Welcome to the I'ma Need More Wine Podcast created by Kristine and Jocelyn! The podcast is now hosted by Jocelyn who is an attorney by day who gets together biweekly with her friends/special guest hosts to unpack and applaud the things we like and serve up a big WTF to things we don’t like - all while enjoying a good bottle of wine. Grab your wine and join the pop culture discussion centering mostly on television series, although there is the occasional exploration of documentaries and film. Sleepy Hollow: The Reckoning

    Sleepy Hollow: The Reckoning

Happy Wine Wednesday! It's the holiday season and shows are on hiatus, so it's the perfect time to discover new faves and take the occasional trip down memory lane to revisit past shows.  In the previous episode, Reverend Solomon Missouri and I discussed a new fave - The Bear.  This week, I'm switching gears and revisiting a show that had so much potential and then completely alienated its audience in an astonishing fashion - Sleepy Hollow.

I'm joined this week by Stacey and Tamara to unpack our very complicated relationship with this series.  The discussion is broken out into two parts.  In part 1, we discuss the Sleepy Hollow pilot and revisit the magic of Tom Mison and Nicole Beharie on screen.  As always, the pilot discussion is spoiler free and limited to the events of the pilot only.

In part 2 of the discussion, we talk about the series as a whole and pull no punches.  We get into the terrible treatment of Abbie Mills as a character and Nicole Beharie as an actress.  We discuss the writers biggest crimes against the audience and the many, many times the show completely wasted the potential of its talented cast.  It was a long overdue, cathartic conversation about a show that went from being must see television to me  blocking most of the writers' room on social media after their poor responses to valid criticisms from the fans.

Check the chapter markers to see where part 2 of the discussion begins (roughly around the 1:16:00 mark).

Friendly reminder: we drink, we know things, we use adult language, and we have a good time!

    Bear-ing Witness: Watch The Bear!

    Bear-ing Witness: Watch The Bear!

HAPPY WINE WEDNESDAY! This episode was a dream come true.  I got to talk about one of the best shows of 2022 with the illustrious Reverend Solomon Missouri.  Solomon is a Twitter pastor, play cousin, problem (his words, not mine), and preeminent marriage counselor to wayward athletes.  I became acquainted with him thanks to his epic thread in which he cautioned Dell Curry about the current state of dating - they're pegging out here!

Solomon joined me to discuss a show you should absolutely be watching - The Bear.  Part 1 is all about the pilot episode with no spoilers and part 2 is a spoilery discussion in which we discuss Season 1 as a whole.

Unfortunately, we had some audio issue with part 1.  If you can't take the audio issues, here's the link to the start of part 2 of the discussion which sounds much better.  It's right around the 2 hour mark if your podcast app doesn't support chapter links.  Audio issues aside, I hope you enjoy this discussion.  Solomon was an absolute delight!

I love you for listening.  Friendly reminder that on this podcast we drink, we know things, we use adult language, and we have a good time!

You can find everywhere Solomon is located on social media here. And find his ICONIC thread and words of wisdom for Dell Curry here.

House of the Dragon - Intentionally and Unintentionally Black As F*ck

House of the Dragon - Intentionally and Unintentionally Black As F*ck

Happy Wine Wednesday! Candi returns this week to close out our coverage of House of the Dragon.  As I previewed in my discussion with Maddie in our Season 1 wrap-up, I wanted to create a separate space to discuss the show runner's decision to cast Black actors to portray the Valeryons while also deciding not to introduce race into the writing.  The decision was at times both frustrating and amusing.  It also created moments that felt both intentionally and unintentionally Black as f*ck and that's what Candi and I get into this week.

Some moments are light - like Black ass names and crab boils.  And some moments are a little heavy - like character erasure.  We also talk about how many fans took their cues from the writers, which meant you can find a million and one posts about Aemond while having to go to great lengths to find appreciation for characters like Laena, Baela, and Rhaena - it's not like the show gave any of them a lot of material.

Candi shares her thoughts about the season as a whole and of course we get thirsty.

As always - we drink, we know things, we use adult language, and we have a good time!

1:54:39 - A well deserved mea culpa for Viserys.

    Hot Girl Hulkster: She-Hulk Season 1 Wrap-Up

    Hot Girl Hulkster: She-Hulk Season 1 Wrap-Up

Happy Wine Wednesday, y'all! It's our final episode on She-Hulk - for now - and it's bittersweet. This show has been such a fun time and I will really miss it. However, I can't think of a better way to close out our coverage than being joined by Candi and new guest to the pod - Andre!

As always, we kick off our discussion by touching on the ongoing themes of the season and the exploration of them in the finale and the season as a whole.  First, we talk about the "big bads" of the season and the revelation of Todd as the Hulk King. We also revisit the return of Titania and whether or not we wanted to see Josh again after his devastating betrayal.

Next up - cameos! We talk about the chaotic Royal Rumble-like fight when everyone crashes the party like a series of Kool-Aid men.  And we give our closing thoughts on Emil's role throughout this season - we definitely had mixed feelings about that.

Much to our delight, Jessica Gao was not done with her exploration of toxic masculinity.  We discuss how that's explored in the finale and our thoughts about the writers addressing this issue over the course of Season 1.

We wouldn't leave you without our thoughts on our favorite "at law" moments.  Following that, we talk about the general use of the secondary characters in Jennifer's world - we would've been really happy with more Nikki, Pug, and Mallory - here's hoping that they will have more involvement in the future.

The episode closes with our wishlist for Season 2 and Andre survives his very first thirst segment by sharing his hopes for Jennifer's romantic prospects going forward.

We have a brief spoiler segment after our sign off in which I ask Andre and Candi to weigh in on Bruce arriving in the finale with a son.

Thank you so much for joining us for this coverage - I hope you've had as much fun as we have.  I love you for listening.  Friendly reminder - we drink, we know things, we use adult language, and we have a really good time.

Hot Girl Hulkster: She-Hulk Episodes 7-8

Hot Girl Hulkster: She-Hulk Episodes 7-8

Happy Wine Wednesday! Our coverage of She-Hulk: Attorney at Law continues this week with a discussion about episodes 7 and 8.  As always, we start with recurring themes across the first season and how they are explored in these episode.  This includes our thoughts on Emil's role this season, the use of cameos generally, Easter Eggs, and our favorite "at-law" moments.  We also revisit our thoughts about Luke's fashion design talents in this episode after seeing She-Hulk's official uniform for the first time and her gala dress.  Perhaps Luke isn't a nemesis after all?

We had SO many thoughts about the Daredevil cameo.  We loved every second of it and we are fully invested in Matt/Jenn or Daredevil/She-Hulk - we're here for all of it.  Jessica Gao and her talented staff of writers are not relenting in their exploration of toxic masculinity and we share our appreciation for that.

As always, we get thirsty with some fun prompts inspired by these episodes.  We share with whom from the MCU we would like to have an adversaries to lovers experience like Matt and Jennifer. We enjoyed Matt's walk of shame and share our choices among other MCU characters we wouldn't mind see doing a shoe-less walk of shame from Jennifer's apartment.  Our thirsty thoughts conclude with giving Jennifer some well deserved agency and choosing the MCU character with whom we would like to see her consensually create a sex tape. Josh is the worst!

    Thor: Love and Thunder

    Thor: Love and Thunder

Happy Wine Wednesday! We are back with a new episode and a new guest this week. Abbey rejoins me and brings along another amazing person I've met through them - Lauren.  Lauren is part-time freelance writer and full-time Marvel nerd based out of New York.  We all LOVE Thor, so I was delighted  to expand the podcast universe of Thor lovers.

Tipsy warning - I had a margarita cocktail in a bottle  this week and it shows!

5:06 - We discuss Love and Thunder's opening and how tonally different it is from Ragnarok.

8:40 - Thoughts on what message - if any - Taika is sending about religion. Particularly in light of the film's opening.

16:03 - Reflections on how Taika's imprint on the Thor-verse. We share favorite comedic moments, the visual aesthetic that is unique to Thor thanks to Taika, was there too much Guns N' Roses, and action sequences

56:31 - Abbey and Lauren share their thoughts on the exploration of grief in Love and Thunder. Did this film make up for the sins of Endgame?

1:25:25 - The Jane of it all. I also go on a bit of a rant about Gorr and my dislike for his origin story.

2:18:07 - Thoughts on whiny dude bros and whether the film is inclusive enough.

    2:29:25 - Thirst Segment - MCU Orgy!

Hot Girl Hulkster: She-Hulk Episodes 5-6

Hot Girl Hulkster: She-Hulk Episodes 5-6

Happy Wine Wednesday! Our coverage of She-Hulk: Attorney at Law continues this week with a discussion about episodes 5 and 6.  We kick off our discussion with our thoughts on favorite Easter Eggs, best "at law" moments, the lack of cameos in these two episodes, and the use of the secondary characters thus far.  The lack of cameos meant more time for Titania, so we chat about whether we like the social media influencer as a nemesis for Jennifer/She-Hulk.

Perhaps Luke Jacobson is the true nemesis of the season because we were not feeling the so-called upgrade of Jennifer's wardrobe.  We were also overdue to discuss the show's fun closing credits, so we get into that as well.

We then get into episode specific thoughts.  I had a few thoughts about Pug's code switching in episode 5 and episode 6 really left us wanting more wins and less humiliation for Jennifer.

The main discussion wraps  with our wishlist for the last 3 episodes of the season.  And we close out with a thirst segment inspired by episodes 5 and 6, including our best effort at coming up with a dating app tagline that rivals, "mean, green, and poured into these jeans."

Gallaghers and Gallavich: A Shameless Discussion

Gallaghers and Gallavich: A Shameless Discussion

Happy Wine Wednesday! Podcast superstar and entertainment journalist Andy B. joins me this week to discuss one of my favorite shows of all time - Showtime's Shameless.  We love this messy Southside Chicago family and Gallavich is unquestionably one of our absolute favorite ships.

    00:00:00 - Intro & Jocelyn/Andy Origin Story
00:21:22 - How We Got Into Shameless
00:29:47 - Have we watched the UK version of Shameless?
00:33:29 - We dig into the Shameless pilot.
01:44:59 - A few questions for sh*ts and giggles - some "shameless" character astrology, would you go on a second date with Fiona, ridiculous CGI, and why didn't Lip pick up that darn apple?
02:34:22 - You've been hired to create a Shameless reboot - what does it look like?
02:45:38 - Why you should keep watching Shameless.
02:52:28 - A Shameless inspired thirst segment in which we are shamelessly thirsty!
    03:14:38 - Spoiler segment.

Content warning: we discuss the writers’ approach to handling sexual assault over the course of the series.

Hot Girl Hulkster: She-Hulk Episodes 3-4

Hot Girl Hulkster: She-Hulk Episodes 3-4

Happy Wine Wednesday! Our coverage of She-Hulk: Attorney at Law continues this week with a discussion about episodes 3 and 4.  Candi and I continue to really love this show.  We kick off our chat by talking about themes and stylistic choices that the writers continue to develop in the series.  We talk about Jennifer continuing to break the fourth wall, addressing misogyny in Jennifer's life and the fandom, and using cameos of fan faves.  We were absolutely delighted about Wong's involvement in these episodes.  The show is called She-Hulk: Attorney at Law, so we talk about our favorite "at law" moments as well.

Candi didn't love the randomness of Titania in the show's pilot, so I thought episodes 3 and 4 provided a perfect opportunity for us to check-in on how the writers have been handling Jennifer's foes thus far.  We wrap up the main discussion by talking about our wish list for the next few episodes and then we get thirsty.  We talk about who we would like to meetup with on the Hollywood Hookup app, which MCU character we'd like to thirst trap like Nikki did Wong, and we revisit some Hulk smashing thoughts as well.

We have a very quick spoiler segment at the end so that Candi can share a few comic book tidbits.  Don't worry - you'll have plenty of advance warning.

    Community: The Pilot Episode

    Community: The Pilot Episode

Happy Wine Wednesday! Matt of The Communies fan account joins me this week to talk about one of my absolute favorite shows and fandoms of all time - Community! Our conversation is part of the podcast's Boozy Beginnings AKA pilot project series in which we discuss the pilot episode of various tv shows.

Matt and I head over to Greendale and kick off our discussion with what drew us to Community, whether we we completed the series, and then the deep dive into the pilot. We start by talking about the pilot's introduction to two of the more memorable characters from the series - Craig Pelton and Greendale Community College.  From there, we talk about our initial impressions of Jeff Winger and other memorable introductions to the study group members.  We were both struck at how fully realized these characters clearly were from the very start. Y'all know I love a little lighthearted zodiac fun, so I asked Matt to identify his big three signs in the form of Community characters.

Although we were both huge fans of the episode, there were a few minor things we might do differently.  Related to that topic, I asked Matt to share what his version of Community would look like if he were in charge of a revival or reboot of the show.  No discussion of Community would be complete without talking "Six Seasons and a Movie" - so of course I asked what his Community movie would look like.

The main discussion closes with our thoughts on why you should keep watching, our favorite fandom moments, and we get a little less than wholesome with some fun Community-inspired thirst prompts.

Matt graciously stuck around and discussed overall thoughts about the series in a spoiler segment following the main discussion.

Hot Girl Hulkster - She-Hulk: Attorney At Law Episodes 1-2

Happy Wine Wednesday! Candi is back this week to kick off our  coverage of She-Hulk: Attorney at Law.

In this episode, we discuss episode 1 and 2 of the series.  First Candi and I share our level of engagement with the source material.  Candi enlisted some help from some fellow Blerds and I am coming into the series with no prior knowledge of Jennifer Walters.

The first part of our discussion focuses on the pilot - our thoughts on the opening scene, Jennifer's origin story, the casting of Tatiana Maslany in the role, and what worked for us in the introductory episode.  We then discuss episode 2 - Superhuman Law - and Jennifer's ongoing tension between returning to her normal life and the call to duty that often comes with superhuman abilities.

We close things out by discussing our wishlist for the rest of the season, whether or not we were distracted by the show's CGI, and then we have a riveting discussion about whether the Hulk can smash in our thirst segment.  As mentioned during the thirst segment, check out this article about the Hulk's sexcapades.  And support the talented Stephanie Williams  - here's her Twitter where you can follow her work.

We Dug Coal Together AKA The Justified Pilot

We Dug Coal Together AKA The Justified Pilot

Happy Wine Wednesday! This week a new guest to the podcast, Jay Giles, joins me on a trip to Eastern Kentucky for the pilot episode of the FX series, Justified.

We kick off the discussion by sharing what drew us to Justified and whether we read  the source material written by Elmore Leonard.  We then get into a deep dive of the pilot - starting with the very memorable standoff between Raylan Givens and Tommy Bucks.  Justified premiered in 2010, which was a much different world in terms of social awareness around police brutality, so Jay and I discuss whether or not this opening standoff between Raylan and Tommy would fly in 2022.  Although Raylan was very confident in the justification of his actions towards Tommy, we discuss whether we agreed with him.

Justified has a very memorable, catchy theme song so of course we share our thoughts about it and where it ranks among our favorite tv show theme songs.  We also talk about the choice to pair this hip-hop meets bluegrass song with this show featuring modern day cowboy Raylan.

Next, we get share our thoughts on our introductions to Boyd and Ava.  Timothy Olyphant and Walton Goggins were without question the standout performances in the pilot, so we talk about which actor left us wanting to know more about their respective character by the end of the pilot.

We give our elevator pitch as to why you should continue on with Justified if you have not watched the entire series.  We also briefly discuss the Justified revival currently in production and whether we plan to watch.  Spoiler alert - of course we do! We both loved Justified.

Jay is officially introduced to the podcast thirst segment.  He shares his thirsty picks from the pilot and also accepts my challenge to guest cast an actor/actress that he has a crush on that he would like to see in the Justified universe.

There's a brief spoiler discussion in the main discussion.  Thanks to podcast editor Daniel, you'll get an alert when that discussion begins and I've flagged it in the chapter markers.  The brief spoiler detour begins around 1:02:44 and ends around 108:16 - just in case chapter markers aren't supported wherever you listen.  After the main discussion concludes, Jay and I discuss our thoughts on the series as a whole.  As always, you'll get a heads up before that discussion begins.

    The Bob's Burgers Movie

    The Bob's Burgers Movie

Happy Wine Wednesday! Candi returns this week to discuss The Bob's Burgers's Movie.  Bob's Burgers is our favorite comfort show, so we were delighted when it was announced that the Belchers were coming to the big screen.

You know I love discussing which characters we relate to from a show and there was no way I would pass on an opportunity to discuss which Belchers we see in ourselves.  We then touch on how the writers manage to acknowledge real life issues, such as the Belchers' financial struggles, while still creating a property that is both comforting and humorous.  Next, we get into whether there were any noticeable differences between the Belchers on film versus television.

It wouldn't be Bob's Burgers if there were no musical numbers, so of course we share our favorite selections from the film.  Following that, we share our thoughts on the various arcs for each Belcher family member.  The secondary characters have become just as memorable as the Belchers, so we talk about which characters outside of the Belcher family we like most. It would be a little weird to share thirsty thoughts about animated characters, so this week's thirst segment has a little twist to it.

As always, we love you for listening.  Find and follow Candi on Twitter here.

Queer As Folk (2022) Pilot: Righteously Railed

Queer As Folk (2022) Pilot: Righteously Railed

Happy Wine Wednesday!  Stacey AKA Sticky Keys makes her triumphant return to the podcast this week to discuss the pilot episode of the Paramount reboot of Queer As Folk.

Content Warning: Mass Shooting; Gun Violence

After sharing our respective histories with the Queer As Folk franchise, Stacey and I discuss the writers' choice to pull from the Pulse nightclub tragedy for the series opening.  Once we unpack our feelings about that, we then get into the rest of the pilot.  We talk about the very bold opening scene and New Orleans as the location for series.  We also discuss character introductions and  play a game in which Stacey tells me if my character arc predictions are hot or cold.  Following that, we get into standout performances, thirsty thoughts, and Stacey shares her thoughts on how this version of Queer As Folk stacks up against its predecessors.

    Fire Island

    Fire Island

Happy Wine Wednesday! I'm back this week with Abbey and a very new special guest - Marcus - to discuss the delightful rom com, Fire Island.

Our conversation kicks off with our thoughts on one of the things the writers did really well - intimacy.  We share our favorite romantically intimate scenes between Noah and Will, along with our favorite platonic intimate moment between Noah and Howie.

We discuss director Andrew Ahn's thoughts on the benefits of having an all queer cast when filming romantically intimate scenes like the beautifully shot rain scene.  Next, we get into one of my favorite themes - chosen family.  One of the delightful parts of Fire Island is its exploration of chosen family and intimate, but platonic bonds. Marcus and Abbey share their thoughts on how the writers  explored variances in the gay experience on Fire Island — a place considered by some as a haven for the LGBTQ+ community — as well as the variances in the kinds of relationships gay people value.

Because Abbey has now joined me to discuss two properties known for featuring full frontal male nudity, I had to ask their thoughts on whether Fire Island could have benefitted from the same.  We talk replay value of Fire Island and whether or not we would like a sequel to the film.  As always, we close with our thirsty thoughts.

    Thanks so much for listening!

Friendly reminder - we drink, we know things, and we use adult language.

And be sure to give our amazing guest Abbey a follow over on Twitter and on Instagram.  You can find Marcus on Twitter here.

    The Pilot Project: HBO's Looking

    The Pilot Project: HBO's Looking

Happy Wine Wednesday! I am so happy to welcome Terence B. Johnson back to the podcast this week for another installment of our special series, The Pilot Project.  We're heading to the Bay Area to discuss the pilot episode of the HBO's Looking.

We kick off the discussion with our respective Looking origin stories.  I examine why this amazing series was not on my radar when it debuted and concluded that it had everything to do with the unfortunate decision to pair the show with Girls.  Next, we talk about the decision by the writers to cut to the chase and just drop us right into the action with Paddy and his very awkward foray into cursing.  From there, we discuss our initial character impressions from the pilot.  This allows for a fun game in which I make predictions about the main characters based on the pilot episode and Terence lets me know if my predictions are right or way off base.

In a world of reboots, we share our thoughts on what our version of Looking what look like in 2022.  Returning to the Lena Dunham and Girls of it all, we discuss whether the constant comparison of Looking to Girls by reviewers was fair.  We also talking about the timing of Looking and how being set in 2014 informs the pilot's premise. I was surprised to find reviews of the pilot episode that described it as milquetoast - Terence and I talk about why this is wrong and why the understated approach works so well for this pilot.

As always, we discuss standouts from the pilot and end on a thirsty note.  It should come as no surprise that the both of these segments focus heavily on Richie.  Raúl Castillo is a revelation!

Thanks so much for listening! Friendly reminder - we drink, we know things, and we use adult language.

Cookies and Screams AKA The Empire Pilot

Cookies and Screams AKA The Empire Pilot

Happy Wine Wednesday! As you'll hear in the intro, this week's episode is one that I've been wanting to do for a very long time.  Special guest Candi returns this week to discuss the pilot episode of the messy, messy Fox drama/musical - Empire.  We've got the main discussion about the pilot episode and a really fun spoiler segment in which we discuss the top 10 ridiculous Empire moments.

Empire is my current comfort show and having watched the entire series multiple times, unpacking this mess with Candi was like therapy.  As for the pilot, we talk about the casting of Cookie and Lucious.  Could you see Monique as Cookie or Wesley Snipes as Lucious? We also talk about our impressions of the newcomers to whom we were introduced, including Bryshere Gray, Trai Byers, and Jussie Smollett.  If you're looking for commentary about Jussie outside of his role on Empire, you'll have to stick around for the spoiler segment.

You can't talk about Empire without touching on the show's amazing music, so we share our favorite songs from the pilot.  We discuss our favorite characters from this introductory episode and share what we liked and what we didn't like overall.  In our closing arguments, we share whether or not you should continue with Empire if you've only watched the pilot.  And, as always, we get thirsty! Who is so hot you might do a 17-year bid in prison for them?

During the spoiler segment, we talk ridiculous moments, thoughts on the series finale, what Empire got right, and Empire's greatest crime against television writing.  We get into the Jussie of it all and remind folks that he wasn't the only one with some off-screen messiness as the series wrapped.  Say what you want about Empire, Lee Daniels leveraged his success to attract some serious heavy hitters to the series and we discuss which big name actor appearances we  enjoyed.  I also stand in my truth about my hatred of musicals, the very limited list of musicals that I actually enjoy, and Candi very kindly reminds me that Empire is in fact a musical show.
