The film centers on a young genius girl named Matilda Wormwood, who develops psychokinetic abilities and uses them to deal with her disreputable family and Agatha Trunchbull, the ruthless, oppressive and tyrannical Principal of Crunchem Hall Elementary School - Wiki.

In this episode of Chapter One: Take Two Briana and Maddy discuss how meaningful books like Matilda are. It is so important that children are talked to about, what can be seen as, 'adult' issues because without this education children are unable to express themselves and what they may be experiencing. As many of you will know, both the book and film are also very fun and entertaining. Check out this week's episode to hear more about our thoughts.

    Ep 17 - The Secret Garden (1993)

    Ep 17 - The Secret Garden (1993)

Briana and Maddy are isolated on the Yorkshire Moors when they discover a lost key. Little did they know that it would lead to a Secret Garden. Brought up selfish and overindulged, if you listen closely, you can hear them bickering. But, thanks to a magic chant spoken around a midnight fire to the beat of an ancient dance under the full moon they are able to resolve their differences and grow as people.

This week we discuss Frances Hodgson Burnett's 1911 novel, The Secret Garden. We watched the 1993 film adaptation starring Kate Maberly, Maggie Smith, Heydon Prowse, and Andrew Knott. The 2020 film adaptation will be covered in Part 2.

This is one of our favourite books we have read for the podcast so if you have not read it already, we strongly recommend you do. A spark of magic is always good for you.

    Ep 16 - Eragon (2006)

    Ep 16 - Eragon (2006)

Eragon (Ed Speleers), a poor farm boy, lives in Alagaesia, a kingdom ruled by Galbatorix (John Malkovich), a powerful but evil monarch. One day, Eragon discovers a beautiful stone that he soon realizes is a dragon's egg. When the creature hatches, Eragon sets forth on a path that could restore the glory of his homeland's legendary Dragon Riders and perhaps overthrow Galbatorix - Google.

To this day Eragon is the only film I have ever stopped watching after 20 minutes because it was so bad and frustrating. We covered it for this Fantasy season of the podcast and I will never watch the film again. It was released in 2006 which was the year after Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire was released. I bring that up to emphasise that the industry was in the middle of loving fantasy films so it is confusing why this film was made so poorly, almost intentionally. Christopher Paolini created a beautiful world that we would have liked to explore more which is why we read the entire Inheritance Cycle. This series could have been the next global phenomenon but as a sequel has not be produced in the 14 years since the Eragon film was released, it is apparent that this is not the case.
