When Texas Went After Transgender Care, Part 2

    enApril 21, 2022

    Podcast Summary

    • A Texas custody battle over a transgender child's care ignites a heated political debateThe complexities and challenges of supporting transgender youth, including family disagreements and political debates, require sensitive handling and understanding from all parties involved.

The story of a contentious custody battle in Texas between two divorcing parents over the care of their transgender child, Luna, ignited a heated political battle in the state. The parents, Anne Georgioulias and Jeff Younger, had different approaches to handling Luna's gender identity. Anne, a pediatrician, supported Luna's wish to live as a girl and planned to take her to Genesis, the only clinic in Texas providing medical care for transgender youth. Jeff, however, was opposed and publicly shared his stance, leading to a custody battle and eventually, a state-wide debate on the care and wellbeing of transgender youth. This story highlights the complexities and challenges that families and medical professionals face when navigating the care and support of transgender youth, and the potential political ramifications of such personal struggles.

    • Custody Battle Over Transgender Child Sparks Controversy and LegislationA Texas jury ruled in favor of a mother allowing her transgender son to continue his gender transition, sparking outrage and leading to new legislation targeting transgender rights, particularly those affecting trans youth, in Republican-controlled statehouses.

The custody battle between Jeff Younger and his ex-wife over their transgender son, Luna, has become a focal point in the ongoing debate over transgender rights and parental rights. Jeff, who rejects Luna's identification as a girl, gained attention as a "folk hero" on the right, attracting interviews and support from high-profile Republicans. However, a jury ruled in favor of Luna's mother, granting her custody and allowing her to continue the child's transition. This decision sparked outrage on the right, with politicians vowing to protect parents and children from what they view as harmful gender ideologies. The controversy has led to a wave of legislation targeting transgender rights, particularly those affecting trans youth, in Republican-controlled statehouses across the country. The debate highlights the deeply divisive nature of the issue and the potential for it to shape political agendas in the coming years.

    • Bills limiting transgender rights face oppositionDespite some states pushing for laws restricting transgender athletes and care, opposition has prevented passage in many cases, indicating a challenge for enactment in Texas.

Despite several states passing or proposing legislation limiting transgender athletes and gender affirming care for minors, the bills have faced opposition and have not all been passed into law. In Texas, a high-profile case involving a father's testimony against gender affirming care for his child failed to gain enough support for the bill to pass. Governor Greg Abbott, a Republican, is facing pressure from his party to take action on this issue, but the failure of these bills in other states may indicate a challenge for him in implementing such legislation. The debate around these issues highlights the complexities and controversies surrounding gender identity and healthcare for trans youth.

    • Political Pressure Threatens to Shut Down Transgender Clinic in TexasGovernor Abbott's opposition to gender-affirming care for transgender youth could lead to the closure of a clinic in Dallas, raising concerns for those who rely on the service.

Texas Governor Greg Abbott is taking steps to potentially shut down a clinic that provides gender-affirming care for young transgender individuals in the state. The clinic, Genesis, is housed in a children's hospital in Dallas but is technically under the purview of the state due to its affiliation with the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center. Governor Abbott has been vocal about his opposition to such care, and recordings obtained by a news outlet reveal that hospital executives were under pressure to shut down the clinic due to this political pressure. Holly and Grayson, two individuals who use the services of the clinic, have been closely monitoring the situation and express concern about the future of the clinic. The outcome of this situation remains to be seen, but it highlights the political tensions surrounding the provision of gender-affirming care for transgender youth.

    • Texas Governor's Decision to Shut Down Transgender Clinic Sparks ControversyThe Texas governor's decision to shut down a clinic providing gender-affirming care to transgender children raised ethical concerns and sparked controversy, with families and doctors fearing for the well-being and rights of affected children.

The Genesis clinic, which provides gender-affirming care to transgender children in Texas, faced closure due to the directive of the governor and state officials. This decision was met with concern from doctors, families, and patients, who felt an ethical responsibility to continue providing this necessary care. The clinic was eventually forced to stop accepting new patients and eventually shut down entirely. The governor's actions also included an order to investigate gender-affirming care as child abuse, causing alarm and fear among affected children and families. These actions set a concerning precedent and raised questions about the well-being and rights of transgender children in Texas.

    • Texas Governor's Directive Labels Gender-Affirming Care as Child AbuseThe Texas Governor's directive could result in families being investigated for providing gender-affirming care to their transgender children, causing fear and uncertainty and hindering access to necessary medical care.

The Governor of Texas, Greg Abbott, has issued a directive labeling gender-affirming care for minors as child abuse, which could result in families being investigated and potentially separated. This directive, temporarily blocked by state courts, has left families terrified and uncertain, as anyone interacting with their children could potentially report them. Families are now hesitant to seek medical care due to the fear of mandated reporters. Holly, a mother in Texas, shares her experience of the fear and uncertainty she feels when seeking medical care for her transgender son, Grayson. Despite the temporary block, families continue to face this fear and uncertainty, unsure of what the future holds.

    • A parent's thoughtful approach to trans youth's gender-affirming careParents prioritize their child's well-being, consider resources and options, and make informed decisions, despite political climate and personal doubts.

The decision to pursue gender-affirming care for trans youth is a complex and thoughtful process for parents, not a political statement. This discussion highlights the concerns and considerations of a parent who is supportive of trans rights but also wants to make an informed decision for her child's well-being. The lack of resources and options for minorities and those of lesser financial abilities adds to the urgency and gravity of this situation. The fear of voicing doubts or concerns in the current political climate is understandable, but it's essential to remember that every parent approaches medical decisions for their child with serious consideration and care. The worst-case scenarios and potential risks should be weighed against the benefits, and it's crucial to understand that this process is not about fostering a political agenda but about doing what's best for the child.

    • Parental rights vs. political interference in gender-affirming care for minorsConservative parents want control over their children's care, but conservative politicians challenge this, creating a complex debate requiring respect for parents' rights, scientific inquiry, and open conversation.

The debate surrounding gender-affirming care for minors is a complex issue with deeply held beliefs on both sides. Parents, including conservative ones, believe they should have the right to make decisions regarding their children's well-being. This belief aligns with the broader conservative movement's emphasis on parental rights. However, the situation becomes contradictory when conservative politicians, like Abbott in Texas, challenge parents' decisions and instead focus on providers and pharmaceutical companies. Moderate Republicans argue they are acting in the best interest of young people, as there is still a lack of scientific understanding and data on the long-term effects of gender-affirming care. Doctors and medical professionals, on the other hand, advocate for continued research and data collection to answer pressing questions in this field. Ultimately, this issue requires candid conversation, scientific inquiry, and respect for parents' rights to make decisions for their children.

    • The debate on gender-affirming care for minors: More research or restrictions? The ongoing debate around gender-affirming care for minors requires more research and data collection while ensuring access to crucial services for those in need. International approaches suggest a measured, data-driven approach with a focus on mental health support and rigorous clinical trials.

The ongoing debate around gender-affirming care for minors is complex, and there are differing opinions on how to approach it. While some argue for more research and data collection, others fear that restrictions on care could limit access to crucial services for those in need. The latest move by Florida to restrict such care, citing a lack of sufficient data, has been criticized by clinicians as a bad faith argument that doesn't bring us any closer to answering the questions we need answers to. Meanwhile, international approaches suggest a more measured, data-driven approach with a focus on mental health support and rigorous clinical trials. Ultimately, the need for more information and understanding on this issue is clear, and it's essential to ensure that young people receive the necessary care and support while we work towards finding answers.

A Patchwork of Transgender Healthcare Laws Push Families Across State Lines
When Utah passed a ban on gender-affirming care for people younger than 18, Kat and their family had to make a tough choice. Should they uproot their lives and leave the state?

Kat is 14 and transgender. The Utah law banned the medical care that Kat was considering.

Around 20 states have passed similar laws — meaning many families could face the same tough decision: whether to leave their homes and where to go. Often it's to a state like Minnesota, where elected officials have protected trans health care for patients and providers.

We speak with reporters Saige Miller from KUER in Salt Lake City and Dana Ferguson, a political reporter with Minnesota Public Radio to hear how this patchwork of laws in both states affects trans patients and their doctors.

    Florida Guts Trans Rights

    Florida Guts Trans Rights
At least fourteen states in the US have passed laws or policies that limit or restrict gender-affirming care for young people. Republican lawmakers claim the bills are meant to protect kids, but most medical groups say the treatment is safe, effective and potentially live-saving.

Even so, Republican leaders like Texas governor Greg Abbot compare gender-affirming care to child abuse. Meanwhile trans people, parents, and their supporters have protested outside of Republican controlled statehouses across the country.

Florida has targeted gender-affirming care more than most other states. And on Wednesday, Republican Governor Ron DeSantis signed the latest such bill into law. It's gotten to the point where some trans youth are leaving the state, rather than living under the ban.

Over the Binary (OTB) | Episode 8 | Autism and Gender Diversity

Over the Binary (OTB) | Episode 8 | Autism and Gender Diversity

For reasons not understood, gender-diverse people are three to six times as likely to be autistic as cisgender people. In Episode 8, Casey and Grace welcome special guest, Dr. Laurie Stephens, to discuss the connection of autism diagnoses among the gender-diverse population. Dr. Stephens is a developmental psychologist who has been working with children, teens, and young adults on the autism spectrum for over 25 years. She currently serves as The Help Group’s Senior Director of Autism and LGBTQ+ Programs.

Why this episode is relevant, especially for parents of transgender and non-binary children and for our fellow mental health clinicians

According to Spectrum, a prominent publisher of news and analysis about autism research, “People who do not identify with the sex they were assigned at birth are three to six times as likely to be autistic as cisgender people are, according to the largest study yet to examine the connection. Gender-diverse people are also more likely to report autism traits and to suspect they have undiagnosed autism.” NOTE: Researchers often use “gender diverse” as an umbrella term to describe people whose gender identities — such as transgender, non-binary or gender-queer — differ from the sex they were assigned at birth. Spectrum also reports “Nearly 70 percent of autistic gender-diverse adolescents say they need medical gender-related care, according to a small 2018 study, and 32 percent say their gender identity has been questioned because of their autism diagnosis.” As you watch/listen to Episode 8, you’ll discover why Dr. Stephens says — addressing fellow mental health clinicians: “If you work with the autistic population, you really need to be familiar with the gender diverse population. And if you work in the gender diverse world, you need to understand autism.”

    More about Dr. Laurie Stephens

Prior to her current position with The Help Group, Dr. Stephens served as the Director of Clinical Services for Education Spectrum for 12 years. She provided diagnostic and psycho-educational evaluations, individual and family therapy, social skills training, educational consultation and professional, academic and parent training. While working with her clients and their families, Dr. Stephens became extremely interested in the overlap between transgender, non-binary and gender-queer identifications among folks on the spectrum, as many of her clients began to reveal their authentic selves to her. Dr. Stephens’ passion led her to her current role overseeing all of Kaleidoscope’s programming and events. She has been instrumental in establishing a specialized diagnostic clinic for LGBTQ+ children, teens, and young adults who suspect they have an autism spectrum disorder.
