The Best Man Holiday (2013): NIA LONG, SANAA LATHAN, REGINA HALL, & MELISSA DE SOUSA

In this episode, Angie and Steffi discuss the holiday sequel to 1999’s “The Best Man”. It’s time to get into “The Best Man Holiday” (2013) starring our divas of the week: Nia Long, Sanaa Lathan, Regina Hall, and Melissa De Sousa.

For this episode, we combined what would normally be two parts of an episode into one episode because that’s what we used to do when covering movies. However, this will probably change in future episodes. But the first part of this episode is reviewing the movie via various scene discussions, while the second part of this episode is us talking about “The Best Holiday” era in Nia Long, Sanaa Lathan, Regina Hall, and Melissa De Sousa’s careers respectively.

During our review, we debate whether these people are actually friends, the ways in which the characters grew and DID NOT grow from the first movie to the sequel, the memorable “Can You Stand the Rain?” scene, and how successful the sequel is.

Then, during our era breakdown, we talk about how the careers of Nia Long, Sanaa Lathan, Regina Hall, and Melissa De Sousa’s; discussing their onscreen personas and all of their amazing work in Black Cinema. We also talk about how the film was marketed and why it was the most profitable Black Holiday film in 2013. Plus, two rounds of IMDB’s “Best Four Known For”!

LOGLINE: The Best Man Holiday is a 2013 American comedy-drama film written, co-produced and directed by Malcolm D. Lee. Along with Lee, the film was produced by Sean Daniel.

    Pleasure Principle

    Pleasure Principle

We're back with a new name and a clarified mission....Sex and Sensuality for Church Girls is committed to deconstructing beliefs around sex and our sensuality every single episode.

This week's episode in honor of Sexual Health Month we're talking about pleasure! Why is pleasure important to the church girl? How can it help us flourish? How do we interrogate our beliefs around it so we can in turn give ourselves to experience pleasure in every area of our lives.

Then we get into the newly released film, "Honk for Jesus Save Your Soul" starring Sterling K. Brown and Regina Hall. Regina as Trinitie Childs was a very real and disheartening depiction of what so many women particularly in the church often go through to be married. We're told in so many ways that if we experience pleasure it is to be experienced by giving it to a man and expecting very little and return. What do we do, though? We get into that on today's episode.

To close out we end with a centering moment with some affirmation around desire and pleasure to offer you some emotional self-care as you may have been activated by some of the topics discussed today.

Episode 326: Busy World of Richard "Scary Movie 2"

Episode 326: Busy World of Richard "Scary Movie 2"

We cannot express how much we love Scary Movie 2. It's a worthy successor. It may not be the pinnacle of the Scary Movie franchise (which is undoubtedly the first movie) but it's stupid and funny and parodies a good bunch of films. We want the Wayans brothers to make another movie in this genre because they are just so good at it. And Regina Hall had better be a part of it. We pair the movie with a Paso Robles Cabernet Sauvignon from Secret Cellars. The label really tries to sell you on the wine and it mostly delivers. Plum, light oak, vanilla. It's all there. Would def buy again.

    Metacritic Score: 29/100

Movie Sync Notes: We watched a purchased version of "Scary Movie 2" on Youtube. We start "Scary Movie 2" 9:14 into the pod and push play on part two 53:04 into the pod.

    Master — Episode 85

    Master — Episode 85

When writer and director Miriama Diallo attended Yale University, she referred to the person in charge of her residential college as ‘master’ — an incredibly outdated term that the school tried to explain away as nothing more than a way to pay homage to a British system on which it was based while stating it had nothing to do with the ugly history of slavery in America.

Diallo just went along with the university’s rules but a few years after she graduated, she happened to run into the former head of her college and instinctively she called him ‘master.’

That’s when she realized the way she had been conditioned to just accept use of such a problematic title. It forced Diallo to really examine her history and how those experiences can truly shape a person but it also inspired her to write a screenplay loosely based upon some of her own experiences at college.

The finished product centered around three women of color at an upscale university called Ancaster where all of them face the specter of institutional racism, not to mention microaggressions and a haunted history at this school with a legacy of intolerance…

In the latest episode of Rewind of the Living Dead, we’re going to wait for the clock to strike 3:33 as we review the 2022 film “Master”…

    G.I. Jane 2

    G.I. Jane 2

Welcome to Episode 101 (Season 3, Episode 10)!   This week is full of nuggets, so be sure you've got a fresh one.  It's getting colorful this week!

Kicking off this week's episode is an brand new taste test on air-- and this one is an all around winner from an epic company whose logo includes a straw hat with freckles.  The taste test is a lesser know product from this crowd-pleasing baker.  In this week's Trash Pick-Up, Mark is reconnecting with some old friends whom he hasn't seen since pre-pandemic over some food and Casey is celebrating a date night with Miss Jeffrey.

In this week's Mid-Section, The Boys are discussing all the happenings and tea from the 2022 Oscars.  It was a night of many firsts.  There were some predictable winners, a couple of surprises, a snub or two, and of course... the slap seen round the world.  Its turned into a hot button conversation laden with no shortage of opinions, but Mark & Casey are weighing in with their own unique perspectives, thoughts, and feelings.  Never short on an opinion, these two are putting it all the way out there.  Additionally The Boys are highlighting the highs of the night and selecting their favorite moment.  This ones full of thoughts, opinions, and reactions.

Then it's on to Trash Talk!  After the extended Mid-Section, Mark & Casey are doing a shorter 2 quick topic segment this week.  Mark is bringing in the hypocrisy of the publicity stunt pulled by Ron DeSantis when signing into law 'Don't Say Gay" Bill, and moments later violating the executed bill which should be carrying hefty fines to him.  Afterward, Casey has the story of a guest on a cruise ship who gets cruised and has some ideas on how he an capitalize on the experience in true trash fashion.

Lastly, in this week's Recommendations (or is it wreck-o-mendations), in a Painted Trash first, Mark is recommending an app ad Casey has invested in a 14hr. book on tape he's living for.

This week is a topical, pointed, thoughtful, and often hilarious episode full of the discourse you know only Mark & Casey can provide.  This one is sure to get you thinking, feeling, and of course laughing! So fill up your port vintage, grab your paint supplies and get ready -- it's an all new Painted Trash episode with your GBFs!!
