13 Reasons Why Kids Don't Listen with Jen Lumanlan

13 Reasons Why Kids Don't Listen with Jen Lumanlan

With my guest, a fellow podcaster, mom and parent coach Jen Lumanlan we took a deep dive into the many reasons (13 to be exact) why children don’t listen, offered explanations and suggestions on exactly what to do about each one.

    It’s super practical and helpful.

Jen is the host of the Your Parenting Mojo podcast. She has created a handy infographic, whcih you can download at www.yourparentingmojo.com/authenticparenting

We need to change the way we look at our kids' behaviors, ask better, more useful questions instead of moving through parenting on autopilot.

Every Memory Deserves Respect: Finding Healing With EMDR Therapy with Michael Baldwin

Every Memory Deserves Respect: Finding Healing With EMDR Therapy with Michael Baldwin

    WRANING

The following episode contains content that may be triggering to some listeners. Please check the show notes for more detailed descriptions and take care of yourself.

It contains discussions of complex trauma, the depiction of traumatic events, graphic descriptions of violence against children with sounds of a beating, has references to emotional neglect, child abuse, sibling abuse, sexual abuse, bullying, dysfunctional family, and childhood trauma:

    Listener discretion is strongly advised.

With that said, the story that we unravel has a positive ending. It’s truly an incredible, compelling, and inspiring story about someone who experienced trauma during childhood and recovered from it with EMDR therapy.

All his life Michael suffered tremendously from the effects of trauma. He experienced severe symptoms, fears and phobias and felt lost, like he had nothing, that he was nothing. He developed survival strategies to cope with his pain.

At the age of sixty-one, despite years of therapy, he was no closer to understanding why so many things that came effortlessly to others were impossible for him: sustaining a relationship or a career, even using public bathrooms. In 2017 when he started EMDR therapy he had such severe symptoms that his life felt like a prison.

    Parenting for Peace

    Parenting for Peace

I truly believe that we can create a peaceful world through parenting. Thank you for joining me on that mission and thank you for doing your part. I see you, I recognize you, I honor you! And most of all, I celebrate you.

To begin the new year, I bring you a bouquet of inspiration and insight to help you start the year great! To motivate you, and ignite a spark in you to be the best version of yourself so that you can show up authentically in the world and offer the gift of you to your children and loved ones. Wherever you are on the path towards wholeness, I want you to know that you are not alone, and that you have an ally. The podcast, myself and our diverse, global community of like-minded people are behind you.

I have put together a mega compilation episode—short clips from almost every episode from the past year.

I love the symbolism -it is by looking back, we live forward.

As you listen you might notice that I have put them together thematically to the best of my ability and had to dissect just the right clip for the purpose. I had a lot of fun!

The year 2022 was one of my favorite years of podcasting in 7 years, and I wanted to remember it.

The Power of Vulnerability to Create Intimacy

The Power of Vulnerability to Create Intimacy

Allowing oneself to be vulnerable with another person can be exceedingly difficult yet rewarding as it leads to more closeness and intimacy.

Can asking another person a structured set of questions really help two people deepen closeness and boost intimacy or fall in love?

We are exploring the famous 36 questions to fall in love experiment.

The so-called 36 questions to fall in love are a set of questions developed in the 1990s by psychologists Arthur Aron, Ph.D., Elaine Aron, Ph.D., and other researchers to see if two strangers can develop an intimate connection just from asking each other a series of increasingly personal questions.

The 36 questions in the study are broken up into three sets, with each set intended to be more probing than the previous one.

If you are looking to strengthen your relationship with your spouse, deepen your connection with your friend or romantic partner, reconnect emotionally with someone, fall in love with someone new, boost intimacy and closeness give the 36 questions a try.

    Remember, vulnerability is not weakness.

Raising Kids While Doing Your Own Work

Raising Kids While Doing Your Own Work

Can a podcast change someone's life or the way they parent? Listen as Ligia, one of my loyal and most dedicated listeners shares her expereince having consumed the ENTIRE 7 years worth of the content of this podcast.

Ligia became a mom at age 41. She is a mom to a 9 year old girl who has been diagnosed with type 1 diabetes.

    • What lessons has she learned?
    • How has her life changed? In what ways has she grown?
    • What concrete things has she applied from the show into her own parenting? Has she seen results? Was it all worth it in the end?
    • Has she gotten tired of me and my voice?
    • Where is she now and what is next for her?

Here is a quote from this epsiode:

"Great parenting begins with knnowing who you are."

The hardest part about parenting is NNOT parenting. It's dowing your own work, while raising kids.

Please enjoy and remember doing your own work while parenting is hard. Stay on course, be gentle and easy on yourself. It’s a worthwhile journey. Continue learning and growing, and pause to recognize and celebrate your wins along the way.

(Special) Should Kids Do Chores-Part 2

(Special) Should Kids Do Chores-Part 2

This is Part 2 of a two part show.

We took a deep dive into the topic of chores. In the first part we talked about our feelings about the word-chores, shared our own experiences of growing up doing chores, unpacked the why of assigning chores to kids, started a discussion of ages and development and expectations and answered a listener question.

As well as, we talked about the importance of parental attitude, engaging kids seamlessly into the process using playfulness and teaching crucial lessons and life-long skills, like responsibility and helpfulness and imparting our values without control.

In this part we continue the discussion of what kids are capable of doing at different ages, we both share how we do chores with our own kiddos, answer some fantastic listener questions, talk about intrinsic and extrinsic motivation, and tell you what we think about paying kids for doing chores. A super-packed, useful and really helpful episode sprinkled with humor and fun.
