He uses humor to describe his feelings of being surrounded by a large group of men and the pressure he feels to be relatable and "feisty" rather than a "run of the mill king." While some found the game lengthy and repetitive, others appreciated the skill and strategy involved. Overall, the conversation highlights the potential enjoyment and camaraderie that can come from experiencing a live football match.

    • Struggling against younger opponentsAge and experience can help, but fitness and speed are crucial for staying competitive in a game.

Age and experience can be an advantage in a game, but physical fitness and speed can also be decisive factors. During a 5 a side soccer match, the speaker found himself struggling against younger opponents, feeling fragile and outmatched. Despite a few moments of skill and strategy, such as a turn inside an attacker, the team was ultimately outpaced and outmaneuvered. The speaker expressed feelings of shame and self-doubt, but also acknowledged the importance of recognizing the strengths and weaknesses of both the team and the opposition. The team's captain and star player, Dan, seemed to have realized that they were outclassed, and the speaker encouraged everyone to focus on improving their fitness and speed to better compete in future matches. The speaker also noted that the next few games would likely be challenging, as the opposing teams appeared to be faster and more skilled. Overall, the experience served as a reminder that age and experience are valuable, but physical abilities must also be prioritized to remain competitive.

    • Feeling out of place after a challenging eventParticipants in demanding activities may feel embarrassed, flat, and in need of recovery time after intense experiences.

The speaker in this conversation is expressing feelings of embarrassment and self-preservation after participating in a physically demanding event. He mentions feeling out of place and flat, possibly due to the high expectations and intensity of the experience. The speaker also expresses a sense of relief that he won't be playing in the final match and seems to be struggling to come down from the adrenaline rush. He expresses a desire to take some time to recover before engaging with the situation again. Overall, the conversation reveals the speaker's emotional response to the experience and his need for a break before moving forward.

    • The pressure of competition can bring feelings of aging and inadequacy.Competition can make us feel old and inadequate, but our worth is not defined by athletic abilities or accomplishments.

The experience of playing in a competitive sports event, despite the excitement and anticipation, can bring about feelings of aging and inadequacy when faced with younger, more agile opponents. The comfort of one's home can seem more appealing than the pressure to perform, leading to feelings of being "old" or "doddery." This realization can come as a shock, especially when one has held onto the belief that they could still compete at a high level. The fragility of life is highlighted in these moments, reminding us that everyone, regardless of age, faces their own challenges and limitations. It's important to remember that our worth is not defined by our athletic abilities or accomplishments, but rather by the people and things that bring us joy and fulfillment in our lives.

    • Finding motivation in adversityEven in tough times, maintaining a positive attitude and seeing the potential for a comeback can help turn things around.

Even in the face of adversity and defeat, it's important to maintain a positive attitude and turn negative situations around. The speaker in the conversation was feeling discouraged and resigned to failure, but with some encouragement from a friend, he was able to reframe his perspective and see the potential for turning things around. He recognized the irony of wearing a sponsored top from a company called Chateauvix during a low point, and used it as a source of motivation to push forward. The conversation ended with the speaker expressing his determination to turn things around and make the most of the situation, even if it meant starting from the bottom. The key takeaway is that no matter how difficult things may seem, there's always the possibility for a comeback, and maintaining a positive attitude can help make that a reality.

Self Belief is a System not a feeling - hosted by Dave Diggle

    Episode #67:

Believe it or not athletes more than most tend to suffer with low self esteem and low self belief, which sounds bizarre when you think just how cocky they can appear on the outside.

That is until you understand the 24/7 scrutiny they are constantly under today as they are expected to be always “available”.

Beyond their sporting performances where they are publicly judged, categorised and ranked, they are also open to constant assessment of their comments, their actions and their beliefs via social media. With the liberation of information accessibility that the internet and social media brings, it also brings having to be “on” constantly. This can increases our awareness of being inside the “fish bowl” and the athlete mode 24hrs a day.

This is manifesting a warped view of the athlete by the athlete as they become more externally referenced and less self assured.

Check out this episode of Brain in the Game, where I help rebalance this by showing key strategies in building a sustainable self belief.
