    2.16: American Birkebeiner PART TWO

This is how our Cross-Country Ski trip on the American Birkebeiner went down. We immersed ourselves in the fun and frustrating aspects of beginning a new sport. And even though the weather was a freezing -5 degrees F most days, we still found ourselves enjoying the wooded trails for hours on end. In this episode we talk about:

    • relishing in the cold temperatures
    • how to stay warm in sub zero weather
    • knowing your body and personality enough to do what works for you
    • focusing on the 1%
    • learning new skills with a partner + how your S.O processes learning a new skill

2.15: XC Skiing on the American Birkebeiner PART ONE

2.15: XC Skiing on the American Birkebeiner PART ONE

On "When Your Sport Ends" we practice what we preach. During our episode "Fail to Succeed" this season, we recommended trying a new sport, hobby, career, etc. without the need to be the best right away. That is a hard feeling to get passed, but it is extremely important for growth in any realm of life.

We planned a 10 day trip to the American Birkebeiner in Hayward, Wisconsin to cross-country ski on the famous Birkie 100 kilometers of groomed trails. We are going to be learning XC Skate Ski (the form of skiing used for racing) for the next week, and decided to share our "Pre-Birkie" thoughts with you on this episode.

    We discuss:

    • Getting comfortable with being uncomfortable
    • Staying outside in subzero weather for hours at a time
    • Learning to be kind to yourself while learning a new skill
    • The excitement of learning a new sport with your partner
    • and more...

2.14: Flow State - What it is and How to Access it

2.14: Flow State - What it is and How to Access it

Flow state is commonly referred to in sports as being "In the Zone". That feeling of being "in the zone" is one that many athletes miss after their sports careers end. However, the benefits of flow state can easily be accessed outside of sports, and it will positively impact your life. We wanted to discuss Flow State on this episode to get you familiarized with the concept and its benefits!

    Key takeaways:

    • Flow State can be tapped into through breath work, hyper focusing on the task at hand, tuning out, and learning to truly tune in.
    • Flow state is typically accessed through movement, but it can be as easy as a yoga sequence flow to get there!
    • Be safe when practicing getting into a flow state and always be aware of your surroundings (ie: please don't try to get in the zone while dodging traffic)
    • Meditation and Flow State can increase productivity, longevity, and mental sharpness.

2.13: Meditation For A Healthy Life and Outlook

2.13: Meditation For A Healthy Life and Outlook

Often times when athletes talk about their transition out of college or professional sports, they mention the physical changes that occur. You’re no longer training for 4 hours a day every day, and your body will show that. But what about the changes that you can’t explicity see? The changes that might be negatively affecting your life, but that you can’t see and address immediately? We’re talking about the mental changes that occur during the transition out of being identified as an athlete.

The mind is our strongest muscle and the most important tool to navigating a healthy and happy life. For this episode we are diving into the benefits of meditation to strengthen your mind and body.

We discuss movement meditation, mindfulness meditation, the new Netflix series "Headspace", and how we've utilized meditation for a healthier life!

    2.12: Failure Leads to Success

    2.12: Failure Leads to Success

The secret to success is failure. We have interviewed 20 former collegiate and professional athletes over the course of this podcast, and one topic that continues to come up in our conversations with athletes is the importance of failing. The importance of being comfortable with failure.

As athletes we tend to put a lot of pressure on ourselves to perform, and when you’re used to being the best and winning in your chosen sport, failure isn’t always something you experience. The idea that failure means losing or not reaching your goal is completely wrong. When we talk about failing, we’re talking about the first step to learning, growing, and evolving.

Listen till the end to hear Don's advice on what to call "failure".(hint: don't call it "failure").

2.11: Recruitment Visits & How College Programs Are Changing

2.11: Recruitment Visits & How College Programs Are Changing

College athletic programs are getting less funding or getting cut all together. Two sports that are reoccurring in the news headlines for being cut or defunded are cross-country and swimming. Aka: the two sports we (Brooke and Don) competed in as Division 1 athletes in college. The realities for college athletes and high school athletes wanting to continue their sport in college is very different than it was a year ago. For this episode we decided to dive into the unfortunate circumstances that many high-school athletes are facing at this very moment. We also discuss the scope of sports in this ever changing landscape.

This is an episode meant for high school athletes looking at athletic programs. In particular we are going to discuss how we would handle the current situation knowing what we know now. We hope this offers a little bit of insight to our younger listeners. Reach out with any questions @whenyoursportends on Instagram

2.9: Treat Yourself - Why It's Worth It

2.9: Treat Yourself - Why It's Worth It

When you have training room ice baths, your coach telling you to roll out after practice, and your teammates to keep you accountable, recovery methods seem easy. But what about when your sport ends? Do you still put time towards self-care and recovery? On this episode Brooke and Don share their latest "treat yo'self" experience in Hot Springs National Park, Arkansas. Complete with thermal pool soaks, massages, and facials! It was a lavish experience, but not every self-care treatment needs to be.

Before being pampered Don and Brooke woke up early to run 13.1 miles around the National Park. In typical athlete mentality, they felt that a lavish recovery day should be earned after a grueling half-marathon. Full video recap of that run is available here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BrCm_YwMa9E

The best part about making time for recovery is that your body thanks you the next day! How do you recover and practice self-care? Let us know on Instagram @whenyoursportends

2.8: Surviving Spain's Lockdown & A Revitalized View on Working Out

How would you handle a complete quarantine lockdown for 6 weeks in a 1000 square foot apartment? Allie Bierhaus joins us to share how she kept her spirits high (hint: it involves running a 5k in her apartment!), re-framing her outlook on working out, finding new ways of movement, and more. Allie is a former collegiate athlete at Augustana College, and has been a primary school teacher in Madrid, Spain for the last five years. As new lockdowns, curfews, and stricter precautions are beginning to be in effect again, we talk to a pro at how to beat the quarantine blues.

Trust us, it's a conversation you won't want to miss! A word of caution though, you might get confused by the similarity of Allie and Brooke's voices on this episode....they are sisters after all ;)

2.7: Intuitive Eating and Learning Balance

This is the final installment of our 3 PART Conversation on our evolving relationships with food and eating habits as athletes, former collegiate athletes, and overall human beings. Don and Brooke have a dialogue on balanced eating and intuitive eating styles. The conversation is an easy back and forth detailing their current lifestyle practices and mind frames when it comes to food. The Thanksgiving holiday weekend, as well as the upcoming holiday season, has been on Don's mind so he discusses his mindset, eating habits, and workouts to stay healthy (but also eat Nana's baked goods for Christmas). Brooke has found balance over the last eight years of dealing with disordered eating, and she shares her healthier outlook on this episode.

2.6: Male Athlete Perspective on Eating Habits

Second episode of our THREE PART conversation on our relationship with food as athletes. This podcast focuses on the transition period out of training, competing, and identifying solely as an athlete, so we thought it was time to really dig into our own transition period when it comes to eating habits, eating disorders, and the mind body connection for a healthy relationship with food after sports. On this episode Don talks about his evolution with fueling his body during his swim career at the University of Texas, finding affordable options as a post-collegiate athlete and graduate student, and the important insights he learned after his weight fluctuated throughout the initial transition out of competing.

Stay tuned for next week's episode where we dive into our eating habits now!

2.5: Eating Disorders & Disordered Eating

2.5: Eating Disorders & Disordered Eating

First episode of a THREE PART DIALOGUE on our relationship with food as athletes. We are discussing food and eating habits both during your sport and when your sport ends. On this episode, Brooke shares her battle with an eating disorder and disordered eating during college running and after graduation. Nearly 10% of the American population has an eating disorder in their lifetime. Unfortunately a large percentage of those battling eating disorders are athletes, specifically female athletes. Both Brooke and Don felt this taboo topic needed to be discussed on today's episode, so Brooke is opening up and sharing her struggles with both disordered eating and an eating disorder, in a never before public discussion format with you.

TRIGGER WARNING: For those with an eating disorder please proceed with caution in listening to this episode, as many of the concepts brought up may be hard to listen to.

Please seek help if you or someone you know may be struggling with negative body image, an eating disorder, or disordered eating. Remember that growth comes from honest conversations held in a manner of love for the person who is struggling. Recovery can take years, so be kind to your mind, body, and spirit.

2.4: Is Joining A Club Team Right For You?

2.4: Is Joining A Club Team Right For You?

When your sport ends, it can be difficult to find that team aspect again. Many athletes look towards club teams or group sports where they can meet new people, train together, play together, and be integrated into a different community. If you've ever asked yourself: Should I join a club team? Then this is the episode for you!

For Don, he enjoyed aspects of club volleyball, rugby, basketball, and also joining a kickball league after he finished his collegiate career swimming at University of Texas. On the flip side, Brooke never felt compelled to join a league or club team after her running career ended at University of Iowa. The two discuss the ways in which joining a team again can be a good thing, whether it's the right choice for everyone, and what to look for if you are joining a team for the first time after ending your athletic career in your sport.

2.2: Benefits and Dangers of the "One More" Mentality

The psychology of athletes is a topic we love to discuss on When Your Sport Ends. In this episode we dive into the "One More" mentality many athletes have when it comes to training. "One More" is a driving mentality that molds athletes into Olympians, National Champions, State Champions, etc...but when does that "one more" mindset become dangerous? And how can we harness that "one more" mentality in our daily lives in a way that is productive and constructive?

Tracking Your Workouts Without Comparing to a Former You

Tracking Your Workouts Without Comparing to a Former You

Episode 25 covers the topic of tracking your workouts without comparing those workouts to a former you. Brooke and Don reference a former episode about Strava throughout the conversation, so if you're not familiar with Strava: An Athlete's Dilemma click the link to listen: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/strava-an-athletes-dilemma-when-your-sport-ends/id1497045578?i=1000478134376

Strava is a social media app that tracks your bike rides and running routes as a community focused platform. Don loves the segment aspect of Strava and even started doing a self-proclaimed "strata trolling" on the segments (listen to maybe start trying it yourself).

Brooke talks about the way she allowed herself to train without comparing her running splits and times to a faster version of herself from college. Don also had a mental battle with not judging his workouts too harshly via the Strava App.
