    Podcast Summary

    • The importance of being open-minded to changeBeing open-minded to change can lead to improvements, even if past practices seem strange or outdated. Embrace change for a better future and make the most of resources with wallet-friendly finds and financial rewards.

Being open-minded is crucial for progress and shaping a better future. Throughout history, people have changed their beliefs and practices for the better, even if they may seem strange or outdated to us today. For instance, the medieval practice of trial by ordeal, which involved testing a person's guilt by throwing them into water, may seem absurd now. However, it shows that being open to change and new ideas can lead to improvements. In our present-day lives, it's essential to keep an open mind and be willing to reconsider our current beliefs and practices. This episode of LIFE KIT will teach you how to do just that. Additionally, hosting a celebratory brunch for less is another way to embrace change and make the most of your resources. With wallet-friendly finds from 365 by Whole Foods Market, like cold smoked Atlantic salmon, mini quiches, organic everything bagels, and more, you can create a delicious and memorable brunch without breaking the bank. Plus, visit the floral department for a beautiful bouquet to jazz up your table. When the occasion calls for a perfect brunch, head to your local Whole Foods Market. • Understanding Open-mindedness: More Than Meets the EyeBeing open-minded means considering other perspectives, but not all perspectives deserve our open-mindedness. Implicit biases can influence our thoughts and behaviors without our awareness, and recognizing this is the first step towards being more open-minded. The Implicit Association Test can help reveal hidden biases.

Open-mindedness is more complex than we might think. While it's a highly valued trait, we may not always live up to it. Open-mindedness doesn't mean having no opinions or changing your mind all the time. Instead, it means being willing to consider other perspectives. However, not every perspective deserves our open-mindedness. We should be cautious about considering perspectives that are dehumanizing, racist, or disconnected from reality. Moreover, we often overestimate how open-minded we truly are. Our brains are wired to have implicit biases, which can influence our thoughts and behaviors without our conscious awareness. These biases can be at odds with how we want to think. Recognizing this is the first step towards being more open-minded. By acknowledging that our brains can trick us and that we all have implicit biases, we can begin to work on being more honest and aware of our thought processes. The Implicit Association Test (IAT) is a tool that can help us reveal some of these hidden biases. It's important to remember that taking the test is not an indictment of our character, but rather an opportunity to gain insight into our subconscious thoughts. Being open-minded is a continuous process, and recognizing the existence of implicit biases is an essential first step towards becoming more open-minded.

    • Our perception is not a direct representation of realityOur brains make inferences from limited data, our understanding is not perfect, and being open-minded means recognizing this and being curious.

Our perception of the world is not a direct representation of reality, but rather an interpretation drawn from the complex information we receive through our senses. Hermann von Helmholtz argued that our brains make inferences from the world based on the limited data we receive through our senses, such as our retinas. This means that our understanding of the world is not a perfect reflection of reality, and being open-minded requires recognizing this and being willing to engage with new and surprising ideas. To be open-minded, it's important to first be curious. Curiosity exposes gaps in our memory or knowledge and motivates us to seek out new information. Psychologists like Charan Ranganath study curiosity through research on openness to experience and novelty seeking. By recognizing that our perception of the world is not perfect and embracing curiosity, we can be more open to new ideas and broaden our understanding of the world around us.

    • Curiosity triggers dopamine productionCuriosity, not the answer itself, can increase dopamine production and motivate us to explore new ideas and perspectives

The feeling of curiosity and not knowing the answer to a question can trigger a response in the brain that increases dopamine production. This motivates us to seek out the answer, but it's not necessarily the answer itself that produces the dopamine. Instead, it's the state of curiosity that triggers the response. This can lead us to explore new ideas and perspectives, even when faced with complex moral questions or deeply held beliefs. For example, Celeste, a journalist, changed her mind about the death penalty after a long walk to work during a rare snow day in Portland, Oregon. Instead of arguing or getting defensive, she chose to stay curious and question her own beliefs. This curiosity led her to explore new perspectives and ultimately change her mind.

    • Changing beliefs through open-minded dialogueStay calm, curious and open to new information and experiences to challenge beliefs and reduce implicit biases.

Our minds are capable of changing, even on complex and intense topics like the death penalty, as long as we stay calm and curious. Celeste's story demonstrates this, as she was able to challenge her beliefs and learn new things about herself through open-minded dialogue with her friends. Additionally, research shows that implicit biases, which are harder to control, are also changing on certain topics. For instance, there has been a significant decrease in implicit bias towards gay people and racial minorities since 2007. Therefore, it's essential to remain open to new information and experiences, even when it's challenging or uncomfortable, and to surround ourselves with people who encourage curiosity and growth.

    • Our changing attitudes towards sexualitySeek out diverse perspectives and experiences, broaden social circles, and avoid getting too stuck in ways of thinking to challenge implicit biases towards sexuality.

Our attitudes towards sexuality are rapidly changing due to increased interaction and integration between gay and straight individuals. This is in contrast to other biases, such as those related to disability, age, and weight, which are not changing as quickly. The reason for this shift is that we are less segregated along the dimension of sexuality compared to other dimensions. To be open-minded, it's not just about personal effort, but also about the people and environments around us. If we want to challenge our implicit biases, we should seek out diverse perspectives and experiences. Additionally, we should be aware of the ways in which our worlds may be unintentionally segregated and make an effort to broaden our social circles. Lastly, it's important to avoid getting too stuck in our ways of thinking and to practice seeing multiple perspectives. By doing so, we can challenge our brains' tendency to simplify complex issues and make more informed, open-minded decisions.

    • Practicing Open-Mindedness: Embrace Discomfort and Uncertainty for Personal GrowthEmbrace discomfort and uncertainty to gain new insights, challenge assumptions, and expand horizons through open-mindedness

Practicing open-mindedness involves being honest about cognitive biases, maintaining curiosity even when uncomfortable, calming the mind to be receptive, and seeking out diverse perspectives. Open-mindedness can lead to personal growth and a better understanding of the world. It's the willingness to challenge assumptions and consider new possibilities. The speaker emphasizes that the benefits, such as the "wow, my God experience" of being wrong, make the effort worthwhile. Open-mindedness is essential for imagining a better future and adapting to change. Remember, being open-minded means being willing to subject yourself to discomfort and uncertainty to gain new insights. It's about being curious, calm, and receptive to new ideas, even when they challenge your beliefs. So, be open to learning, even when it's not pleasant, and surround yourself with diverse perspectives to expand your horizons.

    • The impact of unchecked conspiracy theoriesThe spread of unchecked conspiracy theories can have severe consequences, as seen in Stockton, CA, and local news outlets may inadvertently contribute to this issue. Insights into human decision-making can be gained from BBC documentaries and NPR's Choiceology podcast.

The proliferation of unchecked conspiracy theories can have serious consequences, as demonstrated in the case of a website in Stockton, California. This issue is further complicated when local news outlets may even inadvertently encourage the spread of such theories. On a different note, understanding the psychology and economics behind people's decisions can provide valuable insights, as explored in the BBC's documentaries and NPR's Choiceology podcast. These thought-provoking series offer a deeper dive into various topics, allowing listeners to engage with complex ideas in a more immersive way.

BMI is flawed. Try a body composition test

BMI is flawed. Try a body composition test
For decades, health experts have relied on body mass index (BMI), a ratio of weight to height, to classify people as underweight, normal weight, overweight or obese. But sometimes, you need more than two numbers to understand your health. For example, BMI can't tell you how much of your weight is fat versus muscle. That's why a growing number of researchers and physicians prefer other metrics instead. NPR health correspondent Allison Aubrey breaks down the history and shortcomings of BMI, and shares other methods to get a fuller picture of your body.

    Bluemercury: Marla and Barry Beck

    Bluemercury: Marla and Barry Beck

The story of Bluemercury is packed with business lessons—for starters, it’s always good to have a backup plan. That’s what Marla and Barry Beck discovered in 1999, when they realized their startup online cosmetics business was going nowhere fast. They begged the bank for a second loan so they could invest in a brick-and-mortar store in Washington, D.C., and Bluemercury was born. More lessons followed: as they grew, they distinguished themselves by offering high-end brands and personalized service, and by locating stores in fashionable urban neighborhoods, not malls. Today, Bluemercury is owned by Macy’s, with nearly 200 locations across the U.S. And Barry and Marla—who got married somewhere around the launch of store 4—raised three children along the way.
