a listing of Food Pantries in the counties across Northeast MS at "hungercoalitionnems.org".

If you want to help your community, look for ways to volunteer your services and be a resource for others. One place to start is to check out the "stlukefoodpantry.org" website.

This Week:   Show Host Melinda Marsalis sits down with Carla Kuhl, the new Assistant Director of the Tippah County Wellness Center. At the Wellness Center, members may take advantage of both an indoor and an outdoor walking track, free weights, circuit-style weights, a pool, and sauna. Carla also discusses all the programs currently offered at the wellness center including spinning classes, yoga, Zumba-style dance classes, massage, nutrition counseling,  and water aerobics,  as well as other instructor-led classes.  There is even a chair aerobics class for those who think they need to start slow. But don't be fooled because you are sitting down, it is still a really good workout!
