There is a spiraling crisis of African-American male teachers and students in this country. African-American boys and young men are suspended and expelled at much higher rates than their peers of other races, and up to 50% of children expelled from preschool are African-American boys, even though they’re only 20% of the students. My special guest, Lamarr Darnell Shields, PhD, the Founder and Senior Director of Education and Innovation at the Cambio Group, and former professor at the Johns Hopkins School of Education discusses this shocking trend, causes, and solutions that help African-American boys and young men express their brilliance, including the necessity of recruiting and retaining African-American male teachers. Each and every one of us want to matter! We want to be seen for who we truly are, and we want to be heard. When we feel invisible, it’s painful! We tell our stories in an effort to be understood, to be valued, to know that we matter. We tell the story of our loved ones and the society for the same reasons and to leave a legacy of our values, standards, accomplishments, hope, and resiliency for the inevitable hard times and losses. Storytelling enables us to see ourselves in each other. Through this bridge of connection and understanding, we can overcome differences, transcend indifference, and see our shared humanity. My special guest, John W. Fountain, an award-winning columnist, journalist, professor of journalism, a 2021-22 Fulbright Scholar, and publisher of five books, the latest, “One in a Million: Diary of a Freed Black Journalist” discusses: • The Black church’s influence on his development as a storyteller • The significant impact of our stories upon those who hear them and its generational legacy • His motivation to write stemmed in part from the false perceptions and narratives about African-American men • The importance of speaking your authentic truth and maintaining your perspective • Storytelling is one of the most effective ways to make visible the humanity of the marginalized or “those who linger in the shadows” • The need to tell our stories when mainstream media remains silent • Writing tips for beginners including accepting your writing imperfections “Write your story. S2 E6 The Protective Illusion of the Black Superwoman Complex Part 2, January 10, 2024

S2 E6 The Protective Illusion of the Black Superwoman Complex Part 2, January 10, 2024
Many women strive for excellence every day for themselves and their families. The strong black woman, also called the black superwoman complex, is a strong, resilient, African-American woman, who strives for excellence in all areas of her life to prove she isn’t inferior or inadequate and that she's deserving of the same equal opportunities and access to meaningful resources and success as her white male counterparts. The sacrifice for her super achievements is the denial of her own pain and needs. Bridgette Arnett, MD, PhD. and Mawusi Arnett, MD, MPH discuss: • The economics and racial inequities that perpetuate the false narrative of the African-American woman’s inferiority in order to keep resources for a dominant patriarchy’s profit, power, and pleasure • How this system conditions all women to meet the needs of others while ignoring their own • How the recent resignation of former Harvard President, Claudine Gay, the only African-American female in Harvard’s history, illustrates her excellence wasn’t enough to prove her worthiness nor shield her from false accusations of plagiarism, and how she was discredited by a wealthy donor whose wife had actually committed plagiarism • How does any of this apply to and have meaning for the average, hardworking woman • How a tribal mentality and the fight for resources is designed to keep most Americans impoverished because the color that matters most is the color green • If you don’t like you, you don’t value you and won’t take care of you. You have to like you to exercise self-compassion and take care of yourself. • How your wellness super powers help you achieve and sustain health and wellness, including weight loss. • How do we stop allowing others to define and confine us so we can live happy, healthy lives expressing our greatest potential! #DDLSS #DrDurrsLivingInTheSweetSpot #MawusiArnett #BridgetArnettMDPhD #BlackSuperwomanComplex #StrongBlackWoman #mentalhealth #healthandwellness #excellence #RacialEquity #AfricanAmericanWomen #Equality #EqualOpportunity #ResourceAllocation #Harvard #ClaudineGay #Plagiarism #EconomicInequity #TribalMentality #Empowerment #SelfExpression #EqualityForAll #selfcompassion #selfcare #WellnessSuperPowers #blackdoctors #BlackGirlMagic #resilience #StraightTalk #realtalk

The strong black woman, also called the black superwoman complex, is a strong, resilient, African-American woman, who strives for excellence in all areas of her life, driven in part by an effort to be seen as equal in a society that sees little value in her and believes she's undeserving of access to meaningful resources and success. The sacrifice for her super achievements is the denial of her own pain and needs. S2 E4 How Veteran Employment is Set-Up to Fail | William Toti | Balin A. Durr, MD, December 27, 2023
Veterans are at increased risk of committing suicide within the first year of leaving active duty and suffering job loss within 2 years after becoming a civilian. This is in direct contrast to the expectations of both veterans and employers, who expect great workplace success but are often mistaken and disappointed. Why are veterans more likely to fail in the civilian workplace the more successful they are in the military? What active duty supports and resources are lacking in civilian life? How do we—the loved ones, community, and businesses—help facilitate their successful transition to employment? U.S. Navy Captain (retired) William Toti, author of “From CO to CEO: A Practical Guide for Transitioning from Military to Industry Leadership,” discusses these questions and offers solutions to facilitate veterans’ successful transition to civilian employment. Learn about: • What does PTSD look like? • Why are veterans at increased risk of suicide? • Why some veterans fail to succeed in their civilian careers? • How to assist veterans in understanding their new, corporate missions. • How companies can help ameliorate skill gaps for their new veteran employees and facilitate their successful civilian employment • Changes veterans can make to ensure their successful transition to the civilian workforce • Veteran and military mental health resources, including the National Suicide & Crisis Lifeline, where you can call, text, or chat 988. Dr. Durr's Living In The Sweet Spot with Dr. Balin A. Durr, M.D. S1 E14, Guest, Portia Carney, 1 + 1 = Accountability Guest, Portia Carney, MBA, manager for a major financial institution, and former military appears on the reoccuring segment, Unapologetically Real, to discuss the importance of taking accountability in our relationships. When relationships go sideways, there's a tendency to focus on the other person's role, while ignoring our role in what occurred, including choosing to be in a relationship with the person and exposing ourselves to their behavior. If we want better relationships in the future, we must acknnowledge that there are 2 people in the relationship making choices; 1+1 = 2, 1 doesn't equal 2. Taking accountability enables us to examine our role and choices and to make better choices that create better relationships in the future. The real meanings of our experiences and how they shows up in our relationships and our lives is discussed also.
