    • Republican AdvantageRepublicans are using the RNC to hammer Democrats on economic, public safety, and foreign policy issues, positioning themselves as the voice of the working class, and emphasizing the importance of the Midwest in the fall campaign

The ongoing Republican National Convention in Milwaukee has seen Republicans hammering Democrats on economic, public safety, and foreign policy issues. Many Republicans believe they have an advantage going into the fall campaign due to voter dissatisfaction with the Biden administration. Notably, the party is positioning itself as the voice of the working class. Following the convention, former President Donald Trump and his running mate, Ohio Senator J.D. Vance, will campaign in Michigan, emphasizing the importance of the Midwest in this year's presidential election. Protests outside the RNC have been relatively quiet, but Democratic surrogates, including Minnesota Governor Tim Walz, have criticized Republicans for their extreme views on abortion restrictions, election integrity, and foreign policy. The Democratic National Convention is scheduled for next month. Additionally, the Minneapolis City Council is deciding on a tentative union contract that would make Minneapolis police officers some of the highest-paid in the state.

Eight incidents have occurred over the past six weeks, with suspects spraying fire extinguishers and smashing windows. The Council on American Islamic Relations' Jaylani Hussein believes the attacks began after the city publicly announced plans for the building. Meanwhile, positive news came from Leech Lake Band of Ojibwe leaders, who celebrated the restoration of nearly 12,000 acres of land to the tribe. This culturally significant event was made possible through federal legislation signed in 2020. In other news, the WNBA's Las Vegas Aces defeated the Atlanta Dream, while Minnesota United lost to DC United in soccer. The WNBA and Olympic Games will take precedence over the next few weeks, with the links and Minnesota United set to resume play in August.
