Boozy Beginnings: The Righteous Gemstones Pilot

Boozy Beginnings: The Righteous Gemstones Pilot

Happy Wine Wednesday! The Righteous Gemstones are FINALLY returning for a new season, so I thought this was a perfect time to revisit the pilot episode of this amazing HBO series.

We kick off our discussion with the cold open in which we get a preview into the Gemstone family dynamics during a 24-hour baptism marathon in China. We then discuss our introductions to Eli, Jesse, Judy, and Kelvin as we follow them to their respective homes.  I had a lot of questions about Jesse's evening routine.

We love all of the shows in the Danny McBride-verse, so of course we talk about his imprint on on this show - particularly the dialogue between characters.  As always, we close out the discussion with our less than wholesome thirsty thoughts.  We discuss the need for a scientific exploration of the stereotypes about preacher's kids and which famous preacher's kid we would choose to carry out this very important research.

Friendly reminder - we drink, we know things, we use adult language, and we have a great time.

    Grand Crew: Season 2 Recap

    Grand Crew: Season 2 Recap

Happy Wine Wednesday! Candi is back and this week we are discussing the spectacular second season of NBC's Grand Crew.  Y'all know from our season 1 discussion that we love this show and the second season only deepened our appreciation for it.

Grand Crew continues to be a perfect comfort show.  The writers did an amazing job at highlighting the chemistry among this spectacularly talented cast.

We talk about our favorite character arcs, standout episodes and shared what we thought worked well during the season.  And of course we discussed the shocking departure of Grasie Mercedes.  We want Fay back!

We are determined to manifest a well deserved renewal for Grand Crew, so we talked about our wish list for season 3. And as always, the discussion wraps on a thirsty note.

    Boozy Beginnings: The Barry Pilot

    Boozy Beginnings: The Barry Pilot

Happy Wine Wednesday! We're back with another installment in our Boozy Beginnings series.  Candi joined me this week to talk about the pilot episode of the HBO series Barry.

We kick off our discussion by talking about the opening scene in which we meet Barry who looks like he is struggling to feel satisfied in his career as an assassin.  We also talk about how the writers very efficiently acquainted us with him via some well done exposition from Fuches.

Barry is the show's namesake and undoubtedly the main character, but the interesting cast of characters is absolutely part of the charm of this series.  In light of that, I ask Candi a few questions for sh*ts and giggles - including her thoughts about NoHo Hank.  We love him!

After a few Barry-inspired questions, we share what worked well in the pilot and whether there was anything that didn't work for us.  If you're new to Barry, we try to further entice you to watch by sharing three words to describe the series.  Have no fear, our discussion is spoiler free - nothing beyond the pilot episode.

As always, we end with our thirsty thoughts.  It's a Barry episode, so of course we swoon over Bill Hader.

Friendly reminder - we drink, we know things, we use adult language, and we have a great time.

Abbott Elementary Season 2: Final Report Card

Happy Wine Wednesday! Candi joins me again this week to close out our thoughts on the amazing second season of Abbott Elementary.  We already covered the first ten episodes of the season and you can hear that fun discussion here.

We talk about the season as a whole, our favorite character arcs, guest actor standouts, our favorite episode of the second half, and of course we get into the Gregory and Janine of it all.

    Wakanda Forever

    Wakanda Forever

NOTE: This episode was recorded in February, which was prior to the recent allegations regarding Jonathan Majors.

Happy Wine Wednesday! Candi and Andre join me this week for the home going services of Queen Ramonda and her son King T'Challa in Marvel's Wakanda Forever.

The movie wasted no time addressing the tremendous loss of Chadwick Boseman, so we follow that lead in our discussion and start by talking about the direction Ryan Coogler took in bringing that loss to the screen.  We went into the film thinking there would only be one major loss so it was a surprise when Queen Ramonda was tragically killed.  I ask Candi and Andre to share their thoughts about that narrative decision.  Other topics covered include:

    • Kilmonger's return (ugh)
    • Namor as an antagonist
    • Thoughts on storylines for the returning secondary characters
    • What Wakanda Forever as a meditation on grief and loss meant for it as a Marvel film
    • Ryan's original vision for Wakanda Forever before Chadwick's tragic death
    • Post-credit scene with the wee baby Toussaint
    • What we would've left on the cutting room floor of this long as* film

And of course we close with our thirst segment, which was inspired by the African American urge to avoid vast bodies of water.

Another Round: Wolf Pack Pilot/The Teen Wolf Movie

Another Round: Wolf Pack Pilot/The Teen Wolf Movie

Happy Wine Wednesday my fellow long suffering Teen Wolf fans! This episode is aptly titled "Another Round" because we're having one last therapy session on the hot mess that was the Teen Wolf Movie.  I've enlisted a fantastic panel of guests to join me - Philip, Stacey, and Terence.

They also graciously agreed to do a very brief chat about the Wolf Pack pilot.  It is truly bewildering that Jeff Davis gets to continue his reign of terror on supernatural fans with an all new show featuring Sarah Michelle Gellar.

The episode kicks off with our Wolf Pack discussion and right around 1:09:42 mark, we get into the Teen Wolf movie.  I decided to use the Festivus approach to the discussion and you better believe we had a lot of grievances to air.

If you haven't already, be sure to check out my fun chat with Laura Stone and Devil Doll about the Teen Wolf Movie as well.  The duo worked with me to construct a Teen Wolf Movie compliment sandwich in which we had two very thin layers of compliments with a huge heaping portion of constructive criticism in between.

As always, thanks for listening. And friendly reminder - we drink, we know things, we use adult language, and we have a great time!

The Last of Us Finale: Protect the Giraffes!

The Last of Us Finale: Protect the Giraffes!

Happy Wine Wednesday! Our coverage of HBO's The Last of Us concludes this week with a discussion about the finale and our overall thoughts about the first season.

Of course we get into Joel's rampage and contemplate whether he has some long overdue karma coming his way.  We also question whether it's a wise choice or hustling backwards to do experimental, life-ending surgery on the ONLY person known to have immunity.  It was really interesting to see how Ellie became immune, but that horrifying scene with her mother giving birth while fighting a clicker was absolutely a chicken skin moment.

We share our thoughts on the first season as a whole and our wish list for season two. As always, the discussion ends with the thirst segment.  I asked Candi to do some thirsty guest casting for the next season.

Thanks so much for your support of these episodes! We had a blast discussing it and we are absolutely invested in this series.

The Last of Us: Episodes 7-8

The Last of Us: Episodes 7-8

Hey there lovely listeners! It's not Wine Wednesday, so think of this as a Sunday surprise instead.  Candi and I are entering the home stretch of our coverage of HBO's The Last of Us with our discussion about episodes 7 and 8.

We share our thoughts on getting more insight into Ellie's backstory in episode 7 and the discovery that she has much more in common with Joel than we understood.  We then move on to episode 8 and the evil cult. We're always here for Ellie saving herself, but we did think there was some room for improvement in the writing for David.  It would've been nice to have a little more of a reveal of him as a villain, rather than him looking completely sketchy from the very first moment he appears.  Candi had a few questions about Joel's miraculous ability to rally from his injury.  Penicillin is great, but there is usually a crash after that initial feeling of improved health.

As always, we talk about who was hustling backwards, the moment that felt most like a video game, and we give out a yummy chicken sandwich what we enjoyed most from the episodes.  For the thirst segment, we were inspired by Riley and Ellie's first date so we discuss what our perfect date during the apocalypse would be.

Thanks so much for listening! Friendly reminder - we drink, we know things, we use adult language, and we have a great time.  Keep an eye on the feed for our close out discussion of The Last of Us.  We will share our thoughts on the finale and reflections on the first season as a whole.

    Everything Everywhere All At Once

    Everything Everywhere All At Once

Happy Wine Wednesday! The illustrious, brilliant, funny, and insightful Rod Kim makes his triumphant return to the podcast this week to discuss the multiple Oscar award winning film, Everything Everywhere All At Once.  Longtime listeners will remember Rod from our very fun conversation about Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings.

The only thing that could make my viewing experience better was getting an opportunity to talk about this film with Rod.

We get into some of the central themes - including strength in kindness, the impact of generational trauma, the weight of not living up to expectations, and the symbolism of the everything bagel.

Of course you know we celebrate the spectacular performances in the film.  Is there anything that Michelle Yeoh can't do? I don't think so.  And how amazing was Ke Huy Quan? I have long poked fun at folks not recognizing the difference between Superman and Clark Kent just because of a pair of glasses, but Ke Huy Quan made me a believer in the difference a pair of glasses can make.

We also run through a list of faves from Jobu's spectacularly campy looks to the hilarious assortment of jumping pads.   We wrap our discussion with the thirst segment.  I put a twist on the everything bagel concept and asked Rod to give me a few of his celebrity crushes he would assemble for an everything bagel of love and lust.

Thanks so much for listening! Friendly reminder - we drink, we know things, we use adult language, and we have a great time!

The Last of Us Episode 6 - Tommy Byke!

The Last of Us Episode 6 - Tommy Byke!

Happy Wine Wednesday! Our regular coverage of HBO's The Last of Us continues with our discussion about episode 6, "Kin." Tommy returns with a wife (portrayed by the fantastic Rutina Wesley) and baby on the way and all three managed to make it out of this episode alive - hooray!

Candi and I unpack the dynamic between the newly reunited brothers.  We had a lot of questions about what exactly Tommy told Maria about his early apocalypse days with Joel.  I had some questions about the brothers' newly found accents because the twang was a little thick and not something I'd noticed in the pilot.

We also share our impressions of Maria - it was truly a Black History Month miracle that she managed to make it out of this episode alive and her family intact to boot.

Of course we get into the growth of Joel and Ellie's friendship and share what we would teach Ellie about from the pre-2003 world.

In honor of reunions and loving relationships featured in the episode, the thirst segment discussion centers on the celebrity crush we would endure a long, taxing trip across several states to get to against all odds.

Until next time! Friendly reminder that we drink, we know things, we use adult language, and we have a really great time.

Profanity and As* Shots: The Teen Wolf Movie

Profanity and As* Shots: The Teen Wolf Movie

Happy Wine Wednesday! Two new spectacular guests to the pod - Laura Stone and Devil Doll - join me this week for the home going services of Derek Hale.   Grab your wine and join us as we unpack our feelings about the Teen Wolf movie.  Laura and Devil Doll are both passionate Teen Wolf fans and I had the best time talking about this mess with them.

Before getting into this mess of a movie, I asked Laura and Devil Doll for their reflections on Teen Wolf as a series.  We then get into our deep dive of the movie.  We take the "compliment sandwich" approach to this conversation. We've got a very robust set of grievances with this film sandwiched between very thin layers of compliments.  It should come as no surprise that we kick off our critical thoughts about the film with the many, many crimes committed by Jeff Davis against Derek Hale.  We chat about the messy ways in which this film tries to grapple with the absence of Dylan O'Brien and you better believe we talk about the egregious treatment of Arden Cho.

We also lament that Jeff Davis decided to celebrate the opportunity to infuse more adult content into the film thanks to it being on Paramount Plus by giving us a sprinkling of profanity and ass shots - hence the title of this episode. We also give thanks to Colton Haynes and Ian Bohen for bringing some much needed camp to this film.  Truly wish Jackson had been given more to do!

A lot of my friends had thoughts about this film, so this is the first of two episodes in which we will be discussing it - so stay tuned!

The Last of Us Eps 4-5: Hustling Backwards

The Last of Us Eps 4-5: Hustling Backwards

Happy Wine Wednesday! Candi and I are back this week to discuss episodes 4 and 5 of HBO's The Last of Us.  Given that episode 4 was mostly setup, we thought it was best to package our discussion about this two-episode arc together.

We discuss all things Kathleen, including speculation about her origin story, why her people were so loyal to her, and how her unraveling led to some terrible leadership decisions that literally came back to bite her.  Of course we applaud the amazing performances by Lamar Johnson (Henry) and Keivonn Woodard (Sam).  Give us Keivonn as Miles Morales!

As we've seen in past episodes, the friends they meet along the way will absolutely shape the dynamics between Ellie and Joel. We talk about Ellie getting an opportunity to be in the protector role and what we think is next for her and Joel.

From Kathleen ignoring the infected to Ellie shooting bullets and an oversized truck, there were quite a few recipients of the hustling backwards awards this week - hence the episode title.

Thanks so much for listening! Friendly reminder - we drink, we know things, we use adult language, and we have a good time.

Drinking and Table Flipping: A LONG Ass RHONJ Episode

Drinking and Table Flipping: A LONG Ass RHONJ Episode

Happy Wine Tuesday? Yep. You're getting another week of double episodes! This week I'm celebrating a new podcast guest, a new season of the Real Housewives of New Jersey, and the same ol' Jersey antics.  Fellow attorney,  lover of all things housewives, and Lakers fan Sheena joins me this week to discuss the RHONJ season 13 premiere, "New Friends, Same Jersey."  As you can see from the runtime, we had a LOT to say.  Yikes!

I couldn't have Sheena on and not pick her brain about a few hot topics around the Housewives' universe.  We talk RHOP, RHONY, and Ultimate Girls Trip.  We also talk a bit about the dynamics on RHONJ heading into the season 13 premiere.  We talk about where the franchise ranks for us, take a side on the never-ending feud between Teresa/Melissa/Joe, discuss whether we would like to see more diversity on the show, and we share where we think Teresa stands in the pantheon of housewives.

We FINALLY get to the season 13 premiere and share our overall thoughts on the episode. We get into taglines, the newbies, discuss the disagreements that the longstanding cast members brought into the new season, and of course we get into the calendar featuring the men. We close out the main discussion about the premiere with what we're looking forward to most this season.

I introduce Sheena to her very first thirst segment and I charge her with sharing the 12 Housewives universe players she would include in her charity calendar.  Everyone is fair game from main cast, partners, friends of, or just memorable one-off guest appearances.

Friendly reminder - we drink, we know things, we use adult language, and we have a good time.

Wu-Tang: An American Saga - Protect Ya Neck (S2, Ep. 6)

Wu-Tang: An American Saga - Protect Ya Neck (S2, Ep. 6)

Happy Wine Wednesday and Happy Wu Wednesday! Candi is with me this week to talk to y'all about a show you should absolutely be watching, Wu-Tang: An American Saga.

I was drawn to this show because I love Wu-Tang Clan so very, very much. We get into our history with the group and what their catalog has meant to us.  But let me be VERY clear, you do not have to be a Wu-Tang Clan fan (although, why wouldn't you be?) nor do you have to even know who Wu-Tang is (again, why wouldn't you know?) to enjoy this show because at its core, it is excellent storytelling and equally amazing acting.  Good television is good television!

Normally, I would do a discussion about the pilot episode as a gateway for listeners to a show. But I couldn't resist the spectacular episode 6 of season 2 - "Protect Ya Neck" - for the topic of this discussion.  It perfectly exemplifies why this show is much see television. And Candi, who had not watched any of the series before, agreed that it was a perfectly fine introduction to the show and she did not feel lost - so take the leap! Listen to our discussion and check out the episode. And once you check out the episode, go back and start from the beginning. Depending on your country, it will be available on either Hulu or Disney Plus.

I timed this release to coincide with the Season 3 premiere. Season 3 is the final season of the series, so I wanted to honor it by discussing one of the strongest episodes of the series to hopefully get this great show on your radar. This is a cast of superstars and I'm so happy that this series introduced me to each and every one of them.

It made my heart so full - which you'll hear in my terrible attempts at dropping some of my favorite Wu verses - to do this episode as a love letter to both the rap group I love so very much and the brilliant, talented cast who brought this story to life.

The Last of Us Ep 3: Beaujolais and Chill

The Last of Us Ep 3: Beaujolais and Chill

Happy Valentine's Day, lovely listeners! We love you over here at the pod, so we wanted to give you a gift on this day of love - it's our discussion about episode 3 of The Last of Us, "Long, Long Time." Like everyone else, we LOVED this episode.

We revisit our thoughts on the outbreak origin story after receiving additional context via Joel.  We also chat about all of the times in the pilot where Joel and Sarah narrowly missed getting exposed to the tainted grain supply.

We then get into all things Bill and Frank.  We talk about their storyline in the show and note some major changes from the game - all of which we thought were great. We talk about Bill's final words to Joel and what that means for his dynamic with Ellie going forward.

There were a few moments in which the characters were hustling backwards, so we note those.  As always, the discussion closes with the thirst segment and I ask Candi which celebrity crush she would like to have as the Bill to her Frank during apocalyptic times.

Thanks for listening! Friendly reminder - we drink, we know things, we use adult language, and we have a really good time.  If you have feedback you'd like us to read and discuss on an episode of The Last of Us, send it to morewinepod@gmail.com.

The Last of Us Ep. 2: They swinging!

The Last of Us Ep. 2: They swinging!

Happy Wine Wednesday! We're back with our regular coverage of HBO's The Last of Us.  This week we're talking about episode 2 - "Infected."  We talk about the very interesting cold open and our complicated feelings about where the writers seem to be suggesting that the outbreak began.  Now that we've had more time with Ellie, we get into our impressions of her and thoughts on her introduction as a character.

We pour one out for Tess and share the moment when we realized she actually had hope, which meant she was not long for this world.  We then give out several awards for the episode - the moment that gave us serious chicken skin, the video game moment of the week, the hustling backwards award, and we close it out giving a delicious chicken sandwich award to our favorite part of the episode.

I spend a lot of time freaking out over the clickers and the fact that they actually fight back - they were swinging, y'all! After I finally calm down from my freakout, Candi and I discovered that we have actual magical powers when we come together thanks to an obscure, but memorable reference that we both decided to discuss during the thirst segment not knowing the other was thinking of the exact same moment.  We will do our best to use our powers responsibly.

Thanks for listening! Friendly reminder - we drink, we know things, we use adult language, and we have a really good time.  If you have feedback you'd like us to read and discuss on an episode of The Last of Us, send it to morewinepod@gmail.com.

Boozy Beginnings: Interview with the Vampire Pilot

Boozy Beginnings: Interview with the Vampire Pilot

Happy Wine Wednesday! February is the month of love and it's Black History Month, so we're kicking things off with a show that features one of my favorite, albeit toxic, relationships while also weaving in the history of Black Americans due to an inspired casting choice.  Pod fave Terence Johnson returns this week to discuss the pilot episode of Interview with the Vampire.  This show is so good and Jacob Anderson is an absolute revelation!

We talk about the pilot's opening hook, character introductions, and the choice of New Orleans as the setting.  We share our thoughts on worked well in the episode, including the amazing performance by Jacob.

Terence gives a closing pitch on why you should keep watching beyond the pilot.  As someone who has now watched the entire first season after this recording, I wholeheartedly agree with Terence.  You should definitely stick with this show!

Of course we close the conversation by getting thirsty.  To borrow from Louis, we talk about who would have us seeking ass before absolution and we do some thirst-inspired fan casting for season 2.

Friendly reminder - we drink, we know things, we use adult language, and we have a great time!

Be sure to follow and support Terence here: his website, his Twitter account, and his IG. You can also check out my fun discussion with him about the Looking pilot here.

Boozy Beginnings: The Last of Us Pilot

Boozy Beginnings: The Last of Us Pilot

Happy Wine Wednesday! This week we are kicking off our regular coverage of The Last of Us with a discussion about the amazing pilot episode of the HBO series.  We talk about the pacing of the writing, our introduction to Joel, and our thoughts on the rules of zombie engagement.  We were both deeply concerned about how fast these zombies move.

Programming Note: In the episode, I reference my conversation with Terence Johnson about Interview with a Vampire.  That was previously scheduled to come out before this episode, but my editor made a miracle happen and we got this discussion back quicker than expected.  Stay tuned next week for my very fun discussion with Terence about Interview with a Vampire and the absolutely delightful onscreen presence of Jacob Anderson.

As always - we drink, we know things, we use adult language, and we have a good time!

    Abbott Elementary: Mid-Season Report Card

Happy Wine Wednesday! Candi joined me this week for a mid-season check-in on Abbott Elementary. We discuss the first 10 episodes and share our thoughts on character development, the Janine/Gregory slow burn, and the brilliant decision to make Mr. Johnson a series regular. We also share our favorite episodes in the first half of the season. It should come as a surprise to no one that I had lots to say about the Halloween episode, “Candy Zombies.”
