Friends & Kin, what a WHIRLWIND life has been for the past two months.  I gained an ancestor & almost lost my mind.  I am still in the throws of grief and trying to adjust to this new way of living a somewhat normal life, yet I feel lost in the sauce.  And I mean completely LOST IN LE SAUCE! Keep me in your prayers, please.

This episode of Hand Me My Purse is, at its core, about LOVE. The love we have for ourselves.  It's about relationships and the true work that must be done to prepare us for entering a space where we are truly ready to be open to a healthy partnership/relationship with someone else - romantically.  I talk about the benefit of choosing to be single, as we get ready - IF WE EVEN WANT TO BE READY.  SINGLE? COUPLED? The choice is OURS TO MAKE.

First of all – HAPPY NEW YEAR! It’s been a minute, friends & kin, but I’M BACK BABY!!!  Sis was on some ol’ other ish. I was DEEP in the trenches of life, trying to navigate celebrating some really MAJOR things that should be celebrated and deal with heavy grief + just regular ol' LIFE = being ABSOLUTELY OVERWHELMED.  However, I'm back and working hard to climb out of the muck into the sunshine!

In this episode I am looking at a different way to approach new year’s resolutions and goals and a real serious look at compassion fatigue vs. burnout – they are NOT THE SAME! I share how to identify compassion fatigue as well as some strategies for dealing & healing with the condition. And yes it is a condition. I also discuss why I have decided to focus on RADICAL JOY in 2023. When you are on the brink of being extremely overwhelmed – you gotta go hard in the paint. No light work, just LIGHT WORK… You see what I did there?

Friends and Kin in this episode, we are going to discuss BEING STILL – what does that even mean?  I am absolutely going to clarify all of that.  We will get into this and also some strategies for doing just that. BEING STILL. 

This is a very simple conversation about what I’ve been up to since we last were together, earlier this summer. School is now back in session and I am slowly RE-adjusting to that life.  During the Summer of '22, my life has seen so many transitions and I am not even mad about it.  The world seems to be on fire, at every turn - yet there is still joy to be had. Joy to be experienced. Gratitude to be felt from our crowns to our soles. I also talk about some of the ways I have dealt with a MILD depression – it wasn’t spicy, but MILD. The biggest strategy was to BE STILL. Also, I share a few tips for making it through those tough times…

Friends and Kin in this episode, we are going to discuss LETTING GO – signs that it’s time to let go and a few things to consider before letting go.  However before I get into that discussion I just wanted to mark two moments in history:

ONE: The supreme court overturned Roe vs. Wade… WHAT THE ENTIRE FUCK. Regardless of whether you are pro-life or pro-choice, let’s get one thing straight.  In this country there are so many oxymorons. Emphasis on the MORON part. This means that freedom to have an Abortion is no longer a federal constitutional right. This is disgusting MAINLY because the government should NOT have a say so in what anyone chooses to do with their bodies.
 
 TWO:  Let’s mark that Mr. Robert Kelly – also known as R. Kelly has been sentenced to 30 years in prison. A court in New York sentenced him to FEDERAL racketeering & sex trafficking. Well, well, well… I read an article on CNN about the sentencing which took place on Wednesday, June 29th that was quite interesting.  Now don’t get me wrong, I know that there are a lot of folks that still support the R. – I am not one of them. Just so we are clear. Make sure to read the article I linked right HERE. It is an interesting read.

Back to LETTING GO, one of the monumental things I learned (yes I learn things doing this podcast!) with this episode is this:  Love is all about FREEDOM. The end of love is NOT the end of LIFE – it should be the beginning of an understanding that love sometimes leaves for a reason, but never leaves without a lesson. (I LOVE THAT!)

Happy Almost Juneteenth!!!  I am so excited about Juneteenth and the Hand Me My Purse Gratitude Challenge starting TODAY! Today being June 15th. 

In this episode, friends & kin we are going to hit on a few things. 

ONE:  JUNETEENTH IS UPON US. And that’s exciting. Or is it?  Are black people still excited about JUNETEENTH now that it’s a FEDERAL holiday? I know personally, I am very annoyed at the bastardization of the holiday our ancestors created to celebrate their emancipation from being enslaved.

TWO:  I want to take a brief look at the magic that is BLACK JOY. The shit is pure magic. There is a title of a poem that reads, “joy is an act of resistance”. I would add onto that, BLACK JOY IS AN INTENTIONAL RADICAL ACT OF RESISTANCE. For all of the sadness, anger, rage, disappointment, violence, and downright evil we encounter and live through daily... We still find ways to feel and share our joy.  And that my friends is FUCKING PHENOMENAL to me. It says so much about our bones. 

THREE:  It’s time for the HAND ME MY PURSE GRATITUDE CHALLENGE. That is a major win for anyone who participates. It's next level intentional living. This episode is a special one. Joining me for this episode is Dr. Gina Paige (from episode No. 29), Co-Founder + President of AfricanAncestry.com and my FAMILY!

Over the summer during my family reunion in Las Vegas, I participated in a Facebook Live (linked here) event with African Ancestry and Dr. Paige, wherein my family took a DNA test during our conversation.  We ended up doing one test for each of my great grandparents:  my great grandmother’s MATERNAL line & my great grandfather’s PATERNAL line. It was amazing and I was so honored to be able to share with the African Ancestry family that experience during our family reunion.

Dr. Paige, not too long ago, came to do an IN-PERSON African Ancestry DNA reveal for my family. It was AMAZING. Such a wonderful time for finding out who, what, how and where we were BEFORE the Trans-Atlantic Slave Trade. Before our ancestors were captured and brought AGAINST THEIR WILL to America – that is what we found out on that very day. I am so excited and proud.  I feel like my ancestors are all smiling down on me DAILY and that they are so pleased with me for making sure my family got to experience such a monumental moment. TOGETHER.

As ALWAYS, I am so grateful and so humbled by your support and encouragement. You are a blessing to me. Hand Me My Purse is exactly what it is and will grow to become something FAR BEYOND MY WILDEST DREAMS - ALL because of your simple, consistent and intentional acts of kindness. On the 2nd birthaversary (YES BIRTHAVERSARY) of Hand Me My Purse the podcast, I felt it was only fitting to have my very first guest back on the show with me. My little cousin Lyndsay & I are both two years wiser, two years older and so is my show! We talked about everything from the slap seen around the world, to when it will be a good time to protect Black Women, Cory Booker & Ketanji Brown-Jackson, dating, SEX, parenting and so much more. It was a Gen X + a Gen Z party, wherein I learned we actually see things through a similar lens. I am hoping this means the kids will be alright.

Happy Black History Month - AGAIN!!! It's the shortest month of the year & also the year that America and some countries around the world choose to celebrate the history of Black people on this planet - particularly in the United States. It's also Valentine's Day time. It has come and gone, but it's hot on our lips and in our brains, podcasts live FOREVAAAAA!

Then for some of us it was exciting to start.  However, the sweet spot was the reflection. It was the aftershock of being able to focus on being grateful for what we HAVE, for MORE than a moment. Across the board it was life changing, and that makes me so happy.  I am forever grateful to these ladies for their participation in my little ol’ challenge, and for their courage to share so much of themselves in this episode.  We are blessed beyond measure and CLEARLY we are grateful for it all.
