    CORE Knowledge

CORE knowledge is a podcast devoted to exploring the many facets and immense potential of an old, but newly revivied energy source; Geothermal. The aim is to engage the energy, policy making and the investment communities in order to spur innovation in the geothermal space and also bring awareness to the immense potential it has to be a baseload energy source for the future.

ImPPPact Global Alliance | Jesse Nyokabi on CORE Knowledge Podcast

Energy access is key to creating a sustainable future, eliminating poverty and improving health. Kenya is at 80% of Kenyans having access to energy, mostly due to their incredible renewable energy production. Geothermal is playing a major role in making Africa a hotspot for learnings, innovation, economic development, sustainable development, better quality of life and so much more. Can Geothermal help Africa become a major economic hub for energy, green hydrogen and beyond? Come listen in to my conversation with Jesse Nyokabi, a Green Energy Pacesetter and ImPPPact Global Alliance Ambassador for Kenya as we talk about the Sustainable Development Goals and how Kenya is leading the way for Africa with regards to Geothermal.

Unity across the globe will be absolutely key in achieving our sustainable future. This is one of the main focuses of IRENA, to be a platform for international cooperation. They don't stop there. Advising on policy, creating tools for understanding global renewable energy, developing reports on the energy transition and tracking every renewable energy and technology are all within their repertoire. I had the pleasure to sit down with Jack Kiruja who is a Renewable Energy Analyst within IRENA focused on Geothermal and get some perspective on all that IRENA is doing to unite the globe to help us transition into our sustainable future. Spoiler: Geothermal is heating up.

Resource extraction is one of the most complex ecosystems in the whole world. Even in an area with rich Geothermal potential it is not always a walk in the park to bring it to life and have electrons on the grid. Political, economic, cultural, financial, technical hurdles all can create roadblocks. There are many nuances in any energy system, but it can be done. I sit down with Max Wilmarth, Geoscience Manager with Jacobs to talk about some of the amazing projects Indonesia has developed, some of the nuances and just some of his experience on the ground with the people.

A bank helping with research, de-risking development, offering a technology incubator to promote innovation and providing funding? No way, not real. Well, actually the Inter-American Development Bank or IDB for short is active in the Central American and Caribbean regions. With their Vision 2025, they aim to target specific SDG's with the use of Geothermal, promote sustainable food production, provide funding to local SME's and create a space for innovation to lead to massive scale deployment of Geothermal in the region. Christiaan Gischler, Lead Energy Specialist at the IDB gives us a phenomenal overview of the amazing work happening at the IDB.

Insurance is there to take risks that equity or debt can't or won't take. Often an overlooked form of financing, Insurance is somewhat of a backbone in a lot of arenas of life and can play the same role in Geothermal. It helps de-risk Geothermal development drilling, decreases the cost of capital, limits downsides for equity or debt investors and ultimately increases access to more capital. As Julian Richardson with Parhelion Underwriting put it, we are here to take on the low probability/high impact risks so that geothermal development can advance globally.

Subsurface risks are pretty well known in Oil and Gas, even in sub salt regions or other exploration arenas where there are significant unknowns we invest and execute projects. So why is it that in Geothermal we don't apply a similar mindset? Why is Geothermal underfunded? Oil and Gas has brought access to energy, economic development and more to countries once thought of as non-existent in the global landscape. Today's chat with Pawl Victor of NOV dives into some of the similarities and differences between O&G and Geothermal and some of the main hurdles it faces.

JRG Energy | John Gilliland on CORE Knowledge Podcast

Ready to get technical??  Well, you're in luck then because this week I sit down with John Gilliland, Director of Operations for JRG Energy and dive deep into the operations for geothermal power production. We discuss the similarities between Oil and Gas operations and Geothermal, as well as how they differ and some of the main challenges with extracting/maintaining production. While some of the main applications for Oil and Gas can be used for Geothermal operations, there are limitations along with challenges such as high pressures and temperatures that don't allow for traditional logging, drilling etc. JRG is in the business of bringing oil and gas expertise into geothermal to help sustain geothermal production in cost effective and innovative ways.

Eavor doesn't see their solution to Geothermal as just a well design, but as a product that can be made to order based on the energy demand of their customer. A big reason why Geothermal hasn't grown at the pace that other renewables have is due to a myriad of reasons, but one in particular, Geographical location has hindered the worldwide deployment of Geothermal. Eavor aims to use their Eavor loop technology to help scale Geothermal and reduce costs down to 0.05 cents/kwh to be competitive with other renewable energy sources.

One of the most unique and innovative companies in my opinion in the Geothermal space is Baseload Capital, initially started as a venture to help finance Geothermal projects, but ended up financing and developing projects around the world. Their process involves working collaboratively with subsidiaries to deploy geothermal power plants worldwide. Baseload then takes care of market research to strategically pick markets, and provides technology knowledge to aid in development. I sit down with Alexander Helling, CEO of Baseload Capital to talk about their projects and how their model is one I believe should be replicated and used to help scale Geothermal.

In the heart of the Alberta Oil patch is a geothermal project aimed at exploiting the hot fluids at around 12,000 ft and bringing them to the surface to provide clean, dispatchable, flexible baseload power to the grid. Why in the middle of the Oil patch? There are some benefits such as the vast amount of temperature data readily available due to the sheer volume of wells, but there is also competition in the form of cheap natural gas and electricity. This is a conversation you will not want to miss as I sit down with Catherine Hickson, CEO of the Alberta No. 1 project to talk about the frontier work, legislation, financing, economics, challenges and so much more.

Egg Geo | Jay Egg on CORE Knowledge Podcast

Solving the problem of commercial, residential and industrial heating and cooling emissions globally will undoubtedly be a huge key to our net zero and low carbon future. One of the most efficient options that is a clean energy source is in fact geothermal ground source heat pumps. They simply rely on the ambient temperature of the Earth at shallow depths and a heat exchanger to heat and cool infrastructure from residential homes to large industrial operations. What a fascinating interview this week with Jay Egg of Egg Geo, who solved a simple problem at his home back in the 80's using ground coupled geothermal which led to the founding of what is today a worldwide leader in designing and engineering for geothermal ground source heat pumps.

Geothermal is not a new resource, it has been around for many decades and has been successfully harnessed in many places around the world. We also talk about the importance of a diverse workplace and how the Geothermal community is working to be a leader in this space today and for the future.
