    Podcast Summary

    • Expert advice for finding love and happiness in relationshipsLove Life offers insights and guidance from a relationship expert for anyone seeking fulfilling relationships, emphasizing the importance of understanding masculine and feminine energy and providing personalized advice.

Matthew Hussey's new book, Love Life, offers guidance for anyone seeking love and happiness in their relationships. Hussey, an expert in relationship advice, shares insights from his 17-year career helping people find love. He acknowledges the struggle many face in finding fulfilling relationships, as opportunities and happiness are not the same thing. The book aims to serve as a copilot for those at any stage of life, even those who are frustrated, exhausted, or burned out from dating. The conversation between Hussey and the podcast host also touches on the importance of understanding masculine and feminine energy in relationships and offers personal advice from Hussey to the host. Overall, Love Life provides a nuanced and realistic approach to finding and maintaining healthy and fulfilling relationships.

    • Understanding Gender Differences in Love and RelationshipsWomen prioritize character and compatibility, while men seek partners who don't intimidate or validate them. Men struggle with societal expectations, and women deal with commitment issues.

The dynamics of finding love and dealing with relationship struggles differ for men and women in various ways. Women often express concerns about men's reluctance to commit, while men grapple with figuring out their worth and power in the face of changing societal expectations. Both genders are reevaluating what they value in a partner, with women focusing on choosing partners based on character and compatibility, and men seeking partners who don't intimidate them or offer a sense of validation. These shifts reflect the increasing importance of financial independence and personal growth in modern relationships.

    • Challenging societal norms in relationshipsIndividuals have the power to make conscious choices and value relationships based on personal happiness, not societal norms or expectations.

While there may be biological or psychological factors influencing relationships and attraction, individuals have the power to make conscious choices and value what truly brings them happiness. The speaker challenges the notion that successful women are biologically wired to only be attracted to men of higher status, as they can find fulfilling relationships with partners of lower or equal status. Similarly, successful men can also find happiness in relationships where they are not the primary breadwinner. Ultimately, individuals have the capacity to question societal norms and their own instincts to seek out what truly brings them peace and fulfillment in their relationships.

    • Values and priorities in relationships change over timeAs we gain life experiences, we may shift our priorities in relationships from excitement and chemistry to commitment and building a life together.

Our values and priorities in relationships can change over time. At a younger age, we may prioritize chemistry and excitement, but as we grow and gain life experiences, we may place greater importance on peace, commitment, and building a life with someone. This shift can be compared to the concept of the "first mountain" and "second mountain" in David Brooks' book, where the first mountain represents success and achievement, and the second mountain represents commitment and dedication. It's important to recognize that not everyone will make this transition, and there's no one-size-fits-all approach to relationships. However, striving for depth and happiness in our relationships, rather than just chasing external validation, can lead to greater fulfillment in the long run.

    • Shifting priorities from applause to joyFocusing on ego-driven desires can hinder happiness and authentic relationships. Prioritize joy and embrace depth over validation.

Focusing too much on ego-driven desires such as money, status, and attention can hinder our pursuit of true happiness and fulfilling relationships. The speaker shares her personal experience of shifting her priorities from seeking applause to prioritizing what brings her joy, even if it means receiving less attention. This concept can be applied to various aspects of life, including romantic relationships, where superficial displays of wealth or success may attract the wrong kind of partners. The speaker encourages letting go of the need for constant validation and embracing the depth and happiness that comes from authentic connections. Furthermore, the speaker promotes the use of the YNAB app, which can help individuals transform their relationship with money by adopting simple habits like giving every dollar a job and embracing true expenses. By prioritizing what truly matters and letting go of the need for external validation, we can find greater happiness and fulfillment in life.

    • Taking Control of Finances and RelationshipsYNAB helps prepare for unexpected expenses, while Hostinger offers an affordable solution for creating a professional website. Both emphasize the importance of making intentional choices for financial and personal growth.

We have more control over our money than we think and can prepare for unexpected expenses with the help of tools like YNAB. YNAB encourages setting money aside in advance and acknowledges that life's unexpected costs can make us feel guilty for spending. However, they emphasize that it's okay to move funds around as needed, and even suggest the idea of aging your money by spending less than you earn. Regarding relationships, the speaker challenges the notion that attraction is never a choice and that we have no control over who we fall in love with or the kind of relationship we end up in. Instead, they argue that while we may be wired to seek certain things, we can ultimately make choices that go against those urges and prioritize fulfillment over money or status. In terms of starting a website, Hostinger offers an affordable and user-friendly solution for individuals looking to create a professional website. With their AI website builder, logo creator, image generator, and heat map tool, even those new to web design can create a custom website with ease. The transition to Hostinger was seamless for the speaker, and the affordable price point includes a free domain name. Overall, the speaker emphasizes the importance of taking control of our finances and relationships, and encourages listeners to explore resources like YNAB and Hostinger to help them do so.

    • Questioning and challenging instinctsInstead of blindly trusting our instincts, we should question and challenge them to avoid unhappy paths and find fulfilling jobs, calmer lives, and sustainable work-life balance. Polarity in relationships can be beneficial, but it's important to recognize and celebrate each other's strengths and acknowledge the potential for polarity to shift.

While it's important to be aware of potential negative instincts, it's equally important to question and challenge them rather than blindly trusting them. Our instincts may lead us down unhappy paths or towards people who don't treat us well. Instead, we should strive to cultivate instincts that lead us towards more fulfilling jobs, calmer lives, and sustainable work-life balance. Regarding the concept of masculine and feminine energy, the speaker shares that it's not a concept they engage with in their personal relationship, but they acknowledge that polarity exists and can be beneficial in relationships. However, they don't believe that one polarity is necessary or that one partner must always be the decision-maker or leader in the relationship. Instead, they emphasize the importance of recognizing and celebrating each other's strengths and acknowledging the potential for polarity to shift depending on the situation. Overall, the speaker values empathy, understanding, and a positive outlook towards people and relationships.

    • Balancing Polarity and Personal Boundaries in RelationshipsIn relationships, it's important to allow for emotional expression and role flexibility while respecting personal boundaries and finding a balance that fosters self-preservation and growth.

While polarity can be an important aspect in relationships, it doesn't need to be a constant presence. Both partners should have the freedom to express different roles and emotions, but it's essential to ensure that each person's needs are met frequently enough. Regarding personal boundaries, compromise is necessary in a relationship, but it's not about always giving in to the other person's wishes. Both partners must respect each other's autonomy and personal boundaries while understanding that some compromises may be necessary. The key is finding a balance that allows both individuals to maintain their sense of self while fostering a healthy and fulfilling relationship.

    • Navigating discomfort in relationshipsEmpathize and communicate to understand discomfort, find solutions together, and prioritize partner's well-being for sustainable relationships.

Relationships can be complex, and sometimes one partner may want to do something that makes the other uncomfortable. It's essential to consider the underlying reasons for the discomfort and whether it's worth causing distress for a seemingly innocuous situation. Human beings have struggles and past traumas that can make us feel unsafe, and it's crucial to approach these situations with empathy and understanding. Instead of insisting on our way, we should aim to have open conversations about the root causes of the discomfort and work together to find solutions. These conversations can lead to corrective experiences and healing, as the partner may have a positive experience that challenges their past fears and helps them grow in the relationship. Ultimately, it's essential to prioritize the well-being of both partners and ensure that the relationship is sustainable for both parties.

    • Relationships as corrective experiencesUnderstand that jealousy or feelings of being unsafe may stem from unmet needs or past issues, and practice self-compassion to address them.

Relationships can serve as corrective experiences, helping us identify and address deeper emotional needs and patterns. Jealousy or feelings of being unsafe may not always be about the current situation, but rather a reflection of unmet needs or long-standing issues. Compassion towards oneself is crucial in navigating conflicting expectations, as it allows us to acknowledge past struggles and set healthy boundaries. By recognizing the root causes of our emotional responses and responding with self-compassion, we can create opportunities for growth and healing.

    • Communicate effectively with loved ones and partnersAcknowledge challenges, express needs, set healthy boundaries to strengthen bonds and create authentic, loving relationships.

Effective communication is key when dealing with complex family dynamics and relationships. When navigating challenging situations with both loved ones and partners, it's essential to enroll your partner as a teammate. This means acknowledging the challenges, expressing your needs, and setting healthy boundaries. By having an open and honest conversation, you can create a stronger bond with both parties and move towards a more authentic and loving relationship. It's important to remember that pleasing everyone all the time is not sustainable, and setting boundaries, even if they may initially cause discomfort, can ultimately lead to greater happiness and understanding for all involved.

    • Prioritizing Self-Love in RelationshipsPrioritizing self-love leads to deeper, intentional connections, transformation in relationships, and personal growth.

When we prioritize meeting our own needs and giving love without obligation or guilt, it leads to a deeper, more intentional connection with loved ones. This shift in energy can bring about a transformation in relationships, allowing both parties to experience more pure and meaningful love. This concept is not limited to parents but can apply to various relationships in our lives. It's a journey of healing and setting boundaries, which can be challenging but ultimately leads to personal growth and healthier relationships. Additionally, using tools like Grammarly can help improve communication skills and make daily tasks more efficient, allowing us to focus on building stronger connections with others.

    • Understanding familial duty and obligation in South Asian culturesRespecting familial duty is crucial in South Asian cultures, but individual agency and personal autonomy are also important. Generational trauma and change can lead to healing and growth.

While family dynamics and expectations can vary greatly from culture to culture, the importance of understanding and navigating the complexities of familial duty and obligation is universal. For individuals from South Asian backgrounds, there may be a stronger emphasis on respecting and prioritizing familial duty over personal relationships. However, it's essential to recognize that even within these structures, there can be room for individual agency and the exercise of personal autonomy. Generational trauma and the breaking of cycles of obligation can lead to healing and growth, and it's essential to remember that older generations may also surprise us with their capacity for change. Ultimately, it's about finding a balance between respecting the structures that have come before us and asserting our own personal freedoms and relationships.

    • Breaking free from generational cyclesStrive for personal growth and change, even if it's challenging and met with resistance, to inspire transformation for yourself and future generations.

We all have the potential to break free from generational cycles of automatic service and obligation, even if we didn't have that inspiration growing up. It's a brave and challenging thing to do, as the system will resist change. However, the rewards can be significant, not just for ourselves but also for future generations and potentially even those who came before us. This can lead to profound personal growth and transformation, and it's an inspiring thing to be the pioneer of change in your family. It's important to remember that not everyone is able to make that change, but for those who can, it can lead to unexpected and rewarding outcomes. The speaker shared a personal example of how inspiring his mother's transformation has been for him. Overall, the message is to not accept the status quo and instead strive for personal growth and change, even if it's difficult and met with resistance.

    • Focusing too much on others' happiness can be drainingRecognize that our actions don't fully control others' emotions, prioritize self-care, and bring our best selves to relationships

Focusing on making others happy at the expense of our own needs and wants can be a flawed approach. It's important to recognize that our actions do not have complete control over others' happiness and that their emotions are influenced by many factors beyond our control. Instead, we should aim to bring our best energy and model our best selves for the people we love. This means identifying the ways of living and operating that allow us to do so. Additionally, it's essential to remember that we are individuals with needs and wants, not just observers in the world. By acknowledging our own personhood and prioritizing our needs, we can live sustainably and effectively contribute to the happiness of those around us.

    • Recognize your role in self-careUnderstand that self-care is essential for personal growth and well-being, and take responsibility for nurturing yourself while also offering empathy and support to others.

We should include ourselves in the equation of love and care, recognizing that we are responsible for taking care of the unique human being that is ourselves. This realization shifts the focus from trying to feel special or comparing ourselves to others, to understanding that we each have a crucial role in nurturing our own potential and well-being. By taking our self-care seriously, we not only improve our own lives but also increase our capacity to give love and support to others. Additionally, it's important to remember that we're not responsible for others' happiness or unhappiness, and that their emotions are their own responsibility. Instead, we can offer empathy, understanding, and support when they're struggling.

    • Creating the conditions for happiness in relationshipsWe cannot make someone else happy, but we can take responsibility for creating the conditions for their happiness in our relationships.

While we may not be directly responsible for another person's emotions, we can be accountable for the role we play in their happiness. If our actions have caused unhappiness, it's important to consider the value we place on the relationship and take corrective measures to help create the conditions for their happiness. We cannot make someone else happy, but if we want to keep them in our lives, we must make creating the conditions for their happiness our responsibility. The book discussed in the conversation is aimed at anyone who wants to find love, recover from lost love, or learn to be happier in any stage of life. It provides practical tools for navigating the ups and downs of love and relationships, and invites readers to see themselves as co-pilots on their journey to happiness.

    Lessons I’m Taking Into 2022 - Season 1 Roundup

As the first season of the podcast draws to a close I look back at some of the most inspiring moments from the season including from conversations with Ben Francis, Krissy Cela, Chris Williamson, Unjaded Jade, Mrwhosetheboss and Dr Grace Lordan.

One of the biggest lessons I've learned from all the guests who've appeared this season is that we should embrace uncertainty and the idea of having a plan is a bit of a myth because really we're all working things out as we go along.

I also want to say a big thank you if you've tuned into the podcast each week and an even bigger thank you if you've left a review on apple podcasts and subscribed because that really does help other people hear about the podcast. I hope you enjoy this season round-up and I'll see you in season 2.

Hasan Kubba is my business coach and the author of the business book of the year 2021 ‘The Unfair Advantage: How You Already Have What It Takes To Succeed’. In the conversation we talk about some of the concepts in his book as well as having a mini coaching session so you can apply coaching frameworks to your own life without needing to hire a coach yourself. We talk about realising your limiting beliefs, productivity, confidence and finish by chatting through some of my current predicaments about writing my book.
