What You Don't Hear About Entrepreneurship | A RANT

    enOctober 14, 2018

    Podcast Summary

    • Starting businesses during uncertain economic timesKeep expenses low, focus on revenue, and make practical decisions during economic downturns

Practicality is essential for entrepreneurs, especially during uncertain economic times. Gary Vaynerchuk shares his experiences of starting businesses during difficult periods, including the late 1990s stock market crash and the aftermath of 9/11. He emphasizes the importance of keeping expenses low, focusing on revenue, and not being overly romantic or dream-driven. VaynerMedia, for instance, was founded during the US economic meltdown when clients were reluctant to pay for marketing services. Vaynerchuk's success stories serve as reminders that entrepreneurship is not just about having a cool title or building a brand, but about making practical decisions and weathering economic storms.

    • Focusing on making money and living frugally for practicality and financial sustainabilityGary Vaynerchuk emphasizes the importance of financial sustainability and living frugally for entrepreneurs, while warning against the glamorized culture of entrepreneurship and encouraging individuals to define their own version of success.

Practicality and financial sustainability are crucial for entrepreneurs. Gary Vaynerchuk, who built his business, VaynerMedia, from a conference room with no rent, emphasizes the importance of being willing to live frugally and focusing on making money. He warns against the glamorized culture of entrepreneurship and encourages individuals to define their own version of success. It's important to note that wealth does not necessarily equate to happiness, and it's essential to reverse engineer one's goals and figure out what level of monetization and creativity is needed to achieve personal fulfillment.

    • Entrepreneurship: Beyond Financial GainSuccess in entrepreneurship isn't only about profits, it's about passion, personal growth, and practicality. Anyone can succeed regardless of background or circumstances, but be aware of the challenges and responsibilities.

Entrepreneurship is not just about financial gain, but also about passion and personal growth. The speaker shares his own experience of leaving potential profits on the table because he cherishes the journey and the freedom it brings him. He emphasizes that success in business doesn't care about one's background or circumstances, and encourages everyone to focus on practicality and deep conversations about their goals. The speaker also raises awareness about the less glamorous side of entrepreneurship, such as the pressure and stress that can lead some entrepreneurs to suicide. Ultimately, he encourages people to pursue their entrepreneurial dreams, but also to be aware of the challenges and responsibilities that come with it.

    • Controllable Factor for Success: Work EthicSuccess depends on work ethic, self-awareness, and commitment to extreme effort and dedication.

Work ethic is the only controllable factor in achieving success. Gary Vaynerchuk emphasizes that despite DNA and circumstances, the only thing that can be fully controlled is the amount of effort and dedication put into building a business or career. He encourages self-awareness and matching actions to ambitions, warning that creating significant wealth requires an extreme level of commitment and hard work. Vacations and work-life balance may come later, but the price for reaching the level of success Vaynerchuk has achieved is high. Ultimately, he advises against striving for that level of ambition unless one is fully committed to the all-in grind.

    • From ideas to actionFocus on executing ideas and taking risks, rather than just talking about them. Understand your own price for success and prioritize action over talk.

Success is not just about having great ideas, but also about executing them and being willing to pay the price. The speaker emphasizes that while he has had many ideas, what truly matters is the action taken to bring those ideas to life. He encourages young people to focus on working hard and taking risks, rather than just talking about their ideas. The speaker also highlights the importance of understanding oneself and one's own price for success. He shares his own experience of working for years before starting to speak publicly about business, and encourages others to prioritize action over talk. Ultimately, the speaker believes that talent and the ability to take risks and take credit for one's accomplishments are crucial components of success.

    • Taking calculated risks for growth and innovationEmbrace calculated risks for growth and innovation, even if it means short-term losses. Stay competitive by embracing new technologies like VR, which have the potential to disrupt industries and create new opportunities.

Taking calculated risks is essential for growth and innovation, even if it means experiencing some failures along the way. Gary Vaynerchuk emphasized this during a talk, sharing his own experiences of taking risks at VaynerMedia, which led to significant revenue growth, albeit with substantial losses in the short term. He also highlighted the importance of staying competitive and embracing new technologies, like Virtual Reality (VR), which have the potential to disrupt industries and create new opportunities. VR, in particular, is compared to the early days of the Internet and is expected to revolutionize consumer behavior in the coming decades. By taking risks and embracing new technologies, businesses can stay ahead of the curve and position themselves for long-term success.

    • Navigating the evolving digital world and balancing work and family lifeUnderstand individual needs and find a balance that works best for each person in the digital age, prioritizing presence and engagement in meaningful connections

The digital world is constantly evolving, and while some companies may continue to thrive, new innovations could disrupt the status quo. The future may bring about a world where physical movement is less necessary, but it's also important to remember that people's experiences and needs are unique. Regarding parenting and work-life balance, it's essential to remember that what works for one family may not work for another. While some may struggle with the fear of losing loved ones, others may prioritize quality time over quantity. It's crucial to understand that memory and the brain work in complex ways, and it's essential to find a balance that works best for each individual. Additionally, it's essential to recognize that being present and engaged in the moment, whether it's through technology or face-to-face interactions, is key to building meaningful connections and experiences.

    • Focus on positivity and gratitude for a fulfilling lifeEmbrace positivity and gratitude to unlock success and happiness, shift focus from negative to positive, and seek help if struggling with self-confidence.

Positivity and gratitude are essential keys to unlocking success and achieving happiness in life. The speaker emphasized that it may be challenging to sell positivity in a negative political climate, but it's important to focus on the ultimate goal of finding happiness. He shared his belief that people often dwell on negative things and urged the audience to shift their focus towards the positive. The speaker also expressed empathy towards those struggling with self-confidence and encouraged them to seek help if needed. Ultimately, he emphasized that everyone deserves to feel good about themselves and that positivity and gratitude are essential ingredients for a fulfilling life.

    • Two types of intelligence for success in businessBoth emotional and intellectual intelligence are vital for business success. Prioritize developing skills in both areas for a well-rounded approach to career growth.

Both emotional intelligence (EQ) and intellectual intelligence (IQ) are essential for success in business. According to Gary Vaynerchuk, founder of VaynerMedia, people often fall into one of two categories: those who excel in EQ and those who excel in IQ. He emphasizes that while personality and emotional intelligence are important, they must be coupled with strong intellectual skills. Vaynerchuk shares that in the past, he prioritized EQ in his organization, but as it grew, he recognized the need for a meritocracy that values both EQ and IQ. And while some businesses may prioritize EQ over IQ, it's crucial to understand that most businesses hire based on skills and intellectual abilities. To succeed, individuals should focus on developing both their emotional and intellectual intelligence.

    • Embrace control and make the most out of every situationTake responsibility for your happiness and success, adopt a growth mindset, have a long-term goal, learn from mistakes, focus on what you can control, and practice gratitude.

Individuals have the power to take control of their own lives and make the most out of every situation, no matter how difficult or seemingly insurmountable. The speaker emphasizes the importance of taking responsibility for one's own happiness and success, and encourages a mindset of continuous learning and adaptation. He shares personal examples of how he applied this mindset to entrepreneurship, social media, and other areas of his life, and emphasizes the importance of having a long-term, macro goal to guide one's actions. Ultimately, the speaker encourages a growth mindset and a willingness to take risks and learn from mistakes. He also emphasizes the importance of perspective and gratitude, and encourages individuals to focus on what they can control and make the best of it.

    • The Need for Attention and Connection as a Fundamental Human NeedSuccessful entrepreneur Gary Vaynerchuk emphasizes the importance of embracing the need for attention and connection for personal and professional growth. He uses his platform to give and receive attention, and offers immersive learning experiences through his consulting product, the '4 D's'.

Gary Vaynerchuk, a successful entrepreneur and media executive, believes that the desire for attention and connection is a fundamental human need, just like the need to cook or sing. He uses his platform to give back and receive attention, which fuels his motivation and success. He's not afraid to put himself out there, and he values the positive impact he has on others' lives. VaynerMedia, his company, offers a consulting product called the "4 D's" or "Daily Digital Deep Dive," which has been successful in providing immersive learning experiences for clients. Vaynerchuk emphasizes the importance of embracing the need for attention and connection, and using it as a driving force for personal and professional growth.

    • Learn from Gary Vaynerchuk's 4 D's business programGary Vaynerchuk's 4 D's business program offers personalized sessions for business owners to fix, grow, and expand their businesses, resulting in significant revenue increases for some.

The "4 D's" business program created by Gary Vaynerchuk is making a significant impact on small and medium-sized businesses. The program, which can be found on Vaynermedia.com or GaryVaynerchuk.com under events, offers personalized sessions for business owners to fix, grow, and expand their businesses. The results have been impressive, with some business owners reporting revenue increases from 280,000 to 2,200,000. The Most Important Question In Business

The Most Important Question In Business

Here’s the problem most people run into when they create content online: They think they have to have something to say. So many of you aren’t putting out content online because you think you need to have the perfect message, or something “valuable” to share (based on your own arbitrary opinion). And what I’m telling you is, you will get more business if you put out literally anything. If you’re an auto dealer, you could put out a 5 min video every afternoon just recapping what happened in your day. If you’re a real estate agent, you could post updates on what your opinions are about the Super Bowl teams. Get on social media and tell your truth … it’s really that simple.

Beauty, Burnout, and Bitcoin with the Original Influencer, Michelle Phan

Michelle Phan was a creator and influencer far before those were even a thing. In 2007, while working as a waitress and struggling to make ends meet to attend art school, Michelle began posting beauty tutorials on YouTube. Her infectious personality and creativity quickly garnered her millions of subscribers. She went on to found IPSY in 2011, a beauty sample subscription service that was valued at $800 million dollars in 2015. She also was one of the first creators ever to launch her own product line, which she did in 2013, launching EM Cosmetics in partnership with L'Oreal.

Michelle has received countless accolades, including being named to Forbes 30 under 30 and Fast Company's 100 Most Creative People. Yet, the demands of all of Michelle's fans and business partnerships, as well as the vanity as a beauty industry, led her to burn out in 2016. Faced with a choice of her career or her mental health, Michelle chose herself. She took a digital hiatus that shocked her millions of fans.

In 2017, Michelle came back to the public eye, but this time on her own terms. She exited IPSY and purchased EM Cosmetics from L'Oreal, relaunching it with full creative control and ownership. Today, she is completely self-funded and contract free for the first time in her more than decade long career. On this episode, Michelle talks about the importance of creative control and learning to say "no".
