The Wild Wild West of Judicial Review

The Wild Wild West of Judicial Review

If you lost your impaired driving administrative appeal, you likely have a lot of questions. Yes, it's a loss, but there may be something you can do about it. This episode of Legal Eyes explores "judicial review" in the context of IRS (Immediate Roadside Sanction) appeals. Judicial Review is like an appeal of the first SafeRoads hearing. Shannon Gunn Emery, one of the lawyers with Gunn Law Group, talks about the various steps, costs, license suspensions, and arguments that arise when one embarks on a judicial review of a SafeRoads Adjudicator's decision. You may have lost your appeal of the NAP (Notice of Administrative Penalty) (we are all about acronyms and parentheses) but don't despair! This podcast will help you to make the right legal decisions for your case.

How To Run (and Hopefully Win) Your IRS

How To Run (and Hopefully Win) Your IRS

Stopped for impaired driving in Alberta? Normally those cases usually do not result in criminal charges being laid. Instead, the driver is often given an Immediate Roadside Sanction. There is a way of fighting the IRS, but trying to do that on your own can be a daunting task. You may have heard these are hard or almost impossible to win. Should you even try? Shannon Gunn Emery, a senior lawyer with Gunn Law Group, explains, step-by-step, how her firm initiates and prepares for the appeal. She shares the arguments and cases which have been succeeding in front of adjudicators so that you can do it on your own - or so you can better understand what your lawyer is doing for you.

    Legal Eyes-ing Sex Work

    Legal Eyes-ing Sex Work

Warning - this episode has a strong academic slant to it; if you are looking for something more on the entertainment side of things, this may not be the right episode for you. The goal of "Legal Eyes-ing sex work" is really to educate the public about a fast-evolving area of law in Canada. Many courts across the country are currently grappling with the issues covered in this podcast. Are you curious why? The laws regarding sex work are definitely complicated. Shannon Gunn Emery, an experienced criminal defence lawyer takes you through some of the sex work laws in Canada and then illustrates how, in real life, those laws impacted four sex workers and the people who were trying to work with them.

Why SafeRoads Does Not Make Me Feel Safe

If you do not like scary stories, please do not listen to this podcast. Wait for another, less terrifying one. There will be others, I swear. I pinky swear. If, however, you are bold and courageous, I invite you to travel with me for another half hour on an  Adventure in Law and Life.

    The Beginning

    The Beginning

Hi there! My name is Shannon Gunn Emery. I confess that I am a lawyer - through and through. How did that happen? Surely there was a way to avoid it? My mother is guiltless in all of this. It is not really her fault that I went in this direction. While she did often encourage me in subtle, but powerful, ways, in this episode, the finger is pointed squarely at my father, Peter Bruce Gunn. This should act as a warning to all those who are contemplating the practice of law - or maybe you will hear a different message. Thank you for joining me in this ongoing Adventure in Law and Life.
